Mk9: great revival of the franchise MkX: poor story mode but gameplay on point and a great progression from Mk9's madness Mk11: destroying everything Mk9 and MkX built Mk1: making us regret for complaining about Mk11
By far the quickest i've ever lost interest in a MK game. Mortal Kombat is a top 5 gaming franchise for me. I had every port on my Sega genesis and the first two games my father bought when we got our OG Playstation was MK trilogy and MK 4. I've never been a big multiplayer guy. Over the last decade even less as I just don't have the time to "get good" and play match after match. I've always been a big single player guy and towers person who loved playing friends and family when they came over. I always felt if I played the game a lot early I would be able to unlock everything and be able to come back and play whenever I liked with all skins and extras. That last statement should tell you exactly why MK1 has become a problem. There is no end just the grind. WB has locked so much behind loot and tedious amounts of grind I haven't even officially unlocked half the rosters'second fatality inputs. WB wanted us to play match after match after match after match that they cut off the ability to have the second fatality inputs automatically unlock once you performed them like other games before. It's not fun. I have not touched MK1 since the day Quan Chi came out. I have no interest in Peacemaker, Ermac or takeda. To fully enjoy them I have to go back into invasions and grind each of them up when before I just downloaded them and their moves were there. Grind and greed destroyed this game. Games used to be a release from work. Now Studios and publishers like WB want you to treat these games like work except you don't get paid for it and they want you to keep paying them.
I remember calling this when it came out. I was watching a stream and made a comment about it. The chat made fun of me and the streamer said don’t do drugs kids. Glad to see everyone’s finally catching up to me
As a MK fan since the beginning, this was the best video I've seen so far explaining the situation with Mortal Kombat One, because I've seen several videos of people cursing the game just for pleasure and views, but few actually explained why they hate the game in the first place. Congratulations on your diction, for speaking slowly and explaining everything about the game.
Nah I can't be asked. You sell a Game for 70$ and you still add microtransactions, not to mention that you have to BUY THE FATALITIES,which Is one of the main parts of the franchise. Absolutely disgusting
Mortal Kombat 11 looks more then a Mortal Kombat game then Mortal Kombat 1, what a disgrace to call it MK1. They should have called it Injustice Kombat - Superhero Invasion.
@@VGHOST008 it's literally a new timeline introducing everyone as new. new players are just gonna think its cool. plus i mean you dont need to use the cameos.
I've seen the start of the franchise. Weird how Mortal Kombat could have died so many deaths at so many points in time, yet this is absolutely the worst crisis it's been in and it's entirely because of greed. Could you imagine them pulling shit like this back in the 90s or 2000s?
Monetization is probably the biggest issue with modern gaming aside from games being unfinished. I like MK1, but even I admit it is a pretty flawed game with a boring invasions mode, horrible monetization, Megan Fox's lazy acting, horrible online, and the game shutting its servers so you can't play as any of the previous DLC characters when another one comes out. Invasions is probably the one that makes me yawn the most. The rewards are great, but the road to get them is sleep inducing. SF6 also has horrible monetization, but at least that one doesn't have immense issues.
1:30 Personally, I feel that a darker more sinister look fits more with what I expect from Mortal Kombat TBH. Bright and colorful isn't what I picture when I think Mortal Kombat in the slightest. Off to a good start!
Nobody should ever let Harada live it down when he promised that legacy characters would not be MTs, then low and behold, we had to pay for Anna Williams and Lei Wulong in T7.
If Boon stated he wants to move on from MK, it's understandable. But killing it by giving their worst is a sad way to go, and almost treason for the long-time fans. If only NRS would give MK a great epic story mode that honors the journey, bringing up the best modes from every MK and improving them, giving big rewards for a decent effort, offering the best experience ever, and going out in a blaze of glory. Fans would be sad but grateful, enjoying the game to its last breath and keeping it as a dear memory, instead of hating something they've loved for at least half their lives.
The reptile costume coming in real handy with the green screen effect I see. Just wanted to say how much I loved that effect of the ninja changing with the moves.
I prefer MK11. Hell, I prefer MK9 still. MK1 does not interest me at all... I have played it, but I have not purchased it, and probably wont... and I've been playing MK since literally DAY ONE in the arcades... way back in 1992. They just changed too much... and making that "kameo" bullshit a base mechanic was a STUPID move.
That's crazy that MK9 tag team was considered unpopular by casuals. I have so many good memories playing co-op Mortal Kombat because of it. You can't do co-op anymore, which is pretty dissapointing.
I fully agree with your assessment on the cameo fighters. I never personally liked tag team fighting for the exact reasons you mentioned, and it was fine having it as a side mode in the game. But the cameos in MK1 only make the game feel like a half baked version of Blazblue Cross Tag or Marvel vs Capcom, forcing you to not only learn and master the moves of your main/s, but also the moves of a second character you can't even play as. It really should have just been a side mode, or even a mode that has the option of being turned off. EDIT: Imagine if in MK1's sequel (if it gets one), story mode played similar to MK11's krypt? A 3d environment you must explore and traverse through with the battles against other characters in each chapter basically being a boss fight? That would be amazing!
You mean like Konquest mode from MK Deception? Yeah a modern version of that would be great, especially compared to invasions. Hell, maybe some Motor Kombat too would be nice 😂.
@@jjeffrey7966I can guarantee 100% that if Ed gave some of you Konquest and something like Motor Kombat or Chess Kombat etc…, you still would have complained. At the end of the day, it honestly doesn’t matter what y’all want because it will never be good enough. At the end of the day, this has nothing to do with Ed. It has everything to do with ungrateful fans who got what they wanted and still whine. As I have said many times, people who complain about this game, it all boils down to skill issue.
@@Southernguy41 wtf, no I wouldn't complain at all if we got those. Instead we got invasions which is a really pathetic excuse for a mode. @@Gazyumi MkX was my favorite system for fighting in the series but had my least favorite roster ngl. I don't mind the new meter system either but it's funny how many ppl have to rely on cameos to even start a combo
@@yourbarber6732 that's definitely agreeable. the kameo system was a pretty odd thing to implement and is a really butchered version of the usual tag/assist based fighter. It is pretty irritating having things like frost kameo on someone's kit so they can get a full combo because I wasn't blocking low from fullscreen (admittedly that assist is easily avoidable) lmao. It doesn't matter to me as much cuz I've always been more of anime fighter an street fighter person myself.
The only thing that makes sense is Mortal Kombat 1 having a brighter color scheme. It was supposed to reboot the series, and the original MK game was relatively bright as well. Things got darker as the series went on.
My take on some points: I prefer the more vibrant look to MK for this one, I was getting a bit tired of the darker tone I don't like how you can customize characters at all, not in Injustice, not in MK11, and especially not in MK1. But since there is a drive to have customization in the game, they at least have to make it a good system Meter burn is much better the way it is now, it makes for a more decisive gameplay, where your choices and their risks matter more. Combos are much nicer too, I like a lot how much "free space" you have to play compared to MK11. And speaking of gameplay I think having kameos is fine, though they need a bit of work right now. I wouldnt mind if MK2 had kameos and wouldnt mind if it didn't. Also, krushing blows can go die alone and never return MK1 single player content is sad, but I'll be brief: story is much better than MKX and 11, but it took a shit on itself on the last third, invasions suck, lack of krypt is bad and normal towers is just not for me... and here I wished there was more things to talk about lol MTX are nuts lmao and its even worse when you look at the skins themselves... There are barely any skins in the game and aint no way I'm paying for pallets, cause I hate their existance Overall Yeah fun game, but it sucks
Absolutely agree with your take on the meter burn thing. It makes the system how it is in most fighting games with EX moves and it reduces the “guessing game” nature that MK11 had.
I never realised that the krushing blow mechanic was quite well hated. In my opinion, I thought they were pretty cool in a cinematic sense at least - also I felt the X-ray super moves were better than the fatal blows to be honest.
This whole video is better than the game itself. Very cool editing, nice cosplay and amazing accent. I really like the detailed explanation and mild humour sprinkled in✌
I loved the quality of the video. It didn’t feel overly produced yet high-quality. It has soul. Which is what Mortal Kombat one doesn’t have. I bought it on sale couple months after release and I was super excited. Played it for two days and then I went back to Mortal Kombat 11.
I disagree that bad choices will make the next game bankrupt. You see the same cycle again and again, gamer gets upset at a game, complain about it and say they're done with the franchise, Pubs/Devs announce a new release, same gamer gets hype and seems to forget the previous sentiments, rinse and repeat. I used to love playing fighting games, but ever since I saw where the industry is taking the genre and implementing egregious monetisation, I've stopped buying modern fighting games. If there was a game that I did want, I'll just wait a few years until the "Complete" edition is released. I remember back in the day when I defended SF4 and the many iterations, I was debating this with my friends about it and they were saying that those editions could've just been updates, and to be honest, I don't remember what dumbass excuses I was making to defend it.
I’m not usually one to hop on “this mistake is going to kill the franchise” bandwagons, but in this case, I genuinely believe MK1 will be the last Mortal Kombat game that sells well. The amount of hype around this game was palpable. Then it releases and it’s such a disappointing, soulless product. Everyone I know or follow that bought it put it down within the first month. But hey, 12 mainline games is a lot more than most franchises get to. We had a good run.
I actually uninstalled MK1 yesterday after feeling like beating the story mode and doing some of those invasion challenges was enough. Shame, the game has potential, and I enjoyed coming back to the series for the first time since Deadly Alliance, but it just wasn't enough to keep me interested long term.
Love the video, love the production, love the commentary. It’s all on point too man. As a huge MK fan, MK1 in retrospect after a lot of hours with it, is lackluster in so many ways simply due to WB greed and lack of fan service! 💯 🙌🏼
Mortal Kombat doesnt feel like Mortal Kombat to me anymore. The Story got so convoluted and lotta the characters dont even look like themselves. They look like a PG13 rated knock off versions of the actual characters
godddd I miss the mk11 intros and outros so much. they had so much personality, especially since you got 3 liner intros!!! I get that mk1 is new player friendly but I loved that about it.
I literally fell asleep tons of times playing Invasions mode, At times I was playing in and out of sleeping. I was bored out my mind after picking up the pad and entering invasions. Last two invasion seasons, I cope by turning off the logical side of my brain and activating my brain dead zombie mode. I gotta tell ya it works wonders for me to power through bore torture invasions.
yea i kept up and unlocked the boss skins each season, therefore leveling up some characters to unlock a decent amount of stuff in the game.... but I wouldnt wish that on anyone lmao
Been a huge fan of MK since 9 and even used to watch my older brother play Shaolin Monks. I will sadly have to say goodbye to Mortal Kombat as a franchise, even though I have been playing it for so long. I usually play for the story and lore, not caring so much about multiplayer stuff, yet the microtransactions and scummy tactics NetherRealm studios do is sad. Not to mention the lack of quality in the story. Never have I ever felt bored in an MK story mode until this one. So much cringe worthy bad voice acting (Nitara) and character designs to appeal to a certain people. And trying so hard to be diversity in their games' story. Loved seeing the story expand, but this reboot is plain bad. I wish they never went with the Kronika stuff, rebooting the ongoing lore. Furthermore, some character designs took it like a champ to their head, looking 20-40 times uglier than their previous title, not looking appealing. In MK11, the reason I started playing Erron Black and learn it was that I found the character cool and its design appealing. In MK1, none of the characters remade models look good (except for Ashrah). (Defaults). Which is why I have started playing SF and Tekken and won't probably look back on MK as a franchise. Until they get their stuff right. Sad to see a game franchise I love turn into a greed manifesto.
Love this video! Also, you are one of the few I’ve seen cover the nasty foot fetish that has been injected into this game. Thank you for that!! Subscribed
My major major major issue with this game is that Kameos are DLC. The fact that Kameos are SO important to amplifying gameplay and characters means if you dont buy them you are literally missing out on combo and gameplay options. So to optimize your non DLC character, you need to have all the DLC Kameos. Look at how Cham changed sooo much for the game, and she is locked behind a paywall.
Micro-transactions in a fighting game feel more scummy from the inception. Additional characters are often always meta upon release so having them be paid for sucks. Fighting games tend to be sparse on unique content to begin with. It takes a creative arcade mode and a healthy meta to get you money’s worth out of the game. Taking rewards that used to earn-able in game through challenges and secrets, such as skins, and selling them in addition to the game reduces my engagement as I don’t have anything fun to work towards and also makes me think what tf you were working on this whole time. This stuff used to be in the base game. Now you won’t see an MK game where the retro skins are on by default. They ALWAYS make you pay for that shit. If you really wanna play it, wait for the massive discount it usually goes on.
The meter burn having to be used precisely is bc in mk11 you could press it after the move starts making it harder for players to read the move therefore making it harder
lol it was a joke but he’s just bringing attention to the fact that the customization is so bare bones they couldn’t even seem to implement multiple shoes or boots that would fit each character and most of the alternates just have their pigs out 😂
One thing I truly hate about this game is the cartoonish character design. Characters don't have a strong, hardy look and physique fit for warriors, as was the case in previous entries. These are characters fighting in MORTAL KOMBAT, for God's sake. This is only exacerbated by the cartoonish, whimsical, cheerful overal visual design of the game, which runs in contrast with the brutality, tragedy and horror which has defined Mortal Kombat since the original trilogy.
The only person who truly deserves to buy the rights back of Mortal Kombat, is it’s one and ONLY……true creator: *John Tobias* He is the only person who actually cares about MK, he leaving Midway was the day the franchise began its slow death, he still has passion for this franchise unlike Crazy Ed, and he actually respects the fans. It has always been his creation which Ed & his team helped bring to life, and this franchise has to make some major retcons in order to remove a large chunk of its recent history if it has any real chance to properly move forward, which I say only MK1-4 + Mythologies should be seen as canon from that point onward. Give the rights back to its creator, cause MK is John’s baby and ultimately he is the last person who can even remotely save this dying franchise.
I think you nailed all the issues, though I'm just an outsider looking in cause I'm on the fence if I ever want to buy MK1. Lack of customization and fewer intros/outros than mk11 is one that baffles me, I had hoped down the line they would add more intros/outros as free updates. Although I'd have to disagree on the EX system going back to how it was, in MK11 delayed EX moves were an annoyance to deal with when blocking. It's either you get hit for thinking you could punish an unsafe move, or miss your chance to punish cause you thought the delayed EX was going to be used.
I agree dude and what is with that file size I have never had to remove injustice 2 from the harddrive but as soon as something needed to be deleted I got rid it was just too large
Tag team was the best thing to happen to casual players in my opinion. My sister and I used to play tag team towers all day long, she'd be Sindel and I'd be Scorpion. It was so much fun! I remember sitting down on launch day for MKX ready to play the tag team mode and we were very disheartened.
In terms of gameplay, I have to say I do prefer mk1 for the most part. Kameos are cooler to me than mk11's half assed "variations". But I definitely agree it falls short of mk11 in every other aspect (except graphics, they both look great)

No one likes to talk about the Ed Boon part either. I mean it's pretty obvious that Ed Boon has lost his care for MK. It's all about the money now.
I will never buy a MK game again. MK1 was pure trash
This game makes me realize how harsh I was to MK11. Never would I have thought that they could disrespect the franchise and the story even further
Nah I can't be asked. You sell a Game for 70$ and you still add microtransactions, not to mention that you have to BUY THE FATALITIES,which Is one of the main parts of the franchise. Absolutely disgusting

MK's biggest problem is that they rely way too much on guest characters to keep their games relevant
Their biggest problem is that NRS has never once written a coherent story and completely ruined the original one from mk1-mka
Thats not the problem, at least in my opinion, the guest characters spice up the game for me
@@SlimeBlueMS Facts that's not talked about enough the stories get worse and worse every year. The writers should all be fired.

Exactly when it’s fully a gimmick
Mortal Kombat 11 looks more then a Mortal Kombat game then Mortal Kombat 1, what a disgrace to call it MK1. They should have called it Injustice Kombat - Superhero Invasion.
And MK11 was largely disliked overall for how watered down the game was from MKX... NRS truly redefine fail every single time.
Mk1 is supposed to be new player friendly, introducing people to the franchise. It isn't 100% intended for the old players.
@@outworlded What are you talking about? Adding cameos didn't make the game any more 'player friendly'.

I've seen the start of the franchise. Weird how Mortal Kombat could have died so many deaths at so many points in time, yet this is absolutely the worst crisis it's been in and it's entirely because of greed. Could you imagine them pulling shit like this back in the 90s or 2000s?
They’re actually so lazy when it came to making this one 11 being a more appealing game despite being the previous franchise game is crazy
Old school MK fans stopped at MK9 after they completely ruined the story
They saw the incredible success of MK11 and tried to do the same but with way less effort.
Ed Boon: We need more microtransactions!
Harada: Are you challenging me?
Nobody should ever let Harada live it down when he promised that legacy characters would not be MTs, then low and behold, we had to pay for Anna Williams and Lei Wulong in T7.
More likely that WB wanted the transactions
You summed it all up perfectly. Well done! 👏

The editing 🔥🔥
That's crazy that MK9 tag team was considered unpopular by casuals. I have so many good memories playing co-op Mortal Kombat because of it. You can't do co-op anymore, which is pretty dissapointing.
Ind33d😊
I really hated playing story mode and being forced to do 1v2 fights in that game. And there were a lot of them.

The only thing that makes sense is Mortal Kombat 1 having a brighter color scheme. It was supposed to reboot the series, and the original MK game was relatively bright as well. Things got darker as the series went on.
My take on some points:
I prefer the more vibrant look to MK for this one, I was getting a bit tired of the darker tone
I don't like how you can customize characters at all, not in Injustice, not in MK11, and especially not in MK1. But since there is a drive to have customization in the game, they at least have to make it a good system
Meter burn is much better the way it is now, it makes for a more decisive gameplay, where your choices and their risks matter more. Combos are much nicer too, I like a lot how much "free space" you have to play compared to MK11. And speaking of gameplay
I think having kameos is fine, though they need a bit of work right now. I wouldnt mind if MK2 had kameos and wouldnt mind if it didn't. Also, krushing blows can go die alone and never return
MK1 single player content is sad, but I'll be brief: story is much better than MKX and 11, but it took a shit on itself on the last third, invasions suck, lack of krypt is bad and normal towers is just not for me... and here I wished there was more things to talk about lol
MTX are nuts lmao and its even worse when you look at the skins themselves... There are barely any skins in the game and aint no way I'm paying for pallets, cause I hate their existance
Overall
Yeah fun game, but it sucks
Absolutely agree with your take on the meter burn thing. It makes the system how it is in most fighting games with EX moves and it reduces the “guessing game” nature that MK11 had.
I never realised that the krushing blow mechanic was quite well hated. In my opinion, I thought they were pretty cool in a cinematic sense at least - also I felt the X-ray super moves were better than the fatal blows to be honest.
This whole video is better than the game itself. Very cool editing, nice cosplay and amazing accent. I really like the detailed explanation and mild humour sprinkled in✌
100% everything you said. Last NRS preorder for me. I'm still hopeful they will fix it over the next year, but I'm not holding my breath.

I actually prefer using meter burn at the same time as the move input, I find it easier
I lost interest when they first announced you had partner to call in.
This is a small thing, but you transforming into the different ninjas at the beginning was awesome. I was grinning the entire time.
Nice suits brother. What Mastery level do I need to unlock to get them?
Subscribed
What foot fetish?
It's all Budget Cuts like how Mr.Fleak always budget cuts and you know what I mean as budget cuts 😂
They turn Shao Khan to a real joke, gender swap carachters, erased Scorpion from their history. Yeah MK is dead for me.
If you really wanna play it, wait for the massive discount it usually goes on.
that was a crazy intro, good job bro!

5:52 that combo was brutal though
The only person who truly deserves to buy the rights back of Mortal Kombat, is it’s one and ONLY……true creator: *John Tobias*
He is the only person who actually cares about MK, he leaving Midway was the day the franchise began its slow death, he still has passion for this franchise unlike Crazy Ed, and he actually respects the fans.
I’m less than a minute in, and the costumes and effort have me mesmerized. You have a new sub good sir.
Man I could play towers of time for so long and I can't even stand to play invasions.
