Something I’ve learned is that when I find something for really cheap I will always ask me if I really want these, or I want to buy it because it’s cheap? Because I’ve been impulse buying cheap stuff but when a real deal comes, I don’t have the money because I’ve slready spend it… Now I think it twice 😊
I do that too and have to stop myself because I regret not getting dolls I really want more. I just did that recently and could kick myself. Lesson learned for me 🙂
Monster High being in a collecting high right now makes a lot of sense! I had randomly decided to sell some of my old ones, having no idea how popular they were! I listed them for fair prices and they sold SO fast! I had mostly complete sets. I probably could have raised the prices but I don’t mind. I got them many years ago in a lot second hand for cheap, so I was able to offer really fair prices
That's a sentiment I tell my husband all the time when he asks, " why are you selling things so cheap". My answer is always, "because I want someone else to enjoy them like I did, and not have to go broke to make them happy".
BRATZ TIP:
Core Girls usually get stocked more, so buy the fifth girl first. (Dana, Roxxi)
Boyz usually won’t sell out, so you can wait.

Been a collector for almost 15 years and to this day budgeting for my collection is still the hardest thing I do. Stay strong my doll friends
Probably one of my most satisfying and 'lucky' moments as a doll collector was being able to find the Storm Twins in store only two weeks after they first released, even if I know that they are not particularly rare or hard to find dolls. I also didn't have a job at the time of saving up for them, so I literally had to save up chore money over two monthes just to get the money to buy them. Seeing them and holding their box for the first time made me want to cry with joy because Veronica and Naomi are comfort characters for me and remain two of my favorite and two of the most aestheticly pleasing dolls in my whole collection. I also took advantage of the insane sales on RH/SH dolls during the holidays and made my parents aware of them, so I even have a second set of the Storm Twins to keep mint in box. I do acknowledge that I worked harder to save up for them than most other dolls in my collection the first time I brought them though, and it was worth it for me because of how much I love the characters and their aesthetic. I jokingly refer to that day as 'lucky' though because I also pulled a limted 5 star character on Genshin Impact, Yelan, on very low pity as well that day, and now every time I use that character, I am reminded of Veronica and Naomi.
Tangent over though, I am very picky with my collection, and I always choose at least 2 or 3 favorites in a doll line that I am collecting to focus on, then I get the others later. And this is all based on personal preference, so I simply prioritize getting the dolls that make me feel the happiest.

I had a similar experience as you with a listing for an american girl doll a few years ago. she was vintage mint condition and came with outfits I had been wanting forever, but then right as I was gonna buy her she sold... it was my mom who bought her lol and that was the best christmas ever, nothing will ever top it :,)

I'm a college student so I try to ration my money the best I can and look for deals online and then go look in person. I typically go to target so I can price match there and get a further 5% off by using my target red card. I try to limit myself to a doll a month for either my barbie collection or my RH collection unless there is an insane sale and I manage to get two of them for super cheap. December was the one exception to that! I try to only spend around $15 and I've only got two dolls in my entire collection that I have paid full price for.
Yep! Really it just is a slow progress and goal setting even with wanting a small collection iv used giftcards/sales the most in getting the 10ish dolls Iv wanted as well as learning to love the collection you do have.

Something I learnt from Blythe collectors early into collecting is to go for a doll that 'speaks to you' before you decide to purchase. Since Blythe are quite expensive, these collectors will try to get dolls where they feel a strong connection or attraction to. If you really love how the doll looks, then it will be worth it for you. If you don't feel as attached, then it's ok to pass on it.
I took this philosophy when I started getting playline dolls. I will only get dolls if I absolutely love everything about them (clothes, hair, design). For MyScene, I found most of my dolls at the thrift store and I'm just happy if I get at least 1 of each character. Masquerade Madness and mostly complete Nolee dolls are the only exceptions where I'll go searching online to purchase them, but I'm patiently waiting for a decent deal or the bubble to burst (still waiting for that Vintage Polly Pocket bubble to burst as well..).
A piece of advice for collecting is the rule of “3s”. I was always taught that once you have 3 or more of something, then it’s a collection. It helps when you can’t have a “complete set” of a doll line due to restricted budget. For example, Rainbow High has at least 6 dolls per series, but you might not have space or budget for all the dolls in the series. So choose 3 or your favs, and then you have a collection.
Being an adult doll collector is hard. Especially since I don’t have a spouse/partner to help with the bills/rent 😭😭 or a roommate

Also omg I go through “phases” too. Like for the last month or so I’ve been in a very Barbie mood and I can feel myself sliding into different one soon.
It’s actually funny seeing how… different prices are for 00s dolls and dolls from before. Like I’ve seen *actual* hard to find vintage Barbie’s from pre-80s go for under $200 and it’s wild to think people are paying over that for a doll that came out two decades ago. Once the collecting bubble pops they’ll all drop to more reasonable prices and that day can not come soon enough 🙏🏼
some really good points. I'm a bratz collector (exclusively) and I'm not looking at listings right now since prices have hiked ever since covid. the only doll I've bought since then was from another collector from facebook (a holy grail, treasures jade in perfect condition for 40 dollars). some people would call that luck but i knew where to look, how much she usually sold for, and how much i was willing to spend. the only other exception i would make for buying bratz dolls right now are the reproductions, def looking forward to campfire felicia and the pretty n punk line.
I am a huge fan of yours. My collection is very large and I paid a ton for them (over 18 years). I don't feel the need to explain or to articulate why I spend on dolls. I just collect - occasionally because I love a doll - sometimes for the sake of collecting. Sometimes I dont even open them, but love having them in my storage. I paid about 3K for a Volks doll and now he is worth about 200 and I love him just as much. People always ask about spending on dolls and I just say a lot.
I collect Strawberry Shortcake now. I luv them . I love when they are a mess and I get to clean them up. Sounds weird I know. Lol.

One thing I have learned through my years is that an Item is only worth what someone is willing to pay.
I'm the same way about setting price limits on specific dolls, like I don't pay more than retail on dolls that are currently in circulation and wait for sales for things that I like but don't have to have immediately. I don't pay more than $50 for playline brands or more than $200 for collector brands. Once every few years I might splurge on a $300-$400 bjd but I can count those dolls on one hand and I wouldn't have gotten them if I thought it'd break the bank.

last summer i was super lucky to find bratz sweetheart dana, og rock angelz sasha, xpress it sasha and slumber party meygan all in perfect condition with almost all of their stuff for so cheap. i had to travel to denmark to pick them up but it is not far away from germany where i live and it was so fun i definitely want to do something like this again this year!! ♡ i am so hyperfixated on bratz i could stare at my shelf all day long.😭

Gotta admit one of my favorite dolls in my collection is a ballerina barbie from the 90s in a teacher dress. I got her for $1 and she has pretty matted hair complete with a literal rattail. But something about her i just love 😭

People often call my mom “lucky” because she finds great clothes at the thrift store - in reality, she just goes very regularly! Most of the time, she finds nothing good. It’s just that other people only see the results of her diligence when they pay off, same as you!
I used to very regularly check thrift stores for dolls, but I found myself really not enjoying it, and I realized, with the specific dolls I collect (American girl), the thrift stores in my area often sell them separately online. so I reevaluated, and accepted that it wasn’t a fun way (for me) to get the dolls I want - even if I were to find an excellent deal one or two times, the time commitment (of an activity I found grueling, as I hate driving to the thrifts near me over and over) would simply not be worth it to me. Instead I invest time in finding estate sales and Facebook marketplace deals. It was hard to accept that I could potentially be missing out on deals, but FOMO is a fun-killer! This hobby is meant to be fun! As a result, now I get to enjoy going for a chill thrift every once in a while, without putting pressure on myself.
So that is some advice I will add to your own (which is very good!)- if you have a very focused collection, you can figure out over time where it makes sense to spend your time, and where you’re just making yourself miserable because of FOMO.
That doesn’t mean you absolutely should not find dolls through “inefficient” means - like all things in this hobby, do what makes YOU happy - if you aren’t finding dolls in thrift stores, but you like checking, than go for it! This is just advice based on my own experience, of breaking away from being ruled by FOMO.
This is especially important for newer collectors (like me), who may be more likely to get caught up in FOMO culture in the doll community, as we don’t have as many experiences to refer back to.

I think a huge part of it is determining how committed you are to doll collecting, me personally I consider myself a casual collector, as in I'm not a completionist I only buy dolls I really like so my collection is very small, I currently own:
8 sh/rh dolls (4 sh& 4 rh)
3 lol surprise tweens
2 soon to be lol surprise omgs
1 in box bratz doll

That’s not casual! It’s just that you want to have a smaller collection :) that can be a 100% committed collector, it’s just a different style! I should have brought that part up too!

I wish my collection would be smaller. I am in the process of downsizing. I am now only buying dolls I really really want. I think about it before adding a doll to my collection. I will be very selective thrifting this year especially during the boot sale season.

You are so sweet and thoughtful of others to make this video. And for being such a young person, you are quite wise. I really appreciate this video. It gives me food for thought on the way I handle buying dolls. My problem is saving money and not just buying one doll when I really want another one more. Like I will be planning on getting a specific doll, but then end up seeing something cheaper and purchasing it, even though I want the other doll more. Then I’m sad I didn’t wait and get the doll I really wanted. Also I sometimes buy dolls when I’ve had a bad experience to comfort myself like some people eat food. But when I do that, it’s not always a doll I’m happy with. Then I wonder why I bought it. So that’s something I have to work on not doing; or at least thinking a lot more about the doll before I purchase it. Thank you so much for the video sweetie 💗

Adult collector draculaura is my holy grail. She’s the only doll I watch out for and she recently sold for 142 on Mercari when she is most commonly listed as 300 to 500. Since she was 40 at retail I refuse to pay anymore then 200. I’m just waiting on her because I know monster high is crazy popular rn so the prices are jacked to all hell and she will eventually go down when the draculaura trend dies off, I mean I look at haunt couture Draculaura being listed for 700 dollars when she was 75 and laugh.

Love that you talk about this! plus the other unique/important topics that this hobby/collecting can bring about that barely is address and yep a lot of it at the end of the day making small goals/progress over time im a casual collector I only like but so much so i never have the missing out factor causing me too overspend mostly im just annoyed at only now having decent money to have gotten some of dolls I like as now I missed out on sailor moon dolls,brandy barbies,LE tiana dolls,and og sasha so I really only have a wish list of 18 dolls total that i have not gotten and there out of print... and only want about one doll this year and got 3 last year

I wanna say thank you for making this video. Im a somewhat new collector when it comes to dolls as well as not being very financially secure AS WELL as being in the middle of the big doll boom thats happened recently where fomo is everywhere. Ive recently decided to stick to only a hand full of doll lines (monster high g1-3, rainbow/shadow high as well as certain special vintage barbies) and its kinda helped me with thinking about which I want the most for right now and saving the one i dont feel as strongly towards for last. Will try and come back here whenever i have the urge to impulse buy. Thank you.

I think patience is the most important thing but it's hard because of FOMO and also because of the YOLO attitude. YOLO in doll collecting, or in buying stuff in general, is that feeling that you want to enjoy that thing right now in your life and no later because who knows what will happen. Pretty hard to deal with too

Never fully understood how crazy doll collecting can be. I suppose I’m just casual but I never really want expensive toys, I usually already have it and it goes way up or I’m just like oh well may find thrifting one day. Lol I am a toy collector and have been since I was a child. I’ve gotten HUGE into rainbow high. My goal is to own every doll. I want them all in and out of the box but I know I can’t afford that. I usually only buy rainbow high on clearance too so it is affordable with one job but I’m doing a side hustle so may help go towards more rainbow high or the bills. Lol I just had knee surgery and have 0 income now so maybe a while till I can buy toys unless I find one cheap at goodwill. Also can I just say I love ur Hamtaro house. The red roof is the Japanese release. I use to have the full collection and I gave it all away so I’ve slowly been collecting it all back. I got the American house and a little house for $30. I was so happy!

My baseline for buying dolls online is $5 if it's less than that I consider it a good deal. I mostly collect barbie at the moment but I do have a small collection of monster high dolls and various other dolls. I will not spend more than like $50 on a mass-produced modern doll for the most part (I consider anything newer than 1980 modern)

Hi Brooke I've been collocting dolls for a very long time manly American Girl the longest and then I had other dolls that I played with and I kinda collected too i Always took good care of my dolls sence i was little girl then i have afew glass dolls to from my aunt's and grandma. I've always gotten American Girl dolls for Christmas and my birthday then within the last few Years I've been able to buy an older retired American Girl doll off eBay using money that I have earned from Cashback apps that I use for scanning receipts. Then theirs been afew times I've found dolls besides American Girl doll at thift stores.
I'm a lot more picky about what I buy now due to space and doll prices are expensive (even at flea markets and thrift stores where I am). I have a budget and tend to not stray away from it.
Im also going to add growing up working class shaped my viewpoint on this as well when I say decent money I mean having $100 on me because anybody who grow up working class with a big family knows you dont get stuff like I never got dolls/board games/Christmas/b-day etc... so there was no time i could ask for a dolls etc.. for my b-day in normal cases I would of asked for og sasha for xyz or something so when I say annoyed that back than I mean a $20 doll could of been mine but now that im looking shes $300 smh

Your doll collecting journey is inspirational fr 😩✋. I'm new to doll collecting and it's hard to save up for the dolls I want because I end up buying other things instead so I ended up opening other bank account to transfer money there for dolls 🤞.
It took me a literal decade to get LE purple Rapunzel and last year in May, I could finally find one for sale which didn't cost a fortune. She goes for way more over here than in the US so it always seemed like an unreachable wish. I was beyond happy when I received her and I treasure her ever since 💜

Looking back at how I would buy dolls and ponies I really needed to take time and rethink how I was spending my money. I would drop so much on playline dolls that just came out cuz “ooh! New dolls on the Walmart shelves!” And then wait months for the next line and watch as the dolls I spent so much money on end up on clearance. Also had to get my fomo under control. This is a more recent one. I wasn’t able to buy anything new for months because of holidays and personal reasons and would have so much anxiety that I’ll miss a line because it can’t be bought in a physical store anymore, when I could still buy it online and for less money.
I also like how we kinda have the same thought process when it comes to priority! One month I will be buying all RH, tweens the next, mh, etc. And since I’m also a completionist with some lines there are some dolls I dread getting *cough*boy dolls*cough* and so i almost always try to buy them first to “get it over with” cuz I know I’ll keep putting it off.
A goal of mine this year is to have an emergency doll fund. Or just really start budgeting for dolls, cuz it has gotten me in hot water before

very helpful video! I’m a new doll collector & Bratz and Monster High are my main sought out dolls. having an extremely hard time finding G1 MH & early 2000’s Bratz. hoping that changes soon! I have so many grails lol ❤
The biggest reason I buy dolls is because I think they’re pretty, I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t really care about the character doll represents as long as their fashion and screening is beautiful or adorable- one of a kind dolls are not gonna do anything for me unless something about them is aesthetically pleasing to me…
If I don’t like what they’re wearing or what their face looks like or the color of the hair I’d probably will not buy them and or that determines how much money I’m willing to spend because sometimes it comes with the other dollar you want and it’s a good price😂

You have a nice collection from what I can see, but my collection has always been bast one what will be will be the most I have ever spent on a doll is $18.00. I have them ranging from the 1800's to now! I have been very lucky so far! I have been collecting since I was 2, I'm 63 now and the has been time when I had to turn down dolls that have been offered to me or the time, I was in the ARMY I just had no place to put them!

I had very little access or options growing up could never really get dolls etc.. so the fear of missing out Iv never really had in this hobby since I started as an adult being most dolls I really want already came out years ago so I missed the time to get them while they were in stores I have less than 20 on my current wish list of all time.The few dolls I do want now i get them on sale w/giftcard or both I really want LE tiana but chile $150... plus I also missed the first one in the set... I plan on wanting the ariel mermaid doll for the movie but, like you said those type of things tend to sell out fast.
I have spent $300 on the 80s Ariel designer doll. $200 on an in box She-ra Mermista doll. I have many in box 90s Barbies, but they were all less than $100. Totally Hair Barbie in box cost me $250.

I really want one of those Hybrid Active/Azone/Pure Neemo whatever you wanna call em Madoka Magica dolls, especially the Sakura Kyoko one. You can prob tell my profile. And like saving up to her is expensive, but I can do it thanks to my good grades and grandparents, but like, $300-400 + tax + shipping + customs is way too much. I could never, like never ever convince my parents, even if I had that money, to buy her. So like, your lucky to be an adult on that matter😅 I love ur Madoka Magica collection btw.
agree with a lot of these, specially the not going over a certain budget for each doll line. for me my max for bratz and mh and ever after high is 20 to maybee 25cad so if i see a doll i want but shes more than that i dont get em. for rh since they on the stores still i either wait for discounts and sales (which sucks bc my walmart never has any dolls nor sales) and our amazon ca discounts arent great eithe rlike they are in usa.. i also try to wait for giftcards if ive any. i also prefer to get em second hand from fb marketplace or depop/poshmark/kjiji or even ebay bc i can usually find em for half their retail price. here rh are 50-60cad and i get em each (complete) for 20 to 30 cad (usually they 20 to 25cad but with shippin its like each doll was 30cad ) so if a rh doll is more i pass bc i know i can find for cheaper. i also like/ prefer to combine shippin on things (shippin here in canada within canada is 20-25cad so buyin 1 or 2 dolls is honestly not worth it. if shippin is less than 20 like on vinted and poshmark then ill get 2 dolls from same seller if i want em. i dont go to my value village often bc its not often that it has dolls that i like/collect if i do go its between 1 to 2 times a month. all the other value villages are further away and i dont drive/have a car so i never go to those ones specially the ones in the city bc i never go to city/metro tickets are expensive lol. theres a second value village that is near my area but at same time kinda far but i rarely go bc rarely have any dolls i want tbh. i also have saved searches of bratz, mh , barbie and rh on depop, poshmark, kjiji and fb marketplace so i get notifcations/emails when theres new listings for those searches. same thing with havin honey/swagbucks extention it emails u when somethin u saved on your amazon is back in stock or has lowered price. there has been only a few times wher eive spent over my 20-25cad budget on a doll. it was on some bratz (last 2 i got last year that i remmeber bein over that budget was magic hair jade and flashback fever jade i payed 80 for both so each was 40 or less ) i also try to just buy within canada bc buyin from usa or anywhere is expensive bc of shippin/ currency. only place that currency is cheaper is australia (which ive bought bratz from) ive also bought before from europe for bratz but it was very good price even with currency and shippin too was cheap. also i wishhhh we could use mercari.. bc here in canada ofc we dont have has many websites and sales stores like in usa liek mercari has such good deals, and u guys have sooo many thrift type of stores and discounted stores and stores like walmart and macys and target etc here we just hve walmart (which if its like mine it suckkksss biggg when it comes to havin stuff specially dolls i collect like rh and bratz (mh g3 i dont really collect all of em but they barely have any g3 girls), we have gamestop and toysrus which their prices are 10cad more higher than retail, so if a doll is supposely retail 24usd here with currency it should be around 38cad but at gamestop and toysrus is like 44cad) another thing too is that i feel like a lot of dolls that we get here like reel drama or bratz or g3 or even rh they tend to just appear at toyrsus making us pay more than what we would if we got em at walmart or amazon but walmart doesnt have em. and if i have employee discount and once a month i get 20% employee discount at walmart i wanna buy dolls i cant bc my walmrt doesnt have any.. and if i wait to buy em there i end up missing out bc they dont come there and then they sell out on amazon etc and by the time i try gettin em at amazon or wtv their price is 3rd party seller. like also wtf are rh sh s2 ones priced at 47 48 cad on amazon ca and bein sold by amazon ca.. how tf can that be their price when in usa they 24.99usd.. they suppose to be around 35 to 38cad here (i was able to get zoey for that price the other day form there but all the other ones are still prices 48cad) or like costume ball rh only at amazon ca and price at 90cad or more bc third party sellers (but in usa in walmart they on sale for 25usd.. if they gonna have over in dolls to have em on sale why not just idk have em here in canada where we didnt even get any in stores. im just soo tired of us her ein canada or europe even not gettin any dolls or takin months and months to have any and or for high prices :C true about the whole if u spend 20bucks on this or this doll its less 20bucks u can spend on another dolls u might also find for good price, and then u will miss out on deals etc and or u wont miss out but u will find good deals but u wont be able to get em bc u already spent your money gettin other dolls that had good deals too. like u never know that another deal is around the corner. like this month i found/got so many good dolsl for good deals and spent my money on em so ive none left for other deals ive found too and want. ohh yeh also sellers not shippin ughhhh it breaks my heart i get soo frustated and disapointed. int he same day i had 2 sellers tlel me no shippin bc bad experience etc and it was for good dolls and price
