    Fenix 6 Deal: amzn.to/3ss4vXe (comes and goes)
    I’m going to dive into all the differences between the Fenix 7 and its mini-me, the Instinct 2. Comparisons have long been drawn between the two, and whether or not the Instinct was essentially a Fenix-lite. And in many ways, it is. Whereas in others, it’s clearly not. However, never has the line been closer than now with the Instinct 2, which swallows up the vast majority of the Fenix 6-era sports and fitness features, will stop short of adding newer Fenix 7-era features, or, adding a fancier display.
    Of course, in any comparison like this, one has to acknowledge the obvious: The Fenix 7 (base) is twice the price of the Instinct 2 (base). The Fenix 7 series starts at $699, whereas the Instinct 2 series starts at $349. Still, for many people, either device would work well. And I hope to arm you with the information you need to see which extra features you prefer, or decide to skip on.
    Now as always, this video is based on real-world long-term usage of both devices. And more notably, both devices literally side by side on long adventures and workouts. So I can dive into some of the interesting nuances between them that aren’t obvious…unless you’re 6-hours into a hike with changing weather conditions requiring a route change.

    I literally just traded in my Fenix7 for an instinct 2. The fenix is way too much of a smartwatch for me. The instinct is simple, doesn’t look like a “smart watch” and is a quarter of the price. I’m never looking back. Great review!

    • @pk3

      How is it quarter of the price. Or may be it is where you live? Base instinct 2 is 350 USD and base Fenix 7 is 700 USD.

    Another informative and useful video. Thank you! There is one painfully obvious difference between the Instinct and other Garmin watches that I don't believe you covered at all. Readability. Garmin's monochrome screens have more contrast and are far easier to read than the color MIP screens. That difference was very evident in the screen shots you shared during this video. This issue is even more severe for Garmin's bike computers. With a watch it is pretty easy to change the angle of view to improve contrast. But that is simply not possible with bike computers. I can't tell you how many times I have cursed my Edge 830 because I could not see the display well enough to make out what it was telling me. Here again, the Edge 130 is better. I owned the Edge 130 for a while before upgrading the 830. If I complain to Garmin they will ignore me. But if you point out this shortcoming, they will listen to you. The answer, at least for the bike computers, is to offer each model in color and monochrome versions, and let the user decide which feature is more important. For me, I'll take readability over muted colors any day.

    I came close to buying a Fenix 6 but went for an upgrade from my Instinct Solar to an Instinct Solar 2. In the end, it was the fact that 6 years is probably the realistic upper end for device support from Garmin and that the F6 is already 3 yrs old which pushed me in the IS2 direction. Hard decision though. None of the options are bad at all. Garmin are on top form at the moment. My 2 yr old Instinct Solar is like new. The fibreglass case and silicone strap are so tough. Also, no noticeable sign of even minor battery degradation.

    Thanks for the comparison on these two. I'm considering upgrading my old Instinct and this was helpful. I do like the maps option on the Fenix but I'm not sure it is worth the extra cash for me. I currently use the Explore app when I need to see a topo view since the breadcrumb on the Instinct isn't very helpful for me. The Fenix does have some neat features, but the Instinct 2 solar might be the better value for my needs. Thanks again for your videos, you helped me decide on my original Instinct years ago.

    I used your videos to make a purchasing decision. I ultimately went with the Instinct 2 Solar for the battery life as a main feature, along with your tests showing that (generally) the GPS and altimeter are pretty close. To me, the extra money wasn't worth the things I wasn't going to use the watch for. Primarily for mountain biking and backpacking - and I've gone 38 years without any digital help at all as far as navigation so just a simple no-maps but coordinate/direction is totally fine. And, the instinct 2 is on sale as of this comment whereas the fenix 7 is not so the price gap is just that much greater. Thanks for your info on the watches!

      I'm thinking the same, new to the mountains/hiking/etc. but I always download a map on my phone via Alltrails Pro (have an old beat up Android that I use when I go out) and don't think I'd need the detailed map on the Fenix since I'd (almost) always have the map available on my phone. That should be more than enough when going out right? Just can't think of a scenario where I'd need a detailed map on my watch, even when doing the tall mountains here in Utah. Most of the trails seem to be well-defined and clear when I'm on them

    I love my Fenix 6 but if I was choosing between these two I’d go Instinct, no doubt at all. I’m not a fan of touchscreens on watches (so I’d be paying for a feature I’d turn off on the F7), colour is nice but not essential and as I’m primarily a cyclist these days a lot of the missing features are covered by my bike computer anyway. I’d mainly be sad about the lack of on device music for the small amount of running I do but it’s hard to argue with that gaping chasm between the prices.

    Hi! I own a Fenix 5X Sapphire (not plus) bought 3 years ago for less than 400$. I am super happy with it and the Sapphire screen is insane (went climbing with my watch and the screen is still smooth).
    Issue is: I am mainly missing 2 features. Pacepro and what I assume is a recent enough Bluetooth to be compatible with the Woo kitesurfing app (not the kitesurf sport profile that the surf edition and 7 has)
    I am struggling to pick my new watch. Buying a cheaper Instict 2 for new features and keep my 5X for daily wear or realize that I really like the garmin watch and go all in on the 7 solar sapphire to get all the additional features (offline music, better GPS and HR). What would you recommend?

I also prefer the instinct 2 monochrome display as it has more contrast that you can read easier in sunlight. All I really need is a readable display for speed, distance, time, save track and upload to Strava, with charging that doesn't use the Garmin cables, so 99% of features won't get used. I long for my old 910XT clip on charger, but that was stolen.

    I bought an Instinct 1 last year (on your excellent reviews advice!) and would be curious about a comparison of the durability of these two watches? Part of the draw of the instinct line for me is how bomb proof they are, and thats important when your out hiking and crashing through the back country.

      I think it depends a bit on how the damage might be done. For example, in my main Insitnct 2 Review video, I show throwing three Instinct 2 units against nasty lava rocks from a few meters away - not a scratch. I'd be hesitant to do that same test with three Fenix 7 units. But at the same time, that's a bit unusual. For day to day bonks and stuff, the Fenix 7 holds up just fine. It's the plastic case on the Instinct that seems to give a bit more (plus, the screen is lower down in it).

      Two fairly nasty combat tours didn’t phase my Fenix5X. Instinct is probably even more protected with the recessed screen. I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that’s broken more than the wrist band

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  2 года назад +1

      :) Those are the new 'Graphical' data charts on the Fenix 7. So in that case, shown from top to bottom I've configured it as: Stamina (how much energy I have left), Heart Rate (graphical), and Elevation (graphical). I think it's roughly a 30-45 minute trend of those.

      @@Dcrainmaker Thank you. They look exactly as some old ConnectIQ datafields, which are unfortunately not available for Fenix6, because they are most probably already abandoned. Hey! Question about the Instinct 2 mapping/tracking. If I premap a course- such as a bushwhack, will it show my position relative to the mapped course if I get off it, and will it display markers placed along a mapped course, assuming I added them in Garmin Explore/connect? Also, is there a limit to how much course the instinct will load?

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  2 года назад +1

      Yup, it'll show your little dot and then you'll see the breadcrumb trail (hopefully not too far away). It'll show you direction to get back to the nearest point on the course. The Instinct does have a lower course limit of 50 'course points', versus the Fenix 7 is 150 course points. Whether you hit that or not is frankly messy. In my experience, either you'll blow through both at once, or not at all - and it's heavily dependent on where you build your course (Garmin Connect is safest). Garmin says they're looking to raise that limit on Instinct 2 though.

    • @beng3591
      @beng3591 2 года назад

      @@Dcrainmaker By course points do you mean markers on a line or the points that compose a line?

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  2 года назад +1

      @@beng3591 Sadly, it's an incredibly messy definition. But no, it's not everytime the route changes, nor is it proper 'waypoints'. Rather, it depends on how each platform that defines a route generates the changes in points. I've been trying to get a more precise definition from Garmin without luck. I've never hit it when building on Garmin Connect, but have hit it when building on other platforms.

    Awesome video! Very informative. I am currently trying to decide between the Instinct 2 Solar and the Fenix 6 pro solar. I’ve got hiking and camping trips (not backcountry) planned this spring and summer so battery life and GPS is a consideration. But, my regular exercise routines involve a lot of walking/hiking, jumping rope, HIIT type workouts and some strength training. This watch will likely replace my Apple Watch so which one is more accurate for tracking those kinds of workouts, in your opinion? My outdoor activities also include swimming (lakes, rivers, ocean) and yard work (chopping, digging, gardening, brush clearing, etc). Thank you so much for the work you put into this review and I hope to hear back from you.

    I think one consideration that is worth mentioning with regards to the Instinct 2, is that it seems to be geared towards military operators. It has settings for HAHO/HALO (High Altitude, High/Low Open), security features like wiping your data, silent mode, night optics compatibility, that sorta thing. From that perspective, the differences between the Fenix and the Instinct are a bit broader. The Fenix would not be as useful to folks who find those features valuable, where those who don't may not find the Instinct as valuable.
