Some of the best footage in Chicago O-hare airport that I've ever seen. At Chicago, the dominant airlines were always AA, UA and probably TWA back then. However, you would see Delta, National, Eastern, Braniff, Northwest, Capital, North Central and Continental airlines almost always too. The European bound PanAm Boeing 707s or DC-8s would show up occasionally.
I started my career with DL working the ramp at ORD in 1977, this brought back a lot of memories. ORD was Delta's 2nd busiest station at the time, with about 80-90 departures a day and I think we had only 6 gates. We shared the concourse with North Central who had all those Convair 580's zipping in and out. Across the tarmac in another concourse was TWA, who had a large operation at ORD and we'd get hammered from jet blast from their 747's and 707's, still operating at the time. The ass end of the regulation era when working for an airline was a really good job.
That was pretty cool! All the times I went plane watching at O'Hare in the '70s I never saw a VC-10. However, they did have a Comet out there that was pretty much on static display.
Great memories! My father worked for United in San Francisco, but we were from the Chicago area, so I spent many, many hours at ORD. Don't remember the photography issues inside the terminal, but finding spotting locations outside has always been a problem. Saw at least one scene taken from the E/F observation deck, and the Chicago Helicopter Airline landing at 7:28. That's a rare shot, indeed! Was about to head for bed, but now I have to watch 1960s SFO, first -- the only airport where I spent more time than at ORD!
My first commercial airplane ride was out of Kalamazoo, MI to O'Hare on North Central's Convair, then taking a Braniff Airlines 727 to Austin Texas, I was only sixteen and visiting my brother in Texas, he was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base, back in the seventies, great memories! Thanks for sharing this video, brought back fond memories!
Man 'O Man how I wish 14R/L 32R/L were still active! I lived in Lake Zurich then and it was so much fun to watch every body make their a initial approach to 14 Right. 727's 747's 737's, DC-9's DC-8's DC-10's Lockheed Electra 188's (mostly American and Northwest) Convair 540's (North Central) F-27's (Ozark) L1011,s ( Eastern Delta and TWA) Those indeed were the days!!!! Miss them!!!!
@@mikewilson4852 Right! Lived in NW suburbs not far from O’Hare. Yes, I remember the 14’s with all types of aircraft up until 2am or so. I lived off Golf Road and Elmhurst Road. This was late seventies and early eighties.
@ Mount Prospect between Dempster, Busse, Elmhurst and Golf Road box not far from UAL HQ on Linneman at that time. Don’t know what’s there now as haven’t lived in area since 1984.
@OSTARAEB4 Yes Sir! There used to be a Northwest 904 Cargo from Minneapolis to O'Hare nightly. I flew a Northwest 747 from O'Hare to Miami in the early 70's when I was in the Air Force stationed at Homestead.
You went from mid-sixties to 1979 and Runway 22(?) off Mannheim Road by then Lake O’Hare with takeoffs and banking East to head to Chicago and points E & S. Your dad took you there and you were the kid in the plaid shirt. I would occasionally watch and park by the entrance expressway lane before the terminals along the right or also from Elmhurst Road just over the NW Tollway hump in Elk Grove watching them come in onto 14R which has been decommissioned for about fifteen, twenty years now.
I know by then O'Hare had international flights not just Mexico & Latin America, but also flights to Europe & Asia. Bet the passengers aboard Mexicana were served tacos & tequila!😁😁
Great video footage, however artfully the sound was dubbed in, it would be wonderful if it were authentic. Great shots of the old ORD when anyone who flew airplanes out of there would know where to go just hearing “inner wedge cargo”
Great footage thanks for sharing. I've flown on most of those models of planes i.e, DC9, DC8, 727, DC10. Is the original tower still standing ? When I was a kid my dad would park the car along Irving Park Road, however, since 911 I don't think they allow you to do that anymore.
A Piedmont 737 coming in for landing shortly after start of video. A Capitol Airlines DC-8 on the ramp. A Continental 727 taxiing on the tarmac. Passengers boarding a Pan American 707.
Love all your videos but a lot of scenes are cut off abruptly Always seems when I’m really interested in watching a specific airliner (the 707 for example) there is a quick cut away!! Very annoying!!

I wake up to my first Christmas present. Thank you 😭 (tears of joy)
"Massive ORD"
You are too kind.
You are so very welcome!
I was so excited to see a Capitol DC-8. I loved being a flight attendant for them!
Sadly most of these air lines are gone..the glamor day's of Avation history. And the great ORD!
Beautiful! Love the old colors!
4:45 Beautiful Northwest Orient 727.🥰

Braniff 727 yeah 😁👍
This is gold, a beautiful Christmas gift. Thanks for the upload.
Northwest, TWA, Braniff, Ozark , Mexicana, Eastern, North Central and a few others I couldn’t identify are all gone now.
I flew American airlines 727 from Puerto Rico to others in 1989.😁
To O'Hare.😁
Pan Am too.
Pan Am and Continental too.
Simply Fantastic!! I see a BOAC VC-10!!
That was pretty cool! All the times I went plane watching at O'Hare in the '70s I never saw a VC-10. However, they did have a Comet out there that was pretty much on static display.
The convair 580s and the dc 8s and 707s miss all of them. Great footage.

Oh yes back when b727s dc-10s and md-11s had their glory days 😢😂😢
Even the “slow” propeller planes had style!
I grew up in Schaumburg in the 60s and 70s. Occasionally, dad would take me to the observation deck over the K gates to watch the planes.
Best of times.
Absolutely!
Loved seeing those Piedmont birds.

@OSTARAEB4 Sounds like that would have been on the south side of DesPlaines I am guessing.

@ I also remember the NW747 fly outs most likely on 32R and seeing those beauties do their soft turn ENE heading to Lake and on to Europe.

These are priceless clips!! 👍👍
Field of dreams
Crazy how quick the gear came up on some of those takeoffs.

Nothing like parking on the shoulder of Irving park road and watching planes.

But far better than silent. He knows his sounds.

all these clips are from other videos ive seen but still nice.

What are 1060s?
And like another of your great videos, JFK I think, no second part alluded to?
coming right up...!
