We would sign. Of course not to anyone. But we are at the place right now where we are working on next to 0 Budget so it's a very gradual progression. So I think a deal would definitely project us further faster.

Well, it depends. I like the idea of being independent because I have complete control, but at the same time, having a label to offset some of the workload so I could focus on my music more sounds good too.
Also, Adam, I just finished a book that I think is worth checking out. It's called Spray Paint The Walls. It's a biography about the punk band Black Flag. It talks pretty extensively about how they did everything themselves. They promoted themselves. Started their own record label. Booked their own tours. Even if their music isn't your thing, reading about a band with that kind of DIY mentality is inspiring.

I would prefer to remain independent, for sure. A lot of the music I create has actually been difficult to get past the distributors and on to the actual market. They always seem to have some kind of issue with my music like, my album covers being to explicit, song subjects being too anti-establishment, and even an outright denial of my music because someone did not like the distortion in my guitar. Adding a label to the mix will only further complicate my song writing process and trying to get it past them. I remember when I got an email from the U.S. government asking me to delete all living records of one of my songs because it approached a point where I addressed overthrowing the Republic aspect of the American Regime while also drawing the dots of our position to that of a prison inmate being violated. All things being said, I write dark music with dark themes that is not very radio friendly. I want people to hear it and understand it but I am blocked by the corporate aspects of the music industry that which I wish to work to tear down forever and keep freedom of speech in our music.

I've been producing for over a year and have been singing my whole life. I seriously don't know what I'd do without music. While I'd rather stay independent MAYBE, being signed to a label would still be cool I think. I just want to spread a message and give people a voice they can rely on with my music. I LOVE my craft and I truly do believe in myself. I believe that I can make a difference. Thank you for these videos, Adam.

I would rather stay independent, at least until I get to the point where labels are looking for me and I can sign for a deal in my favour, but even then, I think if I'm at that point, I can keep going on my own, so I guess it just depends.
    Thanks again Adam.

This video summarized why you have to already have an audience and basically be independently successful or else a label won't sign you. That's absolutely false. There are interviews, such as with the A&R of Atlantic Records that says they sign people without an audience who have legitimate talent. Your video is wrong, and you are just shilling your website to make money. Don't act complacent when you are making videos with factually incorrect information. If you really cared about helping people to get signed, you would give them an option that isn't winning a popularity contest in a social media algorithm. What's the point of getting signed if you already built your brand? There is none. The label makes a 80/20 split so you can obtain an audience through their networks and sacrifice your profits to them. So confused why this video is saying you can't be successful without social media, when there are so many people with 50k followers and more. None of them are getting signed just because people tell them they have a cute dog in their personal life posts.

They just say that because they know they will receive hate if they straight up say “we care about your internet followers”. So that’s why you see all these a&rs saying that. But the truth is, they care a lot about followers, it separates you from the crowd

I rather be independent with a little bit of fans than be signed to a record label. I rather do everything on my own. Now I only get 700 plays per month for my music, but I rather grow my fan base on my own. 7 years in the Indies and been producing for 11. I made it on 10 compilations and a mixtape and won 2 awards. I appreciate what you teach. I'm not that good at marketing, but I like learning more and more. I feel like doing it on your own is more rewarding than the 1% that were handed the deal. Also, as a music producer in EDM. I like full credit of the whole music project. I don't need song writters and ghost producers. I learned everything on my own. Don't mean to diss pop and the one percent that get signed, but everyone else is doing the creativity for them. I rather be independent doing it on my own. Sorry for the lengthy post. Much respect for you Adam.

I’ve been writing songs for the past 3 years now. I’ve always wanted to be a singer. Like since I was a child. I’m 23 now and it frustrates me that the desire to actually be a singer just won’t go away. Not because I don’t want to obviously but because of exactly what you’re saying about wanting to success but only having enough energy to create and not sharing not networking not wanting to take the time to plant the seeds and watch them grow. I keep waiting for my movie moment where I just magically stumble into the right person that will just hand me the platform and success . So I really needed to hear this. I think since I’ve been so private and in hermit creating mode I’m afraid of putting myself out there. Any sort of creation is so personal it comes from your soul so to put your soul out there for people to judge to face rejection and criticism scares me a little bit. But we also live in a time where so much is being created and put out into the world like you say so many people that are probably more talented than you and I that the thought of trying to play the numbers game with tons of people with the same dream as me is overwhelming. My dream didn’t include all the hard work lol . But I’m taking this as a reality check

My bf just recently got signed in the last 6 months .. For a company that makes music for RUclipsrs we will say 😉I've been watching you since this happened.. This video was the best advice as per usual.. I'm still trying to get him to use his networking more 🤣 And, in the same style as you.. He just posted on Facebook yesterday.. Explaining to people to stop with the excuses & just do it no matter what!! Where we are from.. People are lazy & expect the world, as I hear it happens more often then not lol He recorded non-stop sometimes more then 24 hrs straight in a basement on a crappy MacBook& some cheap mics & used our phones to shoot IG videos etc ! He took the opportunity for himself & it worked☺️He still is and, will be continuing to work himself harder then anyone I've ever seen. It's inspiring for me to see.. Your advice helps us both everyday(I'm not a musician I do visual art)Thanks man 👍 You definitely, speak truth as always!! 🙏

Regarding networking, as a harmonica player (among other things) I'm on a few different harmonica forums. I recently _asked,_ "Is this an appropriate forum for a bit of self-promotion, within reason?" One admin said, "That's not really what this group is for," and I said, "Fair enough. I can respect that." Three other admins, however, basically said, "As long as you don't start to take over the page, show us what you've got." Since then, about once per week, I have shared a video to those forums, AND...having shown respect for the forum that said no...I have drawn positive attention from some of _that_ forum's members, too. Forums are a great way to network because, (A) the people there all share a common interest with me...or you...and (B) by frequently engaging in conversation that _isn't_ about me, we become friends who are more likely to support each other when that album drops. I didn't set out to network this way; I just found myself in a situation of opportunity, and...having built relationships with people...found I had already created a welcoming audience.

I think it would be nice to ultimately sign to a record label (whether it'd be a niche, an indie, or a major), but I don't think it's good to wait until that happens to release music you're passionate about. Regarding who I'd wanna sign with, one good label that I can think of would be Hopeless Records, an indie label that signs artist that play mainly in the rock and alternative categories. And as far as I'm concerned, they let their signees pretty much be themselves. Bands like Avenged Sevenfold and All Time Low actually became very successful in that community when they were signed to Hopeless

Cool video, I think this is great to show new artists what attitude for networking and community matters. I think for a lot of people who have been doing it awhile they understand this, but feel like some things like photo shoots etc. wont pay off if theyre a nobody or have no audience for that and are unsure what steps exactly make sense to rake next

Labels want you to do 90% of the work so they can more easily bring you to market. Fair enough! At that point, you might as well keep owning/doing it yourself with a booking agent here or there to make things more manageable. I could be wrong. I've been out of the game for a minute. The "Superman/Superwoman" approach to the modern musician who does everything to bring themselves to market is here to stay... at least for now. When you say that people who are negative won't make it, it's true. The trick is that smart musicians take that negativity and direct it towards some political issue. You can be negative, but only negative about the world/politics/(insert issue here). It's almost like every musician is required to have some crusade or another, (Almost always in support of some party... cough democrat). Thanks for your video Adam. I'm a new subscriber!

Truth is. Save up or get someone to invest $20k or more into marketing your brand online and on the streets. That's the reality. Really $100k if you really want to be major. And you better be talented and have a sound and look. Anybody can upload online. Doesn't mean anything if you have no marketing budget. That's the sad truth.

    • @adamivy

@@adamivy A major buzz. I've watched all the main hip hop artist take about that much and pay for music videos to be shot which does cost and pay to get it on sites, channels, influencers pages, radio, these are the things record labels do. And independent artist do and I know enough personally to know now and have met enough A&R. Don't get me wrong brother you can go viral. But we both know that's not everybody and these young artist need to understand this is 10% music 90% business and marketing. You pay for ads. You pay for promo. You still have to do the basics of releasing quality content consistently but that's only half of the job.

You make valid points. However, neither way is right or wrong. The object is great tracks / songs. Without that you have nothing be you a producer or artist. The audience will come. Write great songs! That's the key to success. Hit singles are undeniable. Mediocre music with a large following means nothing. The object is not the "Record Deal". You are the record deal. Labels are no longer necessary. They're dead. Nobody in their right mind is gonna sign a 360 deal. No thanks. Being independent is the dream every artists has been waiting on for decades. Embrace it.

here's the facts when you sign to a major record label: you act stuck up, always hangin' around your goons, beefing with other artists, you think you can sing or rap, your attitude changes, spending money on worthless shit, forget where you came from and who were your true friends nuff said!

AdamIvy this was amazing, and you are right, its about being true to your potential fans, interact with them, build a community, and staying constant.
I just finished recording an album, I managed to gather a few musicians, and I managed to start a band for the album called Cut the Berry. Our first single is going to come out on the 8th of May.
I was never a social network person, but seeing videos like this made me change, and adapt to whats needed. But I believe I have a question for you:
Since I started taking this album seriously, Besides registering music with PRO's, Distributors, emailing radios, blogs, magazines, I also created social platforms for this project (facebook, instagram), and as a individual I joined music groups, reddit groups and youtube channels with the purpose of trying to find and build a community, and hopefully find potential fans for my music. But I am not sure if I understand how to go from being part of a community to direct this community to pay attention to me and my projects. Any tips for that?
