I quitted social media complete. What worked for me was, I deleted the apps for 1 week, and see if anyone noticed I wasn't active. And guess what, no one did, so why waste my valuable time? People don't care about my life, and I don't care about their life.

While RUclips, even though has some social features, is mainly about the delivery of video content, which has value for you to watch it. My self control isn't that great haha and I can't delete youtube from my phone. Then I finally got a new phone (my screen was messed up since forever lol) and the speaker didn't work. I also downloaded some apps "your hour" which restricts me from using my social media for over the limit I set and it automatically gets locked when that time is exceeded and another app "keep me out" I set a time limit depending on the about of time I want to dedicate to what I'm doing and then lock my phone, keep me out stops me from unlocking the phone until that time is effective.

Part of the problem with this addiction though is how much it's put up as a "socially acceptable" addiction, like how coffee and sugar can be or how smoking tobacco used be (before vaping was invented).
Most people either need it because without it there's people that learned they socialize better online than in-person, and/or sometimes most friends, family, and/or jobs can only be accessible through online. Not to mention that after the past couple of years, there's probably more people struggling with social media addiction now than a few years ago... 0_0

Social Media: Helping families/relationships/careers destroy themselves since 2000.... I find it a waste of time. I quit Facebook November 2012 and have not been anywhere near it since. Oh my; whatever will I do? How will I learn? Perhaps it could be the fact that I now read 20+ books a year... Hmm.... I don't have any of the other ones either. My career has only improved drastically and so has my family/personal life. Finally about 6 months ago after leaving a LinkedIn account dormant for about a year I deleted it too. Do I miss any of them? NOPE! Want to get a hold of me? We have this awesome invention called the telephone. Don't waste your time texting me unless it is to ask a quick question. People need more face-to-face and voice-to-voice reaction. That is what makes people happy. Quitting social media is the answer. With RUclips: use the learning aspects of it, there are many.

Social media can have a bad effect on your mental health but it can also be good! It depends on how you use it. On instagram I started unfollowing everyone that didn't bring anything interesting in my timeline and followed only motivational, creative accounts, accounts that made me learn things ou helped me grow as a person. (and some celebrities that i like). I unfriended everyone on snapchat and only kept a few people that I talk to on a daily basis. I was addicted to twitter also, I started to only follow accounts like on instagram. But I ended up deleting twitter and instagram apps because I got less and less interested. I only go on instagram a few times a week for like 5 minutes just to check. My biggest problem remains youtube because I love learning new things and I feel like i'm on here 24/7 lol.
Overral there are good but bad aspects for me but I'm still trying to work on them. I am so proud to be "social media free" now because it gave me so much anxiety and kinda lead me to depression. But at times being 18 w/o social media, having social anxiety and being in med school makes me feel so lonely..

I wasted so much time with my family and loved ones focusing on what my friends thought of me and it destroyed my mental health. I was exposed to social media at a young age and it destroyed me. My advice, do not get into multiple social media accounts at once, if you do only follow people you are super close with no one else. And please do not get your children into social media until they are out of high school. They will hate you for that but it will help them out trust me

I deleted the apps and just started using my browser instead. Much less addicting and its a lot easier to just stop, close the browser, and go to whatever else next you needed to do. The apps it’s a whole other beast to have quit using bc of the notifications and because you would have to constantly delete it, and reupload it, to see what people are doing and how your content is being seen. It’s insane and it’s sad that you even see people with millions of followers only get thousands or tens of thousands of likes. That means at least 10,000 / 1,000,000 people or only 1/100 actually care about what you post (or even to go on and say about you in general as a person). That’s a 1% rating that people like you. Even the same can be said for stories. If instagram showed how many people were seeing your stories, it would not be 1,000,000 followers. It’s more around that same range of the people who like your photos, so again probably about 1/100 people actually care to view them. But of course they’re not going to show that. Hope all this made sense.

Hi there! I just made a video with the (almost) same title! I was surprised you also talked about the topic. After watching the video, I realized what we argued in our own videos is different. I agree quitting social media is not the answer but neither is staying on it. the important thing i realized when i reduced my social media use , is my inability to sustain my attention, and withstand boredom. social media doesn't matter, i would find other ways to distract myself. a simple and striking example is when i cannot even eat food alone without looking at myphone, or brush my teeth in front of the mirror without wanting to do other things.. so my take on this is, social media is not the problem, but our addiction to distraction (although social media does worsen it). so i think the solution is to limit multitasking, and to try to focus on the one SINGLE THING you are doing at the present moment.
what do you think about this ? check out my video for more.

I agree that social media can damage your mental health if you let it. If you frequently use it to post or follow whatever, instead of only the things that bring you and others value. Social media in itself as he says is not bad. You just gotta know how to use it right and what its truly for. Doing the wrong thing on it can lead to worse mental issues.
Having experienced worse of it at times, I deleted some of it too and kept others that i think add the most value. Like my facebook page, I think that adds value to my life because it allows me to stay in touch with close friends and family I meet in real life, but I can't look at the highlight reels constantly, i can't and shouldn't start comparing myself to their lives - and they shouldn't hear about me constantly either. So I refuse to play on it- only using it sparingly. And i keep linkedin for business purposes but I rarely play on that either except for if someone were to message me, to search job postings, or I got a job.
If one mental dumps then you open yourself up to wrong kind of influencers, start making poor decisions, and it erodes your sense of self and values.
But that's why one has to treat your social media kind of like a business; cause in a way it kind of is. Your selling yourself on it: the hobbies you like, your interests, your opinions, even your feelings in hopes to find others that can relate. You can't treat it as a dump for every thought that comes in your head. You want to show the best side of yourself as much possible. Only post what is relevant and good for others as much as yourself. You can joke around and get to know people yes, but one needs to ask oneself: "Will others like what I'm doing?" "Why am I doing this?" "Who is this for?" Always remember whether they think so or not ones posts are being indexed and sold by 3rd parties, meme lords, and also fortune 500 companies, others are seeing your posts- their not private (though some have private features to them) and you wouldn't want your personal mental issues or emotional issues to be the front page news would you? Then you have to keep some of it in the dark. And seek help privately. If you don't - then your just opening yourself up for more mental and emotional issues cause the meme lords/news reels: love drama and if you give them an inch they will go a mile and all your friends and family will see you differently. I know one post seems innocent but its that one post that means the most and can be the most condemning.

I just started 2 nights ago deleting everything and at times it’s hard cause I find myself just thinking about Facebook mainly smh. I was glued to Facebook Instagram has never been a addictive app to me but I found myself starting to get a little carried away. My main problem was always Facebook but I ended up taking both apps off my phone. I actually just order myself a book today on amazon that’s delivering tomorrow. I also wrote a story about my depression and how I fell into depression. As well I’m going to find my usb and get back to correcting this story I started typing in high school when I was really into reading books. Gosh I never thought i can read so much but after high school I moved to Mississippi I still read but it slowly decreased now I felt like I completely lost myself. I use to read draw and write go for walks but social media has taking a toll onto me over the past 5 years it has really became bad.

Facebook has been a distraction for me. I hardly use it now, specially when exams are around the corner. On the other hand, my addiction to r/medicalschool on reddit helped me (now it's a meme room-sadly) to find resources, plan schedules and even to seek answers for questions I had. Anyways, "Addiction" or a strong desire to visit social media is a problem - a student should't have.

I deleted a lot of my social media apps because I didn't like the fact that when I followed or added the people I knew but didn't fully know they didn't talk to me in rea life. that made me angry and sad. It was also kind of my fault because I am not good at talking to people I barely know. I'm really glad I deleted these apps because I feel a lot happier and I don't get angry a lot anymore.

Actually if you didn't know or already know you can offload applications instead of deleting them. However, to do this the smart way are making sure you log out of social media because sometimes it lets you log back in after recovering your app by installing them again.

I stopped using instagram and facebook about 2 months ago because I wanted to spend more time doing valuable things, guess what? I feel way better. If someday I'll have to use it for connecting with people I really know, then I might go back, but right now there are other forms of virtual contacting with people that allows me to use my time more intentionally. It has been great.

I really appreciate the practical tips you gave! I’ve cut down my morning Social use by adding morning pages journaling to my routine. It helps to check in why am I going on social? It might also work better for me to get on when I know I have an amount of time I can use it start to finish. Being interrupted while on makes the time even longer for me

I personally believe people should quit 99% of social media apps entirely if:
    a. the app is not absolutely necessary for you to communicate with someone.
    b. you don't work in a job related to that social media.
    c. the content brought up on that certain social media isn't educational or helpful.
That being said, I still believe social media is a great tool but ONLY when used right. It's a double edged sword, when it's used sparingly, it's a toolbox for your life, when it's used obsessively, it's just a weight dragging you down.

I was addicted to Instagram (not to twitter or Facebook because I don't have those). I spent a lot of time in there instead of studying, so before my exams I deleted it at my dad's recommendation. I missed it a lot, and I tried to fill the void the time out of Instagram created with RUclips, for example, and ended up wasting even more time. Over the holidays I downloaded it again, and after that, I put on the new Instagram feature to control my daily usage. First I put it at a maximum of 35 minutes per day (a little but over what I hear is the maximum amount recommended), but shortly after I went down to 25 a day. Most days I don't even spend all that time in there, and I intend to limit my usage more and more, slowly. Now I don't feel the need to be all the time on Instagram, but when I completely deleted it, I did. So, personally, I agree that it's better to control than to delete, at least for the time being. Maybe, eventually, I won't even feel the need to be in Instagram at all, and deleting the app won't cause the "distress" it has caused me to do that before

The suitable approach differs from person to person. Some people have enough going on in their life that they can take a day off and learn to cut back and succeed. For others this is not a viable long term solution. If a heroin addict told you that he was going to take a day off heroin and then cut down a bit, you might reasonably feel sceptical about this being a sufficient remedy.

Thanks for this vid. The tip about turning off notifications from social media apps got me thinking. Since I started using social media apps (Fb, IG, Twitter), I have never allowed notifications at all. Yet, I am constantly addicted to them (even without notifications compelling me). My friends, however, have notifications fully turned on (even like notifications on IG as you mentioned). For some reason they are way less addicted and can control their usage better.
So: is this just to do with me having lesser willpower? And if so, what exactly influences this willpower? You mentioned about dopamine. Could this be due to a difference in the concentration of dopamine receptors that we have?

I was never addicted to the social media platform to begin with because first I was kinda prohibited from them when I first got my phone and secondly, they're kinda boring for me. I mean now I do have Instagram and Twitter and I was addicted to Instagram at one point but it only lasted like a week or so bc I just hated how much time I can waste in that app.
But for *RUclips,* yeah that was where my addiction is and still is. I got addicted to my phone and RUclips the moment I got unlimited data. And I hate how I'm wasting time, precious time where I can be studying or finishing my art. And I feel energize when I want to do more stuff at school but when I get home, I get on my phone and waste hours away. I hate it. I tried not going on RUclips for a while and that was the worst but I'm going to try this because last year of high school, I want to end strong and I don't want this to distracted me in college. Thank you for the advice.

As someone who regularly checks his phone I find just turning the phone completely off helps significantly! However a question for Dr.Jubbal How would you advise students to regulate their social media consumption ? The programs and apps suggested are great in stopping you from going on the app, but how do we integrate into a balanced lifestyle where social media isnt something we constantly check all the time regardless of if we are working or not but as a tool? Like do you advise having a designated daily set time ? thanks great vid as always

I think you answered your own question. Probably writing out a schedule of what you do in the day even the little things such as eating can help you see where you could fit in social media use.

This is much simpler than that. Sure, you can challenge yourself to control the use of social media. But it's simpler to not use them at all. The same goes with eating carbs, drinking alcohol, etc. Much simpler to avoid detrimental behaviour than trying to control it.

Wow I have so much things to say.
So, I’m addicted to social media specifically RUclips. I deleted all the aps from my phone at the end of December (Instagram, Twitter, RUclips, Snapchat and I never had Facebook). But obviously an addicted person always finds a way and so did I. Over Google I went to RUclips page and that’s how I watched all videos. For some weird reason I was already logged in so I could comment, like and dislike but I couldn’t reply or watch videos and read comments at the same time. I don’t get any notifications because it’s not an app. I tried setting my phone on screen time and the only thing I do is press Ignore and than Remaind me in 15 minutes. After those 15 minutes I do the same thing. Sometimes I end up watching the stupidest videos because I just want something to distract me from my school work and that’s the way it helps me the most. But what ends up happening is that I stay for waaaayy to long and I don’t do the things I planed to do and than I’m disappointed at myself. I tried putting it as far away from me as possible but it doesn’t work because I need it for my school work. So yeah, if anybody knows any other way I’d very much like to know.

legit I keep going on Snapchat for every second logging in to see if anyone has replied, my mum said to take a break from Snapchat for a month and you might feel better. Honestly did not believe her, so she hid my phone ( iPhone 7 plus) and she and my dad have a Nokia ( lol), she told me she would give it back after a month so I did some artwork and school study for a month and youtube kept me from boredom. Got my phone legit no friends texting me to see if I'm okay and where I've disappeared so I've realised there is no point to stay for these people so I'm of it for good and I feel awesome. I would recommend it life-changing!!!
until they saw me in town and wanted to smack me
