I've Owned A 2021 Ram TRX For 6 Months - But Is It REALLY The Apex Predator Off-Road Truck?

  • ( tfltruck.com/ ) What better way to celebrate six months with the Ram TRX than to take it on an off-road trip! But there's a burning question we need to answer: Is the Ram TRX still the undisputed king of off-road trucks, or is the honeymoon period over?

Good to know that 6 months of ownership it has not had any issues. But then, one would expect 0 issues with a brand new vehicle for at least 3 years unless one is purposely abusing it past its design limits.

11 mpg actually doesn't sound to bad. I had a 2wd Regular cab ram in college with 5.9 engine and it got 11 mpg. Granted that was 20 years ago, it was also a much lighter truck with smaller tires and 2wd.

Loving mine! Coming from my C8 and Tesla P100D, this truck is good at everything! Hauls 5 people in comfort, can hang with a lot of fast cars or flat out beat them off the line, it can tow, it can haul stuff around. But the MPGs do suck. My C8 for example easily gets 30MPG cruising on the hwy, or 18MPG city.

It did a little better on the highway….17-18 MPG. But with an added Borla exhaust, I gotta tell ya, its hard to keep your foot off the pedal. They sound SO GOOD. Beautiful truck Roman. Looks and sounds great.

If you correctly set up the side mirrors, no vehicles have blind spots..., the problem is most set them up to look down the side of the vehicle, which is always there! What appears in the right of the rear view mirror should appear in the left of the side mirror, then before that vehicle leaves the side mirror, it will appear beside you. It does take time to get used to but it does work.

As a truck it's fast for sure, and everyone can respect that, but personally what i don't respect is the title of Off-road King that was given to this truck simply because of that, nothing it has done has surpassed the Raptor in the context of the Off-road King title, let alone some even tend to say the title "Super Truck" doesn't exactly fit here either.

Just in case its not clear, the RAM TRX is a play vehicle. Its not meant to be practical or fuel efficient, its mean to have fun in, but still more practical than a pure sports car. After all, when you go out to dinner you don't consider that you can eat at home for 1/3 as much. Going out is a about the enjoyment, irrespective of cost. In any event, when it comes to rock climbing, it really could use that forward facing camera.

I disagree with Tommy’s opening statements on power and perception. More isolated than a Challenger or GC Trackhawk, more refined, which could have some impact on viciousness quotient. However, from stoplight to stoplight, compared to Challenger and Charger Hellcats, TRX is faster. Tommy knows this, so be sure to dissect his comments.
Hennessy also did baseline testing against C8 at Texas elevation, and TRX logged consistently faster times in stoplight-to-stoplight framework.

I guess I am not too impressed. Webster is rated only moderate. We took my 19’ Raptor through Red cone (rated difficult to serve) both last year and this year. If the TRX can make it through there, then that would mean a lot! My girlfriend’s Santa Fe made it up Webster.

Nice, now we'll have every full sized truck in Colorado doing narrow single track passes, thanks. You know a full sized ram just rolled on black bear today right?

Great reviews gentlemen I love that TRX. I have one question, what have you been seeing on the TRX related to markup over MSRP if any...... The Banks Boys

Funny vid, because my Raptor has front and 360 cameras, proximity unlock, remote start and the rest of the stuff you listed as the TRX not having. It was $65k brand new. Your average MPG is what I got on a recent 1500 mile road trip towing a 5000 lb travel trailer. Unladen road trip MPG is almost 19mpg, some due to the smaller engine but also having a RWD mode. Desert running 450 vs 700 HP isn't really a thing, suspension and driving is what matters. I thought about taking crazy used market profit and getting a TRX but it just doesn't make sense for actually living day to day as my only vehicle like the Raptor does. I think it'll be the same with the Raptor R. I love the escalating race truck war, but I think they make way more sense as a second vehicle/toy rather than a swiss army knife DD like plain 'ol raptor.

I don’t understand when people buy a truck like the TRX and are concerned about mpg. You’re buying it for all the reasons but quality mpg.

Nice looking truck but that price tag is insane! In fact the price tag of most new trucks is stupid. I will stick with my 87 K5 Blazer which is more off road capable than this and my 2008 F250 for the hauling and towing capabilities that are also better than this Dodge, and the nice thing is they are paid for and I don’t have to make a payment bigger than my mortgage.

That's the beauty of America we all have the freedom and opportunity through hard work to afford what we want without having to justify the price. What is expensive to some is cheap to others.

Did they go down the tight switchbacks on the Grant side or go back down the easy Montezuma side? That's what I was waiting for the whole time was the Grant side to see how the truck handled the sketchy not very wide road.

I gotta say, as much as I love the TRX, I absolutely DESPISE the 1980s gear shifter. It's not actually attached to the transmission. It's essentially an 8-inch electronic button...which is ridiculous. Either put a manual transmission in it (which is what they should've done with a performance truck like this to begin with), or put the dial knob or column shifter back on there for the auto. Almost $100K!!! And they stick a cheap plastic shifter from their reject parts department right in the middle of the center console? Seriously?! The people at Ram really have lost it. Smh.
