I was just graduated from High School, a Physics major and amateur Astronomy buff. " Mars by 1985" they cried, and I thought I was just the right age for that mission..,,now I'm nearly 70 and still waiting. We haven't lost the technology, we lost the will to go. The first man on Mars will be Chinese.

I love that you honored this wonderful achievement and the 50th anniversary with this talented model build. My Father worked on the Apollo 11 program and I am also an Electrical Engineer. I Remember this event as a child. It was amazing and I was sure we’d have flying cars and robots (at home) by this time in my life. Oh well :)
What’s interesting is that 7miles/sec in space is possible because there is no atmosphere and therefore resistance is minimized allowing non-aero dynamic objects to travel at such speeds. I agree that we need to move forward with more space exploration and companies like SpaceX are helping to move things in this direction.
Your accent is pleasing so don’t worry about pronunciation.
Thank you for such a wonderful posting and showing your beautiful model!
    Kind Regards,
    Pat

Adam Savage mentioned in his Lego Lunar lander build video that at ILM they tested a bunch of different materials for a film to see what most resembled the foil NASA used, and it turned out what matched it exactly was the gold wrappers from Rolo Choclates. They bought a ton of them and flattened out the wrappers to use on their models in the film!

Fantastic Build Plasmo! From the Wright brothers' first heavier than air flight at kitty hawk in 1903, to the moon landing in 1969; its amazing how far flight had come in the space of 66 YEARS! In theory a person aged 75 years old in 1969 would have memories of early days flight in their youth. And in their senior years be alive to see on T.V Neil Armstrong taking his first step on another world...................can one even imagine how they would have felt seeing how far humanity had come in the space of their life times?

Great build as usual! Regarding the broader discussion at the end of the video, I think the biggest impediments to space exploration are political will and who pays for it. Those same factors plagued early NASA back then as they do now. The development of all the programs and tech leading into Apollo was done from post WWII through the mid-sixties. With social unrest, racial problems, Vietnam, etc, etc all pulling at the nation, many people leading didn't want to spend the money then, just as there's questions on spending the money now. I hope future missions and programs shift entirely to the private sector, unhindered by whatever leaders or administrators impose.

Another well done model and your handling of the gold mylar was exceptional, but a small critique. Their would be no weathering or dust on the LM. It was used only once. When the landing was occurring they saw something never experienced there was no dust kicked up. The vacuum of space won't suspend dust or dirt(watch the film on the landing you'll see it) the astronauts really got dirty around the boot and gloves. The later missions the suits really got filthy from the hours on the surface. A small note, a 1/48 scale model of the LM could be had for one cent back in the day (1970) it was a mail order and I built one myself. It could be separated and the legs folded like the real one. But again well done

Great job! I was a kid in the 1st grade and my mom kept us out of school to watch this flight. And for hours you could see the con trail up into space. It was so cool.

    I just found this video.
This Yankee gives you plenty of respect for your loving attention to detail of this subject.
When I built the earliest version of this kit in the 1960s I used actual cigarette ash to cover the base because I had read that the astronauts said that's what the Moon's surface looked like.
I was annoyed that the only Soviet space model available was the Sputnik, so I resorted to scratchbuilding a Vostok capsule.
You're right in that we have no excuse not going back to space... except politics. When will we outgrow that?

Hey David! You built only once a tank hunter which was Nashorn ,which was over two years ago. So i guess you should build another one. You can go for Su-100 or Stug-III or something. It depends on you. So if you read this comment please think of this idea.

I watched the whole thing on TV. in August 1969. I was 7 years-old. I even remember watching Star Trek in the 1960 s and 1970 s. One of the episodes I remember best is Tomorrow Is Yesterday when an F-104 is scrambled to intercept the Enterprise that has accidentally traversed time after escaping from a black hole. I made had a model of the Enterprise and a model Starfighter chasing it hanging in my room for a long time. Maybe this would make a cool diorama for you to consider.

You've done an superb job of building this! Even more impressive is that it's at 1/72 scale- I've just completed the Revell 1/48 Eagle & Columbia kit and that was fiddly enough, so you have my respect.

I did a couple of these years ago and i used fake gold foil and contact cement (thinned out and sprayed over the structure where needed). It was a PITA to work around the foil, but it came out incredibly realistic.

I think the point you made about Russian Roulette really brings home just how much of a risk the mission to the moon was. Russian Roulette gives you a less than 17% chance of disaster, but 50% for the moon mission is 3 times times more likely, and I'm assuming that 99.9999......% of people wouldn't dream of engaging in Russian Roulette. It really puts things into perspective; those astronauts were practically on a suicide mission; they made a huge sacrifice for this achievement. I respected them before, but now my respect has increased.

And Good luck Mr. Gorsky. :D :D

@plasmo did you know there were actually THREE speeches: one for success, one for the death of the astronauts, and one in case Armstrong and Aldrin had been stranded on the moon and Collins returned home. There was a chance the LM Ascent Module engine wouldn't fire.
