I am 62; 63 in November. I am a singer/songwriter and have been writing original music since I was 14. I still do. I have made some attempts to get signed but did not. I still do believe there is a chance for me to something great but no label is going to take a chance on an old guy even if my music is excellent. This is the third channel that I have found here that makes sense out of this so I am subscribing. I am taking a chance to re-invent myself once again to see what I can accomplish. Excellent information!!! You said it perfectly "labels can get you in front of a much larger audience/opportunities". Record labels have relationships, when artist travel internationally there is a different way shows are done and/or music is sold (ie. some countries dont allow downloads only cd form). In addition, labels can assist with leveraging their relationships with booking agents to assist an artist getting booked internationally. Another thing that you mention is labels want to see how you are working before they get involved, if an artist has a lazy and/or mediocre work ethic before a label gets involved, it is a high possibility that the artists behavior will remain the same and/or get worse. Artist that work hard on their own tend to have a better respect for the process because they are involved in the process. Most importantly, its called the music BUSINESS and it involves ALOT of work!
Alot of artist will want to own their own companies some day and they will need to understand the overall operations of their business.

Batphink Reynolds lol its so easy for you to say that behind a computer. I really get amazed if it was so easy to do what Keys does then why aren’t you doing it??? Anyway, Why don’t you look up Alicia Keys bio and read just how hard she had to work to be where she is. Her first album was shelved by Columbia Records because she wanted to keep artistic integrity. They wanted her to loose weight and make pop songs but she refused. She ended up writing playing and producing her debut which is damn near unheard of. But she’s so overrated right? All of Dylan songs sound the same too (he loves Keys BTW) and so do the Beatles Bob Marley Sly and The Family Stone Prince Adele Kurt Cobain John Coltrane Rolling Stones Sade Evils Pixes Zeppelin Elliot Smit MJ Winehouse Norah Jones I could go on and on because most successful artist makes music that sounds the same. They find a niche that is mainstream and if they are smart they dominate the lane they do best in. Yes tunnel vision gets you paid. There isn’t any artist like Keys. She stays in her lane and makes millions doing so. She is a household name for some really inspiring music that is not the status quo. She is not your typical pop star. A record executive didnt create her. Her fame was from A LOT of hard work and “tunnel vision”

Well, there are a lot diy bands and artists out there that make and manage their merchandise, shirts, buttons, patches, etc. etc. sell there music, and fund there own touring and setup all their gear themselves, its a lot of work but ive know abd have seen many musicians become successful without sponsorship or mainstream media, getting paid gigs is when it all starts, you save, manage, go from there, if you are first starting out, you will play a lot of free shows, its exposure and if you're "that" good, you will get those paid gigs, you dont get signed over night unless you are rich, live in hollywood and got a cousin or friend in the biz, so work really hard or know somebody, pretty much, those two are your best options.

That doesn’t happen lmao. An artist cannot be successful without the resources a label can give. You couldn’t be able to create a stadium/arena tour without a label, because the label provides the money for the stage design, costumes for the artist (depending on the artist) and backup dancers, props, vocalists and live band, lighting and sound systems, video backdrops or interludes, all the things that make a tour successful. Lady Gaga (using her since she is a favorite artist of mine) didn’t get famous overnight. She had to play small clubs before she finally got signed to Def Jam, only for them to drop her before she even released Just Dance under her current label, Interscope, in 2007. She has her fanbase but she wouldn’t be successful without the promotion and resources from her label. This applies for everyone, too.

After being in business for 10 years in business as a music lesson studio, I've started a label to work with regional artists. Starting with setting up collaborative productions, I offer record production, mixing, cooperative digital distribution, promotions through my channels and my local music fanzine. I require associate artists to also perform collaborative tasks that improve the overall artist roster. It is a collaboration/team effort oriented label. I also have 30 years of live mixing and recording experience and 2 years of Ad agency experience. The issue I currently have and is expected that these young artists have a trust issue, they do not know me as my previous sound and recording clients did. I also work a full time job. and yes I am crazy for taking on more tasks but I am not looking to conquer the world, I am looking to help local talent reach their music career goals.

They sign you when all the market work is done :) And ones you sign they want the control... My advice is, never let anyone outside your project take control over it. That is, if you are in it for the music. Thank you this video though, it was a lot of fun to watch. When the A&R people and other music industry people start to show you a lot of interest, then just look at it as a sign of everything is just perfect and say; Thank you but we´ll wait... then keep up the good work and enjoy the ride.

Exactly what I said so basically this guy is saying u already have to be established as an artist with a good enough fanbase to be signed before they consider signing I thought the whole point of a label is to help u become established as an artist with promotion for ur music so your fanbase can grow. The whole point of being to a label is to give u a platform to showcase what u can do and get ur music out there more (mostly the music part).

Not sure I fully agreed with all the tips, but the one I liked the most was number 5...."Branding." I think artists don't consider this strongly enough when trying to build a name and get noticed. I definitely felt all the information fit for a band trying to get a major label. The Hack is a great idea for so many different projects and thx you for that. Once again, going away from this video with plenty to think about and absorb. You're definitely ahead of the curve. As someone who has been in the biz for 30 years rule one get your own music lawyer but ONLY do that if there is an offer from a label then have them get as much money as you can at the signing because most of the time that will be it! Unless your album sells millions of copy's but that is not happening to anyone any more even the well known artist.

Another thing is don’t forget to read your contract from top to bottom .. there’s too many artists out here signing contracts
without looking over them with a professional attorney . Because once you sign that contract you belong to that label till that contract is up and then you wonder why they get you screwed over 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I think artists can almost make more by touring, streaming services, and then bring the attention of record labels. The internet, streaming services killed good record deals. (unless you're a pop star or super dope raper, I think it's tough.)

It's still money that emerging artists can get!
In the past, artists couldn't get there music produced and distributed because it was just so expensive. Now any artists can do it from there bedroom and generate money.
      Pretty amazing stuff!

Might be wrong he might be saying at first that the resources you have like Spotify or iTunes for example isn’t something that is new to you in terms of resource,But with the record label, they have money or bigger distribution (or the millions of dollars as your loan due to them trying to invest in you as an artist to them).

As a newcomer u should establish your self as an artist, sell some CDs, play a tour with 500+ people, build other businesses and than talk to a major when u reached the maximum.
Then they will pay u instead +- 0.50$/cd atleast +- 2$/cd, which is as a major artist good but still worse than staying independent (3-5$/cd)
