  • So I recently had Laparoscopic surgery to repair two inguinal hernias. It meant that I was unable to play gigs for 6 weeks whilst I recovered. I have also been unable to make videos as a result so I thought I'd make a video now I have recovered and talk about my experience with having the surgery to repair the inguinal hernias.
I hope this video helps anyone who is potentially about to have either keyhole laparoscopic surgery or open surgery to repair inguinal hernias. Overall my experience wasn't that bad, the surgery was quick, it went well and 1 month post operation I'm pretty much back to normal.
If anyone has any questions about the surgery or recovery then please don't hesitate to comment below and i'll get back to you.

I had laporoscopic 2 weeks ago on the left side, it was ok, no real pain etc and I was up and about the first day, they never even gave me any pain relief, they just said take Ibuprofen and paracetamol. The second and third days were a little sore for me getting in and out of bed but overall I was surprised how little pain I had as I was geared up for it to be way worse. I also put the discomfort down to the gas they use to inflate the abdomen but it was done for me by day 3.
It only took 9 months for me from start to finish on NHS, they did not give me open surgery as an option! I now need to spend the next 4 to 12 weeks taking time easy before getting back to sport. They did not even dress my wounds after mine, they just glued the cuts and left them!!
I found this video just by looking around for peoples inguinal hernia repair so thanks!!

    Hi Rob,
I had my surgery on the 12th of october and your story is a one on one copy as mine!
This week the surgery was 5 weeks ago and i started taking up sports again( i am a badminton player) and have no complaints at all.
Also a guitarplayer and i picked up the guitar after a few days after i had my surgery...sitting down, but i had to get playing again!!!
Also had the sharp stabbing pain in the stomach when lying in bed sometimes, but this is all gone now, so i guess you will be fine too.
    Greatings and a good recovery!!
    Ron from the Netherlands.

Were you able to practice sitting with the guitar and if so how soon?
Just had it done and am a drummer and day 5 now of recovery and just did some practice not using my feet but just using hands. Hopefully not doing any damage. Not much info out there for working musicians (other than a few horn forums about this) to get any advice from personal experiences.

Took about a week before I could sit comfortably with a guitar, took 2/3 weeks before i was back gigging 💪

I'm waiting for Inguinal Surgery on a large hernia in my groin, only one side for me. I've had mine for about 9 months, no real pain, but a couple of months ago it kept popping out and it was absolute agony, one of the worst pains ever. So because of the risk of it strangulating, I've got to have the surgery. I'm also possibly facing surgery on both my arms because I've got entrapped ulnar nerves in both arms. I've lost strength and muscle in my hands, especially the left side as unfortunately this has been going on for quite some time and the doctor was disinterested, as they have a tendency to be. As a result, I've had to have a scan on my neck, and something has been found there, I'm not sure what but the doctor needs to speak to me next week as it's urgent apparently. Oh and I'm high risk of anaesthesia due to existing heart problems. Happy days!!
