      i just discovered them this past month. I've only played 2 games using it, deathsmiles and sonic 06, and it seemed to run it pretty well. Fast load times and visuals looked great. I had no idea there were emulators past 6th gen, ps2 and xbox. If it really is a small team of 3 dudes they are killing it. sonic 06, even tho it is a broken POS, ran pretty well with only a few small visual glitches, and a couple gamebreaking visual glitches that went away after a gameover and restart. I was able to play though the entire game, a hell of a lot faster than the official 360 game.

      @@thingsiplay Chad ps4 is being ran thru a compatibility layer and being developed that way…
      So yes of course it rung x86-x64 as the jaguar is a x86 - x64 architecture…
      However implementing the compatibility layer is not that easy as you need a jailbroken ps4 and also pretty much mirroring the console with out using its original code or structure so it takes time..
      It’s not like the recent Xbox one emulator that lets you play games on your of because of said compatibility layer and Microsoft already is a x86 - x64 system…

    RPCS3’s compatibility is understated. The reason it is low is because you have to dump certain files and have proof of you beating the game. Example: I have beaten Dark Souls many years ago on RPCS3 with a decent CPU and no hacks, no problem, but it is still considered ingame because I didn’t know how to extract the files needed to submit it.

    • @WackoMcGoose
      @WackoMcGoose 2 месяца назад +2

      Huh, interesting. Dolphin's compatibility is pretty much just user-reported afaik, so they'll just take you at your word that "hey, I was able to get all 45 Edgars and didn't notice any jank, mark Animaniacs as Perfect compat", or "pressing a certain button combo crashed not only Paper Mario but caused a BSOD, mark it as Some Issues", they don't require _proof_ (but having logfiles and video is helpful if you _did_ encounter jank)...

    • @wvxl
      @wvxl 2 месяца назад +10

      You also have to remember that it has to be playable on the recommended specifications (or below) for it to be considered playable. Midnight Club: Los Angeles for example is perfectly emulated via RPCS3 but it requires a very beefy CPU in order to be playable. Dark Souls is considered playable now though so there's that.

    Emulation is really important to preserve the history of video games or even entire computer/console generations. I really appreciated the work the community has done to make this possible.
    But one emulator class that is much more important to me than any console emulation is X86 PC Emulation. The discontinued PCem project and the still ongoing 86Box are great to get back into the pre 2000 years. I am not sure if you ever have covered this in your channel, if not please consider making a dedicated video for it, because they deserve it. Also there is a really good alternative using virtualization, running windows 98 with full GPU support up to DirectX 9 using a driver solution called "SoftGPU".

      Why did it seem impossible? PS3 emulation I can see saying that because of the architecture.
      PS4 is a AMD Jaguar CPU PC, basically. I was expecting emulation to be the easiest of any console.
      This is a big part of why Sony is now willing to invest in PS4/5 games being ported to PC.

    • @elimalinsky7069
      @elimalinsky7069 2 месяца назад +16

      @@dragons_red From what I understand the PS4 hasn't been fully decrypted yet, so the low level instruction calls are still largely unknown. This is basically the communication between the OS/kernel, hardware and software (i.e. games). Also the PS4 uses a custom API known as GNM/GNMX, which is undocumented to the general public, so it's pretty much a guess work as to how the API functions.

    • @emufan
      @emufan 2 месяца назад +9

      @elimalinsky7069 Reverse engineering GNM library isn't really the big issue in PS4 emulation, but the overall complexity and feature set of the GPU hardware. Most of the GNM library is statically linked inside the game, and the few functions the emulator can intercept from the system library are dead simple to reimplement. The emulator has to directly parse PM4 command lists sent to the hardware, recompile the shaders, and figure out the resource layout from them since there is no high-level API to hook. In that sense it's diffrent from dxvk/proton and more akin to classic emulators. So most work is following open AMD isa/pm4/reg docs to figure out what game is trying to do

    I do think it’s worth a mention that Xemu is on the verge of merging Vulcan rendering to the main branch, and you can already download test versions with Vulkan rendering. This is pretty substantial and in some cases such as MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf, has fixed unplayable games to be fully playable. In other instances of my own testing I have found Vulkan to be capable of fixing certain graphical bugs and improve performance.

You can upscale to widescreen, you can up the texturing to a considerable degree, even netplay's a thing. It's also seeing updates every once in a blue moon that keeps this thing running like a champion. And hey, if a game's giving you a rash of shit, cheats are also implemented into it per game! @crystalwater505 It does a lot of stuff after the og playstation, N64, Dreamcast, PSP, DS, 3DS, PS2 and GC/Wii from memory but I'd argue that some of these would yield better results using standalone Emulators.
      Retroarch does cover such a vast amount of consoles and computers, though, so it is essential for me.

    Unless the emus aren't playable on portable devices aka Android and Steam Deck , the switch does not suffer from opposition. The moment Yuzu was playing on Steam Deck i knew the end was coming. Now for anything older than Switch there is no point to hunt it down.

      Oh for Nintendo there is still a reason. It's retro games and OST are being put on NSO. So it still might get around to protecting it's intellectual property. Didn't Retro Game Corps receive a RUclips strike for featuring footage of an old Mario game?

    • @lolidasterner414
      @lolidasterner414 2 месяца назад +2

      @skycloud4802 yes it can be true. But there is a difference between the home user and streamer when they engage in emulation. The 1st one makes money or gains fame through using intellectual property (?) and can be said that in a way promotes piracy. The 2nd just plays the game in his home and none knows it. For me , my ps4 with bloodborne is in Greece and now that i live in nl i downloaded bloodborne and finished it in my laptop. So did i cause any harm for sony ? The same for Nintendo.
