Honda HR-V vs VW T-Cross 2020 comparison review

  • This comparison test is looking at two of the most practical compact SUVs on the market today - the stalwart Honda HR-V and the newly arrived Volkswagen T-Cross.
These two models bring big practicality to the light SUV market, with interior smarts that belie their pint-sized exterior dimensions. Both are very close in size, and the specs we have here - the Honda HR-V RS and the VW T-Cross 85TSI Style - they’re close on price, too.
This comparison test review will look at important things like value for money, fuel efficiency, practicality, safety, how they drive, ownership and more.
And in a twist to the usual format, I’ve been spending months with this particular Honda HR-V RS as a long-term loan car, so I’ve got to know it very well. I also did more than 600 kilometres in the T-Cross over my time with it, so this test is a particularly comprehensive look at the strengths and weaknesses of these two small SUVs.

As new as the t-cross can be ( including new safety tech) , certainly for most people buying a small SUV practicality and Reliability will come first as per the amount of money spent. At the end of the day , Japanese cars at this level will be a better choice than German cars. Good review by the way .

Had a HR-V for a year now and the only thing that lets it down for me is the media screen, which is the pits. Oh, and the relatively small range - tank needs refilling all the time. Otherwise, a wonderful car.

Why comparing HR-V to T-Cross? Isn't more reasonable comparing it to the T-Roc? Indeed, T-Cross' lenght is 411cm, while T-Roc's is 424 and HR-V's 433cm

I dont disagree I have a work colleague who has had two brand new Golfs one 2010 and one 2014, the 2010 several DSG issues and recalls though nothing that left him stranded, the 2014 started leaking coolant just after the warranty finished (plastic water pump i believe was the issue) but VW to their credit fixed this under goodwill. These reviews are new car reviews they dont really look at the after warranty period, if I was buying a used car I dont think i would consider VW even though they are nice to drive.

Mark Atkinson Most of the complaints I have heard was from people who in turn heard from their friends or relatives. It’s very rare the owner himself complains! It’s become more like perception now than actually issues being there.
There were definitely issues 10 years ago when VW group started electrifying everything in the cars and with the DSG. Most of the tech was new and ran into issues but now they are as good as any other manufacturer.

My Passat wagon exhaust sensor failed, then the starter motor failed, then water leaks came into the front footwells, then the tyre pressure sensors started reading all wrong. All were expensive fixes and now the dash that was pulled apart to find leaks, is creaking like crazy. Not happy Jan 😞

@@kensouza9239 Well that is true in my case, though still factual i have seen both cars, and the person in question was a very close workmate, both cars brand new and bought through novated lease, he went a Kia Cerato GT after his 2 VW experiences. I could probably get a direct quote from the owner if it would make my comment more credible. How about this go to a mechanic or car forum and ask if the two issues I mentioned are factual or not, I know what answer you will get. Having said all this I am currently shortlisting my next car and a Golf R is on that list.

I'm confused. The VW has hard scratchy plastics and it feels more premium? Not a dig but are we only worried about tech nowadays? Rear cross traffic alert is handy but all the other tech is to nanny those of us who are horrible drivers. Honestly, how hard is it to stay in your own lane? Whats wrong with a "limit" function, dynamic cruise control is like a nanny has taken over driving, brakes when it gets the slightest hint of another car that gets close to your lane etc. I use the speed limiter in the Escape all the time and it's perfectly adequate.
