      Thank you so much for your comment, it is truly appreciated! There is so much to learn about this subject and all the different LM's that were used. I did my best to get all the details as accurate as I could. An example would be the Landing Point Designator or LPD. My research showed that in the Apollo 11 LM, it was only in the left window as view from the inside. I have seen other builds showing it in both windows. I don't know for certain if I got that right or not. I spent a lot of time on various modifications and, based on your comments, I think it was time well spent. Once again I thank you for your comment and for watching this video. Best wishes!

    Excellent work sir! The detail and workmanship make it look like a 1/32 scale not a dinky 1/48. I just picked up one of these kits and now I have a new standard to try and meet LOL.

      Thank you for watching this video and for leaving a comment. I wanted to detail this kit to make it look less "plain jane". I could not find any photo etch that was available for helping to add details, so I decided to scratch build what I could. If I could change anything, I would utilize more of the candy wrapper foil instead of using gold paint. I also would not use that kit supplied base. I think I should have made a completely new base. But, it is what it is. I don't know if I mentioned this in the video but the ascent stage is held to the descent stage with magnets. Thanks again for your comments and best wishes!

      Thank you for watching the video and leaving a comment. As I mentioned in the video, do your research. I got mixed up at times building this model. At first glance, all the LM's look the same but there are differences. My biggest issue was the color of the ascent stage, it is not pure white. I ended up with a mix of white with a little gray and a touch of green to get the color that "looked" right to me. I wish you the best of luck on your builds. In my collection there are a lot of articles from Soviet newspapers of that time about all the flights under the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, very detailed from launch to landing. By the way, I want to say that despite the Cold war between the Soviet Union and the United States and the moon race, which we lost, all articles are written respectfully, however, this applies to all NASA programs. My video on my channel is dedicated to Apollo 11. In particular, it contains telegrams from the Soviet government, the USSR Academy of Sciences and all Soviet cosmonauts addressed to US President Nixon, the leadership of NASA and the Apollo 11 astronauts with their outstanding and successful flight to the Moon. Fantastic Job! Damn thing looks real! ;) LOL. and speaking of real, did you know that on the Real LEM (also LM), the gold and silver foil was not foil at all... but actually Mylar (plastic). Yes it had metal qualities to it because the gold color was real gold-plated Mylar, and the silver was Nickel plated Mylar. Anyway, you replicated that Mylar beautifully. Nice Job!

    • @modelsbymonte2431
      @modelsbymonte2431  8 месяцев назад

      I did a lot of research on the LEM before and during the build. The gold material was something called Kapton and Mylar. I think a combination of both materials were used, being plated as you mentioned. It was also called MLI if memory serves. One of the hardest part of this build was getting the color of the ascent stage. It was not white and not silver. I ended up with a mix what seemed right to me as best as I could match color photos. I learned a lot during this build and I have another kit waiting to be built that I hope to improve on. That will be a much later project. Thank you for your comment, I sincerely appreciate it. @modelsbymonte2431  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you so much for your comment, it is highly appreciated. I did my best to attempt to duplicate what was in the PE kit. I mainly just drilled out areas that needed to be opened and scratch built others like the antennas etc. If I had it to do all over again I would spend more time on the foil coverings and that over-sized looking ladder. The model did get 1st place in the actual spacecraft category in the local IPMS meet. I seem to remember, a long time ago, there was a kit out that had folding legs. However, I don't remember the manufacturer or the scale. Thank you again for your comment and for watching the video. Best wishes!

    • @myles_bennett77
      @myles_bennett77 5 месяцев назад

      I can definitely see this taking first at IPMS. Another question: Did you use regular cement for attaching the foil? I am thinking of using Micro Liquitape or maybe BMF adhesive, but do you think actually melting the styrene with cement is more secure? It might help with texture too. What did you use? Thanks

    • @modelsbymonte2431
      @modelsbymonte2431  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@myles_bennett77 I used several different methods to attach the foil. For the aluminum foil, I used white glue to hold the foil. The gold on the main body is held by the adhesive on the film with the sharp corners secured with a drop on very thin super glue. I also added a drop of white glue in various areas that looked like they would eventually peel back. I really had no method to the application, just applying white glue in areas that I thought would cause trouble and thin super glue where I thought it would be needed, such as sharp bends. I know that this is not a very good answer to your question. I like your idea on using liquid cement to soften the plastic. I would be concerned with the time that technique would allow for repositioning if needed. Great Idea though. Thank you for reaching out with your question, it has got me thinking that your method might be the way to go. Please let me know what you end up using and your results. Best wishes and please keep me posted on your build. Thanks!

    • @myles_bennett77
      @myles_bennett77 5 месяцев назад

      @@modelsbymonte2431 No, that’s a perfect answer. I actually just now did a test run on two of the landing gear. On one I used liquid cement and the other I just used the adhesive back. Both techniques worked fine and once I burnish it down I feel like it will be reasonably secure. I was really surprised how well the adhesive worked on the foil, but I bet you’re right and it will loosen with time. I like your idea of reenforcing areas that might be prone to peel. The idea of using just cement I’m not sure about, because, as you know, it’s designed to weld together like-materials. I think it might have worked despite the liquid cement, not because of it. I ordered some Micro-scale Metal Foil adhesive, and I’m thinking that will work really well. That’s probably the way I’ll foil the bigger portions, depending on how experiments on smaller parts go. Thanks again for the answer, and I’ll definitely let you know how the Microscale works.

    Also I was thinking, if you haven’t reworked the flag yet. I would use something like a paper clip to hold the top edge of the flag straight (there was a horizontal rod holding up the real flag which was made on a foil base not a fabric. Then add more creases to match the Apollo photos.
