Cradle went from something I’d never heard of to one of my favorite series so fast jt was mind blowing. I bought the audiobook version of Unsouled and I immediately bought the entire series and mainlined it over the course of a couple weeks. Travis Baldrees performance couple with Will Wights pacing and the strength of personality within all the characters just made it a joy to listen to and I cannot wait for Waybound.
Also just finished Faithful and the Fallen and was pretty amazed at how it evolved for me from kind a “it was okay” with book one to being something I didn’t want to end by the finale.

I have read the "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" books (admittedly quite some time ago) and I remember that I enjoyed the read, but I cannot remember anything else from them - no plot, not a single character, nothing... and I've read other older series also a long time ago like Elric, Dragonlance, the Drizzt books or Dune and I still remember each of them vividly. I also have fond memories of the Otherland series by Tad Williams.
I always thought that I perhaps should reread M,S&T as everybody seems to love it so much... but now I think I'll rather invest my time in a new series.

I have never read anything from Robin Hobb but I have heard many good things about these books, looks like you confirm it. Poeple have been telling me that plotwise they are "ok", but they apparently have some amazing characters and are very feelings oriented. I have absolutely loved the original First Law trilogy, so much in fact that I'm kind of afraid to start reading the standalones, because how everything in the originals ended was such a masterwork (like genuinely, the last 100-or-so pages of the Last Argument of Kings were absolutely unputdownable!).
I would really recommend you to read The Chronicles of Amber (a somewhat forgotten gem and one of my very favorite series of all time).

    • @MattsFantasyBookReviews

Yeah the Hobb thing you mentioned is true. "so so" plot but INCREDIBLE characters - Robin Hobb is just the absolute best at character writing. And yes, keep a Kleenex handy.
Also while I didn't love the First Law standalones (they were good, not great), the 2nd trilogy is a masterclass.
And I do have Chronicles of Amber on my TBR!

Oh please, please, PLEASE, read all the Realm of the Elderlings (in order, there are 16 books!) they are just the best ever!
As for the Abercrombie stand-alones, go for it! I think they are wonderful and Heroes is my favourite of all his books! I would seriously, seriously recommend you listen to them on Audible - the voice actor (Stephen Pacey) is the god of voices and narration and just brings them alive.

@@tanja9364 I'm currently in the middle of The Assassin's Apprentice and so far it's ok :). I'm not sure if it will be my thing though, as Im mostly after the fascinating creative fantastical element which, from what Ive heard, this series somewhat lacks, but I've also heard many great things about these books in general and their reputation is very much one of kind as most people don't seem to praise them for their story or their worldbuilding, but rather for the characters and the writing itself. From what I've read so far it kind of reminds me of Earthsea.
As for the rest of The First Law, Im also giving it a try! So many people recommanded it to me, that I just need to give it a try - some even said the the second trilogy is actually better than the original. And thank you for the recommandation! I've heard that Mr. Pacey is a great narrator, but I'm not a native English speaker and while The First Law might not be as complex as let's say Malazan, I still prefer to get and understand every single detail from my readings which does not always happen when I'm listening to auidobooks, especially in English.

    • @tanjamcfadyen209
      @tanjamcfadyen209 Год назад

@@cerfreferf6600 Oh no! NOTHING like Earthsea. I hated Earthsea! Robin Hobbs books just suck you in, spin you round and round and by the end of the 16th book, spit you out in a messy sobbing lump! I definitely would praise her for her story - when you get to the end and think about all the threads she drew together and you remember the length of time these books were written over and the fact that the first book was supposed to be it, you realise how GOOD the story is. As for the world building - it is extensive, huge in fact. Each trilogy adds to the world, beautifully. PLEASE persevere and keep going, I cannot praise these books highly enough.
As for the First Law, oh yes, the second trilogy is just brilliant, so good. Epic, funny, sad and thought provoking. I quite understand about listening to the books, your English is VERY good, maybe you could read the physical book AND listen to it at the same time? The only reason I mention the audio books is because of the voices Stephen Pacey uses - one of the characters is called Clover and he uses an Irish accent - so very apt and brings the character alive.
So dear friend, keep going and enjoy. Kind thoughts.

Agree with some, disagree with some, you're flat out wrong on others. :) What strikes me is your dedication to your work as a reviewer. You'll grind through books you don't like so that you can have the full perspective on a series. It's really interesting when you say the first couple of books weren't good, but the series got better after that. How many people would continue that long to find out? Thanks so much for your dedication and thorough reviews, and since you are such a fast reader you keep my list of titles to look into full.
btw...one of the things I really like about the Asimov robot series is his level of understanding of the science involved. So many science fiction stories are a lot more fiction than they are science. Asimov knew the science side cold and it really shows in how the contemporary and future blend so naturally.

I've read most of the series listed, and for the most part agree with your assessment. Out of all of them, and I know this will get me some flak, the only series I could not finish was Wheel of Time. I liked the first couple of books, was kinda meh on the next few, then it devolved into endless descriptions of clothing and food and braid-tugging and I could not bring myself to read on. I also found the interpersonal relationships painful to read, just too far on the YA side of things for me. I really felt that some serious editing would have helped the series immensely.

For me, this was mostly helpful in seeing where you have gaps in your reading, since you are not just covering your top hundred, or bottom whatever. Notable absences include Robert E Howard (Conan, Kane, Krull); Michael Moorcock; any Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance; Raymond Feist; David Gemmell; Charles DeLint Newford books; Steven Brust’s Vlad Taltos books; Donaldson’s Thomas Covenant books; The Book of the New Sun; the Dark Tower; Jenny Wurts; Lois McMaster Bujold; LeGuin’s Earthsea books; Dune; Jacqueline Carey’s Terre D’Ange books; SM Stirling (especially the Nantucket and Emberverse books); China Mieville’s Bas-Lag books. And that’s just the beginning of some slightly long in the tooth fantasy/sf that I think is either great or worth trying. (Not mentioning the books I thought were terrible, nor older children’s fantasy like Alice).
It’s hard for me to comment on the nostalgia effect of LotR, but I still think you are wrong. I’ve reread other books that I loved as a kid and found them severely wanting - mostly the re-read confirmed for me what an idiot I was. I’ve reread LotR several times (but not in the last 20 years). Each time, I’ve found new levels within it and been even more impressed with how well it holds up. Not saying that you should like it, but I think you are not universally correct about why others hold it in such high esteem.

-The Earthsea series, the first 3 were highly interesting and diferent in their daoist and leftist inspiration. The last 2 were lame.

    Strong Disagree:
    1) Mistborn Era 2. This is an "A" for me. I enjoyed it at least as much as the first Mistborn trilogy.
    2) Dresden Files. I don't love all the books, but there are enough really good ones to absolutely put this into the "A" category.
    3) Foundation. At least a "B".
    4) Lord Of the Rings. "S" Tier. Why is it "S" tier? I have read and thoroughly enjoyed it at least a half dozen times. Anything that can still enchant me after that many readings has to be "S" Tier.
    Strong Agree:
    1) The Book of the Ancestor. It was OK. I finished the first book, but I just didn't have the interest to finish the second.
    2) Discworld. There are a lot of "A"s in this series. The issue is that some of the arcs just didn't land with me.
    3) Stormlight Archive, for Obvious reasons.
    For the rest, I either
    a) Haven't read
    b) Am within a grade of your opinion or don't care enough to write about it, or
    c) I stopped reading for personal reasons, often do to the overly graphicness of the material.

I read the Stephen Erickson book _Gardens of the Moon_ and was not impressed. I purchased it on a recommendation along with some R. Scott Bakker books. I really loved the R. Scott Bakker novels as he really tried to balance his world with reasonable absurdity while dignifying it with his best attempt at high quality writing. It's pretty grim, and certainly has an aspect in it that reminded me significantly of Herbert's _Dune_ but overall, save the very last novel, which was unfortunately rushed, the series was incredibly immersive and imaginative, written with flare, proving the labor of love that it was. Bakker didn't just want to retell his D&D stories, he wanted to explore his actual writing and technique. Erickson's first book failed to draw me in, however. It just didn't do it for me. The writing was very bland and the characters even more so save some dude that flew around in a city in the sky...interesting, but just a small side character. Please, anyone, tell me what it is about these books that are so good. I understand he is novelizing his RPG games, but I'm not interested in slogging through multiple books before I start to hit gold. I do have the second book, but I also got David Gemmel's first novel _Legend_ and I heard great things about the late author's novels.
_Mistborn_ was a DNF along with _Shadows of what was Lost_ . Those books were not for me at all. Bland writing, that failed to immerse me in the setting, unlike, say, Patrick Rothfuss does in _The Name of the Wind_.
And as an aside, the Tad Williams _Memory, Sorrow, & Thorn_ I really enjoyed. Matt, consider revisiting these.

@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Haha no worries, man! All subjective. I am def a Sanderson fan - especially SA and his WoT work. I liked Mistborn, and I credit it with getting me and many others into Fantasy reading! But Tolkien is SEMINAL to me. He's night and day different from something like Mistborn. Malazan ahead of Tolkien I get, though!

I thought the LOTR books were so dry and boring.

I agree with nearly all of these, but the ones I disagree with I REALLY disagree with! 😂

@@93siguy I like The Dresden Files, but the big one is Mistborn above Lord of The Rings. I have no words.
      But everyone has different tastes!

My heart hurts from your Dragonbone Chair ranking 😭 lol. I think based on that, and how highly you rated Mother of Learning and Brando Sando, despite acknowledging they're both badly written, that you won't like Sword of Kaigen btw. It's got basically no plot and is pretty much entirely about the characters.

I will say that I really did love Realm of the Elderlings, which is also prose/characters > plot - so who knows!
