I know a similar story of hijinks in the RAF... One day a Phantom intercepts a bear and the GCI hears: "Those ###### have got a copy of Leuchars station magazine". At the time the station magazine was a restricted document

This brought back some great memories.
When I was with my Tomcat squadron back in the early to mid 80s, every once in a while I'd sit in the squadron ready room as the duty messenger. Like a fly on the wall, I'd listen to the aircrews as they talked about bouncing those bears as we ran around the Atlantic or in the Med. The tales they would tell were hilarious.
This interview with Dozo brought back not only this memory, but compelled me to look up the episode of History Channel's Dogfights which featured him. Great stuff!

My pops flew the Phantosaurus in VMFA-212 '86-'87 and intercepted Bears out of Okinawa. As long as their tail gunner never moved the guns, then shenanigans like this every day

my old man often tells the story about one of his fun interactions with a bear in the F-4. he says after he showed the playboy, the guy in the tail directed them up towards the cockpit where the bear pilot cycled their probe in and out

Heard a story once (passed down a few times) of a Soviet Bear crew that thought they got an astonishing picture of the battle group, but when they got back to Murmansk, and got the film developed, it was a very close picture of some undercarriage doors because a Tomcat had gotten in close and filled up the frame! Don't how possible or safe that would've been, but it made for a great laugh over beers. You were and are the best of the best!

Great clip Jell-O. My pops was a Vietnam A-1 pilot and because of that…. When I turned 21 he took me to Hook every year that I could go. My first one in ‘97 there were still a pile of the old timers from WW2. They were like the Rat Pack literally holding court during happy hour in the ready rooms. I met the #1 Navy Ace named Alex Veraciu (sp?) that at a seriously advanced age was still very much a Navy fighter pilot. He has some fairly serious stories too…
    Keep up the good work!

There's a story in "Bye, Bye, Baby" where they tell the story of a flight of Tomcats intercepting the Bears 1100NM from the carrier - they'd set up a tanker train to accomplish it - the Bears had no clue where the carrier was. As I recall, they even set up a Hawkeye way out (and in the wrong direction) to really confuse them. The Haynes F-14 manual (great book) also recounts the fact that RIOs had pretty nice Minolta cameras in the back during the Cold War, and when flying off the coast of Vietnam, they got a picture of a Soviet pilot in a MiG-23 with red hair. That's what always bothered me about Top Gun - Goose would've had a way better camera than that cheap Polaroid, and he'd have known NOT to use the flash against the canopy.

@@FighterPilotPodcast yes, I just finished it. It was an amazing story. I wasn't old enough to serve during the Vietnam war, I joined in 82, and reported in 83'. However, my wife is Vietnamese and I work with a lot of Vietnamese. So I've heard some of their stories as well.

The funny part is while these guys thought the bear doesnt know about the location of the carrier, but the Soviet Subs knew :D Its always fun to hear the both sides of the stories.
