  • Brooke Shields is now sharing a video from the hospital showing her agonizing recovery as she learns to walk again after she says she suffered a disastrous injury on a balance board. The 55-year-old actress had to have seven metal rods implanted in her leg, after she says she snapped her femur. She says she also came down with a severe staph infection that required emergency surgery and three blood transfusions. #InsideEdition

I wish her well in her recovery. Scary that she got a staph infection and had surgery. My 83 yr old Dad broke his upper femur. He had excellent bones & they put a rod in his femur, and he recovered quickly. He had some rehab, but the healing was pretty fast for someone his age. The key to his recovery was his bone density. He did physical, load bearing, outdoors work and that does strengthen your bones naturally. So, exercise and strengthen your bones if your job is more sedentary in nature. Be Well Brooke !

I was in a new upscale suburban Jr.High during (7,8, and 9th grade.)
Several of us started a ski club that met periodically after school to ostensibly develop our knowledge and skills that we would hopefully then apply to skiing better outdoors.
One of our gym teachers was an accomplished skier for the times and he oversaw our attempts.
The ONLY source for technical skills information was the modest availability of ski magazines as there were no such things as videos ('62-'65) available to watch.
    Ski technology was very elementary.
We obtained a couple of "bongo boards" as they were known back then to gain more skill in balancing.
The skiis, boots and bindings were pretty primitive. Also public ski hills were scarce plus having transportation in the mid-west to and from local hills.
One had to have willing parents who also skied.
So I skied from 6th grade the rest of my life and corrupted my children including my son who was a varsity racing skier on his high-school team.
As luck would have it my sister married a native of Boulder, Colorado and they married and have been living, skiing, hiking, camping etc. in Boulder for the last 45+ years.

I think we would always use the cushion. Looks like surfing but that can be so dangerous now too. Love the cushion solution!

Am I the only one who is thinking about Brian Regan? He needs to visit Brooke.

I had a very good, older physio therapist push this exercise for balance/knee building strenght as I'd ripped my meniscus/had surgery, I finally vetoed it, how I hated trying to balance, poor Brook, now you know!
