- In today’s episode, we are going to talk about Why Russia’s New ‘Checkmate’ has a really big wing? Keep watching the video to get the answer.
In July 20,2021, Russia’s Unified Aircraft-Building Corporation and the Sukhoi Aircraft Company used the opening day of the Moscow Aviation and Space Expo (MAKS) to take the wraps off a new single-engine stealth fighter. The roll-out of this airplane, now called the Su-75 Checkmate Light Tactical Aircraft, was made the centerpiece of the traditional Day One visit to the show by Russian President Vladimir Putin. It’s a new design that Moscow hopes will create a niche for its combat aircraft industry in the export market. Their intent is to upend sales by competitor aircraft built by other nations the Swedish JAS-39E/F Gripen, the Lockheed Martin F-35. and even the Shenyang J-35, a Chinese plane in development even longer than the Su-75 by offering a cheaper, Russian-made alternative.

A large wing on a fighter primarily has 2 reasons:
- High maneuverability (low wing loading)
- large Fuel storage
More wing erea making it able to go higher
And more space for weapons?
Also meaning easy target
@@hopefullylost4012 all USA aircraft similar big wings…… but their jets are less sleek tho
Correct, the brits had the delta wing fighter in the late 50's called gloster Javelin. Like the Vulcan delta wing bomber they were inherrently steaalthy with low radar cross section.

"Success" of the F35 on the market, can only be seen by two key factors: First is that it's primarily a pre-order financed, Australia, Turkey, Japan, etc... Second would be the still strength of US diplomacy to bribe, or even scare countries into weapon deals, yes, as a country you risk gigantic problems if you trade with Chinese or Russian weapon manufacturers. So let's not talk about nonexisting "free market" for weapons or that as a measure for any weapon system. Weapons sale is pure politics.

Su 75 isnt stealth or 5 gen its just as low rcs as j 31 or f 16 Without most weapons or drop tanks but that is not stealth or 5 gen.
5th gen fighers are stealth
5th generation is just a silly marketing slogan. Invented by Lockheed Martin to make it's plane sound cooler.
And stealth is also a scam....stealth doesn't exist.
You can lower a planes RCS but you can't eliminate it.
And long wavelenght radars can see 'stealth'.
@@KondorDCS nearly a decade ago Iran downed a Sentinel drone which is far far more steathy than any of those "5th gen"
And they detect the drone with legacy system from the 70s , steath is overhype and underperform
big wing=low wing loading=nice manuverbility
also low loiter speed so its useful for ground attack.
So you must know the weight and wetted aspect ratio of the finished design. Thats impressive if true. If not - your statement is pure conjecture
Big wing also means more drag.

If they could truly hit that $25 - $30M price in production, and it had any kind of advanced avionics, they’d probably sell like iPhones.
the Su-57's cost is in that ballparc (when they signed the 76 contract in summer 2019 the average cost of an airplane was the equivalent of 34.2mil$ by today's exchange rate it's 30 mil$ already ). With 1 less engine and less sensors than the Su-57 and a lot less body work (smaller size, less fuel pumps, 1 less weapons bay etc) ... their production cost could easily be in the 20-25mil$.
Ofcourse when the contracts will be signed for the Su-75 they will not be 30 times the number of airplanes, as the contracts inculde spare parts, simulators, weapons, training pilots and technicians for maintenance ... so if for example vietnam gets 24 Su-75 the contract value willbe closer to 1.7 billion $ rather than 672mil$ (28mil$ per fighter) which means the Russians can squeeze the margin of benefit in the fighter itself to increase money influx from other aspects over the time (Maintenance/potential upgrades/weapons).

if you compare the unit price (fly away cost of the fighter) the diff would be in the 30% range which corresponds for VTA (20%) and 10-15% profit margin for the constructor.
So if the unit cost is 24 mil$ (high end estimate) the selling price with 10% profit margin will be 32 mil$. ( constructor making 2.88 mil$ profit and government getting 4.8 mil$ in taxes)

Considering the Su 57 is marketed as a cheaper F 35 and most of F 35 issues stem from it's small wing and vtol, I think there's you're answer right there.
I thought the 57 was marketed against the F22.
The SU 57 is needed for internal use, most of the characteristics are ahead of the F 22.
The F 22 is ahead in stealth, but there is a minus of "full" stealth. The technology is not fully completed because in order to achieve "complete" invisibility, it is necessary to worsen the aerodynamics of the aircraft. In my opinion, Russia has chosen the path of the Su 57, make it excellent in aerodynamics, but also add a little stealth. Apparently, Russia is still stagnating in its production, I'm waiting for it to start producing in normal quantities. In the meantime, a batch has been made.
Not true. This plane was not ordered by the Russian armed forces. It was created on an initiative basis exclusively for commercial sale to third world countries. Therefore, we set the base cost cheaper than everyone else. Since twin-engine options are expensive for such countries. And no placement on the aircraft carrier was planned. During the presentation, the manufacturer only expressed the hope that the Russian armed forces would also show interest in this aircraft. Where did you get such conclusions?

Larger wing means more payload and shorter takeoff, its not complicated
Has the SU-75 flown, yet? Will it become available in quantity in less time than SU-57 has thus far required?
Depends on contracts. SU-57 is strictly for domestic use, so its production is slow, because war budget of Russia is limited, but SU-75 is announced as an export-oriented fighter, so if there will be many buyers (you know, MiG-21s are good, but it is time to replace them, so I think there WILL be many buyers, especially considering the price), there will be great production numbers

A fighter design from the 1980's isn't even that old. Think F18, F16, and F15 all of which are from the 70's and 80's and have been modernized several times.
The Mig 35 and Su 35 are much more significant upgrades over their predecessors compared to american counter parts. Not only did they get technological and digital retrofits, the airframes are entirely new (not an old frame with new stuff) and have been modernized using modern materials, manufacturing tech, and ip, making them truelly new planes even if they look alike.
The Su-57 is by far the most advanced fighter that is actually in service, as its capabalities aren't limited by weapon capacity (F22), flight capabilities (F35), weight (J20), etc. It is a true multi role stealth jet. It is both a fighter and bomber, as well as a standalone EW suite and weapons guidance and AWAC system for drones and other fighters.
Su-75 is an export focused plane, russia won't be buying it to replace existing fully functional su35/mig35 fighters as it would actually be a downgrade. Seeing as to how the mig35 and su35 are not for sale, this su75 seems to be a beta test for other countries to buy and use and for russia go gain valuable data on a cheap stealth fighters operational capabilities.
Considering it has a max weapon weight of 16klb and an r73 weights some 250lb, this is a very capable competitor to an F35, especially if it does in fact use an i30 engine, which is nearly double the capability of the F35. The engine is still in development however, so this could be a cash grab plane to fund its completion and manufacturing/retrofit of existing Su57's.
Now as for low RCS...its possible its on the level of the rafale or eurofighter, which is already pretty great for a 25-30m$ plane.
As for the wings, this seems to be a nose authority plane since it will have thrust vectoring.
Su-75 is a plywood model. It may have big wings, small ones, and whatever else made of plywood.
The material and electronics probably not good enough to deal with attacks like Javellin/Stinger. Take years to get in production
The new russian aircraft of 6 th generation is amazing aircraft ever build in the world.specially with price and new radar matryoshka capable to reech in the long distance other aircraft .I THINK THE RUSSIAN IS ONE STEP FORWARD THE USA!!
HA HA HA HA Russia has no 5th generation only 4.5 generation and only a small number. 6th gen is a pipedream for Russia.
@@lw7238 mig 41 idiot 😂
The only thing that scares the new Russian "superbombers" is the YT community. Nobody else is surprised.
Why do eagles have big wings and chickens small ones?
Cause chickens are yellow and have a smaller beak. Beak size matter if you want to fly fast.
Uhhh what about the F-35C? You know? That one where a single wing is 2x the width of its fuselage?
Fact! It can turn harder and fly slower. The rumor has it that there are Un-Manned drone models of an F-35 out there. Fact, F-22's replace is already flying, the head of the USAF said so.
Except text flights already took place in the UAE at the airshow
lol no, they didnt
Exposed engine exhausts + inadequate radar absorption material + huge wings = a nice fat target for F-22's
The issue of exposed engine exhausts is actually much smaller than most would be led to believe. In fact high aspect (head on) stealth features are the most sought after (look at more recent j20 and su57 designs) What is important in most cases is that they cant see you approaching for the attack. Similar reason why the F22 was made to be most stealthy from a head on aspect. Not that it doesn't matter, but if someone is looking up your exhaust, it doesn't really make much difference if you've already shot and turned around. Plus who knows, maybe it will have 3d thrust vectoring? F22 stealthy engine exhaust design makes this impossible.
Not sure how you determined how much radar absorption material they plan to use... but it will certainly be less than the f22 or even f35, and for good reason since it degrades very easily and needs constant maintenance to remain effective. Keep in mind high maintenance costs are a big part of the reason we aren't getting any more F22s. Less stealth is a price many countries would be willing to pay in order to have more stealth aircraft. Considering this: you would just break even for cost effectiveness if you shot down 1 F22 for every 10 SU75s lost. Not so bad if that is the actual price ( I suspect that is a little optimistic though )
Wing size doesn't really impact how easy of a target it is, and if it did... F16 is about 6 feet smaller, F35 4 feet smaller, F15 is about 4 feet larger, while f22 is 5 feet larger. Larger wingspan is mostly beneficial.
Wing size does impact how much internal fuel you can carry, and as a result the combat range which is extremely important. In any contested airspace you aren't going to be able to perform any aerial refueling. Maybe mq25 will change this though. mq25 is pretty exciting stuff.
Not that I expect the SU75 to really stand up to the F22, sure some corners will be cut, and capabilities promised and not quite delivered for another 5 years ( looking at those SU57 engines ) but if it enters serial production it has the potential to out compete the 4th gen F series and maybe even the F35.
@@dgood9591 Russians do like their thrust vectoring. I have seen skilled USA pilots use the push fan system achieve impressive thrust vector maneuver. Given on the F35 the cover shield for the lift fan flaps open I suspect using this at combat speeds is laughably outrageous. A little less stealth for the ability to dogfight better is a trade off I expect from a Russian.
@@christopherboyle2403 Dog fights are only for dreamers, building an airframe for that is not practical anymore. It's obvious that the US is getting away from that outdated concept. It's shoot and scoot with long range rockets.
@@lw7238 The USA employed this doctrine once before regarding machine guns. Why do aircraft need machine guns when you can fire and forget (sometime in the 70s). A few dogfights with MIGs which had machine guns fitted had the USA decide maybe the airframe should have some machine guns fitted.
The pilot is a bigger problem. I expect we will see more fly by wire equipment allowing for more manoeuvrable and faster airframes. Relying on fire and forget missiles alone is a mistake or you would just build longer distance missiles.
@@christopherboyle2403 It's also for ground firing. But you don't build an airframe around dog fights. That would be stupid. The machine gun is a last resort if all else fails and you can't escape. I never said they would get rid of them but they are pretty much useless now for dog fights.
India should buy this , should be 1st customer 😉
Isn't it strange that every other country's "Stealth" fighters just appear to be a mashup of US Stealth aircraft and prototypes? As if they pick and choose want they want from the F-22, YF-23, YF-32 and F-35. I wonder why that is??? I'm sure they could come up with their own stealth aircraft without having to resort to spying and espionage! After all, it seems that all I read in comments sections is how great certain militaries are; and I'm sure you know which country I'm talking a out without having to mention it.
the thing is you cant make a design and expect it to be stealthy , there are limits and also about stealing and spying on US , every country does that and was done .
production in 7 years?? wake me up then
The plane will not fly as it is mocked up. I would be shocked if they didn't know that, but mocked it up anyways to have something that looks good.
Os aviões russos são os mais bonitos e muito tecnologicamente avançados.👏👏👏👏
yeah, right…. :))))
First part of your comment is subjective so I won't comment on it but the second part is objectively wrong. Russian aerospace is lagging far behind the West's now
Soooo this is the 2nd iteration of checkmate. They lost the first game...
Intake inlet is so small gonna be hard for maintainers to get in for post flight inspections.
I think its a delta wing design

also F35 is a "flying turkey"
Blimey that looks familiar 🙂
Yeah, nonexistent fighter has pretty big wings. Tomorrow the chief engineer will sober up and draw smaller wings.
Has a single one of these paper planes been built yet? Have they demonstrated this plane at any airshows?
No
Why she's got big wing? Simple. She joined Big Wang community
Su75, Big wing, more lift, better manouverability.
Fail-35, small, stubby wings, great for VTOL, but also less lift, poor manouverability....cant turn, cant climb, cant run.
Who’s running?
