The Eternals movie retroactively makes Thanos the hero of the story since Celestials are created by destroying a planet once it's populated enough by intelligent life. Even though he was halving the population, it's still better than the destruction of the planets and everyone on them.
Thanos' purpose was avoiding general supply deficit which consequences of it would be terrible for the entire planet (civilization). He would have to snap his fingers every 100 years. I'm actually really glad Kennedy hasnt resigned. She has made me so much money. The new Star wars stuff has been so bad that legacy Star wars items prices have skyrocketed in the past few years. I have a retro used game store with collectible stuff, and the legacy Star wars stuff has been gold since that Rian Johnson Star Wars movie. I honestly hope she runs it into the ground. I feel awful for the fans I really do, but wow her terrible decisions do make me so much money.
And on the other hand after she cancelled EU, they cancelled contract with company translating The Old Republic comic series. I loved first "books" as a kid and really wanted to get them all when I've heard they are finally releasing full series in my country. Sadly, I am not interested in paying current prices for few english ones available to me.
It would appear from the quarterly report that the Marketing Dept. was responsible for the losses. With the supply chain problems that's not surprising. Shang-Chi and eternals are newer characters so you have 1 less generation of "built-in" fans as opposed to the older characters. And yes, the writing has to be good. Guardians of the Galaxy were newer characters and still were a hit.
Too many characters nobody really knew much about in Eternals, unlike Avengers, and yes, the writing and characterization has to win people over for an unknown group. Look at the success of Guardian of the Galaxy which delivered on story and cast characters, writer and director, unlike Eternals. Disney needs to make comparisons for their success formula.
It was a loss of money from disney cancelling distribution deals to other streaming services and such. Because they are moving the content to disney+ Not very exciting but the truth rarely is when it comes to quarterly reports for corporations.
Both Shang Chi and the Eternals were created in the early 70s, and Shang Chi was a pretty big hit for years. Eternals was always obscure, dull, and extremely low interest bit that wasn't really used much in the following years.
The top three movies of the year are Marvel movies (Shang-Chi is the most successful movie of the year). Hawkeye was always the least popular Avenger, therefore it's no wonder that his show is, at least initially, the least successful series.

As someone who owns hundreds upon hundreds of dvd's and blu-rays, I've had ample opportunity to watch Eternals for free, same with the new James Bond, but I feel like my time is more valuable.

It is unfair to say that Shang Chi lost money because Disney's 4th Quarter reports the quarter up to October 2nd. At that cut-off date, Shang Chi was still showing in the theatres. The film was also released after October 2nd in countries like Thailand ( Oct 7), Malaysia (Oct 13) and the Philipines (November 12). The loss reported by the Disney film division was a collective loss from the following films: Black Widow, Jungle Cruise, Free Guy, The Night House, Vacation Friends, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. You choose to mention only Black Widow and Shang-Chi, giving the impression that the film division's loss was attributed to only these 2 films.

Filmmakers used to talk about "empathetic" characters. Characters who the audience could empathise with but they may have had, superficially, nothing much in common with at all. Now, "relatable" characters are the only ones audiences are supposed to care about i.e. characters with whom the audience share only superficial characteristics. Empathetic characters meant sharing something deeper - humanity, aspirations, human emotions, imagination. We were encouraged to root for people who were not on the surface anything like us, facing situations which were were never likely to be closely replicated in our own lives. To my mind, that encouraged us to be better people, more able to accept differences when we could appreciate a common humanity. The modern relatable characters are tick-box lists of attributes most of us don't have, doing things that we don't actually relate to because they are regulated by attitudes we don't share and there only to illustrate an unwelcome, hectoring lecture. If we are now being encouraged to will on to success only those people with whom we share exactly the same physical and mental, emotional and ideological characteristics then it's no wonder that anyone who doesn't share those attributes is going to be alienated and turn away. The major corporations are, in effect, putting out niche agitprop arthouse fare, of the sort which used to be made on tiny budgets for tiny audiences, but disguised with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of CGI tinsel. The audiences are increasingly seeing through the disguise and dwindling accordingly.

Technically, the shareholders - if they desert fast enough - will make them care since Disney is a blue chip share that has value due to its dividends (profits). If no profits, the shares will be a potential for a hostile takeover (something they won't allow) so they are going to end up selling the parks abroad and end up potentially dropping out of a medium to make money.

What does Disney expect with such poor scripts, and I wouldn't get your hopes up for Spider-Man, it simply feels like Disney/Marvel have ran out of ideas. It's the same with the TV shows, Mandalorian, Loki, Wandavision, they are all aimed at the teen market. No depth or character development. High ratings on IMDB from the teen market and the die hard fans, while the rest of us scream in despair at how bad these shows are. Both Shang-Chi and Loki actually made me angry at how poor they were, the latter been one of my favourite Marvel characters. It feels like poor scripts are becoming the norm, just look at the constant lightweight drivel that is churned out on Netflix. Maybe it's an age thing, and that anyone over 30/35 is just going to have to accept that they is less and less quality out there as the big players find it easier to pander to the less developed minds of the teen market

Jessica Gao is the main writer of She-Hulk, and she wrote the Pickle Rick episode of Rick and Morty. Schwartz is one of 5 other writers, so i don't think we should lose hope. Bishka on the other hand is the main writer on Ms Marvel, although that got pushed back behind Hawkeye despite shooting before Hawkeye, so maybe they saw the light and rewrote it.

I grew up in the 70's reading 25 cent comic books. I am literally Disney/Marvel's expected/likely customer base. However, I have absolutely zero desire to watch The Eternals. Also, the only version of Ms Marvel I want to see, is the movie where she loses her powers and is put into a coma by Rogue! p.s. Dune was awesome.
We are definitely getting the MCU version of All New All Different Marvel which when compounded by the oversaturation of content is going to quickly affect the bottom line. And frankly, they might not even care.

Except Moon Knight is hardly well known. Even making this really well is still somewhat scraping the barrel when Disney has loads of its most popular characters it could still work with. I'd bet that even a re-boot of Iron-Man in an alternate universe with a new actor would generate more money.
I liked Black Widow! The key is to view it as a dysfunctional family romp rather then a serious superhero movie. The interactions between the family members were often hilarious. Perhaps one day Disney will get the message "go woke, go broke".

They made a lot of money because have to pay before watching. If you want to see how popular a movie is you don't look at the sales numbers, you look at the audience reviews. People have to pay to see a movie before they can decide if they enjoyed it or not.

I used to be a relatively regular movie goer. At least once a month for a new release, sometimes more if it was an interesting year. Last time I was in to see a movie was Free Guy back in August, before that there might have been a screening of The African Queen back in May. Things have just not been good lately.

I'm actually really glad Kennedy hasnt resigned. She has made me so much money. The new Star wars stuff has been so bad that legacy Star wars items prices have skyrocketed in the past few years. It would appear from the quarterly report that the Marketing Dept. was responsible for the losses. With the supply chain problems that's not surprising. Shang-Chi and eternals are newer characters so you have 1 less generation of "built-in" fans as opposed to the older characters. And yes, the writing has to be good. Guardians of the Galaxy were newer characters and still were a hit.
Too many characters nobody really knew much about in Eternals, unlike Avengers, and yes, the writing and characterization has to win people over for an unknown group. Look at the success of Guardian of the Galaxy which delivered on story and cast characters, writer and director, unlike Eternals. Disney needs to make comparisons for their success formula.

Both Shang Chi and the Eternals were created in the early 70s, and Shang Chi was a pretty big hit for years. Eternals was always obscure, dull, and extremely low interest bit that wasn't really used much in the following years.
The top three movies of the year are Marvel movies (Shang-Chi is the most successful movie of the year). Hawkeye was always the least popular Avenger, therefore it's no wonder that his show is, at least initially, the least successful series.

As someone who owns hundreds upon hundreds of dvd's and blu-rays, I've had ample opportunity to watch Eternals for free, same with the new James Bond, but I feel like my time is more valuable.
Having just seen Eternals I can say what a steaming pile of doodoo. By far the worst Marvel movie ever! If Disney dont pull back on the woke culture it's trying to force down peoples throats it will kill the MCU. I'm really hoping the next Spidey movie continues everything we know and love about marvel movies.

And it is true that Fast and Furious did a big box office, but it is the only movie that has made more than 500 million this year. If Marvel movies had been released in a normal year, they would have made 600 or even 700 million.

It is unfair to say that Shang Chi lost money because Disney's 4th Quarter reports the quarter up to October 2nd. At that cut-off date, Shang Chi was still showing in the theatres. The film was also released after October 2nd in countries like Thailand ( Oct 7), Malaysia (Oct 13) and the Philipines (November 12). The loss reported by the Disney film division was a collective loss from the following films: Black Widow, Jungle Cruise, Free Guy, The Night House, Vacation Friends, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. You choose to mention only Black Widow and Shang-Chi, giving the impression that the film division's loss was attributed to only these 2 films.

Filmmakers used to talk about "empathetic" characters. Characters who the audience could empathise with but they may have had, superficially, nothing much in common with at all. Now, "relatable" characters are the only ones audiences are supposed to care about i.e. characters with whom the audience share only superficial characteristics.
Empathetic characters meant sharing something deeper - humanity, aspirations, human emotions, imagination. We were encouraged to root for people who were not on the surface anything like us, facing situations which were were never likely to be closely replicated in our own lives. To my mind, that encouraged us to be better people, more able to accept differences when we could appreciate a common humanity.
The modern relatable characters are tick-box lists of attributes most of us don't have, doing things that we don't actually relate to because they are regulated by attitudes we don't share and there only to illustrate an unwelcome, hectoring lecture.
If we are now being encouraged to will on to success only those people with whom we share exactly the same physical and mental, emotional and ideological characteristics then it's no wonder that anyone who doesn't share those attributes is going to be alienated and turn away.
The major corporations are, in effect, putting out niche agitprop arthouse fare, of the sort which used to be made on tiny budgets for tiny audiences, but disguised with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of CGI tinsel. The audiences are increasingly seeing through the disguise and dwindling accordingly.
There is something ironic about when Disney literally put its hand on everything on this planet, this was the moment when the numbers started imploding and its projects started loosing sht loads of money.
I was going to go to the theater and watch the eternals.
But instead, I stayed home and dropped hammers on my feet until I cried white male tears.
I then used the magical powers of the MWTs to clean my Clint Eastwood dvd collection.
I believe I made the right choice.

Technically, the shareholders - if they desert fast enough - will make them care since Disney is a blue chip share that has value due to its dividends (profits). If no profits, the shares will be a potential for a hostile takeover (something they won't allow) so they are going to end up selling the parks abroad and end up potentially dropping out of a medium to make money.

What does Disney expect with such poor scripts, and I wouldn't get your hopes up for Spider-Man, it simply feels like Disney/Marvel have ran out of ideas. It's the same with the TV shows, Mandalorian, Loki, Wandavision, they are all aimed at the teen market. No depth or character development. High ratings on IMDB from the teen market and the die hard fans, while the rest of us scream in despair at how bad these shows are. Both Shang-Chi and Loki actually made me angry at how poor they were, the latter been one of my favourite Marvel characters.
It feels like poor scripts are becoming the norm, just look at the constant lightweight drivel that is churned out on Netflix. Maybe it's an age thing, and that anyone over 30/35 is just going to have to accept that they is less and less quality out there as the big players find it easier to pander to the less developed minds of the teen market

The really funny thing about Clifford being JUST behind The Eternals is that Clifford is also available for streaming on Paramount+! Which means that if people had to actually go to the theater to see Clifford, it would have BURIED The Eternals!!!

I had a bad day at work. I came home cranky. My husband (being the amazing person he is) wanted to make me feel better so he suggested we go see the eternals... This made me bitter. I said so I'm in a bad mood and you want to know if I want to go see a move put out by a company that hates me and my views and want to take down the white male (my husband being a white male). He told me I was overreacting. What happened at the end of the movie? Enyone remember? The white male is villafied and he flies into the sun killing himself. You tell me if I over reacted....
The recent Suicide Squad did that too. By the end of the movie every white man was dead or a villain and the strong women had to save the day. Even the black man and the shark didn't get to do crap. But at least that was more entertaining overall.

Jessica Gao is the main writer of She-Hulk, and she wrote the Pickle Rick episode of Rick and Morty. Schwartz is one of 5 other writers, so i don't think we should lose hope.
Bishka on the other hand is the main writer on Ms Marvel, although that got pushed back behind Hawkeye despite shooting before Hawkeye, so maybe they saw the light and rewrote it.

I grew up in the 70's reading 25 cent comic books. I am literally Disney/Marvel's expected/likely customer base. However, I have absolutely zero desire to watch The Eternals. Also, the only version of Ms Marvel I want to see, is the movie where she loses her powers and is put into a coma by Rogue! p.s. Dune was awesome.

We are definitely getting the MCU version of All New All Different Marvel which when compounded by the oversaturation of content is going to quickly affect the bottom line. And frankly, they might not even care.

Agree with you 100% about Moon Knight. Oscar is perfect casting and if,(..IF..), they write it well it could turn into an amazing property for Marvel. HUGE potential to reinvigorate the whole fan base… But everything else is meh
Except Moon Knight is hardly well known. Even making this really well is still somewhat scraping the barrel when Disney has loads of its most popular characters it could still work with. I'd bet that even a re-boot of Iron-Man in an alternate universe with a new actor would generate more money.

I liked Black Widow! The key is to view it as a dysfunctional family romp rather then a serious superhero movie. The interactions between the family members were often hilarious. Perhaps one day Disney will get the message "go woke, go broke".
I liked Black Widow. Was fun. Shang-chi was a touch laboured & The Eternals was so poor I stopped watching 30 mins in.
Basking in Disney's failures has become my new hobby, it costs me nothing while regenerating my soul. Marvel is dead to me and I am okay with that, it had a good run.

@@Fantallana I'm a bit late here but I feel the need to point out that both of those movies came out at a time when hype for The Avengers was at it's peak and both Black panther and Captain Marvel were going to be in the highly anticipated and massively successful Infinity War. They made a lot of money because have to pay before watching.
If you want to see how popular a movie is you don't look at the sales numbers, you look at the audience reviews. People have to pay to see a movie before they can decide if they enjoyed it or not.

I used to be a relatively regular movie goer. At least once a month for a new release, sometimes more if it was an interesting year. Last time I was in to see a movie was Free Guy back in August, before that there might have been a screening of The African Queen back in May. Things have just not been good lately.
I haven't been to a theater since 2009 and haven't even considered going back at any point I'm the last 12 years.
I used to go to the movie theater once a month as well. Then the pandemic hit. Lock down eased up and nothing that has been coming out have been a "I need to see that in theaters" except for one film.

The problem, or one of the problems, with Eternals is the introduction of so many new characters where we have no emotional connection to them. We might have a different view of Eternals after we see where Marvel takes them.

- the above couple kissing passionately
- 2 interracial relationships
- an asian female leader
- a film directed by a Chinese woman
- a mute girl with superpowers
- an evil villain who is a white male
- a powerful Indian character who isn’t just the IT nerd
Things it can do better
- why he and she, genders assumed, use they please, dislike
- 2 people who died were people of colour, yet the white people survived
- no transsexuals, everyone is binary
- fetishisation of asian females by white men
- didn’t condemn Donald trump
- the God figure was a male
- strongest hero was a white guy
- black son of gay couple was made to participate in stereotypical toxic masculine activities such as playing football
Overall a very good start, I believe the strong campaigning for social justice overcame minor points such as
- the lack of chemistry between any of the forced romantic relationships
- the lack of chemistry between any of the heroes
- the lack of interesting powers possessed by the heroes
- no character development
- confusing names - can anyone name all the heroes without googling
- the illogical plot -> big red boy created the universe but lost control of a bunch of blue animals, ok then
I am confident that the soaring consumer demand for movies like this will be demonstrated when it quickly overtakes Avengers Endgame as the highest grossing Marvel movie ever

When asked who the Guardians were I could, Eternals, Ironheart, Thanos, Darkseid, Swamp Thing, the Endless, Agatha Harkness..... I can go on.
