Any character that allows him to chew it up and make it epic. It certainly is a shame he never got to be a hero protagonist in a film of his own. I could see him in a sarcastic, grizzled character of repressed heroic nature, someone containing a bit of Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino.

Matthew Quigley Buffalo Rifle Match is held annually in Forsyth, Montana and is a black powder cartridge rifle target match. It has been held for 25 years
And because of this movie Sharps rifle reproductions started being made after the originals had stopped being made in 1881. Shiloh even makes a model called the 1874 Quigley that has the option to be chambered in 45/110 so it matches the movie
Been there many times. Off-hand shot of the bucket is tough, especially with the strong wind from the left. 600 yd Octagon is my best.
We have a few similar shoots here in Australia. Including a buffalo shoot at 1600 yards and a bucket shoot.

I love this movie. It is a bloody shame that there are no reactions to it on RUclips but it is rather fitting that a girl from Australia is the first one to upload one. ♥️
Been a fan since release. As I expand my viewing history of reactors, it becomes apparent there is some hidden rabbit they chase and only in rare circumstances will they leave the safety of the 'circle of films' being watched by others and step up to the plate, returning to why we watch. Seeing the same movie reacted to by 10 others over a single week becomes tiresome.
I always loved Quigley's subtle flex at the end there when he name drops 'Bill Hickok' without adding the 'Wild' to it, implying Hickok was an associate. Marston let that slip right by him; he really should have thought it over!
I never noticed that. It’s interesting to think that Quigley might’ve known him.

Quigley is a great Australian western. Good to see the treatment of the aboriginal people was addressed and not washed over. They are great people! Tom Selleck was great and Allen Rickman was awesome as the villain! The one movie I can say Rickman wasn't the villain but a hero is Galaxy Quest. That's a fun watch. Thanks for sharing MC🍒❤️💛
Bottleshock is a small quiet film with Rickman as a co-protagonist (dual stories unfolding side by side and colliding near the end).
Native Texan here... The first white settlers in Texas, which was part of Mexico at the time (1820's), called themselves "Texicans." "Texan" didn't emerge until later in the 19th Century.
Just wanna add that the name Texas comes from Tejas, which itself comes from "taysha" which is a word for "friend" in the local Caddo tribe.
That part of Mexico was already called "Tejas" before white men (not from Spain) came into the area.

We have documents that say in 1606, 83 years before that meeting, the Spaniards had already known the Indian Tejas, he says. One of those documents is a map used by Juan de Onate, Spanish conquistador who passed through Texas looking for Gran Quivira, the fabled city of gold. The early 17th century map shows an area called Tejas to the southeast of where Gran Quivira was supposed to be. To Garcia Ruiz, this earlier reference to the word "Tejas" invalidates the idea that the word originated with Massanet's encounter with the Caddo.
Best line in the movie is Matthew Quigley tells the British major, " we already run the misfits out of our country, we sent them back to England".
Absolutely thrilled to see somebody reacting to such a great film. Story, soundtrack and acting are all fantastic.

Speaking of Alan Rickman, you absolutely HAVE to add SENSE AND SENSIBILITY to the watchlist. He was so sweet and memorable in that film (and plays a good guy here).

You need to watch "The Man from Snowy River" 1982, it was one of my favorite Australian westerns.
Laura (crazy Cora) played the best friend of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.
She was also the best friend in Saving Grace
She had a big part in the American sitcom "Just Shoot Me"
And Nadine in the original Steven King's 'The Stand".
She was also Leroy Gibbs' Psychiatrist on NCIS.
She also played another great crazy in The Stand miniseries.
Quigley is more of an American western that takes place in Australia. It is one of the best movies made during the 90s, had a monumental musical score, and showcased an amazing depth in story telling through acting.
The Man from Snowy River is more along the lines of an actual Australian western. Also a great movie

Tom Selleck was supposed to be the original Indianna Jones, but CBS TV Network in the US wouldn't let Tom time off to shoot the movie, as he was under contract for the TV Series Magnum P.I. in the late 70s early 80s.
Harrison Ford played it well enough that no one else can be considered. Some actors are born to play certain roles.
Tom Selleck was signed for Magnum, P.I. before he could be offered the role of Michael Knight in Knight Rider. The Knight Rider role went to David Hasselhoff.
Had nothing to do with the 70's.
And because of the writers' strike that year, Selleck actually _could_ have done both Raiders and Magnum if he had known.
Harrison improvised a lot of Indy's dialog ("It's not the years Honey. It's the milage.") He also created the best scene in Raiders shooting the sword guy. Harrison also picked that hat the Herbert Johnson an Australian Fedora. Indy would not have been the same at all. Ya Harrison was meant to be Indy and Tom was meant to be Magnum.@@taoist32

A very good movie, and under rated. You wouldn't hear a pure accent at this time, since convicts were still being shipped to Australia from all over the empire.
Quigley's weapon was donated to the museum in the Bass Pro shop in Springfield Missouri. It is displayed prominently. The museum is free.

A little-known film called Truly, Madly, Deeply stars Alan Rickman as the protagonist. It's a romance and I highly recommend it.

Laura San Giacomo had been in some other movies back in the day, and had a small but stand out part as the friend in "Pretty Woman", which brought her attention, and I'm kind of guessing that this was the biggest movie she had. I've always loved her in this. After this, she started in a sitcom for some years, called "Just Shoot Me". I don't know if she's done much in a while.
Tom Selleck was actually the first choice to play Indiana Jones, but he'd already committed to do a TV show, that he wasn't even sure was going to happen, but he decided to stick to his word, and turned Indiana Jones down, and the show ended up being "Magnum P.I.", which was a huge hit in the 80s, and made him very famous, and he was the super hunky guy that all the women were crazy about back then. Since then, he had done other movies, had a recurring role on "Friends" as Richard, which kind of revived his career, and he has a cop TV show now that's doing well, I think.
I have a random second hand story about him from the mid 90s. Some friends were driving down one of the curvy canyon roads here in California, on a rainy Halloween night, and their car slid off the road, and ran into the fence of someone's property. The owner of the house came out, and it was Tom Selleck. They were kind of freaked out, and very apologetic, but he was very cool about it, and just told them, "Eh. Don't worry about it. It happens all the time. It's fine." According to every story about Tom Selleck that I've ever heard, he's genuinely a very down to earth good guy!
Laura San Giacomo was great in The Stand as well.
This was the first film I saw Ben Mendelsohn in. Only later seeing him in the credits while looking at his work history did it click.

Farscape is one of my favorite scifi show. It was filmed in Australia. It had a slow and rough first season, but it slowly grew into one of my favorites.
Farscape was always on the verge of being cancelled. With Star Wars monopolizing all the FX and sound stages.

If you're looking for a good Alan Rickman movie where he's not a villain, you should check out a movie called Bottle Shock. It's not really a hero and villain movie. It's, loosely, about a British wine connoisseur, a bunch of California winemakers, and a French wine competition back in the 70s when French wine was pretty much the only wine thought of as being worth drinking. It's more focused than that, but those are the broad strokes. Alan Rickman, Chris Pine (Star Trek), Bill Pullman (Independency Day), and Eliza Dushku (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) are the most recognizable faces you'll see. Great movie with an excellent cast.
YES! Finally, been requesting this for ages! Love this film! It does make Aussies look like the villain and the American being the hero in their homeland, as an American, I still love this western! A unique concept! RIP Alan Rickman!

Kind of funny to realize both "Quigley" and "Crocodile Dundee" are both fish-out-of-water stories. In a way, Australia let us borrow Paul Hogan, in exchange we let them borrow Tom Selleck. It seemed to work out.
If you still want to watch westerns. Highly recommend Dances With Wolves, Open Range, and the series Lonesome Dove, and The Man From Snowy River ( Australian Western)

One of my favorite movies ever. I was 20 years old the year this came out and I knew I was going to love it within the first five minutes of the movie. The story, the cast, the characters, the musical score and the beauty of Australia. Australia was one of the places I would love to have gone to while in the Navy but, sadly, it never happened. I grew up watching Tom Selleck play the title character in the 80's TV series Magnum, P.I. As for Laura San Giacomo, I have seen her in the movie Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Aside from Cora, one of my favorite performances by Laura San Giacomo was in the role of Nadine Cross in the 1994 television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand.

When this first came out, I guessed that it was a sequel, similar to "The Rescuers Down Under." Eventually figured out that it was a stand-alone.
John Hill told me that he sold this script to the studios in 1975, but it took them until 1990 to actually make it.
Tom Selleck goes way back. He was the star of TV's "Magnum, P.I." from 1980-88. He had a choice of doing that or being Indiana Jones. Since then, he's done American Westerns, cop shows, miscellaneous dramas, even a few comedies.
Hard to think of Alan Rickman playing a hero character. But he's "decent" as Col. Brandon in the 1995 version of "Sense and Sensibility."
True! It was originally going to be a Steve McQueen project, but he passed away and it got shelved until the Australian movie boom in the late 80s.

Quigley is wielding an 1874 45/110 Shiloh Sharps rifle. Mighty fine buffalo rifle! And, you can reload it much faster than a .50 caliber Hawkins cap and ball rifle.

@@shawnmiller4781Shiloh still makes the Sharps rifle using the original molds. They made the one used in the movie. They cost a little more than three thousand dollars and it takes 30-36 months to get your order filled.

Thank you for watching this movie. It such a great movie. When you truly find out what happened to Cora and Matthew realizing why she is the way she is he falls for her and she still loves him.

It's definitely a more gritty watch, but you should watch The Proposition (2005), another underrated Aussie western.
Another is The Tracker (2002).
The Proposition was written by the musician Nick Cave and stars Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, and Emily Watson. It's well worth a watch.
Quigley turning his horse around to take one last look at Cora was a touching moment. He obviously remembered what she had told him about Roy.

I watched a lot growing up also. My father loves westerns and when he likes a movie he can watch it over and over. I grew to love them myself. Crossfire Trail is another Tom Selleck western I always liked.

Tom Selleck starred in several westerns. The Sacketts (1979), The Shadow Riders (1982), Quigley Down Under (1990), Last Stand at Saber River (1997), Crossfire Trail (2001), Monte Walsh (2003). He stars in the tv show Blue Bloods.

1983. "The Thorn Birds". TV mini series based on a book by Colleen McCullough. Set in Australia. Stars two Australian actors, Rachel Ward and Bryan Brown. Very good watch. I read the book and watched the mini series.

My father would rent movies for us as kids, we had to rent the vcr player and everything. We had a family movie and when my mother and sister went to bed, dad and me would watch a war movie, James bond, or a western. This was one of them and he always enjoyed it. "The Man from Snowy River" will always hold the top spot in my heart for any Australian movie ('Mad Max' take your just-deserved 2nd place, but that's not really a 'Western').

This is one of my all time favorite movies. Never understood why it was not more popular. It was a family tradition in my household. If this was on the entire family was watching, no matter how many times we saw it.

Finally, Finally, FINALLY! Someone's watching one of my favorite westerns from down under (probably only). And it happens to be from one of my favorite RUclipsrs from down under, Mary Cherry. Thank you for watching this. Now you have to watch this 1985 Western called Silverado. You will recognize a large amount of the cast in this one. It's another one of my favorites.

This is one of my dad's favorite movies. His favorite line is towards the end "I said I never had much use for one. Never said I didn't know how to use it."
The sound track for this movie is incredible. it was created by the same guy who did the music for Conan the Barbarian.
My two favorite scenes were where Martson was gushing over his Colt revolvers, whereupon Quigley says, "I never had much use for them," which Martson interpreted as Quigley not being familiar or proficient with them. In the later scene where Martson gives Quigley one of his revolvers thinking he was going to "educate" him , only to be shot himself., is where Quigley delivers the most BADASS line of the movie. "Said I never had much use for them. Never said I didn't know how to use it."

This is a great film, a family favorite we watch at least once a year. Tom Selleck is such a handsome man and this is one of my favorite characters he’s been.
Mary with such a steady flow of top notch commentary. Said a lot (not a criticism) but it only added to the experience. I always like her excitement when a film takes place in Australia.
I will also say, there’s a billion movies out there and most RUclipsrs all react to the same and most common movies. I’d say 70-80 of the best films ever made still haven’t even been reacted to by anyone at all.
