This was QUITE the wild ride out of ORD. Saw numerous missed approaches and some crazy crabbing. We changed to a different runway, shut down the #2 engine and resumed SET 2x on the taxiway to conserve fuel so we could fly north to escape the storms. Thanks for watching.
Heeey I fly on United the most and I've been through O'Hare enough to have seen snow, rain, thunderstorms, high winds you name it. Love O'Hare honestly
Some years ago, I was on a Southwest flight from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. While taxing for takeoff, Our runway was switched a couple of times and we seemed to be taxing all of the place. The pilot finally came on the intercom and said "Well, we have taxied about as far as we can and will have to fly the rest of the way to Los Angeles." Everyone laughed.
Every time I see a video of a plane leaving the ground my mind cannot comprehend the difference between ground speed and how fast the plane is traveling through the air. While on the ground there is a feeling of speed, but once it is in the air I lose this awareness. I imagine it might sound ridiculous and I may be alone but thought I'd put it out there. Enjoyed the video.
Ahh I remember this storm. I work at UPS in Omaha,NE and this very same storm diverted our A300 to Kansas City while we rode out the storm. Rain was so intense and hard that we couldn't even see the taxi lights that were only about 50 yards from our building and hail was reported getting up to near golf ball size. Glad you made it out in time because that storm was no joke.
Reminds me when I flew back home over the Rockies, seeing the wing bounce and flex like that was a bit of a surprise. Oddly fun with the amount of turbulence though 😂
You aren't kidding, Tuesday evening was a wild one. I flew into MKE Milwaukee about 6:30 PM and you could see the thunderstorm anvil tops blowing in from the west already. Southerly winds gusting to 40 mph then.
Former F/A here for over 25 years based in Chicago. I will say flying in the summer can be difficult in the Midwest. Weather comes up very quickly and the controllers did the right thing to keep you safe by redirecting you, even if adds time to your taxi. Secondly I really don’t think you were “hit” by lightning 3 TIMES!!! . The pilots would have turned around and landed. What you saw was a big flash .
When the pilot told the passengers there would be a little extra taxiing time, he wasn’t kidding!! Push back from the gate started in daylight, but the plane didn’t reach the runway until nightfall. The pilot also stated that they’d be flying toward Montana, but after watching this video I think the runway they taxied to was IN Montana!!😂🤣
I can’t remember ever seeing approaches on the 22's at ORD and I’m on FR24 pretty much every day. Really like what you did with showing the other flights on the radar.
Great filming. Been grounded awhile. No flights in immediate future. Hopefully one last trip to Europe next year. Thank you for the visual. I listen to ORD ATC n watch Flightradar at same time. Worked at Delta- KLM and Air France. Res/ Acctg/ and Cargo CSD. Great life and best jobs ever!
I remember that day, looking up at the westbound departures heading up to the north from the Arlington heights area. With the tailwind everyone was doing ~300 knots across the ground, just screaming
Awesome video Reed! I knew it! I have been following your channel since you flew on a Silver Airways Saab 340 in Florida! That was 13 years ago already! I knew there was a reason to follow your channel and videos! I really appreciate you sharing these over the years! I’m honored to be a subscriber! Many more happy years of flying Sir! From a long time subscriber! Mark in Iowa!
Ok, this is going to be interesting. I remember this. This was just a couple of days ago. That wind was something else. And they still flew through this. I was thinking they would not try this. And I live in Bensenville, IL Four blocks from O'Hare. WOW. And I want to become a pilot. lol.lol. and fly regionals as a first officer.
I love this video! This may sound crazy, but I like flying in this kind of weather. The only thing i don't like about it is the extreme turbulence which comes with flying through storms like these. Other than that, looking out of my window and seeing the rain fall and the dark clouds outside is great!
I was in the uber lot at O'Hare one evening a few years ago waiting for a ping to pick someone up and enjoying watching the jets take off. There was a really long queue of jets sitting there being intespersed with the jets coming in to land right over my head. Then no more jets were landing. Then I saw all the jets in the queue slowly start to taxi past me and around to the other side of the airport. The wind direction had changed enough that they had to reverse everything. Wow.
I just watched the video after making that comment. This is the reverse of what I saw that night. If the person filming this was on the other side of the plane you would have seen the uber lot where I had been sitting. I was in the TNP delta lot and the jet took off from 28-C if you look at Google maps. This is probably way too much information.
14:34 right over the Kennedy(Jane Addams/ I-90) and the top golf in Schaumburg I believe. If you guys took off westward and turned right( north) then that’s gotta be it.
Connected in St. Louis that same day. Was late to the destination due to extensive reroute. The ride was pretty choppy even flying around the thunderstorms.
You know you're screwed when the wings are flapping before takeoff. Happened to me once from a EWR to LOG flight. We were delayed 8 hours and as one who doesn't like flying anyway, it was a hell flight. I got puked on by another passenger.....awful, awful stuff.
I was there that day! We flew to Amsterdam out of ORD. We were delayed an hour and half because of maintenance issues with our plane not because of thunderstorms although we encountered them after takeoff. This was on 5/21/24 right?
We flew out of yvr later that night one of the most turbulent turns we had the wind direction changed a lot we had a lot of bumps and what ever and the seatbelt sign was on most of the flight
I live in S. CA My airport is SNA (John Wayne) I have never had a flight delay, missed flight, cancelled flight or ANY other change due to weather! Yup, it's expensive to live here but there are perks!
My first flight on United out of ORD was on a DC-8-61, sitting in the tail and enjoying a bumpy ride over midwestern thunderstorms. Coffee was not easy to drink.
this flight was just about a week before i flew in to ORD from DFW myself. it was windy as all hell, the approach was kinda rough but the pilot handled it well.
Where is the thunderstorm? It didn't look like a storm It just looked a bit cloudy partly cloudy with moon out. Where's the storm? It didn't look like storm .
you can tell by the sharklets on the wingtips it's an old bus. If you live near the departure runway like I do you will hate them as the NEO ones are much quieter.

What day was this? I think we might have been on that runway.
YIKES
The pilots voice, music to my ears…..soothing 🫶❤️🇦🇺

@@karinbernard7341wait… u were on that flight? or u laughing to the comment

That made me lol.
Honestly this video was quite peaceful to me, call me crazy if ya want!
nah, just attention grabber. It was bumpy, you can see a few jolts on departure. It wasn't peaceful Stop....
your crazy.

Very funny
"Up, Bob! Up, over, and around some, then down again."

Not his fault. Bozeman MT isn't exactly a memorable place

You are not alone. Same here.
Exactly all that speed on takeoff then it's poof your just gliding thru the air.
Like watching one fly over at 35,000 feet at 500mph. Agreed.
its even crazier when you know its 200 mph near the ground but 550mph in the air, cannot imagine what that would look like ground level
@@jame8618 It would look like a missile, hence the confusion about the Pentagon on 9-11.

That’s one of the best Chicago plane videos I’ve ever seen! Nice one! 😁✈️
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed watching and appreciate the effort I put into these videos.
Used to live near Chicago. Landing at Midway in dense fog, where you don't see the runway out the window until you're on it, was so much fun!
That was a cool flight!
As a trucker, I’ve been through Bozeman Montana many times, never knew they had an airport
Best take off video ive seen, thanks
Sehr cooles Video mit dem perfekten Sound. Danke
I just flew out of O-Hare and I just saw my united flight. We were heading to Jackson Hole. We were the 737-900.
are you serious?
You could tell it was a fast moving storm by just looking at how fast the clouds were moving. Pretty sick!
Welcome aboard flight 516
We are making our way to ,
Ummmm, ahhhh , hmmmm
to WHEREVER is on your boarding passes.
🤪🤓
Beautiful moon shot! I have been really lucky with my air travel avoiding any big storms. Great video!
Thank you! Wish I’d had my bigger lens to get an even better shot of the moon.
Looks like something out of a horror movie.

Good video. It didn’t look like the flight was too bouncy after takeoff.
or else the cameraman would not have been able to keep his camera so steady. Try filming in a small plane - not easy.
Cool vid. Grew up in the suburbs taking flights outta midway. Landings were, building, building, building, billboard, shit, power lines, road, shit, fence, runway. Phew.
WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No wind, no lightning, minimal rain! What a CRAZY MIDWEST THUNDERSTORM!!!!

did they like hold, restart the engines at 9:54 bc it was a long hold?
Yep! They turned one off. Good catch.
crazy storms indeed! great video!
why do some flights on a320 families have the flaps down before pushback? /gen
Was that Wrigley Field you can see lit up ?

This is why I book my flight as early in the morning as possible. Less chance of bad weather.
When it's that windy, we call it "Oh! Hair!!".
Looked pretty sporty lol. Loved the shot of the plane taking off and crabbing into the wind!

"Got struck by lightening several times." Right.....how do you know that...?
I like the pretty color lights
I’ve taken off in stuff like this. One time the plane got hit by lightning. That was cool. Everything went totally white for a few seconds.
munchkin is the best thing ever and it is the only mundane game I’ve ever played munching
I finally found a youtube vid that was in ORD
I have been on a flight to Chicago midway from Omaha with a thunderstorm during the flight that hit turbulence during the whole flight
Damn how long was that taxi and wait really?
why are the flaps and slats deployed at the gate???
Why not. Mostly during taxi.
@@PeterNGloor you didn't understand my question
Lovely take off...but WHERE was the " storm"....???
Did you not see it? lol
Thanks!
Thank you, Bruce!!
Quite a bit of wind shear on the take off and climbs you can see the wing bounce. They don't call it the windy city for nothing.
Night 😊
Beautiful video ❤
We flew out of yvr later that night one of the most turbulent turns we had the wind direction changed a lot we had a lot of bumps and what ever and the seatbelt sign was on most of the flight
