I think that using the term “homophobic attack” implies that the youths were somewhat justified by their “instinctive” fear or revulsion And that the term faintly implies that the youths were provoked because the victims had undoubtedly made unwanted overtures toward them of a homosexual nature.
How was it a hate crime they attacked straight people as well or do you just want special treatment for being gay the only common denominator was white male is this a hate crime towards white males .
It's from their upbringing. Many children have narcissists/sociopaths as parents. Child neglect/abuse is swept under a rug in the majority of cases. YES, they're guilty and must serve time in prison, but society needs to acknowledge that criminals are not born criminals.

Lack of universal early parenting education, long term treatment for trauma and early intensive intervention in these homes would make crime nosedive. Reduction of alcoholism in countries where this is a major problem would also yield a sharp reduction in crime for a variety of reasons.

Only one of the victims was gay. Given their ages they might not have known who he was or his sexual orientation.

I used to go carousing until dawn when I was a young fellow. Those were different times. It is no longer safe to be out after 10pm - Anywhere
