The nice thing is if you shoot mirrorless, AF calibration is not an issue. The Sigma Arts on my 5DIV DSLR would be very iffy with autofocus. But once I go the R the focus never missed.
That's the advantage of the Canon system is that adapted lenses work just as well as native RF lenses. In fact, my Sigma Art 50 focuses twice as fast as the RF 50 1.2, and it's basically just as sharp, and cost 1/3 as much as the Canon. I saved over $2000 cdn by getting the Sigma Art 50 and it comes with a 7 year Sigma Art warranty vs only 1 year for the Canon.
So, this lens is great option for Canon R series?
Never watched anyone talking so passionately about their lenses… love it!
Even though it gave me fits at times, I have a special place in my heart for the Sigma 35 1.4. It was on my D810 for the majority of the time. I hope Nikon makes a deal with Sigma for its Z system!
I know! I would actually love to have the 50 1.4 on my Z body, if I'm doing personal work, or traveling or something, so I don't have to take my 50 1.2.
I can't imagine getting rid of my sigma art lenses.
They do so much for my business
that's true! they are great!
Do you have problem with fine tune with D750?
Mine was +19 and still back focusing sometimes.
How does it perform outdoors in terms of weather protection? How does it fare against weather moist etc? Thanks
Still kept my F mount SIGMA ARTs with my two mirrorless bodies, there's absolutely no reason to switch, best lenses I've owned.... It had problems with my DSLRs but once adapted on my Z8, it was Flawless
35 mm 1.4 ART
24-35mm f2 ART
50mm 1.4 ART
85mm 1.4 ART
135mm 1.8 ART
so what are you using now?
Same thing for me. Sigma Art opened a new world for me!
Been through the 35, 50, 85, and 135. They are all fantastic! Sold them now, since I'm currently using the Nikon Z6/Z7. But I kept the Sigma Art 40 (spectactular) and Art 105. Those two lenses are gems I don't think I can ever sell.
Wow you used a lot of them! They are amazing aren't they?!?
Totally. I never used the 40 but heard good things.
You get that problems focusing in mirror less cameras to?
100% agreed on calibration. I sent my 24-70 art and 100-400 C to sigma with my d750 for calibration. They do for free if lens is under warranty. Just one way shipping cost. But after calibration I love those lenses.
Oh good to know! I should have sent mine in instead of doing it myself! haha.
What was it that made you realise the lens wasn't calibrated properly? I'd assume a brand new lens would be calibrated already.
I really love my sigmas, particularly primes on sony a7r ii and v. Beautiful rendering. Decided to standarize on sigma, as makes it easier to edit with a common feel.
Have the 28 1.4, 35 2.0, 40 1.4, 45 2.8, 65 2.0, 110 2.8 and for zooms the 16-28 and 200-600.
The 28mm is my favorite.
I do not have any issues with autofocus with any of the sigmas, particularly with the sony a7rv.
The only one not crazy about is the 16-28, while techincally good. it just does not have the colors and rendering that the primes do.
The 28 and 40 arts can allow us to take full advantage of light when there (or added) to give a medium format hassy look on full frame.
I find the weight of the 28 fine, but the weight of the 40 does have some hesitation to it, but glad Sigma did not compromise on it.
HI, I agree with you. SIgma art 50mm f1.4 is the best before Nikon launched its mirrorless camera. When I was still using DSLR (D800 & D810), it did happen to me few times this sigma lense miss focus and it did stress me a lot. After I bought Nikon Z6ii with the adapter, it focus perfectly. I guess mirroless control the focus directly from the sensor, not like DSLR that indirectly connect to the sensor before the shutter were released. Which 50mm are you using now and how do you feel compare to the SIgma 50mm art?
Yes I thought that too, when I used it the 35mm 1.4 Sigma Art, I thought it was so much faster!
Nikon 50 1.2 ! I'm guessing you watched that video. But really, if the sigma 50 1.4 works well on it, that would be really great alternative, because the Nikon 1.2 is very expensive.
What camera were you using these lenses with? I'm considering getting one (maybe 2) to use with an FTZ and Z30
I was using with the Nikon d750. They work well with the FTZ
I'm actually going in the opposite direction 🤣. I'm swapping out most of my Sony lenses for the Sigma alternatives. I much prefer the color/contrast from Sigma vs. Sony. Honestly, every lens is incredible nowadays so just get out there and use 'em! Love your photo editing style!!
haha nice - that's awesome! If they had a Z mount for Nikon, I would seriously consider it.
Very true! Thanks very much!
These lenses are so good. Most of the times the focus is good, sometimes it misses. The images are very sharp. I use the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm from Sigma for 3 years now.
love your passion ! but love my 85 mm sigma art even more 😉 indeed put photos to an another level !
😂
What lens are you using for recording this video? looks amazing.
Thanks! I believe it was the Nikon Z 50 1.2 or the 35 1.8
I can tell you right now there is no chance you achieved that bokeh with a 35 1.8. So let's just say the 50 1.2 lol.@@lukewtcleland
Hey mate,
Great vid! Just a question. I've got a z7ii and just ordered the 50mm art... will it still work well? I can't quite afford z lenses at the moment!
As long as you have the ftz adapter, then yes, it will work.
Hey Micah, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
It will definitely work well. It focuses I think quicker than it did on my SLR body. Another option is to look at the Nikon Z 50 1.8. Which is MUCH cheaper than the 50 1.2, and also cheaper than the sigma 1.4 (at least new).
@@lukewtcleland hey! Thanks for the reply. I ended up getting the art 1.4 second half for more than half the price from a camera store, almost brand new condition! Can't wait to use it. Thank you again
@@micahdee1 oh wow that's awesome!! You'll love it!
My 50mm is pretty accurate on my 6D though I tend to use it at f2 but my 35mm has this hiccup where it will focus somewhere else at times so I have to take a few shots to make sure I get a decent shot. As an amateur that’s fine but for pros that’s not good. However mirrorless has changed the game so much that Canon won’t let Sigma near their RF mount.
Ha yeah. I totally had that issue with my 50 (I think, maybe it was my 35 too), as well. It would just need a couple shots to get it. Totally, I have so much more trust in these mirrorless lenses to get it the first time.
What was this shot on? I love the look.
Thanks! I believe it was my Nikon 50 1.2
@@lukewtcleland Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. I hate the fact that I own the Sigma 40mm F1.4, and it looks as amazing as people say quality wise, but the focal length of a 50mm just looks better to my eye. Its tough because Sigma's 50mm they just released is their worst lens yet in quality imo. Jealous of that 50mm F1.2. Both the Nikon and the Sony look incredible. Rounder bokeh than the Sigma 50 by a mile too.
I've just gone the other way, I mostly use manual Zeiss lenses but I picked up the Sigma 24-70 2.8 for my work jobs were I don't need to bring 4-6 manual focus primes and risk damaging those on a simple shoot! Their auto focus is not very good compared to a dedicated manual lens. What lenses are you using now?
Oooo Beautiful! I love it!
I use mostly the Nikon Z 50 1.2. And a few other of the Z prime lenses. That's for digital, and then for my film camera it's a Zeiss Contax 80mm f/2 Planar T*
@@lukewtcleland Wonderful! I have a Zeiss 85mm 1.4 and it's so sharp it's wild.
Hey there Luke. Thank you for your feedback on the Sigma lenses. I am in the process of figuring out which 35mm to add to my collection and having a hard time. I have an 85mm 1.4 Art lens and love it! The only downside for me is that it is heck-a-HEAVY. I do like the feel of it, at first, but after an hour of shooting it starts to get annoying. The heaviness adds a bit of stability for me and do like that.
Now, I may have missed it, but why did you get rid of your Sigma lenses if you loved them so much?
I have a Z8 that I am wanting to pair up with a 35mm and debating between the Sigma 35mm Art and the Nikkor 35mm 1.8. If you have any thoughts I would love your feedback.
Hey Irene! Thanks for watching. So I got rid of them because I really liked the Z lenses. That doesn't mean they are better in every way, but I didn't want to deal with adaptors primarily, and all the Z lenses are pretty light for what they are, and of course excellent image quality. I have the Z 35mm 1.8, and it's a great lens. To be honest, I think there is a little more character in the Sigma 35 1.4, but its not my main lens so I wasn't overly concerned about it. There are Sigma Z mount lenses, but 30mm not 35. So that could be interested to try. If you're in the US or Canada I'd suggest renting lenses. It's a really great way to test things out before you buy. Hope that helps!
@@lukewtcleland thanks for your thoughts. Now that you've had your 35mm S for a bit, can you tell me how you like the sharpness on it? I've seen other videos where they indicate the sharpness is good, but that the Tamron may be better? I too don't really want to fiddle with the adapter any longer and would really love it to be lighter.
Irene I use lots of Sigma art lenses on my z8, most of them are crisp and sharp, but 85 1.4 acts, strange, blurry images from 1.4 to 2.8. Did you had any issues with your 85 on z8. What would you say about performance wide open at F 1.4?
@@hrvojematiasslebur7196 hey there...sorry for my delay. So, I have to say that the only issue I have had with my 85 is the focus point/area. It tends to focus a smidge below where I am actually putting my focal point at. After googling (which I am sure you know) I found out that I should calibrate my lens to fix this. I haven't had a chance to do that yet so I cannot tell you if it fixed anything, but hoping to do so by end of week. Other than that I haven't noticed any un-usual blurring ...I love my Sigma 85 Art. It's just a beast to carry around. I ended up purchasing the 35mm S lens (for my Z8 camera) for a recent trip to Japan. I wanted to go as light as possible. It took some beautifully sharp/crips images, but did feel that the images were a little on the flat side. Now, it could just be me being accustomed to the beautiful color the Sigma Art lens gives. Needing to play with it a bit more. I would like a 50mm and debating on which I should get...the Nikkor S or the Sigma Art? Any thoughts on that?
@@irenecolgan4449 thank you for your answer :) first to answer you question. Never used 50mm Sigma 1.4 butnI heard a lot of great stuff about that lens. I have 35 1.4 from Sigma and I love that lens(i still use it on z8).
About 85mm 1.4 I do know they sometimes need calibration when used on dslr, but that should not be the case when used on z8. It takes focus completly differently and I read a lot and conclusion is there is no need fot calibration. So I sent the lens to Sigma for service to see if some glass shifted or someting. About 50mm, I just bought yesterday 50 1.8S Nikon will test it today. :)
It is not entirely clear what really made you drop them. I admit that when I got my 50 1.8S to go with the Z6ii I was surprised by the lift in quality from the optics (sharpness, edge to edge focus quality, colour depth and lack of chromatic aberrations). What was it about the Sigma that didn’t quite work with the Z camera bodies?
My number 1 issue was adaptors. I can't deal with that and be a wedding photographer.
Second, while I really liked the sigmas, the jump in quality, especially when I used the 50 1.2 was amazing. I think while the Sigmas are great lenses, and they work well with the adaptor, you can't compare them to the new Z line in use with a Z body.
I think from a business point of view sigma will have to one day discontinue all its dslr art lens. But these lens are real gems…..when you look at those ridiculous huge Nikon z primes with high prices people will realize how great these lens are. Sigma can make them smaller for mirrorless but not optically superior.
They are great lenses! So are the z. They are huge but very light for how big they are. But I'll always love those art lenses
Sigma Art: 40mm, is best resolution & distortion control..
👏
Ooo never tried that. Sounds amazing!
@Luke Cleland
Resolves 8k & has under 1% distortion..however, for this, the dslr version is 1.2kg. Sigma currently working on the smaller 'dc dn' version I'm told for Mirrorless.
@@Stop-All-War cool!! Would be interesting to see that new version if it comes out!
Years ago I bought a Sigma Apo zoom lens. It was fine while it worked, but when the AF failed there were no parts available to repair it. So I sold it at a considerable loss and never bought Sigma again. Now I only use Canon and Zeiss lenses.
I will say the prime art lenses were built extremely well. Never used the zoom lenses from Sigma.
@@lukewtcleland What use is a lens that can't be repaired?
@@paulhenry7 I guess it depends if they still service the lenses that you buy. They still service and fix the art lenses
@@lukewtcleland No one had parts for it, and I was not impressed with Sigma's attitude.
@@paulhenry7 Yeah that's super frustrating!
No Canon L or Nikon lens I ever had even remotely had the build quality of Sigma Art. Especially the play of the parts is non existent, whereas a 1200€ Nikon lens is creaking and stuttering during zooming. So especially for filming, those are true gems, though in bright environments you definitely need stopping down!
you cannot remember when you were married ??? @ 6.48 mins .... my wife would kill me if I said that... PS. just bought one of these for my Nikon D750, and it is absolutely fantastic.
Hahah no. Not OUR wedding day, on A wedding day. We’re wedding photographers.
Ooo yes! I used them on a D750 as well. Incredible combination. Enjoy!!
Never gonna sell my art lenses, even if I got the Z lenses
They made my workflow easier, the AF on Mirrorless is snappy AF
You love these lenses and yet you got rid of them...i dont understand
50 mm ??? Are not talking about 40mm????
Please say bokeh correctly
probably not.
@@lukewtcleland why not? It would be respectful to the history and culture behind the Japanese word that is pronounced as it is spelled. Anything else would be just ignorant stubbornness
@@kanglee7244 lol
@@lukewtcleland wow so condescending… your short replies speak show your lack of maturity.
