How blessed we are to have Andy Partridge in this world.
Amen.
That is a terribly nice thing to say.
I'll second that AMEN! 😉
he's really there, is he? well, in me mind, he's even been to carolina, many times, ha ha
Yesssss!
I first saw XTC in 1978 at the corn exchange in Salisbury. I’d just bought the 3D EP , dyed my hair purple and joined a band in Andover. I remember we were outside the Salisbury gig queuing up and these 4 geezers joined the Q just behind us. It was the band. AP was wearing a big fluffy red jumper so they stood out in the 70s grey. We had our one and only chat with them. We went on to see them 6 or 7 times. I’ve been a fan ever since and I’ve carried on writing and playing to this day. Now we are officially ancient Britons, the world has been a better place with the music of XTC. 😊
the fact he can just pull so much together- a 10 year old melody, a book he's been reading, the motion of a chord progression- and put it all into a song, is amazing. to hear him recollect and pin point every stage of the creative process, too, is beyond impressive
I want Andy to explain every track he ever wrote like this ! I'll listen to it on sunday afternoon when I get depressed. He is a treasure.
Easily one of the greatest songs ever written. The composition, the lyrics, the arrangement. Everything about it is so genius and wonderful
The horn part in studio version of this makes me cry. I love the use of horns in some of xtc s tracks. And to me Andy P is the best craftsman of pop music in my life time. Been thrilled and satisfied by their music since I found it as a 9yr old in 1979.
Completely agree, especially about the horns although easily my favorite horn part in an XTC song is in River of Orchids. The way the trumpet (or Flugel horn) continues the note started by a voice in such a seamless, gorgeous, way never fails to take my breath away.
Naming one's favorite XTC song is likely impossible, but "Easter Theatre" would pop to mind for me before the question was entirely posited. Listening to Andy describe the genius genesis of this nourishing song made a fine breakfast. So happy to hear it.
Thank you for this. Happy Easter 2023 all you XTC fans, from an old one.
Just discovered it this Easter, what a masterpiece. Love the breadth of instrumentation and the terrific classical flourishes. Song is rich with goodness. All hail Sir Andy, brilliant joyful work
Possibly the most astonishing song written in 50 years.
An astonishing document. Andy is a wonderful talent and is to be respected as a wonderful writer and even more a great satirist. I am an XTC fanatic….mostly Black Sea through Apple Venus. Subscribed!! - Nelson Bragg - Brian Wilson Band
Perhaps the finest explanation of someone’s songwriting process ever shared with others. The man is simply beyond being a genius
One of Andy's greatest songs!
This song means a lot to me… and my mom and my family. Thank you ❤
One of the best breakdowns of the songwriting process I've ever heard... for one of the greatest bands/ songwriters ever.
What a JOY Andy Partidge is to listen to... xx SF
Andy Partridge’s whole discussion of this song is a brilliant example of synesthesia and the evocative power of music.
So gorgeous, makes me cry, especially at the end. Just beautiful! .
Same. Chills throughout...and then when Andy sings that elongated and pained "Smoke!" near the end, it literally brought a tear to my eye the first time I heard it. When your music elicits that kind of emotional reaction from even one person, let alone many, you know you've got the gift.
A gentle genius...
Apple Venus was released 1999.
Exactly 20 years later, in 2019, people finally start to understand better what a brilliant work that is. It is a near perfect masterpiece despite having 3 or so weaker songs on it. It goes far beyond pop music.
Frivolous Tonight, and Fruit Nut were my weakest. Partridge shines on that album, and Colin shines more on Wasp Star (Boarded Up, In Another Life, Standing In for Joe).

I'll give you both thumbs up, Mr. Internet Guy! I pity they did not make 1 "long" album from both, leaving the weaker tunes out. Both then would have fitted onto one. I don't mind a mix of semi-classic, pastoral and pop. It would have been a late, superb masterpiece.
Or, if two, then both the having same tunes, and one Colin's style and one Andy's style. That would have been interesting.
Can anyone please convince them both to get together for one more time? If there are no more compositions, then both of them can use some favourite older ones with new arrangements and production. And give them an award, please. They really deserve it. Britain's best!
Agreed
Such a treat to get an insight into the creative process of one of the best songwriters of our time. ❤
So brilliant ... I could listen to Andy talk about his songs for hours
Just the BEST band ever from my teenage years throughout my entire life- what a GIFT 🤗
this song never fails to give me those "this is so good" chills!
love this song so much

What’s fascinating is how Andy sees the chords and sounds visually. That must be an amazing advantage to a songwriter.

Definition of a genius
Fabulous! What a creative genius Partridge was (is?)
It must be amazing to see images from chords. Andy keeps chords I would toss away immediately.

Daycent
me hear 'rain-bow mind'
Colin's look of blankness ? I don't think so somehow, do you ?
Kenneth Little no..probably it was about whether or not he had lifted it from somewhere...
I have listened to this album since the week it released, and just this week I was listening to this song, and I’m like, “oh no waittaminute. I think this might be about Jesus getting vamoosed by some pagans?… “ slow me.
I have always appreciated how Andy sees things from a different lens than the norm. It cracks me up though that he misses the Christian theme of renewal that's portrayed in the crucifixion and resurrection. So close!
