      Sad, but amazing (and thankfully) it hasn't happened since.

    Incredible story Mike! Being a ballplayer myself I was beaned once in high school and am very fortunate my injury was not worse. The time to react is so minimal. I amazed that there has only been one death through all the years. Thanks for sharing.

      It really does defy the odds, especially come-backers to a pitcher. Glad that you turned out ok though!

    Once again, you shine light onto sadly forgotten, but terribly important moments of the game. And, once again, this is well done. Thank you.

    Well done, sir. I visited Chapman's grave last year before Opening Day and had planned to do it again this year.

    Exceptionally well done video! Thank you for showing this history. Very sad story I’ve heard many times but this is probably the most detailed. Take care man.

      Thanks David. Not the prettiest side-story in the game, but an important one in it's history.

    Great video. Very tragic for sure. Because of this is how years later the helmet was created but even with that you still have some close calls. Look at what happened to Stanton a few years ago. Just like there's been talks about trying to do the same for the pitcher. Makes me think about the Aroldis Chapman incident as well. Another Chapman. You know I like collecting vintage gloves... so about 4 years ago someone listed two brand new store model gloves of Chapman and Babe Ruth on eBay. Gloves looked really nice tags and everything. Each sold for over 11k. Seller was from Norway. Just thought I'd share that with you video reminded me of that. Very well put together Thanks for sharing.

      I'd like to take a look at pics of those gloves! Infielders had such small ones, it's a wonder they didn't have more difficulty in handling the ball. Then again, balls were 'sewn' together in rudimentary fashion.

      @@thevintagecomposer when players first started using gloves at the turn of the century some players couldn't get used to wearing them so what some started doing is cut holes in the palm of the glove. They would cut out baseball sized holes in the palm so that they could get a better feel for the ball when fielding.

    Well put together piece! I knew it had happened to someone way back when, but didn't realize it was former Red Sox pitcher Mays who was involved. Intent would have been so hard to prove in court.

      Especially when it would have set a precedent. He seems like one of those pitchers who knew he was real good, and all business on the field.

    Mays was most likely on his way to a HOF career when this happened. More interesting enough was the case of Ben Christensen (a former Cubs prospect) who did a similar thing while he was in college, however luckily the player he hit didn't pass away. Thanks for sharing and great mini doc.

      Ben's situation was a strange one at best; perhaps he felt threatened hitters would figure out his delivery. Appreciate you tuning in!

      Hi Bret, welcome to the channel! I try to cover a little bit of everything, and this seemed apropos considering the anniversary.

    Yeah, Mays should have been kept out of the HOF. Never showing remorse is not HOF worthy.

    • @thevintagecomposer

      Absolutely true; it's a shame due to his above average career for the time. Thanks for checking it out!

    Excellent video. I would love to have a card of Chapman, but sadly they are not often on the market and are very expensive.

    Very interesting, and sad story...once you get hit by a pitch, you're never quite the same...and never stick around for an inside curve ball as well...

    • @thevintagecomposer
      @thevintagecomposer  4 года назад +1

      Curves still hurt even though there is a change in speed. Just ask those that went up against Koufax!

    I've always hated this story, for obvious reasons. I'm thankful there haven't been more deaths on pitches, batted balls back up the middle, etc.

      Reaction time is so quick - gotta keep your eye on the ball!

    I’ve heard the story before, but I don’t think I knew about the dirty baseball the pitchers use back then. I wonder if in today’s medicine Chapman would have lived

    • @thevintagecomposer
      @thevintagecomposer  4 года назад

      Gaylord Perry had nothing on the pitchers dirtying up balls back then. Not sure about the medicine (which is a great point) because of the severity of bleeding, but they might have had him out in an ambulance much faster.
