- Section Hiking on the Vermont Long Trail - Appalachian Gap to Lincoln Gap.
For this backpacking trip, my dog Denali & I will be doing a 2 day, 1 night camping trip in Northern Vermont. The specific area we’ll be camping near is called the Stark’s Nest, on a section of the Long Trail between Appalachian Gap and Lincoln Gap, 40 mins west of Montpelier, VT.
For an easier read, check out my full blog post here: www.sintax77.co...
The Vermont Long Trail is a 273 mile, long distance hiking trail that runs the entire length of Vermont, from the southern border with MA all the way north to the Canadian border. The first hundred miles in the south coincide with the Appalachian Trail as well. I’ll be backpacking and camping just a short bit of the Long Trail - an 8 mile section in the North Country of Vermont on private land & the Green Mountain National Forest.
GPS Data for this trip can be found on my Trip Data Page.
www.sintax77.co...
Or in the blog post linked above.
Includes full track data for each day, and way-points for campsites used, water sources, etc.
Trailhead Used:
Appalachian Gap Trailhead Parking Area - 44°12'39.7"N 72°55'53.5"W
Large, paved parking area on SR17. The Long Trail South (which I took in the video) is on the opposite side of the road. The Long Trail North (which I didn't take) is located right in the corner of the lot, by the guardrail.
Trails Used & Itinerary, Day 1:
Park at the Appalachian Gap Trailhead
Take Vermont Long Trail South (located on the other side of the road. Look for the white blaze
Arrive at Stark’s Nest warming hut and grab some water from the rain barrel.
Note: Stark’s Nest is a ski hut. In winter, it’s used to take a break & warm up in between ski runs at Mad River Glen Ski Resort. While this is private property, it’s kept open & available to hikers year round as a place to break or camp for the night while hiking the Long Trail. There is a rain barrel out front for a water source & a composting outhouse is nearby.
Set up camp down the ski slope near Stark’s Nest
Day 1 Mileage: 3 miles
Day 1 Gross Elevation Gain: 1,501′
Day 1 Gross Elevation Descent: 283′
Trails Used, Itinerary Day 2:
Leave camp and head back uphill to the Stark’s Nest.

End at the ski lift area on Mt Ellen for a break and some views.
Backtrack out the way you came, via the Long Trail North.
Arrive back at the Stark’s Nest.
Breakdown camp, pack up and replenish water supplies.
Backtrack out on the Vermont Long Trail North.
Arrive back at the Appalachian Gap Trailhead Parking area.

LOL - starting to love the "cheeseburger" prize at the end of the trip! LOL 😎
Glad you enjoyed your stay here in VT
your pup is adorable, mine passed and I could never replace her
Have some family in Vermont. I've been there twice and always love the hiking. Such a beautiful state!
Always love seeing Denali!
Great video, something out of the normal is always nice to watch.
You need to get Sarah back out with you. I really enjoy watching her also.
"Mad River Glen...camp it if you can!"
Awesome video. Love the trail magic and the scenery.
Sintax!! Your videos are the best man. Always cranking out high quality videos. And it’s cool to see someone filming trips in the northeast!! Thanks for inspiring me (and im sure others too) to get out and hike, and even record the trips. I did the first section of the long trail a year ago and have been itching to continue ever since. Thanks for the awesome videos man!
Thanks, Soup. Glad you're enjoying the vids.
Didn't you hear that woman speak French on the radio? That was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard in my life jesus that was beautiful french is the best
Thanks for a great visit to the Long Trail. My family hiked more southerly sections of the trail, beginning near Bennington, VT.
Thanks for the pillow offer. Nice video.
Great snow effects!
Great video. Sounds like something I would do drive a long time just to check out a trail for a night.
Very considerate of you not taking the trail magic. Great character! A lot of day hikers pig out at some trail magic coolers. If you get a burn mark on picnic tables cut a piece of aluminum foil the size of the bottom of your pot and put it under the stove. The bottom of the fancee feast gets very hot obviously.
oh hai you
oh hai!
Another great video! Very interesting and informative. You and Dixie are my favorites 👣
Very nice trip Shawn as is usual it was very enjoyable. I have to add a fast food spoon to my kit.
Got me a pillow. Thanks for the head's up. Great video as always.
Nice, enjoy it!
I have made the two can stove with the wick, but now I rock a vienna sausage can with the carbon mat wick in the bottom. I punched holes a half inch down for the flames, and smaller ones lower down for air intakes. 7 grams or so.
Very cool. I think I actually have one of those cans laying around. I may have to give that a try!
Loving the views. Great Video👍
You ought to look at the Nemo Tensor. It has the new opening and is thick and comfortable.
So excited, You really rock. I just went to your site and downloaded the gpx file. thank you....
My pleasure. Glad you found it of use! :)
They should really just say “discounted pillow”. $10 shipping on a 2.5 oz product. 😂
i could go to amazon and get free shiping 😂
wait, shipping is 10!!!! fuggetaboutit
The cost of the pillow is included in the "shipping charge". That is a deceptive marketing practice.
Another problem with the "Outdoor Vitals" company is their email practices. They seem to be spammers. Even though I did not complete the form needed to receive the "free" pillow, they had enough info to begin sending me emails without my permission. I clicked the unsubscribe link in one email, but continued to receive spam from them. I just clicked the unsubscribe link again, so I will see if they stop spamming me. I will be saying more about it if they for a second time ignore my attempt to unsubscribe.
I mean, ten bucks still isn't bad for a decent camp pillow
2 for $20 not bad, Amazon has em $25 each
Great video. Thanks for the free pillow ink....scooped one up.
Liked seeing you break out the tent. Also excited to try out the pillow. Been looking at that company for a while now.
Had to comment super early cause I'm excited for another Sintax upload!! Will watch later though :D
Love the pro tip. Had to rescue a meal with a fast food spoon recently myself. Always keep them in the day pack.
Yep, well worth the extra few grams!
My old stomping grounds. I grew up skiing there and have done a similar hike up the Jerusalem Trail (you passed the intersection on your way to Mt. Ellen) just to hang out at the Starks Nest. The sunset over the Adirondacks is great from behind the chairlift as is the sunrise from the deck over the Whites. Glad to see they put in the rain barrel, used to have to go south to the above mentioned intersection to a spring. I also have a canine hiking buddy, a golden named Piper. Great video, also enjoyed the one from Zion!

My family has a hunting camp on Lincoln gap road. Really enjoy your videos man.
Hello my friend, thank you for sharing your fine video. I really enjoyed it. Denali looks like a fine traveling companion. Be safe out there. 🤗
Great view
Nice JEEP
Love VT- just drove from eastern shore, MD last Thursday and hiked VT140 to Rte 4, up and over Killington Peak. Leaves were getting close to peak.. great vid btw
Love the opening scene already. App Gap!! I’ve done a few bike races that climbed both sides of the gap. even won one.
Congrats! It's a beautiful area.
Enjoyed the vid and the great mountain scenery. Sorry about the wrong weather forecast and all the views spoiled on the trek out. Great find in an open building! Nice follow up on viewer mail. I missed the time on the second one on the concrete in the wind. But it obviously worked! I use OV 15 degree quilt, so I am going to pick up the pillow.
Great video. Just picked up a Kelty Salida 1 for my bike tour here in Vermont. Worked out great. Nice tent for the money. Missed my hammock thou. Good to see you out. Now have to go back and finish your other video. Take care, Al
Once again you created a very good video congratulations on not taking anyting out of the cooler for the thru-hikers excellent demonstration of the stoves I'm just hoping you did not put a burn mark on that table since you did not use something underneath it take care Awesome vid
Another great video. Waiting for cooler temps (here in Florida) to get out and do some solo hikes. Thanks for the pillow offer from VO. I find your reviews on products very helpful. I have purchased the hiking poles and battery pack you reviewed in your videos.
Osprey has to be the best go to in my opinion
Sweet! It's still on the ad but I'm looking forward to watching.
Where you had your egg brunch was basically Mt Ellen. The actual summit is a pile of rocks about .1 miles continuing south on the long trail. Just did that section about a week after you did. Went 184 miles nobo on the long trail before my knees kicked me off. I hammock camped most of the way. Love the videos!
brave little toaster the Appalachian gap road is not far away
We have had the same problem up here in the Pacific Northwest with break in to vehicles at trailhead parking lots.
That's a nice area up there. I have never hiked it, closest I came was the AT down by the Killington area.
Hoping that after hiking the Long Trail, when you stopped for a cheeseburger it was at Long Trail Brewery.
When you turned around, you were basically at the summit of Ellen. The true summit was maybe 50 ft down the long trail (viewless). I hiked Ellen and Abraham from Lincoln gap two days ago!
Awesome video Shawn! Great to see you back in a tent! I was just in that area last week it is beautiful. I grabbed two of those pillows there smaller and most likely lighter then the ones I currently use so looking forward to trying them out!
Nice to see the stoves got some use! I did this section last year (aka Monroe Skyline). We were hanging out by the ski lift, and they must be on a timer to move every so often because it just started going out of nowhere! We thought we broke something! Lol Just south of you was Mount Abraham, a bald Peak with 360° views. Had a real NH vibe!
Cheers brother!
I ordered the OV pillow after your Utah video, got em in the mail just in time to do a weekend trip. Really like em, am gonna have a flannel case made to fit though for winter trips. Really like your trips and i get gear ideas all the time, now to put the money INTO the gear lol.
Glad to hear that! A mini flannel pillow case sounds pretty awesome :)
Got my pillow 🙂pretty good
Sangean pocket radio! 😀
Went and got two pillows and a sleeping pad from your link along with one of thier sleeping pads. The website seems a little scammy but you seem to like the pillow so i'm gonna try it
Great video looking forward to it when I get home
Besides weather forecast apps, I use radar apps like Raindar. If you have internet connectivity on your phone, it will show where the rain clouds actually are and which direction they are going. Even if you have a huge chance of rain, radar apps can sometimes show where there are "holes" in the rain so you can plan when to take cover and when to make a run for it before the next wave hits.
Very interesting. I'm going to give that a try. Thanks for the heads up!
Thank you i ordered the pillow
That time lapse was killer...waking up to a rainstorm on the tent is a bummer but,hey your in the woods so who cares...
Thank you for yet another fun Sintax adventure! It’s cool to see Denali confidently mellow with age. How did he do going down the iron bar rock section?
Nice trip with Denali and maybe someday you will get a chance to do the Long Trail Thru-Hike! 😀 btw The new camera video quality looks good👍 Maybe someday we'll see you in Michigan! 🙄
Haha, some day man. Ok, I know you don't believe me, but it's gonna happen some time, lol
I remember recommending another trip out to Colorado when you were thinking about Michigan. My fault, but I would have picked Colorado anyday 👍😂 I'm looking forward to that video. Sara has some awesome pics from the trip on Instagram!
Hey Sintax. Love your videos, cant wait to see them when they come out. Ever think about coming down to Florida? We have the Florida Trail which is over 1000 miles long and it goes through swamps, prairies, forests, etc. May be a bit too far from you but one day...perhaps you'll be able to give it a try.
Well, they do have pretty cheap flights from Philly to Florida quite often... :D
Just happen to be watching this on 8.29.19. Weird coincidence.
Man, this was short hike compared to what you usually do. Seven hours each way was a pretty long drive for just a few miles in the woods.
Doesn't bother me. The drive is half the adventure, but to each their own. :)
Great video as always! Unfortunate that I can't have the pillow shipped to Canada :(
What about cutting the top half of your meal bag off so that you don’t need a long spoon? Looks like a fun time. God bless you. John
Yep, that works too. I still do that sometimes. Slightly messier, but gets the job done.
oh, dude. i am so sorry but that is not northern vermont. north central vermont maybe, but really not northern vermont.
i only mention it because you were happy to hear about what those blue tubes were in the sugarbush.
i live near here and have spent some time in stark's nest. it's cool to see you on my landscape.
Certainly ain’t the NE Kingdom ✊
@@blain5827 yeah, no. he's in fayston.
Hey man I'm new to your channel and I'm a native vermonter and was looking for videos where in Vermont to go backpack camping. Are you from Vermont? Great video thank you.
Hi, Shawn 👍🏻👍🏻 I was hoping to see some amazing views from the top but you can’t always get the perfect weather, it’s a great day just to be outdoors enjoying a nice hiking adventure. I would like to know what are those packs on Denali, I have been looking for a good backpack for my Lab Jase to take when I’m taking Jase hiking or just enjoying a day at a State Park. Thanks for sharing, enjoy and have a Great Friday !!! Danny
Hey man! I’ve been a fan of yours for years! Your first Pemi Loop video started it all and I’ve been following you ever since. Most comments I’ve wanted to leave were mostly fanboy type things, so I’ve restrained myself. I know you get enough of those... haha. However, I wanted to add to your t-shirt pillowcase idea... I’ve been using a klymit inflatable pad with an awesome Nemo pillow for a couple of years now and I love them both. However, with both products being made of pretty slippery material, I would always have troubles with my pillow slipping off the pad during the night. So a while back, I started putting my pad up inside the T-shirt as if the pad were a body with no arms. Then I tuck my pillow up inside the T-shirt and it keeps it from slipping up or off to either side. Works like a charm, adds no extra weight, and makes sleeping in a tent (I’m still not on board with hammock camping) that much more bearable. I dunno when you’ll be sleeping in a tent next, but give this trick a whirl next time and see if it works for you! Keep up the awesome work, man! It’s really been great to watch your page grow and I’m always eager to see where you’re off to next! Peace, Brother!
Cool trick, man! I'll have to give that a try. :)
Way to make the most of a rainy trip! I picked up two pillows for $20 not bad! About 12 hours left on that deal from the time I write this in case anyone hasn't checked it out.
It's all fake. I just went on now a day after you and it still says 12 hours on the Dot from when I signed on.
Hmmm. Well, still a good deal.
It’s a week since your post and the promo is still going on
I got my pillows in the mail (quickly) and they're totally worth it at 2 for $20
I just cut a few inches off the bag, obviating the need for a long-handled spoon.
First love the video as always. I live in the foothills of the ADKs and not far from VT and the Long Trail. Need to get over there.
Question what are you using for audio recording? Particularly when you’re a distance from the camera. Ie sitting on the concrete block eating breakfast. The audio is so clear.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I sometimes use a secondary remote mic, but in this case it was just some post audio production tweaking.
I knew dogs could speak french
Hello Sintax, noticed in the last few videos you changed your car. Nice car you have now
Great, looking forward to checking this out.
I agree with you with regard to trail magic: leave it for the thru hikers.
You called your gregory an Osprey i believe. Ik im late to the party lol.
So I wasn't aware of this till I was searching rei while watching this video but apparently toaks makes an alcohol stove. Its a bit spendy especially compared to the cat food stove but since you're into that type of stove I thought that I'd pass that bit of knowledge on.
I really enjoyed the video and all of your other videos. Question for you; do you ever think that you'll do Katahdin (Baxter State Park)?
I miss episodes when Mike was there
Vermont huh? I hear they passed socialized food programs that provide free pudding cups for every visitor to the state. Did you go with chocolate, vanilla, or swirl?
I heard that was just a cup of mud.
Hey Shawn, I'm a newcomer to your channel nd I really like it and needless to say I'm catching up on your videos. I was wondering about the pillow for free? Does the company do that on a regular time each year or was it a one time thing for you and your subs when watching this video?
Hi, John. Yes that was a limited promo that they did for a month for viewers, but they do occasionally have other specials like that from time to time.
Excellent video as always.... what pack does Denali have? Looking for a new quality pack for my pup.
Thanks, Mike. It's made by One Tigris. Details and link at bottom of vid description.
Great adventure. I subbed. question i have is how much weight were you carrying?
You said osprey buy I think you meant Gregory. Optic 48 right:)
Haha, oops. Good catch ;)
By chance do those guys sell the alcohol stoves they make. I'd be willing to try one.
I see youre using the optic a lot more. How do you like it compared to the Ohm? You take a bit of a weight penalty, but probably not enough to offset the breathable back???
What kind of camera did you get?
Love that Kelly 2.
A Jolly Hiker I’m not a thru hiker to the weight doesn’t bother me.
I would have stayed in the hut and made it like a scene from Race for your Life Charlie Brown.
Hey Sintax, would it be possible for me and my two partners to conduct an interview for our senior year project? Thirty quick questions to help us solve a problem many people have had to deal with: theft while traveling. Skype, email, phone call, doesn’t matter for us, whatever would work best for you!
Hey, man. I saw your e-mail this morning as well. Feel free to e-mail me the questions if you'd like 👍
sintax77 Awesome my group will get those sent tomorrow sometime. Thanks!
If anyone is interested in the free pillow, there is a $10 shipping and handling fee. Also be careful while making your order, if you reload the page or go back to the previous page you will be double charged, and if you click on any of the additional purchases it will immediately add it to your order. I have been charged a total of $100 and am currently trying to contact outdoor vitals and cancel one of the orders.
Update, outdoor vitals has responded within 20 minutes and already removed the extra charge with no problems, was not expecting that level of customer support. Also, great video syntax and thank you for the pillow offer!
I’ve been watching your videos for a while now, do you have any suggestions for people with shoulder issues . I had my right replaced and the left has some serious issues. I also had spinal fusion but, still want to section hike the long trail. What would be a good pack for a woman like myself . I am 57 years old
Did you find your Sea to Summit spork? I know Darwin lost his along the PCT this year, and there was much sadness.
Haha, yeah. It was back at camp ;)
What watch do you use? Can you do a review? I have been using Suunto Vector and Core for years.
I'm also put off by OV's claim that "shipping" is $9.99. For a four ounce first class mail including a padded envelope, shipping is under two bucks. Maybe they're allocating another eight bucks in "handling" and "overhead", but that's still bogus. Let's be honest, and just call it a heavily discounted pillow. The bogus "free" makes them look like real cheats. Even if they said five dollars shipping, I wouldn't have called it totally unreasonable. But $9.99? WalMart, Amazon, Ziplock....
And gotta come down to the pisgah national forest. The lost cove trail is a nice section.
Thanks, Chuckie. I'll keep that in mind.
Np
tryed to get the free pillow but it still will cost you, not cool
what kind of shoes are you wearing
What are the notches in the bill of your hat for?
Allows it to seal up against sunglasses ;)
@@sintax77 Thanks for the reply. Makes sense now that you say that.
What’s that orange thing on your backpack shoulder pad?
It's a Spot Gen 3 GPS locator. I use it to send "ok" and "at camp" messages to my wife. amzn.to/2C5Ndr9
Great video...no keto today?
I been thinking bout switching to alcohol stove. Do they cook faster then the pocket rocket.
No, they're wayyy slower. The advantage is low cost, low stove weight, and scalable fuel.
Got ya
