Sonic R is such a heartbreak. I remember finding a kiosk with a Saturn that had Sonic R playable. I was so excited, the game was visually pretty stunning. But it controlled so poorly. I've never gotten used to it. The track design seems to not take the sloppy controls into account. I love Jon Burton and Traveler's Tales, they did some really amazing things, but gameplay was often their weak point.

Bought my MiSTer 3-4 years ago so I assume I’m on the older RAM. I noticed some weird sound glitches with Shienryu after updating via update_all a few hours ago so that’s given me extra reason to take my MiSTer apart and investigate the RAM; thanks.
I tend to forget I'm not playing on a real Saturn almost every time I play on my MiSTer... until I look down and notice an N64 controller in my hand. Honestly, The ol 64 controller is surprisingly well suited to Saturn. It's like the lost 6 button controller that never was. As far as gouraud shading is concerned, The only thing I noticed was off was in Tomb Raider. Lara had a graphical oddity on her calf that made it look like the worst cramp ever. I wonder if that's fixed now XD
I waited for the update on update all. Shinobi Legion did not work for me on the October update, but it is functioning now I’m sure there’s other stuff but that’s what I went to first.
also VGE I just played sonic R again for saturn, and I can confirm that it's the same as PC. my tip on how to play next time is.. use tails instead of a character with a car, and treat this as a sonic game like sonic adventure, not like a car game. you press forward because you're running forward. you should jump a LOT to avoid things, and tails especially can fly if you're about to mess up and land in water. the first laps are always laggier because you have to take hairpin turns etc. but just.. when you go sideways, stop holding up and slam on right/left, don't angle forward, slam the stick fully sideways and anticipate the turns, and finally make sure you get rings because then you can take doors which are a much more natural route than the tracks which tend to randomly turn off in annoying directions
Looking forward to this now - Just transferring the 0mhz Dos games over before I get stuck in. I've got the v2.9 ram so can I assume there is no reason at all to upgrade to 3.0 as its £49.99 in the UK which is a bit steep just for one core.
my opinion of Sonic R is that it's the third best 3d sonic behind Adventure 2 and Adventure. I think in that era of gaming too considering sonic in 3d is kinda trash compared to mario because it's all about speed but 3d platformers are way better when they're about physics and precision, and speed doesn't work at all in this era because the consoles were too weak to have large 3d areas and would have constant popin and fog, sonic R is about as good as you could possibly hope for for a sonic game on saturn
I held off until the core got to public release state and it's hugely impressive. Watching your videos on it's progress over the months was really informative, so thank you! I am having issues with certain games not running that do appear on the compatibility spreadsheet (Quake, Panzer Dragoon Saga among others). Is this down to not having the correct bios maybe? I have a Hi-Saturn one and it does Japanese, European and USA games but it just has issues with some of them.

One thing I try to avoid, and I'm pretty strict about it, is buying hardware that becomes redundant within a short time, it's wasteful and leads to landfill, so I'm a little perplexed about the 2.5 RAM module I just purchased with the analogue 6.1 I/O board being an issue now, I meant it was £40 lol, that’s not nothing, what can I do with it now once I swap it out for the 3.0 module, at this rate i'll buy the 3.0 and an SRAM module will come out, which I'm hoping actually happens as it will help with audio timings & performance on a many console/arcade cores.
That’s just kind of what happens on these projects. They evolve over time. I get it can be slightly frustrating. 2.5V is still good for everything that isn’t Saturn

I've been looking into SD card MUX or SD-Wire, to see if that will be better for stability and audio timings et cetera, with it, you can use NV-SRAM drives/modules or SLC NAND modules, which have multitudes lower latency than the very high-latency TLC based microSD cards, you can get SLC based microSD & full-size SD cards, but those are very expensive (hundreds). Low latency SLC NAND is around 60us vs over 1000us for a decent quality microSD card, an average SD card is even slower, it's still miles away from the audio SRAM chips in retro game consoles and MIDI modules, which is sub 50ns, but it should still really help and improve things, I'm really interested in Intels Optane DRAM M.2 modules which are around 350ns, I think running MiSTer ROMS from a 16GB M.2 Optane memory module with 350ns could be a perfect match and not a million miles away from running from the sub 50ns SRAM on real game carts and the ARAM in consoles like the Mega Drive & Saturn, using SD-Wire you can run MiSTer directly from one of the Optane modules.

Christmas Nights looking good. Love that game, have to play it every year. Sonic R is a headache to play. Which is a shame as the graphics and sound are up there with the system's best.

From what I heard, v3.0 just adds some ground connections compared to v2.9, so probably not much of a difference. I assume it's theoretically a better design but the same in practice, but I'm no expert.
Hi the new update_all Saturn core still having problem with die hard arcade. The issue is when the resolution changed from one cutscene to another the screen will be black for 3-5 seconds without me able to see anything. This is especially irritating during quick time event when you have to press a certain button on the given time frame. Anyone else having this issue or is there a workaround for it?
Sonic R kinda traumatized me as a kid because of how bad, how horrible it controlled. But. That soundtrack. That absolutely BANGIN soundtrack. CAN'T YOU SEE, THE SUN IS SHINING OVER ME !!!
Also @VideoGameEsoterica I don't know what module I have because... it actually came on the MultiSystem PCB (it was nice because it allows for adding a 2nd RAM stick on the DE10 itself, and not using at first). I guess I should see if it's mentioned in their docs, or asking on their Discord, because I have no idea 😂 It always works and has been a wonderful investment for a consolized MiSTer in the last 3 years I've had it

Seem to be having some issues. Unable to properly boot final fight revenage. Same with xmen vs street fighter. I have the 1.01 Japanese bios and toggled 4m ram. Black screen is all i get.

Beetle Saturn does it just as good in software. The mister is overpriced, and its lifespan is questionable. Hardware production could be discontinued but software emus will last forever. A 100$ dell OptiPlex will play even GameCube games at full speed. A better solution.
@ammonitida The vast majority of people already use software emulation. We're all here for FPGA emulation. Who is the audience you are trying to address? Could your time and efforts be better spent elsewhere?

You’ll be fine. 2.5 is the module that can present issues. I have a single 2.9 and a dual 3.0 and I test on both regularly with identical results

It’s not finished yet so it will still have issues. That being said that sounds like a tv problem and not a MiSTer one

Odd it broke. I’ve been using the retrobit Saturn pad for three years with zero issues. The new 8BitDo Saturn pad seems decent

Seem to be having some issues. Unable to properly boot final fight revenage. Same with xmen vs street fighter. I have the 1.01 Japanese bios and toggled 4m ram. Black screen is all i get.
I’d try hitachi hi-Saturn bios 1.02 or 1.03
Would having v2.5 of the 128 SD ram would have anything to do with it? Like needing to upgrade to a newer version?
Could be use. I’d recommend changing the ram to 2.9 or 3.0

Beetle Saturn does it just as good in software. The mister is overpriced, and its lifespan is questionable. Hardware production could be discontinued but software emus will last forever. A 100$ dell OptiPlex will play even GameCube games at full speed. A better solution.

@ammonitida The vast majority of people already use software emulation. We're all here for FPGA emulation. Who is the audience you are trying to address? Could your time and efforts be better spent elsewhere?
We all basically use every option available to us. And we are spoiled for options
