Please share our love with Dave - a true guitar hero and a lovely person! He's the main reason I recently purchased my electric 12 string. These ProgCast episodes are like gospel to us XTC fans - thank you!
I love XTC so much. I had no idea as kid from Mississippi in the 80's, but in a band I joined: we needed to cover Mayor of Simpleton. I was blown away and listened to that cassette for months before going to Skylarking and then Rag & Bone Buffett. Life changing. This new version of Big Express is like having a new XTC record for me! It's the best thing I have heard since PG's i/o last fall. Oh, and I am a huge Tin Spirits fan. Thanks for that, too, D.G.!!!!
I agree about the comment saying every XTC album (or most at least) leaves you with something mind blowing at the end - so true. Good podcast - Dave G is such a genuine & humble guy and Gregg a respectful interviewer.
TBE is marvellous! having Dave on my own show this year as we did discussion the remix too, Pat Mastelotto also adores this one as well There's a great pic out there of andy and co with GWR "Lode Star" steam locomotive around 1984 for promo which fits the autobiographical nature of the record.
Dave Gregory is one of the greatest new wave, power pop guitarists of his generation. His phrasings and technical skill brought Andy and Colin’s songs to life.
I totally agree with Dave that This World Over is a song that should have been a hit. I loved that song! In fact, it was the only XTC song my band ever covered as I felt it was a song people should hear - both sonically and lyrically.
3rd comment! Hello Gents! I must say that I was over moon in my high-school brain when this record came oit with its super cool round wheel cover sleeve. It was like yes! Were going to Disney World, Xtc style! So full over cinematic imagery and emotion. To heck with the naysayers! I was all in, Alin with the pic of the band in the Train engine setting. Melodic masterpieces like Seagulls, and Wish I Had. Andy at his pop best. And I remember the Sun was mind-blowing, as it leads into Train. . Looking fwd to the new mix. Recently I had this idea of taking am Xtc album like this and rearranging the order of the songs, and then it turns into a narrative....and then the idea....This should be a staged Musical! Imagine Drums and Wires telling a tale about a young Swindon band circa 1979...😮😊❤
Dave's Banjo in Train Running Low... wasn't lost on me! /s essentia! XTC are masters of eclecticism. Every sound serves the concept of the lyrical idea. Hence styles change from song to song.
This is brilliant, really get hear how much Dave gave to the sound of Xtc with his keys playing, love his playing on Rook and remember the sun and the man who sailed around his soul.
Thanks for this interview Greg, Dave is always a great interview, the new mix for this album is fantastic, it’s opened up a lot on this very dense album. The story of the gaslighting of the band by the label and management is a common story in the music business sadly.
I recently binged all your Dave Gregory interviews (amongst others), so good! Loved to hear you guys talk about the Rolling Stone top 250 guitarists, they whiffed so badly with that... along with the guys Rick Beato already mentioned; no John Scofield, Larry Coryell, Steve Morse... Wes, McLaughlin and Metheny all way to low too.
I had an acquaintance who always used to say 'All Roads Lead To Todd' - it did for XTC and it did for Lyle Workman who is on the exceptional '2nd Wind' - and then it did for my Son (a Vai influenced shredder) via the Lyle Workman album 'Uncommon Measures' who then found his own way to...Todd via 2nd Wind proving that all roads really do lead to Todd...Regarding 'Big Express' I am hoping that someone asks Andy Partridge about his harmonica playing on Reign Of Blows (What the tab is and the Harp key)
There's an elephant-in-the-room question that keeps getting overlooked and somebody needs to ask them next time they are on, either Andy or David. I want to hear all about them trading solos at the end of "Books Are Burning".
I was happy to hear about Dave's love for Halsall's playing towards the end, but I think he should give Ayers a proper chance. Over the years he became an excellent songwriter and made tons of great records and the guitar lines and solos Ollie played live with him were unimaginable.
Dave, I have to ask this. I build guitar amps (Built one for Andy & delivered it to Swindon) and tons of audio equipment. I really don't get ATMOS. I design both digital and analog and I understand why Apple did this as they needed something that could take Bluetooth further. But for the average user with a stereo system. What does ATMOS give me?
Well, after Terry left it was never the same. I might even be the only person around here who prefers the Barry Andrews version of the band. There were some great songs and nice albums afterwards, always way above your average band, but my XTC goes pretty much up to English Settlement. I wouldn't t find it strange that people who follow something called ProgCast prefers the more contrived and overproduced version of the band, it was still great anyway. When it comes to remixing and remastering, I don't need any of that at all.
Great interview. Just a point on what Dave has stated about the SW mix, I thought there was a problem with my set up when I bought the Disc. This new mix isn’t as great as I thought it would be as any of the main elements of the keyboards were taken out, leaving the songs now very empty, it’s my least favorite SW mix from the XTC series.
Record compagnies killing the bands with debts, .. Danny Elfman told the same story about Oingo Boingo. ..Supertramp couldn't release their next albums, after Breakfast in America's success. Etc etc. Steve Vai asked Zappa what advise he would give to a young musician. Zappa answered ''Keep your publishing !" Vai didn't even know what it was. Zappa gave him his lawyer's number, Vai bought one hour of his time, heard about all the other side of the music industry, and the music market. ''From that day, he is still my lawyer'' he says. ''We're talking about 7 or 10millions dollars, maybe more.''
The discussion towards the end about the subversive character of XTC is apt. It also may be the reason the band didn’t really gain a huge following. Sad to say, people go to pop precisely NOT to have their preconceptions challenged. That’s a big generalisation, I know, but there’s a core of truth to it.
And all as seen by someone else, Steven Wilson…decades after the release..why now Wilson has joined another band I don’t get it I WONT accept it I bought the record then. Don’t buy the whole SW thing, sorry What a turn off
Totally agree, love love love This World Over
Hell yes.
Dave is looking so well preserved. Such a thoughtful genius.
Yeah.. he ain't married.. that'll be it I think.. 😁
Thoughtful genius, indeed.
Please share our love with Dave - a true guitar hero and a lovely person! He's the main reason I recently purchased my electric 12 string. These ProgCast episodes are like gospel to us XTC fans - thank you!
That is so cool of you to say! Love talking with the lads.
Dave gregory is the best!!
100%
I don't what it is, but I could listen endlessly to Dave Gregory talking about the XTC days.
Me too!
Thanks for the mention of Ollie :)
Of course! Ollie must always be remembered.

Thank you! We certainly try.

Cool.
Dave Gregory is one of the greatest new wave, power pop guitarists of his generation. His phrasings and technical skill brought Andy and Colin’s songs to life.
Truth.
“Seagulls” and “This Word Over” are two of the most stunningly beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard.
A GREAT album.
Dave is such a brillant musician and a nice person. And XTC was such a great band...
Thanks for this interview.
Very interesting.
Thanks for listening!

Thank you Gregg and thank you Dave. It was a real pleasure to eavesdrop your really enjoyable conversation.
Thanks for eavesdropping!
Looking forward to hearing this

The great one. XTC & BBT!!!
And the new mixes reveal what these fantastic songs, arrangements and performances really are.
Agreed.
Dave's Banjo in Train Running Low... wasn't lost on me! /s essentia! XTC are masters of eclecticism. Every sound serves the concept of the lyrical idea. Hence styles change from song to song.
Totally true.
Oh fantastic! Good on yer, Gregg. A brilliant album
Thanks, as always Paul!
This is brilliant, really get hear how much Dave gave to the sound of Xtc with his keys playing, love his playing on Rook and remember the sun and the man who sailed around his soul.
Dave's piano playing is no joke!
Great interview! TBE is a fine album, cheers.
Thank= you!
Yes! He's my favorite guest. So happy to see this posted. I can't wait to listen.
Thanks for tuning in!

Indeed.
Great one Mr Bendian!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks CD.

My roads led to Todd, big time.
Very cool guys.
There's an elephant-in-the-room question that keeps getting overlooked and somebody needs to ask them next time they are on, either Andy or David. I want to hear all about them trading solos at the end of "Books Are Burning".
Both Andy and Dave share the love of Ollie Halsall, that’s nice to see.
So true.
I was happy to hear about Dave's love for Halsall's playing towards the end, but I think he should give Ayers a proper chance. Over the years he became an excellent songwriter and made tons of great records and the guitar lines and solos Ollie played live with him were unimaginable.

You can see the hurt in Dave's eyes, when he recounts Virgin and their lousy management. He deserved much better.
I felt badly going there once I realized this was the case.
@@TheProgCast I left Virgin media because of it.

Sad to say, people go to pop precisely NOT to have their preconceptions challenged. That’s a big generalisation, I know, but there’s a core of truth to it.
I bring it up to them frequently. It is is indeed something to marvel at with these XTC gents.
And all as seen by someone else, Steven Wilson…decades after the release..why now Wilson has joined another band
I don’t get it
I WONT accept it
I bought the record then.
Don’t buy the whole SW thing, sorry
What a turn off
