Bulk slash as one of the most impressive fanmade english patch I've ever seen. Not only did they translate the text but they also hired voice actresses to redub the whole game in a 90's anime english dub way with all of its charm and cheesyness. And on top of that the patch also mods the game to add support for the Saturn's twin-stick controller. Best English patch for any game!
-Power Slave -die hard arcade -grandia -cotton 2 magical night dreams -golden axe the duel -nights into dreams -street fighter zero 3 -panzerdragoon 2 zwei
The Saturn has so much to offer, especially if you are a fan of rpg, fighting games. It is hard to program on the 32 bit system but for sure it has the potential to be just amazing in 3d and even better than the ps1.
Omg I forgot about die hard arcade. It was literally my favorite arcade cabinet to play. It felt so responsive for that time. And the graphics really did make it better than other games
Because PlayStation did all its 3D through software, whereas SEGA added the VDP2 chip for hardware 3D at the cost of ease of development. The Saturn is the 2nd strongest machine after the N64, but PlayStation was both easier to code for, and not limited by a cartridge with a mere fraction of the storage space. Both are still stellar systems though, it's hard not to love either of them.
OMG the Saturn is a BEAST to collect for! I love Shining Wisdom, Deep Fear, Magic Knight Rayearth, Game Tengoku: The Game Paradise, Exhumed (power slave), Kyuuyenkai Fantastic Pinball, Vampire Saviour.....I could go on and on! Great video!
Saying Powerslave is a Doom clone is doing it a great disservice and is not even remotely close to a fair comparison. Sure, its an FPS from the mid-90's that is sprite based but that's where the comparison to Doom begins and ends. Powerslave is closer in its gameplay to Metroid than it is to Doom to be honest. While there are your typical levels, you get power-ups that allow you to reach previously unreachable areas (and a great deal of the very well hidden secrets) in levels that you have previously completed. The game isn't just about shooting bad dudes, exploration is equally if not more important, of which platforming plays a decent part in. You don't find these qualities in your average "Doom Clone". Great video otherwise! :D
Yep, Exhumed (Powerslave) is, more or less, a fps metroidvania. The PC version is a totally different game, more akin to Doom. Btw, the Saturn version is the best version.
Yep remember those days here in the US...and getting import games, which I think during that time the Saturn had the best Japanese Version Jewel Cases, by far. Also great extras on their Japanese versions of games like art galleries and soundtracks.
Saturn 🪐 is very misunderstood as a 3D machine, it’s not that it couldn’t do a stellar job, it’s that it took a greater skill set to understand the more complex hardware. Travellers Tales did an incredible job with the engine on Sonic R, quirky controls aside, visually it looks stunning imho.
my brothers and i have a pretty substantial physical collection. we haven't sold any games since probably 1990 and have a TON of gems in our collection, but my most coveted game is probably panzer dragoon saga.
@@thatvideogamesshow the series as a whole is criminally underrated. it should have been way more successful and i'd kill for another RPG in that universe.
Also, Dynamite Deka got its name because Sega didn't have the license for Die Hard in time for the game's launch in Japan. Hence the different name in Japan. Also, the Japanese version features an old Sega arcade game, Deep Scan, as a minigame that's playable from the game's menu. Scoring well in Deep Scan unlocks extra credits to use in the main game. Very helpful when you want to beat it!
I was just playing SEGA Rally Championship this evening, and I really forgot the sheer sense of speed in that game, so even though I've played it multiple times before, I still found myself wowed by it.
I was just barely too young to get a Saturn as my parents made me buy my own consoles, I have always wanted to try a ton of games on the Saturn. Been hearing of a Saturn Mini that would be great
Gotta say, it's kinda weird hearing a Brit call PowerSlave by its american name instead of the name it took in Europe, which was Exhumed. As mentioned by others, it definitely wasn't a doom clone. As you progressed, you got extra abilities that opens up new areas of the large map, like a metroidvania. Bulk Slash is a very cool game but It's quite clear why it was not released in the west. Aside from the poor position the saturn was in at the time of release, the game is really short and you can blast through it in a couple of hours. The game also made extensive use of digitised voice samples to guide the player around the map, like in Burning Rangers, that meant that the game would need to be completely redubbed in english to allow it to work, which was probably a cost any publisher wouldn't want to take on.
Great picks here! I think it’s super impressive seeing how smooth Decathlete (Athlete Kings) runs. Nights was a game that really impressed me back in the day, even if I had no idea what was going on in the game 🤣. Awesome video man!
I really like your channel, but I doubt you ever played Powerslave (Exhumed in EU) when you're calling it a Doom clone. It's a first person adventure game with shooting in it, similar to what Metroid Prime did years later. The gunplay was only one of many aspects that made the game, it was nothing like Doom at all.
A very underrated and unique system - I love how the best games harness it's strengths. Comparing it to the Playstation only shows the weaknesses, but in reality both systems complemented each other well with different strengths.
Others commented it but I thought it be worth bringing up as well, if you have a Saturn emulator or a way to run burnt CD-Rs you can get an outstanding English patch for Bulk Slash that dubs over the voices, translates text, and adds twin stick support. I need to try Powerslave more the next time I have my Saturn hooked up. It gets pretty open and exploration heavy as it carries on making it feel similar to the Metroid Prime even if it starts off feeling like a Doom clone. The lighting effects are wild on that game, and I've heard the 3D analog pad feels great with it. Lots of fun titles on here, always love seeing the Saturn covered more :)
It's hard to pick a favorite, but a top few: Enemy Zero Dragon Force Galactic Attack Street Fighter Alpha 2 Sega Rally Championship Virtua Cop 2 I could probably name 20 and still feel guilty. I do have all of the games in this video save Powerslave. I missed out on the Saturn version of it. They're all awesome games.
I snagged Die Hard Arcade when it came out for the Saturn and we had a ball with that one! :-D That game was tons of fun... especially with a partner kicking everyone's (and everything's) ass! lol
I heard a rumour that the team responsible for the Sonic game for Saturn asked for the nights engine to the Sonic team, but you naja refused to share it
Idk if in your first best looking saturn games you talked about it but NinPen Manmaru is definitely great looking. It's got a very vibrant cellshaded artstyle
I'm overjoyed to see people giving the Saturn some love. I know the system isn't perfect, but it was certainly unlike any other system before and after it. Also I know people give the US Saturn gamepad some flack, but I think it was perfectly comfortable and functional
I really need to try to get into Bulk Slash again. Key word is "try". I felt that the controls weren't as tight as I wanted them to be, items and UI didn't feel intuitive and not being able to save right away really kinda killed it for me.
What I think would've been a great answer to FF7, would've been Phantasy Star 5 and beyond; a Phantasy Star game installment for the Saturn would've been a great fix in the style of FF7 or 8 at the time for RPG lovers both new and old!
I always said that Golden Axe the Duel is a great looking 2d fighter and showing Saturn's potential. And I am sure that Saturn could handle SF3 3rd Strike after that (and with the help ofcourse of the 4mb ram cart).
cool video...finding sfz3 on the cheap....basically impossible, nowadays eheh...i was lucky to snag a cartless copy for about 85 euros, almost a decade ago...
Hell yeah, this is a fantastic video, not like that typical BS on YT by some clueless guy who read a 3 minute Wikipedia article on the Saturn... Nice job man!! 👏
I still remember receiving my Saturn for Christmas in 1995. I can't count the hours I spent playing Virtua Fighter 2 and Virtua Cop (with light guns) with my cousin. While not all of the games I got were great....I still enjoyed them non-the-less. I still have my Saturn...too bad games are so stupidly expensive now. On a side note...the Saturn wasn't 3-D impaired....it was extremely complicated to code for and Sega upper management screwed the pooch over and over again with asinine decisions that doomed the Saturn before it ever had a chance. That bad management killed the Dreamcast as well.
Great video, thx! good to see that this incredible era is not forgotten yet, when #SEGA was obviously at it’s peak in matter of content. Will perhaps add Sega Rally, Last Bronx and Burning Rangers just to quibble a bit 😅
The Saturn was way bigger in Japan. So many games there. I think almost 1000 Gotta be X-Men vs street fighter or marvel sh vs street fighter. Incredible games. Virtua cop 2 honorable mention
Find Street Fighter Zero 3 for Saturn on the cheap. 😂😂😂 That's a good one! It's too bad they didn't include this feature in the recent Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. Maybe we can one day get a Saturn port to modern consoles. Exhumed/PowerSlave is a really expensive one too but anyone wanting to experience it, it got a Remake for Modern Consoles. Grandia for Saturn, also didn't come Stateside but there's an English patch for it.
Impressive. Yet, the 3d titles looks horrible, the same happens with Psone and N64. These consoles was the 2d heaven, the 3d games just got really solid in the next generation.

What is your favourite Sega Saturn game?
1) Street Fighter Alpha 3
2) Nights Into Dreams
3) Sega Rally Championship Plus (JPN)
4) Panzer Dragoon
5) Radiant Silvergun
Great choices!
Sekkou Sonic Council
Rabbit
Astal
Groove On Fight
Nights into Dreams
Saturn Bomberman
Shining the Holy Ark
Dragon Force and Street Fighter Alpha 3.
Power Slave on the saturn actually did a lot of unique things for the genre. It wasn't just a DOOM clone. It was a metroidvania.
true that
The Grandia games have the best battle systems of any RPG I've ever played. They really are "must play" games...

I really need to try that out. I've gotten pretty far into the gane but it would be great to know what's going on in the story and missions.

Night's Into Dreams still impresses the Hell out of me. That one is a great example of Sega firing on all cylinders creatively.
Seeing these graphics makes me sad, I remember these were simpler time.
Oh Hell Yeah!! SEGA Saturn...
It deserved way more love back in the day!
@@thatvideogamesshow yup
Bulk Slash was one of those games that just pulled me in the second Instarted playing it. It's one of my favorite games on the Saturn.
All those Working Designs games were great too.
Saturn had cleaner 3d graphics, than PS1, because Saturn didn't suffer from the ugly texture warping.

Nice inclusion of Fantastic Pinball there on your list! Such an awesome, beautiful game that nobody talks about!

Yes
You’re not wrong, but that was just the name of the genre at the time. Analogous to FPS as an identifier.
Doom clones now known as boomer shooters 😅
Yep, Exhumed (Powerslave) is, more or less, a fps metroidvania. The PC version is a totally different game, more akin to Doom. Btw, the Saturn version is the best version.

Honestly, your description of it doesn't do Bulk Slash justice. That game still looks pretty good, even today.
The speed of the game is in incredible. Saturn 3D games are made to move fast.

The dreamcast version is cheap but strangely the saturn one is supposedly the better version.
Surprised you didn’t mention that people can actually plan Grandia now because of the fan English mod (which you used in the video!)

How do you manage to play it in English on the real hardware ?

A lot of those were covered in part 1 🙂
I thought we were talking about graphics?
Should have mentioned Saturn Powerslave blows away the PS1 version.
