    These cemeteries should be maintained by the city or county...needs to be a law!

    • @MrJuvefrank
      @MrJuvefrank Год назад +17

      There is a law. If you own a cemetery, you cannot just walk away from it when it's full; laws require you to maintain it. 100 years from now, it's impossible for you to keep maintaining it. When you leave it to somebody in your will, they don't want it because all it does is suck money out of his/her budget without bringing any profit at all.

      In the UK churchyards are managed by the church that the yard is attached to and cemeteries are managed by local government. The idea of privatised cemeteries is abhorrent to our sensibilities. The thought of a mass final resting place ending up like this mind-blowing. The final interment was only two decades ago too. I accept that we have cultural differences but this is utterly stunning.

    My grandparents lived up the road from here; my brother and sister and I used to play there as kids. The mausoleum was cooler than the sweltering summer heat, so we would go in and sit down (there was a seating area, and drinking fountain) to cool-off. My little sister used to take some of the fake flowers from a full vase, and put some in the empty ones, "so they wouldn't be alone"). This is a travesty AND a tragedy.

  • @tomhalloran4877
    @tomhalloran4877 2 года назад +70

    Thanks for bringing this to the forefront. It is tragic that the city, county, and state entities do not put the bureaucracy aside and handle the 400 plus reinterments. As a funeral service provider and embalmer for over 42 years I can share that I have coordinated well over 100 disinterments and reburials over the decades. The $6K per body is ridiculous! it is a paperwork and labor issue that need not exceed $400 to $500 hundred per individual transit and burial. A cemetery donates to the community space to inter the estimated 400 individuals, in multi-depth graves it is approximately 130 spaces. it is only as hard as one makes it. I can only share that we are here but once, and what we do to correct or mend what needs to be mended is the legacy we leave. Not everything we do in life requires a profit to be made; sometimes it is simply the right thing to do.

      @@monav4062 I appreciate the sentiments shared. I believe that if the community took action, with the assistance of a number of funeral homes, and adjacent cemeteries in the area the task could be accomplished. The city, county and or state would need to step in as the financiers of the project to permit the professionals and the "community" to rectify the problem. I mean in 1969 we went to the moon........... it is not impossible to put egos, pride and greed aside for the few months it would take to move them, and show compassion to the founders of the community for which they lived, worked and were eventually put to rest. To the moon and back, this too can be done. Hell............. I will fly out there and get you all started with the solution, and, ........... I will pay for my own flight and hotel.

    Seeing the graffiti on the walls inside the mausoleum, the crypt's opened, caskets exposed and no longer sealed, that one that was on the floor, some caskets appearing to be missing from some crypts, etc.... is horrifying. Obviously, there have been people that go there for the "fun" of it and have opened those crypts and caskets to mess with and steal the bones and/or steal anything that was buried with the deceased. The state of this cemetery has deeply pissed me off. Especially the childrens graves and the return servicemens. In Australia our city councils are responsible for the maintenance of our cemeteries with very few being privately owned. If our cemeteries were kept in this condition, there would be hell to pay. The owners or people that have inherited it should have their ass kicked.

    • @dawndaniels5941
      @dawndaniels5941 2 года назад +12

      Yes America needs to overhaul its cemetery and mausoleum ownership laws and create a suitable responsible government department to oversee the maintenance of the burial or disposal of human bodies after death. Mausoleums should be done away with because bricks and mortar buildings don't last long enough and are too costly to maintain, especially in the hands of private owners. Cremation, or Eco burials, both with some sort of online memorial web page for visitors to access and share memories on. The way it is now there is no dignity, respect, or care being shown to the deceased, money is being taken from the deceased family and only neglect is being provided in return. Australian cemeteries seem to be better maintained. Local governments take care of the daily maintenance and up keep of the grounds.

Yet new and ever larger mausoleums continue to be built...What happens when the money that's meant to be set aside for the perpetual care of those is also embezzled or their owners pass on? I used to work as a Sexton in the late 70's. Back then we would dig the graves by hand. After a burial, all the dirt that had been taken out, would actually be placed all back in. We never had left over dirt from a burial. I can still remember standing on the lid of a Coffin and tamping down the dirt on either side as my co-worker shoveled it in. If it was tamped down too much you would be left with a "dip" and not enough would be left with a "mound". So there was actually some skill involved to get it just right. The most graves I ever dug in one day was 7.

      That's so interesting...let me ask you something, my grandaddy bought close to 20 plots for our family and when someone in our family passes, grass doesn't grow back until the next family member passes, we've seen 7 yrs in between, 3 yrs, different numbers of years....like the last two recent passings was my cousin in 2011 and his grass didn't grow back until last year when my moma passed, and now, her grass hasn't grown back...this has gone on since the mid 60s when grandaddy bought the plots and the first family member passes, this is inside a VERY old cemetery where many are buried so I don't know if this is happening to anyone else's family, but it's a very real situation for my family...so now my momas grass won't grow back until the next person passes...have you ever heard of such? just curious because you are definitely the person to ask...

      @@donnar9864 I’m guessing that the dirt they used to refill the grave came from deep in the grave. Dirt that comes from deep in the grave has very few nutrients needed by plants. If you want grass immediately I would scrape off the top 4” or so and pour down several bags of potting soil and then put grass on top of that.

    This is heart breaking. It goes to show that spending a lot of money on a funeral is not worth it in the end. The fact that people made off with the remains is disgusting! This is why I'm opting for cremation or aquamation when I pass. Even human composting is a better idea than this. I am in mortuary school and we talk a lot about how everyone should go green when it comes down to body disposal. It really make sense now because you don't know what is going to happen 100 or so years down the line. Its especially disgusting to know that the coffins of some of those descendants had been robbed after only 20 years of burial. I hate to think what they did with the remains but I'm sure a lot of them were sold on the dark web. Thank you Lamont for shedding light on this case.

    I appreciate you helping to bring this to light for those of us who had no idea this happens. I struggle to understand, in a country where we have so many requirements on us, that these operators do not have some sort of state guarantee corporation that takes over if it cannot be maintained. This is not a difficult problem to prevent. These should not be treated the same as an old barn, left to fall down if the farmer can’t afford to keep it up. We owe our dead better than this.

    I honestly think some of it is beautiful where nature is taking back over. It also shows the actual reality of time and it’s affects. Much as many would like to think they will be remembered and in a beautiful resting place forever it just isn’t the case. Time and Nature will always win in the end even if it takes a few thousand or million years and we are pretty narcissistic to think otherwise. Keep this in mind when you plan your own funerals.

    This situation is beyond belief. Nobody should be treated like this even though they are dead. My feeling is that a regulated fire should be set on such mausoleums and the bodies inside interred for ever. It would be a far more decent way to treat human remains than leaving them open to rot like this. Disgusting. My feeling is that while we will all be forgotten and possibly our remains neglected in time, I would far prefer to be under the ground or burned into ashes than for my human remains left out in such a place as this mausoleum for all the world to see. A case of human greed gone very wrong once again in my opinion. Also appealing to human arrogance to some extent. Nobody can be remembered for ever - nobody. Being kept intact in a mausoleum is arrogant I think. To believe that one's body/skeleton can remain for ever intact is somewhat arrogant and useless. Why would anyone wish for that?

The state the place has been allowed to get into just because people can’t agree on responsibility is shocking, makes me ashamed to be alive if this sort of thing is allowed to happen in this day and age.
