Today on the channel, I drive a US-spec Jeep Wrangler on British roads. With the two door configuration we never got, this is a rare sight here - but I think the Jeep Wrangler in general is a car Britons just don't think about. Why is that, and why do I love it so much?

I am a landowner and I use a 1998 TJ everyday as a working vehicle. It is my 4th Wrangler since 1995. The TJ is not only the toughest and by far the most competent off-roader out of the box, (and that is from a family that has owned every Land Rover since 1948 including the 2nd privately owned Range Rover in 1969) but it handles predictably on or off road because it is front mid-engined. It has a chassis twice the thickness of a Defender and you can fix anything on it with normal tools and the 4 litre 6 cylinder engine is a total gem. Not keen on any model after theTJ to be fair though.
I own a farm in Sweden and recently bought a 97 TJ to have as a backup work vehicle, my Discovery 4 being the main farm vehicle, we love Land Rovers but this was a great price, I think you can guess what happened? Yes I fell in love with the TJ and now it is my main work vehicle!
👍, I bought my 97 Sahara in 1998 and still own it. It's been the toughest vehicle I've owned and I've had a lot. I am about to purchase the last year TJ (LJ) soon and really looking forward to it.
The TJ was the last to have the old AMC motor, just solid and basic~
I never had a Jeep until my late 30s. Loved it more than any “much nicer” car I have owned. Sold it for a high end sedan and then traded back into a wrangler 6 months later. They are not the nicest or most reliable but man they just become the vehicle you want to own forever.
Next time you're in the USA, get yourself to Utah, rent a 4x4 and drive the White Rim Trail - you will be absolutely stunned. Makes the Vegas offroad experience seem like driving around the carpark of a strip mall by comparison. Trust me - the White Rim Trail is a must-do experience for any petrolhead.
I am the rarity. A huge Jeep guy in England. There’s just something about them that gets into your heart.
American here with a 2-Door JK. Driving in summer with the doors and roof off is an incredible experience. It is unreal how much fun you can have going slowly on an dirt road, feeling that suspension work as your head bobs back and forth, feeling the front end pop up as you hit the throttle with those soft springs. Easy to be smitten....
My favorite British word ever: knackered. I'm doing my level best to make it catch on in the US, but no luck so far.

I live in Vegas, and I can tell you I am still staggered by Hoover Dam. I go at least once a year and walk out on the bridge. The context of knowing it was built in 1933 is what makes it so cool. The new bridge also steals the show as a modern feat of engineering. A great place to visit.
As a typical tourist, I hired a Jeep Wrangler when I was in Hawaii. It was heavy, a total chore to park and had surprisingly interior space compared to how large it was on the outside.
That being said, I would've chosen no other car to take up to the peak of Mauna Kea to witness a beautiful sunset. One of my favourite automotive memories of all time, and so this car will always have a place in my heart.
Why was it hard to park?
I am Australian. I have a 2 door JL Sport. I have never been a "car guy". I Love My Jeep! I bought it new now almost 5 years old. I also drive off road with my local Jeep club. In a car park if you see another jeep you have to try to park next to it. If you see another jeep on the road we wave. I have a Sunrider soft top and open it most of the time. Love It!
Being a British Ex-pat now living in the US, I can confirm that Jeep do have a strong pull and a strong following over here, however a US friend of mine who owns one, like to remind me that Jeep 'isn't a car, it's a cult on wheels. Join at your own risk' and he's right.

On an interesting note, there are many right hand drive Jeep Wranglers sold in the US for rural postal routes.
See them everyday up here in Maine. Those LLVs don’t stand a chance on fire-roads. Many communities that cant afford a dedicated Jeep or 4x4 Sprinter van will use removable RHD conversions on postal workers personal vehicles.

All Wranglers are 4 wheel drive and should be able trail worthy for Rubicon Trail (might need lift and tires). Mopar was not clear on what he was talking about.

I have owned a JK Unlimited for 8 years now, and love it to bits. Have had some good adventures in the mud in the mountains, and on the beaches here in Australia. I don't get the roof off much these days, as it now lives outside, but when it was garaged at night, I would have the soft top completely down for weeks at a time. Yes it is atrocious to drive on road, but it makes me laugh. A roadtrip across the USA in a Wrangler is definitely on my bucket list.
Rubbish cars with character and memories are what motoring is about. We hired a little Jimny and toured Iceland. Cramped, underpowered and noisy…..I absolutely loved it!
On a trip to BC and Alberta 8 years ago, I had the massive luck and privilege to have been upgraded to a 5-door JK Sahara by Enterprise instead of the planned whatever compact sedan they ran out of at the airport. Chauffeuring my parents around the Canadian Rockies with its many unpaved roads truly was one of the biggest highlights of my life. I really felt safer engaging the 4-wheel-drive at times, even, and in hindsight, while it may have been totally doable, going on the same roads we did in a Sentra-type car would have been absolute misery.
You are not mad. I lived in the USA for 20 years and had one each of the last 3 models. By almost every sensible criteria there are better cars, but none have made me as happy as my wranglers. I am now back in the UK and have exactly the same reaction to the pricing - however much I want one I cannot justify the price, and used they are still expensive. I really enjoyed the video and am delighted to find I am not alone in my love for this daft vehicle.
The pricing is brutal now, I was lucky to have a dealer thrown themselves at me with a car that had sat on their lot over the first COVID lock down… before any one realised what short term supply was going to be like. Worked out the good side of £40k, figure it is apparently nearly worth 4 years later. No way I’m selling though :)
My current 2 car garage is a fairly modified 4xe Rubicon Wrangler and a GR Corolla, and I absolutely love the variety I get from such a small garage. Both can act as suitable daily drivers, and both offer a robust entry into two very different sides of the same world of car enthusiasm. I do live in an area where I can take advantage of both cars, which helps. Full disclaimer, I also have an adorable little Super Cub to round out my motoring pleasures so those two don't quite pull 100% of the weight, so to speak.

I live in Los Angeles, CA...a Jeep Wrangler is a very good and practical choice, especially since the roads here are all gone to shit and the DoT doesn't fix them
I have a JK, I bought new in 2012. Always puts a smile on my face when I drive it. I had it off road-epic. But normally when I drive it, it’s just to enjoy the experience. Here in Ireland, sold yes, but super rare. They dropped the SWB, due to near zero sales. I much prefer the SWB, more in keeping with the Original. Parts are a nightmare, but ‘Jeepy’ in your country are excellent with great stocks.

I finally picked up my Wrangler JL two years ago. I wanted one ever since my teenage years. But as a practical daily driver or family vehicle, it just wasn't a good choice. Fast forward to 30 years later when my kids are grown and I want to get out onto the roads less traveled and it was time. I have a 4 door with the diesel engine (sadly discontinued). It's not a comfortable long distance traveler, but I don't mind. It will go virtually anywhere, its comfortable on short trips, the 4 door has lots of space with the rear seats down, and I love it. I wouldn't pick it solely for commuting or taking the family anywhere, but for me and my mostly remote working lifestyle, it puts a grin on my face every time I hop in the driver's seat.

I’ve owned every generation from the YJ, TJ, JK, including my current JL 80AE. All two doors! Is there any other?😉 I use them as my daily driver. I also use it as my fourth vehicle. It’s the only vehicle that doesn’t cause me any panic/worry when used as a daily driver. The step rails prevent door dings, the short length & exceptionally tight turning radius are appreciated when parking in tight spaces. The high seating is panoramic. The high side profile tires laugh at pot holes. The 2.0 Liter turbo is quick, and it’s rather economical at around 23 mpg combined! The upgraded stereo & electronic interface is actually pretty good! The HT is secure/safe… You get the picture. I added a Borla 2>1 exhaust for ear candy. Reliable? Yes! It’s great fun!
Hired one recently in California and took a 5 hr drive up to the mountains where it was snowing heavily and chains were mandatory. I didn't bother with chains, it didn't need them. It was the perfect car for the trip and a joy - even on the switchbacks it was fun enough. But for a hybrid, it only got 20mpg! and everyday I'm not so sure.

I’ve owned 17 jeeps and I could not live my life without one it’s not my daily driver and everyone that I’ve ever owned is heavily modified to go into the mountains, I’ve had the 392 and my most recent purchase is a jeep gladiator heavily modified and I love it, it seems every time I get rid of a jeep I last about two months and then go buy another one it’s the most versatile useful vehicle I’ve ever owned and here in California we have so many wilderness areas so I can go somewhere every week deep in the back country and jeeps are awesome you can make jeeps handle very well, The modifications are easy you can spend a lot or you can spend a little, but I agree with you they are extremely likable and so much fun. And when you drive a pick up truck and jeep all the time you never have to worry about curbs bad roads etc. I can go over anything and not worry about it, a car to me just a regular vehicle is useless at least the jeep can be used in many ways👍
I own a 2023 2 Door JL. Its road manners are much much better than the previous wrangler (JK) generation. Mine has a hardtop and does very well in the cold Canadian climate.
I live on the Hawaiian Island of Molokai. We're about 38 miles east to west in length, and approximately 10 miles north to south in width. We have a Buick Enclave (we purchased while living on the Mainland), and a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, also bought while living on the Mainland. There is no motor vehicle I'd rather own and drive here on Molokai (or on Maui, Oahu, Kauai or the Big Island) than a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. Great vehicle for the kind of use and the "fun factor' the Wrangler fills my heart and soul with. Thank you for your most interesting review of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited! Go to Vegas, rent car, drive to the meteor crater at Windslow. Make way your way back to Grand Canyon. Vegas is ok for about 2 days.

Off roading is huge in the US, but overlanding is getting even bigger in some ways. Taking the concept of off roading and extending it to camping and a planned destination with other people and vehicles involved. The kit people put together can be very awesome and extreme. These rigs will have slide out kitchens, tents on the roof and fridges... among many other good to have things.
Yeah, people have a lot $$ to waste when they could just buy single camping gear and some basic cheap storage boxes

I daily a modified 2008 jku in rescue green metallic. Yes its the most fun vehicle I've ever owned. Always a smile no matter what.
I have the 392 version which is bonkers. Jeeps have what most cars are missing nowadays... CHARACTER. Normal SUVs have become too appliance like whereas Jeeps still retain enough quirkiness combined with modern tech to make them more lovable and fun.
Never been to the states, but a place along the interstate 15 I'm intrigued about is Zzyzx, 50 miles before the border with Nevada, an abandoned town set up by a con artist as a health resort in the middle of nothing. The name was chosen to be "the last word in healthcare"
Another intriguing place is Salton city, on the road to Mexicali, an almost ghost town where only sand and rocks can grow due to the saltiness of the near lake. It was the inspiration for GTA V's Alamo Sea

I had a couple CJ-5’s back in the 70’s and early 80’s. They were basically a civilian version of the military M-38A1. It rode like crap, was drafty as heck, noisy as all get out and an absolute blast. Now I have a new Grand Cherokee Summit 4XE which is their Discovery fighter and it’s a sweet ride but completely different.
American car makers do better when they spend time to make the best American car rather than trying to copy, say, BMW.
Just stay in your lane and make the best you can and you will be fine rather than redefining yourself.

I love my Wranlger. It being unreliable and always needing attention gives me purpose. Something always needs repairing. And it's a great way to avoid doing chores for my wife.
When my wife asks me for example to do something important, I say "can't babe, working on muh Jeep!".
I have a Jeep JLU here in the UK. I find it a joy to drive and so much fun. You can pick one up a year or so old for a lot less than £60:000

Anyway. Jeep fans have the biggest most enthusiastic car culture. You’d be shocked. They leave ducks on each others cars.
I think that starting price is the biggest single problem with the wrangler. My dad used to get a generous company car allowance at work, and the penultimate car he got was a four litre limited se Cherokee, fully (all the options) ticked for something ridiculous like 30 grandi; 1995. He actually bought it at the end of the lease and kept it for a further five years. Never went wrong, pulled well, towed well, did 18 to the gallon whether you were hoofing it or hypermiling or towing, was comfy on a run and went muc( further off road than we needed - and believe me, there’s some really testing alpine tracks, it took them I; it’s stride in low box!
Back then, a top spec grand was also grea5 value, well under 40! And a wrangler well under 30 - friends of ours had a 4 litre wrangler Sahara, loved it. But 60 grand for one? Jog on jeep.
The US does a great job building cars to a cost. Unfortunately for UK consumers there is price gouging occurring somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic.

My daughter and son in law loaned us their double cab pickup jeep last year when we went over to see them-they live in Des Moines Iowa-we loved it. 3.6 litres, 8 speed auto, we drove across to see friends in Bozeman Montana, went through Yellowstone, down into Utah, across Colorado, Nebraska, and back to Iowa. We did just under 3,500 miles in 2 weeks and had a great time-my 15 year old granddaughter drives it to school now-they are allowed to drive at 14 In Iowa!!

There's always been a part of me that's wanted a 2-door Wrangler with the removable hard top. Just seems like a great vehicle to get you through the snow and then doff the top for a cruise on a nice day.

Nevertheless, I built a plethora of Custom TJ's back in the day. At least twenty of them were shipped to the UK. Even more were sent off to various countries throughout Europe. It is truly a unique feeling knowing that my craftsmanship is being enjoyed on six out of seven continents.

I daily an old TJ, and it’s honestly the perfect little machine for me. The gas mileage is horrendous, but the fact I can take my roof off, and glide through fire roads more than makes up for it

We in the state’s are blessed with the wilderness to help rationalize the purchase, me doubly so being from Colorado but even here it’s not truly required. I’ve been to places and traveled roads in vehicles as inappropriate as a ‘73 beetle that most local Wrangler owners wouldn’t dare. So even here it’s an emotional choice. I’m +60 and didn’t get my first Jeep until my 2012 Gladiator Mojave, more $ than all previous vehicles I’ve purchased combined, and before I bought it I tried to rationalize a new Defender. I wanted it and passed on it for all the same reasons you shared about the Jeep. All this to say it is how much we are all alike and not how we are different that is greater and more important. In our current state I think it’s important to illustrate and say that as loud and as much as possible. ✌🏼❤️😊
We always use Vegas as home base for various driving/hiking adventures. Red Rock Canyon (indeed, spectacular), Valley of Fire, Zion, Death Valley, Bryce Canyon…the list goes on. And if the mood strikes, you can just stay at your hotel, drinking the day away by the pool.
I own a 5 door JK and live in Kent. With an Apple Car Play head unit (with reversing camera) my Jeep is a joy to own. I’m 6’2 and I fit in it, it’s got great air con in the summer, and you don’t worry about pot holes, snow or parking it any where.
The Volvo XC90 I had before had so much electronic crap on it I got rid after a year. And the targa roof panel takes 3 mins to take off. If you want to enjoy simple motoring get a Jeep and my classic Porsche scratches the speed itch at the weekend. Did I say it does 32 mpg on a run?
This is my kind of thinking. I also have a Porsche for fun, and a Range Rover for daily drives, I’m also in Kent (one of the rural bits). I’ve been considering chopping the Range Rover L320 in for something with less electronics to go wrong 😂

I may have been a bit lucky Adam, but I’ve had zero issues and have just serviced it.
The Volvo needed software updates, and went into limp mode one too many times. I am really enjoying the lack of complexity and Jeep guys I’ve met have been great.

I have been seriously looking at the '96 to '07 TJ variant Jeep Wrangler Safari with the old 4litre 6 cylinder. May look to pick one up at the end of Summer. Not so keen on the later, more plastic JK. Love the idea of having the roof and doors off (as infrequently as the UK weather allows). They just scream fun to me.
I was a serial car changer swapping every 6-9 months… chopped an M240i for a brand new 2 door JL about 4 days after the first COVID lock down lifted. It’s objectively a terrible car but 4 years later it’s still here and going no where, I love my Wrangler.
The original Wranglers, along with the CJs that preceded them, were definitely aimed at the agricultural market like the original Defenders and preceding Series I-III. There were designed as a small, light, maneuverable vehicle to go out off-road for people like ranchers and farmers to check on their cattle and crops or hunters and fishermen to get out in the woods and streams. I own and drive one of the last JK models and previously owned a CJ-5, and I do use the 4-wheel drive frequently as I live in an area where it's nearly a requirement, as we found out on the couple occasions we tried going with a regular 2-wheel drive car. I've put on almost 125,000 miles on it, and it's had very little go wrong and never left me stranded.
The £60,000 starting price is astronomical. Over here in America, that's about what the new Defender starts at. I'm betting it has to do with a mix of import taxes and emissions fees, as well as the mention that there's no 2-door stripped down model like Jay test drove.
I had a TJ Wrangler, much smaller and even more primitive than the JL, and with the bulletproof 4L inline 6 that I think can trace its roots to the early 60s. Oddly, it was paired with a Mercedes-sourced 6-speed manual. The thing was great fun to own, and I never had to worry about potholes or getting snuck in snowdrifts. (I’m in Canada). At the same time I owned a Mustang GT, and going from the Jeep to it felt like stepping into a GT1 race car. Anyway, I eventually got rid of both for an ND MX-5, a far better sports car than the Mustang and a far better convertible than the Jeep.

Years ago had a uni summer job at a Jeep garage in the Lake District - valeting and delivering them around. Loved the Wranglers, such character. The 4.0 litre ones in particular were a hoot and felt surprisingly quick at the time - if not quite matched by the brakes and handling...

I love driving through Red Rock Canyon when visiting Las Vegas. However, I enjoy The Valley Of Fire even more. It's only 50 miles northeast of the Vegas strip and is absolutely worth the drive.
19:03 if im not mistaken, the torqueflite 8 speed is just a ZF 8 speed by a different name for use in Stellantis vehicles. Mechanically it should be almost exactly the same as any other lower torque rated ZF 8 speed.

I never thought of a Jeep Wrangler as a large vehicle. I used to drive a GMC Sierra 1500 Denali crew cab. I’m not even sure the GMC would fit on some British roads.
My 2024 Wrangler Rubicon is actually a very nice vehicle for everyday use! Drives amazing!

i like that this particular example is a 2 door, as all wranglers should be, the current 4 door model is longesr than most grand cherokees, it really doesn't work in many european trails that are usually driven in jimnies, nivas old defenders etc, good for posing though.....
In my opinion the best wrangler was the tj , there is something inherently brilliant about a car shorter than an na miata with a 4 litre straight 6

Very nice video James. I totally agree with you about renting a true American car. I had the pleasure of driving a red mustang down from San Francisco to LA on the PCH. Not the Steve McQueen mustang I really wanted but it still felt very cool. I also can’t forget my wife’s face when on another trip I pulled up to pick her up in a giant Cadillac 😂. Next time you come over to the States and rent a Wrangler, you should come up to Oregon and drive around in the Cascades and to Crater Lake. I think you'd enjoy it and find Crater Lake quite beautiful--the pictures don't do it justice. It's almost 2,000 meters in elevation with a gorgeous blue lake inside a volcanic caldera. You have to do it in summer, though, because there can be 3 meters of snow on the ground... unless you're in the Wrangler, which will handle some snow pretty well. :)

Always had a savy for Wranglers and even considering getting one here in Thailand, even though prices are even more outrageous than in Europe.
Problem is, that car makes total sense at $35.000 and no sense at all at 90.000€!

FCA/Stellantis did a wonderful job with the JL. I'm more into the 4cyl/8 speed auto variant as I find the torque curve of the v6 doesn't suit an Jeep, as you have to rev it out. Also one thing you didn't get to experience that I think would make people shy away from the soft top is highway noise. I've personally gone for what I think is the best of both worlds, a hard top with a bestop sunrider that folds back. For longer journeys, i pop the "freedom" panels back in. There is also the skyone touch top option for the price of a used clio.
Red Rock Canyon is superb, but Valley of Fire is on another level!

This may have already been mentioned, so pardon me if I'm repeating. Under contract with ZF, Stellantis builds a version of the ZF 8HP in the US, and it's marketed in Mopar products as the Torqueflite, which is an old Mopar brand.
I rented one of these in 2008 in lanzarote.
It was a 2.5 petrol.
We thought we would be cruising around in the sun with no roof and a decent sized engine....
How wrong we were.
Didn't have a roof at all, started to burn, that engine.....don't think it was capable of 60 mph 😂, the damn thing didn't even have a radio.....oh the disappointment.
Thinking back though, it looked superb in white, it was big and daft and I really enjoyed it and can see why it's good for what it is.
We found an off road gravel bumpy track and slipped it into 4wd and that's where it came alive.
If we had the weather and terrain in Manchester then I'd love one.....sadly we don't 😂
An American icon. Not a great car, but a COOL car. Talking of which.....yeah, I'm a Mustang guy (I own 2 LHD "S197" 5th Gen Mustangs).....and we went to Vegas for the Mustang's 50th Anniversary almost exactly 10 years ago. I don't gamble, and don't drink much but I agree, Vegas is an amazing place and it was perfect for a week celebrating our favourite pony car. The main event was held at the LV Motor Speedway, a HUUUUGE NASCAR stadium, with a drag strip just over the road. But we did rent a Mustang and headed out of town to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Definitely a vacation (sorry, holiday!) to remember!

I Love Jeeps. Owned three so far. But a Wrangler, I would own one if i could afford the house payment to buy one. 😊.

Even in the US now days, base jeep wranglers are sold for 30k when they're built like the cheapest cars on the road. It's not a good deal.
Here in San Antonio, Texas it seems there are more Jeeps and Ford F150 pickup trucks than anything else. My friend has a Lotus Elise, Alfa coupe, a lifted Jeep, and a pickup truck.
Just got rid of my 2019 Wrangler after 133k miles, a fee beach trips and 2 accidents. Was it impractical? Yes. Was handling terrible? Yes. But boy wasn it the funnest car I have ever owned. I will never own one again but I will have a special place for it,

Also, I maybe wrong…..from memory in uk you can spec manual, proper automatic, or automated manual….so be careful which one your buying.
In the fiat jeep dealership near me in uk, the good spec models eg rubicon cost around £44,000 (**used**)
