- Sega Saturn on MiSTer FPGA is now on update all and while its still in beta there are still a ton of of best Sega Saturn games and Sega Saturn hidden gems to play! MiSTer FPGA Saturn core fun times! and the FPGA Core has been updated again! Bringing in some important fixes to some of the best Sega Saturn games! so let's do ANOTHER testing update video on the Sega Saturn FPGA core because why not! The ram controller has been rewritten and fixed up in dual updates!
and as of today we have a new core that fixes a lot of the MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn core bugs on VDP1 and VDP2 for games like Sega Rally, Tomb Raider and Panzer Dragoon Zwei! MiSTer FPGA review time! Just remember these TEST cores are not the same core you get in Update_All today! So let's do some more testing and show you some Sega Saturn widescreen content! now with more Nights into Dreams! and maybe soon a MiSTer FPGA vs emulation episode!
and if you need a MiSTer FPGA guide I have them on the playlist :)

I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
SRG320 just updated the Sega Saturn core with new code...AGAIN......so of course we are going to test the new binary and see how it performs. and now it's been folded into MiSTer Main and Update_all! Seriously...the improvements in performance and compatibility is a small retro gaming miracle! A LOT of games we tested previously have HUGE improvements and some new games work that never used to! and some games that STOPPED working on previous cores are now back and better than ever! Plus Burning Rangers has a seriously awesome improvement!
and now we have new working games that never worked before as well! Amazing. This is a core testing video with user requests! So enjoy!
This core fixes a massive ton of issues from the last Saturn core. Also make sure you update MiSTer main as there are some CD loading fixes in there that benefit Saturn!
and now it seems like more people that have older RAM modules / the four chip ram module variants are seeing more success running the current Sega Saturn MiSTer FPGA core too!
and game saves are here! Which is HUGE for the core! Because playing Sega Saturn in FPGA on MiSTer FPGA without being able to save your game was NOT easy!
So that means its time to test a new batch of games...viewer requests too!
Note: this is the current build of the Sega Saturn core for MiSTer FPGA and NEW GAMES WORK! but really its the save functionality that is the huge thing! Also this is a MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn setup guide as the core is once again manually installed and you need to switch to MiSTer Unstable Main vs being on Stable main...which I will show you how to do in the video!
This is part of the MiSter FPGA Sega Saturn testing series...but now with a brand new core build! So lets put it through its paces! Because the audio quality on the new core just sounds PERFECT...in spots!
Note; you may need to format memory depending on the game. See here vampier.net/Sa...
and thanks to Andy D!

It's Saturnday! The best day of the week!
The Sega lords day
Point and clicks were my jam in the 90s on my first PC! Loved them, especially all Lucas Arts games and Space Quest and Larry series from Sierra, but also Myst and games like Myst. Also some of my favorite games in the genre were from Legend Entertainment, they had their own style of adventures usually based on fantasy and sci-fi books by known authors and not many people remember these games for some reason (Death Gate, Shannara, Companions of Xanth, Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, Mission Critical), even though they were pretty good and usually got good scores and awards as best adventure games from magazines.
Police Quest was always a fun time too. I enjoyed that one for its realism for the time
Recommend Runaway a Road Adventure if you like point & click games, 'tis my favourite.
I’ll check it out. Never played
Cool video. 1 suggestion maybe you could post the version number of the core. This makes it seem like a new core but which version is it? Last unstable was 10 days ago
I’ll add it to the description going forward. Good idea
Lupin making the 2nd appearance of the day
Haha totally accidental but yep double Lupin!
SRG320 does absolutely amazing work. Never played anything on Saturn before and looking forward to get into it.
You have a lot of fun in store for you
I started Shining the Holy Ark today, and I got 3 hard freezes. One was seemingly random in the haunted forest area, and the other two were when I tried saving the dog in that forest. Dog one may be a guaranteed freeze, sucks.
Yes that will still freeze it seems
I always associate point and click games with DOS and old PC gaming. It feels so sacrilegious to play point and click on a “console “ without a mouse and keyboard.
It’s a weird vibe but it’s fun to showcase
oh well, finally a good use for my 16/9 CRT ! :P
There you go! The time is now
I know the mini console fad may have had its day but with all this progress in FPGA and emulation, what chance do you think there is we’ll ever see a Saturn mini? I can’t see the production cost being at a place where they’d take a punt on what is considered a failed console. Personally it’s my favourite console and I think Saturn appreciation has really grown over the years. I’d love to see it happen, would be so cool if it was successful and see it get the love it deserves😊
Minimal chances at best. At least in the US. Maybe in Japan
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah, sad but true😢
I very much like point and click adventure games but I am not really a huge fan of the "Myst clone" sort (apart from a couple exceptions). I don't really like it when adventure games put a puzzle right in front of you on one screen and just say "figure it out". Obviously, all adventure games have puzzles but in say a LucasArts game, the puzzles more often than not have you engage in the actual gameplay, talking to characters, exploring, collecting items etc. Rather than just stare at a single screen for like an hour and just solve the Rubix cube.
It’s def an antiquated design but back in the day they got their hooks into me
@@VideoGameEsoterica Nice. I have fond memories of Zork: Nemesis on PC from back in the day. It very much falls into the Myst-clone territory but it was one of the few games that I sat down with both my parents in front of the family computer to play as a child. It scared the heck out of me, certain parts.
Zork was very similar to Myst but also unique in its own ways
I played Jewels of the Oracle on PC.
Glad someone remembers it!
4:02 I used to hope Sega would invert the transparency mask at hardware or at devlib level 60 times a second so the net-like artifacts would get temporarily blended away.. I used this method to get 64 shades of transparency to allow translucent objects like fogs to get properly lit like the rest of the scene back in the 2000s.. this method was very effective.. I don’t know if this is possible on the Saturn core level.
Would probably need to be done to the game and not the core
@@VideoGameEsoterica The Kronos emulator does replace meshes with transparencies so it is possible
Would be interesting to see on FPGA
Replacing with true transparent object sometimes mess with ordering..
transparent objects are usually need to be taken out of the solid object pipeline to be sorted for rendering order and lit separately (or not lit at all), but you don’t have to do that with the meshing.. meshing are basically solid objects with see through cutouts..
and if the cut outs on/off patterns switches 60 times a second, the cutting outs mostly go away.
I just wonder which part of Saturn system generates that pattern as most devs at the time would love to solve that problem if they had the chance, but seem like everyone were stuck using that same pattern, and most devs say that those are Saturn specific problem.. and those devs are really smart.. so I suppose those can’t be done per game or through software and probably fed in via the graphic device..
That’s why I thought if that can be fixed, or as a toggle to be added to the FPGA core… I don’t know
Any friends i had growing up whose parents had banned video games in the house had these point and click games on Pc. I remember being very bored and thought their parents sucked.
Haha there’s a lot to love in them even if they are slower paced
Is there a way to play these in widescreen while the mister is in 1440p mode or do I have to lower the resolution to 1080p to achieve widescreen?
So long as your panel has an aspect ratio that fits widescreen should be fine
Eyeball obtained.
🤣
any idea why the music always goes out in a lot of games? turned on Nights after watching this video to try out the widescreen mode and the music goes out, it does that in a lot of games. i heard bad ram could cause issues with the saturn core? or is it just because the core if a work in progress?
Ram. Do you have either 2.5V stick or the four chip ram version?
@@VideoGameEsoterica v2.4 according to my eBay history
Time to upgrade to 2.9V or 3.0V. Both are fine
@@VideoGameEsoterica thank you 🙏🏻
@@VideoGameEsoterica I just bought my MiSTer using the Mister Multisystem. Also having the sound cutting out. Guessing this board’s integrated RAM is 2.4V?
SEGA IN THE MID '90s!
The best Sega was from like 92-2002. Golden decade
If it ain't Baroque, don't fix it.
Dad joke for the win
@@VideoGameEsoterica thanks...I try really hard. Needed to watch Beauty and the Beast like 100 times in my youth to remember that one.
My wife and I just rewatched it last month. Still holds up
@@VideoGameEsoterica it's a great movie...although, Lumiere was a bit handsy with the feather duster.
🤣
Is Burning Ranger Playable on Mister FPGA?
Yep. Works well now
@VideoGameEsoterica Yayyy!!! 😁
Happy times indeed

YAY!

@@VideoGameEsoterica still hiding behind these little gimmicks i see...i could simply change my avi and what would you do then to save face? hm?
Change it to hand banana!

Lol I’ve already won. Google the difference between a pressed cd and a CD-R and find out there is one. I’ll let basic googling win this for me
