Can I ask if you miss onboard music? For slower runs, wearing a phone on my arm is no problem, I actually prefer the spoken word podcasts for long runs, but I need music for interval and quicker runs, where wearing a phone is impracticable. The 2x literally has everything else I'd want in a watch, come on Garmin, it has audio prompts why not music? The torch would be so handy, when an older dog needs to go out at 3am.

I bought Instinct 1 Solar three years ago after watching your videos. Although I’m not a professional fitness guy like you, your videos have inspired me to get off my fat @$$ and move more. Fast forward to 2023, I’ve shed about 10kg, feel better, and quit smoking.
Garmin Instinct has definitely been agreat help, as I’ve enjoyed looking at the stats, and I was saving up to get the Fenix 7, but this video convinced me to upgrade to an Instinct 2x instead.

How is the battery life on your Instinct 1 Solar? Or how was it? Did it still last couple of weeks in between charges? I used to have the original Garmin Instinct (non-solar). Looking to get the 2X for my bday next month :)

I have both of these watches too... nice purchase choices, Des! There are so, so, so many great features about the Instinct 2X Solar. Here are the differences I am seeing
    1. The screen & display Fēnix 7X sapphire solar - has the sapphire screen, is in color, but the Instinct 2X Solar is easier to read outdoors and indoors.
    2. Solar Charging - Yes, the Instinct 2X Solar charges more quickly than the Fēnix 7X sapphire solar.
    3. Style & Design - Fēnix 7X looks better when wearing a suit
    4. Band & Straps - Fēnix 7X has quick-release bands
    5. Design, look, and feel? Fēnix 7X looks better with 3rd party bands
    6. Weight - Fēnix 7X is way heavier to wear for running. When I do my walking, cycling, and other workouts, nah, I don't notice it much at all.
    7. Maps, yes, Fēnix 7X wins again for the Instinct 2X just uses the breadcrumb trails from the year 1997. The topo maps are pretty cool and come in more useful than you could imagine. There is also the “Around Me” feature to find landmarks, businesses, hospitals, and more… And yes, there are turn-by-turn directions as well.
    8. Fēnix 7X lays down flat
    9. Fēnix 7X still requires a reboot to view how much battery life increased after solar charging whereas the Instinct 2X solar displays the increase in battery life seconds after the fact.
    10. Both watches fail to log the LUX hours via solar charging in the app or on the Garmin Connect website. Garmin needs to quickly create a "Solar Report" soon.
i.e. while wearing your solar watch this week your battery life increased by 17% over the past seven days and you collected 1,500 Lx hours in the sun.
    11. Goal animations for both the Fēnix 7X and the Instinct series block chunks! I miss the goal animation from my 45mm Darth Vadar (Garmin vívoactive 4), oh yeah, both the Garmin Star Wars & Marvel special edition watches came with fantastic goal animations. I simply do not understand why the more expensive watches made by Garmin are boring when it comes to reaching human goals.
    12. Music - Fēnix 7 wins for it allows downloading music playlists directly to your watch. The Instinct 2X only allows music controls with a paired smartphone to carry during the workouts.
    13. GPS Satellites - okay, sure, the Instinct 2X has more accurate GPS unless you splurged for the Garmin Fēnix 7X sapphire solar and they are the same.
    14. Sensors - they both rock the Sensor 4.0 by Garmin to heart-rate, SP02, breathing, and more
    15. Workouts - Fēnix 7X has more to choose from.

Purchased the Instinct 2X yesterday. Reasons why I chose it: 1) Only occasionally need a sports watch. 2) Almost always need a map of where I have been. 3) That map does not need to be very accurate. Just need to know approximate location every 10-15 minutes (similar to expedition mode). Hoping Strava syncing works for this (bit of a gamble). 4) Will almost always have a cell phone on me as well (for fullscreen maps). 5) Anticipate long battery life, given my use case. Hope it will essentially be infinite given the amount of time spent outdoors.

@@tvwtben795, I am very satisfied. It exceeded my expectations in almost every category. Battery life measured in weeks. Loads of features. Slick mapping and sharing options. All is not perfect, of course. I did swap out the band. The stock band is not great, especially when using a computer frequently. I found a nylon strap from China and it is much more comfortable. I can get 3+ weeks of use (including regular activity tracking) with 2 hours of charging time. Incredible. I haven't taken it off my wrist for 6 months now, and still going strong. After the first week with the Epix the "novelty" if you will of the beautiful color screen wore off and I realized I don't want to spend that much time looking at my watch. Also, if I wasn't a father I'd be happy to leave my phone behind and wear the Epix out on the trail. But while already carrying my phone I'd rather use maps on that instead of on the watch. So the Epix Pro is just extra weight and a thing to scratch the paint on my car with.

And all i do is track sleep, heartrate, steps, weather and just keep a accurate time whenever i change timezone and not be connected to my phone for more than 3 days. (drives me nuts that i have to keep a bluetooth connection on the 4th day just to sync time)
I love the touch screen but i rarely use the touchscreen when i have gloves on when hiking and the use of breadcrumb navigation is already a god-sent tool.

But in such circumstances (longer hikes, backpacking tours etc.)i would always have my cellphone and/or Garmin handheld GPS with me. It's at least 400-500 Euros extra weight on my budget... Instinct has a total different design goal. Its low energy consuption! Hence no amoled display but a MIP LCD. With this comes all the drawbacks: no colors, low refresh rate, low resolution, touch makes no sense on a MIP. Because of this Maps can not be implemented, like other things that are graphic or need animation. BUT for this you get unbeatable battery life. For me this is a tough solar gshock with great features and not traditional smartwatch like AW or galaxy watch. I love the instinct, exactly what i was looking for for outdoor use, and couldnt find at casio.

I really like my first generation instinct and I’ve worn pretty close to every single minute since I first got it. I’ve worn it everywhere and it’s given me more insight to my overall health than I would have ever expected. On that note I also know at some point this first generation instinct isn’t going to last forever. So of course I’ve looked at what I’d be willing to replace this watch with when that time come. If I was going to buy a watch to replace this one I have it would more than likely be the second generation instinct but this time with solar. So it would be the instinct 2X with solar that for now looks like it’s the replacement I’d purchase that is if I was replacing a watch that I wear TO WORK. If I wasn’t wearing my watch to work doing what I’m currently doing for a living if would be the Fenix 7 pro x with solar and a coin toss if I’d spend the extra for the sapphire. I like them both but if there individual reasons. So work watch, instinct 2X solar. No a work watch, Fenix 7 x pro solar sapphire. Thanks for the comparison. Just the video I was looking for to confirm my thoughts. Keep it going.

I had an Instinct 2 solar tactical, Fenix 7x and bought the 2X. I sold the Fenix and I2ST, and picked up a 2nd Instinct 2x Tactical. This 2x is everything I need. The size makes a pretty substantial difference in screen as well as solar power - but I cannot tell the difference in size between the regular instinct 2 and 2X on wrist. When you put a fenix on, you can feel the weight difference pretty clearly. You feel it much more on your wrist. But for whatever reason...probably the way the Instinct series wraps around your wrist, coupled with lighter weight - it doesnt feel like a typical "X" garmin. If youre concerned about the size, Id at least try one one. If youre thinking of the difference being similar to the 7 and 7X, it just doesnt feel that way on wrist.

    • @DesFit

What do you use the maps for? Is it full navigation like Google maps?

    • @BM-wc6bt
      @BM-wc6bt 5 месяцев назад

@@radiantveggies9348so the standard Topo maps it comes with has roads and trails (you can get other overlay maps as well for specific purposes like specific parks or outdoor areas with reference points)
You can tap on a spot and it will kind of guide you there, sort of like Google Maps navigation.
But what I originally had was the satellite imaging maps (I believe it’s like $50 a year for a subscription from Garmin) which I used for work, being a police officer with some rural areas that have little to no cell phone service at times, if I needed to navigate to a location or back from where I was at, the Fenix maps still worked when I didn’t have cell service so I could easily look at it and reference where I was or was going. I have since stopped the satellite image subscription and just use the topo maps since it has roads marked on it.
Compared to the Instinct which only has breadcrumb mapping, so you can’t get on and just look at the map and area around you. I had to set up specific locations that I could get the watch to navigate me to and with that it really just gives me a direction to travel towards to get me there.
All in all, the Fenix map function is useful if you’re out of cell service but need to quick reference where you are or where something is in relation to you (road, intersection or known landmark) unless you get the satellite image sub. Even at that just having the ability to pull up a map anywhere you go whether you have cell service or not is very useful. I can recall one time driving through an area with no cell service, I set my phone up on the maps app to see if it would load, meanwhile I had my Fenix on mapping and drove around navigating the roads and trails with just the watch, my phone never even loaded during that whole time. About 30 minutes later I hit cell service and went back to my phone but for the time being before I was solely using my watch to navigate as I drove.
In recent times I switched back to my Instinct being in a more suburban area, when I’m put in the more rural areas I will usually wear my Fenix as a back up if I need to navigate around without cell service or in case I get lost.
I think the mapping function is useful but only in specific circumstances, if you do a lot of outdoors stuff in areas with little cell service, it’s great. In areas where your phone is still working, unless you’re spending hours navigating, your phone will probably serve you better.

I tested it on my right hand and I recieved the same burnings, so I turned the hr sensor off and I am waiting for my steel strap from China to see if I can wear it at all. One point to mention with regards to bands. If you attach a quick-fit band to Instinct (I own Gen 1 Solar), it will make a weird sound when vibrating. Cheap. So I do not advise you to replace the stock band with a quick-fit one.

    • @wintrymix
      @wintrymix Год назад +1

Yes! That was my experience as well but whenever I mention it online, no one agrees. I thought I was losing my mind, lol. Or maybe you and I are just more sensitive to it? Another reason to avoid the quick fit is the risk of losing the watch, since the clasp can open on impact. And it's just not comfortable, IMO. I use elastic bands without any adapters, just slip my pins right through the band. One more benefit of the Instinct - Fenix pins are not removable.

Excellent review. But one I noticed no reviewer references is the different watch face. Main purpose of a watch is to tell time and the Instinct has an unmovable round window in the upper right corner that blocks any kind of an analog display. That's kind of a deal breaker for me since I prefer looking at hour, minute, second analog display. The other thing not mentioned by all reviewers is if the watch display is "always on". And whether that kills battery life. I hate having to depend on rotating my wrist to just tell time. Which many times doesn't work right. Thanks.
