Hi Manny! I showed your videos to my mom during Christmas. Her very FIRST reaction was: "qué guapito, no?" 🥰 In English: "oh he's handsome, huh?" Yes you are! And I love your soft smooth energy, how polite and delicate you are. Watching your hands in other videos makes me wonder if you're a doctor, or a pianist... You know, you're VERY different from other doll collectors. So I totally agree with your decision into vintage! That's the vibes I feel from you... Thanks for the video, I'm enjoying a lot!

January is always a reset I feel so it's a great time to go inward and reflect on what to achieve with your collection. Loved the outfit you sewed, if you hadn't mentioned it I would have believed it was a official fashion pack from the AG store. 😱 And it does make sense after having seen how much you've enjoyed the Jody doll who is a different scale but in a similar vein. 😊

I sewed just the sweater haha but yes, once I go fabric shopping I would love to sew entire outfits. The sweater took a lot of time getting the pattern and fit right. Knits are challenging!
But yes, I never though I would get into AG 🙈 but here I am!

I have honed my collection down over the years (I've collected since the early 90s) & sold all my boxed dolls. I've kept my loose Barbies from the 60s, the 70s, & I have 2 dolls from the 80s--about 22 dolls in all. My obsession is collecting & displaying the clothing, & this year, I've been really obsessed with clone doll clothing. That includes Maddie Mod outfits, British Crown Colony dresses, & Shillman styles. I had not paid attention to anything but Mattel clothing for all these years, but I noticed some really cute clone clothing after buying a white lace bellbottom 2-pc suit for my Francie doll which was very detailed, made well, & just amazing on my doll. I'm a sucker for nice clone outfits now! Dressing my dolls is my favorite Barbie pasttime, & what I focus on now, which is how I became entranced with your channel!

Thank you! Yes there's something so fun and satisfying about getting your dolls dressed in well made outfits. I also love clone clothes. Maybe after I've collected enough vintage barbie clothes, I will move onto clone clothes.

Hi, Manny. You know I love Vintage Barbie, but I also love the American Girl dolls, particularly the Historical Collection. I am so impressed by your design and sewing skills - that outfit is amazing! I love the constellation design on the sweater top (how appropriate). I would have never known it didn’t come with the doll, if you had not told me. Excellent!👏👏👏. Looking forward to seeing more dolls and hopefully more designs!

I think it's really smart to focus your collection so early on in your collecting. It will help you save space, money, and time. Awesome that you know what you like. I love you videos. I agree with you about the American Girl and Francie repros you are selling. I had both of these dolls and I thought they were off a bit. I sold mine too and I wish I had kept the outfits. Your Molly outfit is fabulous.

As a collector, you're way more focused than i was in my first year.
It took me about three years to finally get an idea of what i want my collection to be. For the first time, i am feeling as if my hobby has some direction.
i love the sweater set that you made for Molly!
Thumbing through the Spiegel's Christmas catalog was one of my favorite things to do in the early 90s.
It was in that catalog where i discovered American Girl dolls.
i have never wanted one for myself, but i remember reading the back stories for each doll and being fascinated by the little illustrated booklets that they came with.
Molly was the only one that i ever liked.
i still don't have any interest in AG dolls, but i do get that old "Christmas-y" feeling when i think of them in the holiday season of 1991/92.

Manny, I would not be an American Girl collector, but the concept for her and the accessories are out of this world. I live in Los Angeles and at The Grove, a shopping mall, there is a 3 story store exclusively for he! Complete with beauty parlor! These dolls are very expensive yet as I walk through the outdoor shopping I always see little girls with their mother carrying the just bought dolls out of the box.
I do like your Silkstone cocktail dress Barbie - have wanted that one. Curious as to why she didn't call to you?
You are so right about selling off some of the Barbie repro dolls. The ponytail dolls that come with the original Barbie box have too much hair! The American Girl doll wearing Poodle Parade is not a match with the questionable hair but the outfit is absolutely undetectable from the original! How did Mattel duplicate the fabric much less the diamond pattern?
The Poppy Parker dolls have beautiful fashion concepts but the dolls themselves are too hip and robotic, cold blooded to my taste.
With your intelligence, logic and sense of art history - experience, you are going to be a great doll collector!

    • @somelikeitvntg
      @somelikeitvntg  Год назад

Yes, I was so intrigued by how intricate and detailed the american girl dolls are.
I like the Silkstone cocktail Barbie and I have not had any luck selling her yet, so I'm deciding to hold on to her for now. The reason I wanted to let her go was because I wanted to focus my collection on vintage Barbie, and the BFMC dolls felt like a distraction. I do love the BFMC dolls, and once I feel satisfied with my vintage Barbie collection, I will most likely start looking into BFMC dolls.
I have succesfully sold all my Integrity Toys dolls! They are great quality, but I agree, a little too hip.
Thank you so much for the kind words :) !

MANNY, I wanted to throw in that the B&W swimsuit Barbie repro that you are selling with the original Barbie box ( THE selling point and worth the price of admission!), that, I think, is about at the beginning of the repro concept.. When I wrote, "Too much hair", what i should have said was wrongly rooted hair. The collector discovery of the ponytail having a full head of rooted hair over only the side rooting must have caused an uproar. It took quite a while for Mattel to do a better job with the hair. The early American Girl hair repos are lacking but the real crime had been the ponytails. I appreciate your system of not being afraid to loose the diolls in collecting the clothing.
This is another topic I would like to vent on: When the Silkstone dolls inexpensively were first introduced they came with the eye catching varied wardrobe. I don't know how many of these you have seen but later on, while the styles were nice, if one purchased them one might be disappointed. I remember one doll that came in a kicky brown suit with a pleated skirt. The suit had a long sleved blue blouse with cuffs at the end but when taken apart you saw what was actually there was a sleeveless blouse that had little matching wrist-ettes (?) to attach to the bottom of the jacket sleeve. It seemed a fraud and ruined the design for me. At this point Silkstone had a sleek outward presentation with the outfits made up of more little bits & pieces to put together than would be imagined. I am sure, however, that the Cocktail Dress on your Silkstone has GOT to be all in one piece! A plus!

Have you ever looked into thrifting for the vintage dolls?
I have a ton of them and all were purchased for a couple of euros my absolute max for a Mattel doll is always 5 euros regardless of age, I can see why you don't vibe with the repros, the quality and faces are simply not there.
It takes longer to build a collection that way but it's way more rewarding and gives you time to bond with the dolls...
Also it would help with saving for those indie dolls, Nav is a friend of mine and I can tell you you will adore his dolls!!!
I'm excited to see what you do with Anouk once you finally get one!
I have been collecting for like 20 years and the collecting bug evolves over time in the beginning I didn't care for female fashion dolls at all, and Barbie has never been one of my interests, but they keep on landing on my hands for next to no money and as a good Mexican I have a hard time saying no to a bargain, so I ended up with a big Barbie collection despite me not really liking her, my first female fashion doll was Licca chan but not those hideous ones by Takara Tomy, the real Takara ones from the Showa era made in Japan (The current ones are Chinese and terrible quality), another amazing vintage doll that might motivate you to sew for her is Tammy by Ideal her scale is similar to Barbie's but her body has a more humane and natural look to it, less stylised body-wise...

    • @somelikeitvntg
      @somelikeitvntg  Год назад

Yes! I like that you mention the playing the long game in collecting. It can be hard to take a slow and look for deals, but it is more rewarding in the end.
What fashion dolls did you collect before Barbie and Licca?
Tammy is one I’m interested in! I follow a Japanese creator who makes beautiful clothing for her on insta.

@@somelikeitvntgI didn't really collected them as fashion dolls but I did buy Kens (but also Actionman and others) to redress them in tiny TOF leather outfits I made for them early in my 20's I think I never really got the fashion doll bug as most guys do, because back then I worked as a makeup artist for Runways and magazine photoshoots and I constantly styled my friends and models for events, so I didn't have the need for dolls that way...
I started collecting "fashion dolls" per se when I started with Licca dolls at the insistence of my best friend Shevie as something fun to do together as we both found them so beautiful.
I have seen many Japanese collectors on Insta and yes I love how they dress Tammy in lace and bows she looks so beautiful like a lolita but less sugary!

Now I’m in a completely different career, unrelated to fashion and clothing, and find joy in fashion dolls.
