I’ve always enjoyed laying out for roofs and stairs, but I’m also a big fan of letting that ridge run wild and use the existing geometry tell you where to cut. Harder to mix up numbers when there aren’t any numbers

I framed a very complex roof a few weeks ago, and while studying it the night before I threw in the towel and said, you know what? The architect made this picture, with not framing guidelines. That literally means I can't be wrong!!! I'm the framer, lol.

What if you brought the ridge up before raising the two pairs of rafters? Drop it down below where the bottom edge of the rafters would be, raise the rafters over the top of the ridge, then gently lift the ridge up into place. It looks like everything is a pretty tight fit, so you may have not had room to do it that way. You might could temporarily flip the glulam on its side to gain some extra room above, then flip it upright before lifting it into place. Of course, that last idea is harder to do if the beam is rigged.

All you ever hear is "pride in workmanship" UNTILL you bevel a sleeper. THEN you're wasting your time. I like the bevel. What is the cost of 1/2 hour through the framing? Really, THAT'S where you focus? lol My opinion is the bevel is how its's SUPPOSED to be done, sure you can do it it with out it but should you? Those same people who are giving you flack for the beveled sleeper are the same ones giving you flack for not wearing fall protection while working on a flat surface. LOL

I listened to the OCD thing and you’re so right! I was kicked outta a crown job this summer? Did 46 doors , 6. Big pullouts , and crown in an 85 yr old farm house! Guy states; “you hv cracks on the inside corners but not over there”! I tell him I only charged him min price on the crown because it’s off in several areas but it will look great once I caulk that 32nd of an inch crack sir it’s a mile less than a 16th!
But I could see the disdain in his eyes and he said well leave I will do it? Ok ?
Last I heard it’s still there ? Just really a miserable exp working for ppl with that disorder!

no big deal but i use 2-2x6s parallel instead of 1- 2x12. just lighter up high. but..in this case a 2x12 was called for so there you go. Years ago, like 50,my father, a roof framer and ww2 vet called out for a 12 footer. as he pulled it up he said,"Gull son, could you have found a heavier board to hand me?" throughout my career his words were with me the whole way. when we jacked up houses to put in a foundation he taught me to look at the knots in the wood and to choose and why one is better as a brace. When he retired I asked what he missed? "the comradery". Carpentry is a fine trade.

I know the air lines are a pain but this video shows why my jobs have air for framing the speed and consistency vs battery is not close and as an added benifit framers/carpenters rarely ever need a hammer to finish a nail set, however battery tools are still very useful for trim and smaller framing fixes where the number of nails is smaller and time to get air is not justified. No truer words are spoken "framing is not furniture, wood varies thanks to god/nature and framing is best done when these variences are not obsessed upon". Ray

After doing this for long enough, I've come to realize that it's not how perfect it can be, it's how far off it's allowed to be. It's the only mindset that balances accuracy and efficiency.

I'd fire that architect and engineer. No need for such unnecessary stupidity. Maybe they're trying to achieve separation and make it look like a duplex? No matter, that poor gutter receiving the runoff during heavy NW rains is going to overflow unless you have 3 downspouts. Nice work as usual, but 28:33 looks like a giant band aid.

Forget the RUclips carpenter rabble. Those ropes are just in the way. Don't let the people who watch you make you uncomfortable while you're working because comments they make. in reality your more likely to trip over them.
