Thanks for the comments, omg the issues could have been prevented but the build got into the $10,000 range and I started cutting corners that's where I had issues. I've been trying to find an actual driving video of a 7.3 and I finally found it! Love the sound of a 7.3 under alot of load love these trucks with the zf6
I have an 02 f350 with the 4r100, Ive been contemplating getting another auto or converting it to a zf6...I want the option of being able to haul heavy loads. I'm assuming this guy has the zf6, if so, it obviously can handle the weight 😎👍
I hotshot with my 99 7.3 pulling a 40 ft gooseneck weighing 6600 lbs. Truck and trailer is around 17k. I weighed 32k once and the trucked did good but stopping was another thing!
Truck can handle that load easy, my grandpa used to haul a 20ton skid steer all the time. Always hauled it like a dream. He had upgraded trailer brakes and truck brakes. 7.3 is the best diesel ever made in my opinion. Thanks for the great video!
Dude first off yes 7.3 is great, but not buying that. First off no one in the world makes a 20 ton skid steer. That's 40,000 lbs the biggest is like 12,000 if that. Second no pickup truck especially an older 7.3 is going to pull a 20 ton machine. The gearing in a pickup isn't made for that and also being you would need a 25 ton trailer he would have needed air brakes not legal with a pickup. Either you're making this up or you're a little confused what he pulled
do know that pick up trucks have been hauling 40k plus for years and yea a 7.3 will do it and can legally do it but when it comes to newer trucks they can do that with ease we use to use an 03 f450 to haul an excavator and additional equipment to the jobs the truck was registered with dot and was legally allowed to tow upto 54k I've never seen it or drove it with more than 46k being hauled the biggest thing is making sure ur tires are rated for the weight and upgrading ur brakes is a good idea aswell as a trailer brake is legally required
My 7.3 has ebpv delete If you ever upgrade your turbo. I have the zf6 in mine and I do a lot of heavy towing. I've tried kc300x 63/73 and it was definitely not good for towing so I thought I'd try a gtp38r with 1.0ar housing and still no good. After a lot more research I ended up getting a kc38r cartridge to see if that would help but no luck with that and I just wasn't enjoying driving the truck because it was so laggy. A month later I had an idea to swap the .84ar housing from my stock turbo to the gtp38r so I did a bit of research and you can't find anything on this so I just went ahead and swapped it out. I disconnected the waste gate as well and the difference was night and day, I couldn't be more happier. I never go over 2100rpm and I drive it like a truck. It is a low end torque monster now. For anyone wanting loads of low end torque for towing with your 6 speed I highly recommend the gtp38r with .84ar housing. You can't beat the spool up of a ball bearing turbo. My truck has 300,000 on this turbo setup now and never missed a beat.
Me and Joel 2020 Hotshot trucking updated my turbo and I had unhooked that crap before that. I see a lot of comments on here about bigger turbo and less egt's but I have also talked to two people who have mixed views on a bigger turbo with lower egt's when pulling hard so I may try your setup but first I'm going to change the wicked wheel back to a 5+5 I'm pretty sure that will change my low end boost significantly from the 7+7
Hey man you can’t beat a 7.3 I had a 88 idi with 5 ton on the rear axle. Grandpa had a dump bed installed. But it handled it like a champ. Braking was a lil sketchy but pulled like a train.
Hey Scott...Thanks for the shout out! I just installed a temporary 7.3 with 219K on it to get my truck back running. Shot footage of my loaded test drive as I took the CoPart wreck remains for scrap. Didn't hit record during the main section showing my acceleration uphill. My block and heads are back from the machine shop and my donor truck had a ZF6 that I will be installing when the rebuild is done. What tune are you running on your Hydra? Your EGT is real low for that low boost. I ran the 65 HP tune with 21K gross weight and hit 1200 fairly easily, and was hitting up to 22 PSI boost.
Since I had this engine built its got so much power that I could run it on stock and out pull many trucks out there. I keep it on 50hp performance I never change it, I ran it on the extreme 140hp, it's not that much fun because you can't change gears fast enough. I'm running 4:10 gears I wished it was a automatic transmission with a John wood valve body and 6.0 cooler that's the best transmission setup in my opinion. From 40mph to 75 it's ridiculously insane lol
@@scottbaker4314 That's what daily drivers are for...to have fun with! I need to figure out what level of HP to run on the Hyrda while towing. The 65 HP on the donor motor is pretty hot. I bought 160/30 injectors for my rebuild and have custom tunes for the Hydra. I'll be running a ZF6 with that also so I'll be in the same boat as you so to speak with my 4.10's. My DD has 3.73's.
@2020 Hot Shot Trucking LLC are you going to run a 4" to 5" exhaust and the 6637 air filter? I cut out the drivers side headlight header and battery box so the bigger injectors and filter can pull as much clean air in I just made a angle iron bracket to hold the battery in place
@@scottbaker4314 I have a Diamond Eye 4" turbo back SSTL exhaust and a 6637. With stock injectors this gave me a 1 MPG gain and reduced the EGT's so I no longer have to lift off the throttle when pulling hills to keep the EGT's down. I'd like to make baffles to pull more outside air and less hot air in, but everything I've read shows that with the intercooler it's not necessary. I'm planning on getting some temperature readings to check this out.
I have the 4r100 w/JW body valve and a mishimoto cooler which is better than the 6.0 in my opinion. I agree it will shift faster but trust me the 6 speed manual is better with towing heavy. I'm looking to either do a 6 manual swap or a allison conversion which would cost me 10-13k. If you plan on doing a turbo swap either a KC 63/68 .84 for a manual and KC 63/73 .84 for a automatic.
Curious as to what parts you used for your build. Injectors, turbo, fuel stuff, etc. I can see the Hydra, but whose tunes are you running? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I just picked up my first 7.3 (01 crew cab 4x4) a couple months ago, so I'm trying to learn all I can about them. Love these things!

But from time to time I'll haul a bigger vehicles for a friend. My main question is about moving from a dead stop. Do I start in low then move to second or do you just slip the clutch a little in first? Any tips/trick would be greatly appreciated. I really wanna take care of this truck and not screw it up, because like you mentioned in your video...I can't afford a newer 6.7 either lol!
Low is low. First is first. So with any real weight, start in low and once you are moving shift to first and then through the gears. Altitude is a big factor too. With 5k lbs at lower altitudes you are likely good just starting in first. Once you go above 5k or high altitudes you’ll want to start in low and then once you are moving shift into first. And don’t rev low out or the truck won’t like shifting into first. Maybe up to 1500-2000 (if the load isn’t too heavy) then gently shift into first.
Do not give any accelerator pedal when taking off, only apply accelerator pedal after clutch is all the way out. With a little trailer and Miata If your level or pointing downhill a little you can try 1st gear, if the engine struggles too much when letting out clutch, then use low instead. If your pointing uphill with a load, i always just use low gear to take off as there is no need to burn the clutch trying to take off in 1st. Some of my videos on my channel i should have a few examples.
I own a dumpster company based out of south Florida my main truck is a bone stock 01 7.3 my 7.5 yard trailer ways 4100 dry and I pull 4-5 tons pretty often and it pulls just fine maybe a little slow to get up and going but when she’s going she’s good. Just ordered a intake from riff raff, 5 inch down pipe and full straight pipe. Looking to get some tunes by jelibuilt performance too
Love these heavy haul videos. Keep it up. Real life doesn't always work out as planned. God gave you a brain to solve problems. If you had $30k to build a hotshot truck, what would you make? Or just buy the newest thing 30k gets u?
It's a 350hp short block, head work flow bench tested, arp head studs, steel forged connecting rods, malhe ceramic coated pistons, full force stage 1.5 injectors, stock turbo with a 7+7 wicked wheel, k&n cold air with a 6637 air filter, hydra tuner with power hungry performance tunes, stage 1.5 south bend clutch.i know I'm forgetting something but I will try and find the build receipt and do a video on it

danm love the truck talking bout a new 6.7 i just not to long ago picked up a 82k retail truck for 64k 2019 6.7 platinum had like 10k miles on it...... gonna sell it pretty soon and dump the extra cash in my 6.0 because i was appalled by the fuel economy my 6.0 a 2005 harley davidson edition gets 29 mpg highway unloaded and 20 loaded with about 9,000 lbs. new 6.7 gets 14.1 mpg highway and same load 13.5-13.9 it doesnt pull nearly as good i think. i got the 6 speed. i just dont like it because its alot of electronic crap nowadays you can't not get the truck without. and main reason i ended up with a 6.7 platinum my wife liked the automatic running boards and massaging seats. and also the dealership had a lariat on the lot....... for 72k. a year older with 40k more miles. and a couple base trim trucks with added options for 74-75k 3rd gen 6.7 powerstrokes. only thing i really hate about the new truck no cab lights. and i was going to get a 2010 F450.... i need a 1 ton but been scooting by with 3/4 tons. i like the lower axel ratio on the F450s. and the tighter turn radius on them. 30k for one of those.
So I have a 350hp short block, heads decked flow bench tested, turbo updated with a 5+5 wicked wheel, stage 1.5 full force injectors, stage 2 South bend clutch, glow shift gauges-egt, coolant and boost) Hydra tuner Power hungry performance tunes

what modes you got.bc i trying to think should upgraded my 2000 7.3 anymore i did put a new transmission with all heavy gears for towing.but two i been told 7.3 cant handle towing for long times.
You can run that truck stock and it will be slow and dependable for years to come towing commercially or for personal use or build it and pull everyday all day. I have never been told that
The truck will probably take a shit and die first. Running those old diesels in anything other than factory condition is the quickest way to kill them. When you tow way more then there rated for it kills em even faster. 20k is the max for the old 7.3s and thats with a gooseneck hooked up to a 5th wheel.
@@joshlower1 the 7.3 is overkill for the power and torque it produces. That’s why it’s so reliable. 6.0s not so much because they are more tuned up from factory and make more power. You see this a lot with reliable vehicles
I have a 2002 ford f350 dually I’m trying to pull a 3 car trailer that weighs 4200 pounds and I’m trying to pull 3 cars the towing max on google says 12,500 pounds I believe it’ll be over 13,200 depending on what type of vehicle could reach 14,000 pounds will it be good to over load it like that
Are you against running a monitor like a SCT Livewire or Edge? One screen and it’ll show you everything, read codes and clear codes and for a monitor only it’s not that spendy. Awesome video!
I can't believe you managed to tow 16k with a manual transmission. I feel bad for that poor clutch! The only reason you probably were able to make it was the extra ratios compared to the 4spd auto.
My only problem was the tires were not heavy enough. A blow out would suck going down the freeway, going slow in town or on the ranch what ever ya want to do. I run super heavy weight tires on all my 14,000# trailers and can max the trailers out well before the tires. Try some (st 235 85 16) tires in as heavy a ply as you can get. You will be much happier. People seem to not to understand that you have additional payload on the tow vehicle so if you are hauling 14,000# on a 14,000# trailer you subtract the weight of the trailer and add the pay load of the tow vehicle then you know approximately what your true payload is. With a single axle one ton and a 14,000# trailer you can haul about 12,500# load on the trailer, dual one ton about 14,000# and a 550/5500 will handle 16,000#. This is on a 20' 14,000# trailer at 3,500# dry weight. Your trailer will weigh more or less depending on the manufacturer or whether it is bumper pull or gooseneck and what options it has. I always error on the light side of things just for piece of mind. Thanks for the videos!!! P.S. All my figures were taken from a bumper pull trailer. A gooseneck does add some payload as the pin is over the axle and not on the bumper.
I'm still using the same straps and have over 75,000 miles only two have been replaced but that steel was rounded edges I use rubber floor mats cut into 4x4 pieces to protect my straps from sharp edges. I always loose my edge protectors so this is a lot cheaper. Plus this trip is 10 miles round trip no speeds above 55 so I don't use chains and binders but over the road of course I do. I have been hauling for over 10 years and not lost one load
Hey you seem like a good person I dun what you do I hauled stuff and I was sitting at a red-light and a tractor and trailer hit me in the rear end and totaled my truck and I have been in the hospital for 2 and a half years and I just got released a month ago and I was wondering if you knew anyone that would help me get a truck I have no money and no credit would you help me please I have four kids and I need to get things going again

ever look into the f650 added dash piece? Riffraff diesel had them. could give you a nice clean look for that brake controller and gauges and maybe some extra switches. (there are two versions of that dash piece, I can’t remember the difference between the manual and auto trans versions)
@@briano5421 You got me curious, but Riffraff no longer sells them. I'll me putting in a ZF6 when my 7.3 rebuild is done so I would need the manual version. Read some threads about people installing them and they look pretty good.

This is how you break a 7.3 folks. Buy suping it up to a level that that engine was never designed to handle and then asking it to pull weight it was never meant or designed to pull. Just get and f450bor 550 if your gonna haul loads like that this is insanity.
This guy must be one of those disgruntled semi drivers you referred to in your video, my stepdad has a 2015 6.7 powerstroke with just over a half a million miles and has been hauling fifth wheels and park model trailers with it for years. Stock F250 with CP4 replaced last year and about to get second turbo replacement, other than regular maintenance that is all.
You said get a 550? Didnt the 550 utilize the same powertrain… still a 7.3. The 250-350-450-550 rating was based off axles and suspension. So i mean what are you really getting at if you saying its a bad idea to build the engine up?
This is ridiculous. Get the proper tools for the job. Even a single axle day cab and flatbed pup would do much better than this and be much more safer for less money invested overall. You should have edge protection under those beat up worn out POS straps too to protect them from abrasion. If you want to play Motor Carrier you should learn how to do it safely.
I’m utterly offended that you are not using edge protectors. Them I’m really pissed that you don’t have any belly wraps on that loose stacked steel. Come on bud… do better!!

Looking to get some tunes by jelibuilt performance too
Nice video, love the truck.
Sorry if you’ve answered this already- is your egt probe post or pre turbo?
Thanks Boss
It's in the passengers side manifold I have run two of my 7.3s in this location. Thank you
Love these heavy haul videos. Keep it up. Real life doesn't always work out as planned. God gave you a brain to solve problems. If you had $30k to build a hotshot truck, what would you make? Or just buy the newest thing 30k gets u?
I would invest in a 6.7 powerstroke if I had to do all over again
You had me nervous riding with you through the video? Glad we didn’t see the DOT.🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for watching
Hell a RUclipsr in Ashland?! I gotta subscribe for that. Love the 5 speed 7.3 btw!
6 speed
Nice, glad to see another 7.3 in the hotshot game. Is this with stock turbo and injector?
It's a 350hp short block, head work flow bench tested, arp head studs, steel forged connecting rods, malhe ceramic coated pistons, full force stage 1.5 injectors, stock turbo with a 7+7 wicked wheel, k&n cold air with a 6637 air filter, hydra tuner with power hungry performance tunes, stage 1.5 south bend clutch.i know I'm forgetting something but I will try and find the build receipt and do a video on it
@@scottbaker4314 god damn that thing is built lol
@@scottbaker4314 dope, I’m no where near that. I’m still all stock, but looking to add the kc turbo towing kit with injector and hydra tuner. The sct tuner is kinda weak for every day towing. I don’t tow a lot currently but upgrading soon
danm love the truck talking bout a new 6.7 i just not to long ago picked up a 82k retail truck for 64k 2019 6.7 platinum had like 10k miles on it...... gonna sell it pretty soon and dump the extra cash in my 6.0 because i was appalled by the fuel economy my 6.0 a 2005 harley davidson edition gets 29 mpg highway unloaded and 20 loaded with about 9,000 lbs. new 6.7 gets 14.1 mpg highway and same load 13.5-13.9 it doesnt pull nearly as good i think. i got the 6 speed. i just dont like it because its alot of electronic crap nowadays you can't not get the truck without. and main reason i ended up with a 6.7 platinum my wife liked the automatic running boards and massaging seats. and also the dealership had a lariat on the lot....... for 72k. a year older with 40k more miles. and a couple base trim trucks with added options for 74-75k 3rd gen 6.7 powerstrokes. only thing i really hate about the new truck no cab lights. and i was going to get a 2010 F450.... i need a 1 ton but been scooting by with 3/4 tons. i like the lower axel ratio on the F450s. and the tighter turn radius on them. 30k for one of those.
honestly your comment about god and bettering life was cool.. you got my support buddy
15:46 agreed. I've fixed plenty things from RUclips comments, not just the vid itself.
Love seeing these 7.3l working. Love mine to death
What upgrades do you have on your truck
So I have a 350hp short block, heads decked flow bench tested, turbo updated with a 5+5 wicked wheel, stage 1.5 full force injectors, stage 2 South bend clutch, glow shift gauges-egt, coolant and boost) Hydra tuner Power hungry performance tunes
I HAVE A 7.3 TRUCK AND 6.0 I HAUL 36,000 6 YARDS OF PLASTER SAND IN 16 GOOSENECK DUMP TRAILER. HAULED 38K OF CONCRETE SOME HILLS WITH THE RIGHT TUNING ITS GOOD.
ever think about one of the f650 dash additions?
I'm not sure what your talking about
Well well well. This video somehow showed up in my feed, and of course I immediately hit subscribe! Glad to see you trying this out, and looking forward to more! Love ya dude! Your old childhood friend, Billy. ✌️
Hey Billy wow thankyou for the nice comment! Yes we go way back becareful out there
Great video
Thanks for watching! More heavy loads coming soon
Is that 29000 pounds scale ticket your total combined weight? Or is that just the trailer axles weight?
That's total gross
what modes you got.bc i trying to think should upgraded my 2000 7.3 anymore i did put a new transmission with all heavy gears for towing.but two i been told 7.3 cant handle towing for long times.
You can run that truck stock and it will be slow and dependable for years to come towing commercially or for personal use or build it and pull everyday all day. I have never been told that
won't last long seen it a million times kentucky state police pull you over say goodbye to the truck
Ya no shit. Thats like 2x what that truck is legally rated for. He'll be put OOS in a heartbeat.
The truck will probably take a shit and die first. Running those old diesels in anything other than factory condition is the quickest way to kill them. When you tow way more then there rated for it kills em even faster. 20k is the max for the old 7.3s and thats with a gooseneck hooked up to a 5th wheel.
My 450 is rated at 26k. Not sure about 350’s, pretty sure 450’s were highest rated for that era super duty- higher that the 550’s surprisingly
@@trevorcoleman4161 often times gcwr is lower in a 550 than 450 because payloads are higher and vice versa
@@joshlower1 the 7.3 is overkill for the power and torque it produces. That’s why it’s so reliable. 6.0s not so much because they are more tuned up from factory and make more power. You see this a lot with reliable vehicles
I have a 2002 ford f350 dually I’m trying to pull a 3 car trailer that weighs 4200 pounds and I’m trying to pull 3 cars the towing max on google says 12,500 pounds I believe it’ll be over 13,200 depending on what type of vehicle could reach 14,000 pounds will it be good to over load it like that
Pls respond
It's not going to hurt the truck but without any upgrades like load airbags, tuner exhaust and filter it will be slow going
@@scottbaker4314ok all I needed to know thank you
Is this Ashland ky?
Yes
I had a hard time getting use to the shifting pattern too
I totally agree it's so awkward compared to like normal standard truck or car. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year's
Hi, nice video. What tune are you running on the hydra during this video? I have a 2000 f550. Love these trucks
Thank you! I just run it on 50hp performance
Are you against running a monitor like a SCT Livewire or Edge? One screen and it’ll show you everything, read codes and clear codes and for a monitor only it’s not that spendy. Awesome video!
No I did in those 6.0s I had but I just have the glowshift gouges for egt and turbo
@@scottbaker4314 I must agree the pillar gauges kinda suck. If I had to buy/add gauges I'd do something like u did here
You have really low boost compared to me I can run 30 psi in my obs towing maybe you have a leak or bad tune?
Hell got to looking that’s Ashland ky lol I live in flatwoods just down the road
What cup holders do you have because mine are dog shit and are like an inch and a half deep
I guess they are from the XLT package, they aren't that good either
It's a lot of negative comments but I understand. You have to do what you can to try to make it were you trying to go.
dang that 7.3 sounds awesome
Yeah I agree. Doesn’t sound like a bucket of bolts rattling down
I can't believe you managed to tow 16k with a manual transmission. I feel bad for that poor clutch! The only reason you probably were able to make it was the extra ratios compared to the 4spd auto.
South Bend stage 2 it never fails, I can't say that for u joints.I had a custom driveshaft made out of schedule 80 made for it in Charleston wv
nice!!!! hope the day is going good !!!
Damn people trying to start fights over hauling loads for the same company? That’s crazy man
My only problem was the tires were not heavy enough.
14 ply ST Westlake radials great heavy haul tires
@@scottbaker4314 I am running provider fs835 235/85/16 14ply and another brand that is also fs835 style, they are much better than others I have run.

Wow brother !…DANGEROUS!!..no strap corners , they will eat that strap in 30 minutes !!…no binders ?
I'm still using the same straps and have over 75,000 miles only two have been replaced but that steel was rounded edges I use rubber floor mats cut into 4x4 pieces to protect my straps from sharp edges. I always loose my edge protectors so this is a lot cheaper. Plus this trip is 10 miles round trip no speeds above 55 so I don't use chains and binders but over the road of course I do. I have been hauling for over 10 years and not lost one load
Shocks are not bad. Watch the clips against the frame
I’m thinking about converting my Excursion to stick. I hate the auto, it needs a 5th gear
Look into gear vendors, that's my next purchase for this truck. I would rather have the 4r100 with a 6.0 cooler and a John wood valve body
Hold my beer, I’ve got this! Safety first
He’ll yeahh that’s right geting it what psi u ruing
Anywhere from 5lbs-25lbs I can get 35lbs if I'm empty and driving it like I stole it lol
Nice
Thanks for watching more heavy loads coming soon
keep that truck is what id say
Hey you seem like a good person I dun what you do I hauled stuff and I was sitting at a red-light and a tractor and trailer hit me in the rear end and totaled my truck and I have been in the hospital for 2 and a half years and I just got released a month ago and I was wondering if you knew anyone that would help me get a truck I have no money and no credit would you help me please I have four kids and I need to get things going again
Why didn't you sue the tractor trailer company? You should be a multi millionaire
Please refrain from fighting on company property 😂😂 sounds like a suggestion not a rule
God bless you bro . Jesus loves you as he does us all and though we all need to change our ways for the better as best we can it's day by day and you know what they say about starting your walk . 15k offer is pretty fair for a dealership
Believe it or not, we I’ve seen an 7.3 IDI non turbo haul a few thousand less than this, didn’t move as good as this 7.3.😂
So you recorded yourself using a handheld device while driving, hauling a dangerously overloaded trailer, and not using your turn signals? Then you decided to post it on RUclips? Really smart....
Thank you for watching
It's one thing to take stupid dangerous chances that could endanger other people, it another to put it on RUclips for everyone to see.
That trailer 16k rating mines 10k

ever look into the f650 added dash piece? Riffraff diesel had them. could give you a nice clean look for that brake controller and gauges and maybe some extra switches. (there are two versions of that dash piece, I can’t remember the difference between the manual and auto trans versions)
@@briano5421 You got me curious, but Riffraff no longer sells them. I'll me putting in a ZF6 when my 7.3 rebuild is done so I would need the manual version. Read some threads about people installing them and they look pretty good.

All those front end parts and you couldn't go ahead and put break pads in. Mad the day you get pulled over doing that shit your done for a while
🤣 not in this neck of the woods but thanks for the view *brake*
This is how you break a 7.3 folks. Buy suping it up to a level that that engine was never designed to handle and then asking it to pull weight it was never meant or designed to pull. Just get and f450bor 550 if your gonna haul loads like that this is insanity.
When it let's go I will buy a 6.7 and pull semi weights gonna be good footage!
@@scottbaker4314 yup and youlp fucking break it in no time as well. Just get a semi if you gonna pull that kinda weight. There made for it ya know.
@@scottbaker4314 Good footage indeed, Ford trucks will haul much more weight than what the stickers show if done properly.
100% correct
I bet I haul more loads than you do and safer than you do. I haven't had one failed load yet
I would get a 6.0 not a 6.7
