The significance of the tea house is that Kiku was speaking the words that Mariko could not, so by doing that, Kiku allowed Mariko to express her inner desire to John. Notice how Kiku steps behind Mariko. That whole scene becomes an intimate conversation between John and Mariko.
Kiku is such an amazing reader of people and she instantly saw the sexual tension between the two. "Anjin doesn't want to hear these words from me. He wants to hear it from HER."

I mean, this story is before GoT and HoD… based on the novel, and there was already a miniseries in the 80s. The whole scheming and murders were also based on a true story.
Thank you, this constant evoking of those shows to describe Shogun is lazy and tiresome. What is worst is calling Shogun the Japanese GOT or HOD. As you stated, James Clavell's novel was published decades before "A Game of Thrones." The novel "Shogun" was published in 1976 and "A Game of Thrones" was published in 1996.
It's just because that is what they are recently aware of thus the comparisons exist. Many know of GoT and HoD now and there is no point overlooking that regardless of how you feel about them. Regardless of which story came first the comparisons as a whole are quite apt because every human culture has done and is still doing the same things. The drama and political manoeuvring are inherently human nature. Leave aside the argument about which show or book is better and the pride of either fan base. One is better served looking at the human similarities.

It does matter which came first, because the claim being made is a chronological error that seems to assert that Shogun was influenced by Game of Thrones. It as silly as claiming that Macbeth is the British Game of Thrones. The implicature misleads people into thinking that Game of Thrones is the original template, thereby undervaluing Shogun in this case. Game of Thrones isn't the template for Shogun. It also suggests that Shogun is trying to emulate the success of Game of Thrones and HOD. That is, it is ridding its coat tails.

In an earlier episode a flashback showing the last moments of the Taiko speaking with Toranaga. Lady Ochiba was there and she shared a knowing gaze with Toranaga as he was leaving. Additionally, Toranaga is very close to the young heir as his protector. Maybe the true father of that heir isn't Taiko, and Lady Ochiba's ire towards Toranaga is in line with that. He does have many sons, but maybe only one really important one.
That was always my inference. The Taiko had never produced a son, and she was his last chance of producing an heir. Toranaga had several, so to increase the odds of a son and heir for the Taiko, they may have had a thing (which I think was insinuated as well by a character, but I could be wrong)
In those times, the catholic church's rituals were in Latin, that is why she prays in Latin. As to whether John did it or not with the courtesan Kiku... HE TOTALLY DID IT!! He was REALLY greatful the next day😂. With Lady Ochiba machinations, I don't want to spoil anything, but... Stay tuned...😏

John definitely went through it with Kiku otherwise it would have been seen as insulting to Toronaga. The whole conversation between the three of them was away for Mariko to speak her heart to him and make him comfortable with going with Kiku. Cortesans in Japan do a whole service in finding the man's desires and relaxing him and getting into his mind, not just the act itself; But John definitely went through with it.
I am wondering if you gentlemen have ever ventured into the films of Kurosawa. I think you would find a lot to like, not only from the stories but from his amazing film-craft. After this series is over I hope you will put it on your list

When they are speaking to one another on the show, you are meant to take it as that they are speaking Portuguese. Also, the first book in the Game of Thrones series was published in 1991. The novel Shōgun was published in 1975, and the first miniseries based on it aired in 1980.

Nice reaction as usual, guys. Just a little note: Mariko is studying and learning Portuguese for talking and Latin for Catholic prayers. In Netflix Shogun English language is used as replece for spoken Portuguese to avoid confusion for the viewers and too many spoken languages and subtitled on screen. During the first episode, when John and his crew were captives, He said to his mates: "Don't worry guys I'll set us free talking to these people with my fluent Portuguese". Tecnically John is always talking in Portuguese, when not trying to say anything in Japanese.
Because of the subtlety with which things are handled it is easy to misunderstand, Jhon was not Kiku, her job is to please and what pleases Jhon is to be with Mariko, and that is how it was.
A bit of a change to have Ochiba be Nobunaga's daughter and not his niece. The former Taiko and Ieyasu (Toranaga) hunted down Akechi, who failed to gather support after the assassination.
Eh, not Ieyasu so much. He had just made his daring escape from Omi through Iga to get back to his fief in Mikawa. He still had to gather his forces before going on the offensive against Mitsuhide. Hideyoshi defeated Mitsuhide at the Battle of Yamazaki less than 2 weeks after the Honno-ji incident. This period was basically a fight for power between the different generals and allies of Nobunaga after his death at honno-ji left a power vacuum. The person who defeated Mitsuhide, and therefore, avenged Nobunaga would gain legitimacy. So it was basically a race to see who got to him first, Hideyoshi won that race. After that he basically fought against other people who wanted the same, like Shiibata Katsuie (who Hideyoshi defeated at Shizugatake. Because of this, Ieyasu and Hideyoshi actually fought against each other initially, in what became known as the Komaki-Nagakute war, named after the Battle of Komaki-Nagakute, where Ieyasu technically won, but it was so costly that the two sides had to come to an arrangement.
I read the books many many years ago, but I have a vague recollection that after the night Jon spends tge night with the courtesan, she is very eager to spread the news that he is.....ummm...let me say it delicately ...a 'big' man.😏 That gives him a little prestige and therefore Caucasian men (in comparison to the Japanese men that were physically a lot smaller built) become intriguing to many...😁

Regarding Toranaga ordering Mariko to accompany John to the brothel, my take on this originally was that Toranaga was implicitly providing approval to Mariko to be intimate w John at the brothel. My wife disagreed...her take was that it was obvious to Toranaga that something was going on between Mariko and John, and by ordering her to watch John be intimate with another woman, he was forcing her to get over whatever she was feeling for John...for her to understand that he is not meant to be w her nor her w him and that was the purpose of his order to her. After watching E7, it became clear that my wife's take on it was correct.
This is show is full of nuance and almost nothing is as it seems. Important to know that the main character of Shogun in not John. It is told from his point of view, but this is Toranaga's story and he does nothing without reason.
In the book the farewell scene with Kiku and Jon happens without Mariko in attendance, but all the village watching. Omi appears and treats Jon rudely, but Kiku is impressed by Anjin-sama's manners and performance from the night before and feels shame that Omi had urinated on such an honorable man who is, in Kiku's eyes, correctly made hatamoto, one of the elite ranks of society. So to give Anjin a compliment and to wound Omi to the bone, Kiku bows very low to Anjin-sama, and then she holds the bow in full view of the village until Blackthorne is completely out of view for several moments. All of the assembled villagers begin to treat Anjin-sama much more respectfully, because Kiku is known to be the expert courtesan of Ajiro, and she has never, and will never, honor another guest with such a bow ever again. Mariko by that time is completely removed from the picture. There is a LOT more sparring and verbal fencing that goes on between Mariko and the Mama-san, Gin, which sadly doesn't make it into the adaptation. Really, some of Clavell's best and most sassy writing. Too many of the women of Shogun were actually edited out in the adaptation for ease of story flow. Omi's mother, for example, played a huge role in the beginning of the book. But here she made a joke about the quality of sake she should have put out for Toranaga's visit. More after you get to the end, to avoid serious spoilers.
FYI - in the book Blackthorn spoke English,Dutch Latin and some Portuguese. Mariko spoke Japanese, Latin and Portuguese. Mariko and Blackthorn would speak in Latin which came in handy when no Portuguese were present and they wanted to speak secretly. In the first Miniseries, you could tell when they were in Latin because speakers would use Thy and Thou instead of your and you. Great react - thank you for covering this story!

But Oak would love the lessons that are taught throughout. And as brutal as it gets, it’s beautifully written and shot😭❤️ has some of the best acting, and has to fall in my top 3 shows of all time🙌🏼 The Glory or this show on showtime called Yellowjackets (that you should also consider watching😅)
