Nice reaction good start! It is good to start with Queen because they do not block videos. Queen's best songs are really not necessarily the hits, Queen is also great to watch live, they have often been voted as the best live band. Dragon Attack live is quite good. If you like the more guitar rock sound, I suggest some early Queen (and late Queen). There are definitely a few Queen songs that will surprise you guys. Check out, Father To Son - Queen live at the Rainbow 1974 (The HD version) and Liar - Queen live at the Rainbow 1974 also See What A Fool I ve Been - Queen BBC version. For something very different you can listen to the lyric video, My Melancholy Blues - Queen (or My Melancholy Blues live in Houston 1977).
As for Dragon Attack it is a funk rock number written by Brian May. They refer to Mack, their producer at the time and The Shack a bar where they used to drink after recoding. I would guess the song about having a good time, after work, that is perhaps the dragon on my back. Brian May never took drugs, so it is not about drugs. They did not really have tattoos, but that was actually a good explanation of the dragon on my back.

That's some great info and we sincerely appreciate it! We'll definitely keep the suggestions you made in mind. Thanks for the explanation of the meaning of the song. It is a really good one that we both enjoyed and I'll certainly add it to my playlist. I strongly prefer live music to studio versions so I'm looking forward to hearing them live! Thank you for taking time to leave such a thoughtful comment and steering us in the right direction!

The dragon on my back is referring to Brian’s guitar. “Gonna use my stack” is referring to his stack of amps. “It’s gotta be Mack” is referring to their producer and friend Reinhold Mack. “Gonna get me on the track” is referring to the recording. “Take me back to the shack” is referring to the Sugar Shack which was a club they liked to go to when recording in Munich.

@@CoachCastTV FYI, It's part of a medley/there's a BETTER/LITTLE BIT LONGER version of the video that no one seems to know about: "DRAGON ATTACK" REPRISE VERSION... This longer version just does NOT cut off suddenly at the end, but continues a couple more minutes thru to the ACTUAL end of the performance segment.

Dragon on My Back. Can also be a metaphor. For working with the producer to finish the record. The Dragon on my back. Is the pressure the band feels / is under. To produce the next album. Quickly.

In my opinion, Dragon Attack refers to the experience of a recording session inside the studio and the pressure of business on the songs. There is a mention of Mack, sound engineer on the sessions for The Game (1980) and on some of the band's later albums.

Take me to the Shack refers to their favorite place to get something to eat while recording in Munich. The owner let them come anytime day or night. It's gotta be Mac refers to their producer. Freddie and John Deacon, the bassist, became Godfathers to one of his sons, who was named John Frederick. The guys used to spend tome at Mac's home emjoying being in a family environment. Mac's wife had said it took less time from conception to birth than to finish the album they were working on. It turned out that she was correct. Brian May's "red special" guitar, which he made from bits and pieces, including part of a fireplace mantel as a teen with his dad, is believed to be the dragon on his back and the pressure of finishing an extended time finishing the tracks for the album. They did a lot of innovative things musically and with lighting to make the stage performances more exciting. During the live performances. At Montreal, notice when they said take me to the room where the reds are red, the lighting washed the band in red, the same with green. All done with an engineer able to control them in time with the phrasing, and all brand new to stage performances. A lot of that innovation was due to John Deacon who has advanced degrees in electrical engineering and who created the one of a kind amp, called the Deaky amp, that allows unreplicatable sounds from Brian's guitar. Brian was recently knighted by King Charles and has a doctorate degree in astronomy and has contributed to NASA, specializing in 3 dementional photography of the universe. All 4 band members are creative musicians, lyracists, very intelligent, and highly educated. Freddie's degree is in graphic design and fashion, and Roger has a degree in biology. Together, they are Queen, and the only band whose members have each written hit songs and are in the Song Writer's Hall of Fame individually.

I love this song and the bassline totally rocks, John said it is his favorite song to play live. Brian really lets it rip on the guitar, too. This song is so much better live. Brian wrote this so I am wondering if he is referring to his guitar as the dragon or maybe it is just the music business in general. Brian never took drugs so I don't think that is what it is about. Great choice for your first reaction.

As an avid Coach Cast TV fan I thought I should come back to where it all began and at least familiarize myself the formative years of a future YouTubing great. To give you some idea of the significance of Queen in my music life, my first car (a 1966 Triumph Herald which I owned for 10 years) was dubbed Fredrick in honor of Mr Mercury. The girl who was to become my fiancé was such a huge fangirl, she named my car on our second date. Although I was very familiar with Queen, those years are signposted with Queen albums, Queen DVD's (VHS's) and Freddy biographies and yet I too was unfamiliar with this track. Not much of an opinion on the song itself but obviously some great guitaring.

For a first reaction to Queen, you already showed taste and insight. Sorry, I never saw this until now,
BTW Roger has listed Dragon Attack as one of his favorite songs from Queen’s catalog but noted that it was very hard on his right wrist.
Most of the Dragon Attack track evolved from a jam session the band had at the studio while they were probably very drunk. That's how the basic loop of bass and drums was created. Then Brian added lyrics and melody, the latter being surprisingly similar to "We Will Rock You" (try comparing the lyrics and rhythm of "Buddy you're a boy make a big noise playing in the street" to "Take me to the room where the red's all red").
The song appears to be about addiction. Some believe it is about hard drugs but I think it is about Brian's "addiction" to music.
Truth is, there was no deep meaning. The song was more about the groove and melody than the lyrics. They were in Munich recording with Mack,. got drunk and just began jamming.
    Brian mentions the studio,:
    "Take me to the room
    Where the beat's all round
    Gonna eat that sound
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah"
    Also his amp stack:
    "I'm gonna use my stack"
Of course, Mack (Reinhold Mack), their German friend, producer, and engineer gets a mention:
    "It's gotta be Mack"
Also, the Sugar Shack (a place they would go clubbing in Munich) is referenced:
"Take me back to the shack, shack"
And any reference to "she" is his Red Special guitar. The dragon on his back was literal:
    "She don't take no prisoners
She gonna give me the business
Got a dragon on my back
    Hey it's a dragon attack"
    In vino veritas...
BTW - The Queen song that I listen to on those mornings that I am just having a hard time "getting going', is "Breakthru". There is no live performance of Freddie performing it since his illness made live performance impossible at this point but the video is definitely worth watching and listening to -- ruclips.net/video/CEjU9KVABao/видео.html.
Warning - it does start slow with a "mystery woman" who is supermodel, Debbie Lang, Roger's girlfriend at the time and mother of his three youngest children but quickly switches to take you on a rock 'n roll train ride.

My suspicion is that it was based on a video game that was out at the time called Adventure. It had rooms of different colors, castles (shacks) and a dragon chasing you wherever you went. When it would catch you, it would eat you and make a sound. You controlled it with a joystick (gonna use my stack). Mack was their engineer at the time and my suspicion is that maybe he was the one to beat (it's gotta be Mack). Look up Atari Adventure and check out screenshots and or videos of the game and it kind of all fits...
