The algorithm is the audience. Everything the algorithm does is based off of the engagement and feedback that it gets from the audience.
So if you’re doing everything “right” according to what you’ve been told the algorithm wants and still not getting the results, it’s not the algorithm that’s holding you back, it’s the audience. So think about why the AUDIENCE isn’t choosing to engage with your videos and make changes based on that, not the algorithm.

No matter how much work a small channel puts it, or how good they think they are doing, they probably are missing something somewhere and still need improvement in one of those areas. It’s simply a matter of experience and knowledge. Don’t get frustrated and direct blame, keep learning and improving. Speaking of para social relationships, I would love a video on navigating these, as a growing RUclipsr. What boundaries are appropriate? I’m sure a lot of us get awkward, over familiar DM’s, requests for personal one-to-one help on certain areas related to their videos that could take a lot of time out of your day, requests to meet, asking questions that you don’t want to answer. It feels rude ignoring questions in comments or DM’s, but some of them are too much or could impact safety.

I am a small channel with just over 50 videos and 1,600 subscribers. Recently I have seen that some of my videos are getting picked up by RUclips. My normal view count will suddenly shoot up to thousands of views rather than hundreds. This usually lasts for around 24 hours before it shuts back off. Not every video gets this treatment, but it's getting a bit more frequent. Once out of every 3 or 4 videos or so. Coz as a viewer, I also like to watch videos that already had thousands of views compared to those who just had hundreds of views. One of the reason was that, thousands of views more likely have comments in it which I also love to read about unlike videos with small views, most likely only have less than 10 comments or not at all. And I've met a lot of amazing people I would never have met if I never posted videos who I keep in touch with.
My advice for anyone who is starting out besides making sure you have a good mic that works is to have a hard drive that you can store your videos on, that way you can record in bulk and upload at your own pace. Other then that you can go far with just a simple laptop with a built in mic and your tenacity, it's not ideal but it's good to start out with.

I kind of did quit. Got about 300k views but ultimately never joined the shorts fund almost 2 years ago. I think I’m going to apply what I’ve learned to create shorts and long form content now that I’ve got time on my hands again!
I even found a niche that was successful every time but didn’t capitalize on it too much. Might see if it still works all this time later

This is exactly an issue I am finding. My videos are being suggested I feel to a completely wrong audience. I know people can watch many different things but for an example I am a more “homemaking, vlog” channel and I’m constantly being suggested in videos about self defence, plastic surgery, etc. I mean topics way far removed from what my channel is about and none of my videos ever address any of these topics. The chance of someone that is watching self defence videos wanting to then watch my little homemaking video is pretty small. I am trying everything I can between titles, description, chapters and thumbnails to make it obvious where my content should be suggested to but it seems like it just doesn’t work. I had a long time subscriber once comment “why aren’t you a bigger channel, you’re so real?” All I can answer is 🤷🏼‍♀️

Naturally, they are going to push the bigger channels to keep revenue coming in. However, we are seeing a push of smaller channels lately.. which is awesome.. a friends channel has hit 1400+ subs, but they are struggling with watch time.. both long form and shorts.

RUclips is heading towards saturation. Its down to what people want to watch we hear. The audience. But smaller channels have a minimal chance to get viewers as the whole platform is saturated by big accounts and whats ready-made, off the shelf. Create two versions of RUclips - pro and up and coming.

I believe RUclips doesn’t do enough to help small channels. I feel that my channel suffers because certain channels like mine are favored by the algorithm. For example Sunday I uploaded the same video as another channel…I’ve had 60 views, the other channel has 3200, same content uploaded nearly same time. I really don’t know if I’ll continue and I think that’s what RUclips wants

It's 6 and two 3s I think. Bigger RUclipsrs have a bigger audience so have more click and view power to get to more people. Smaller RUclipsrs have much less click and view power so it reaches less people. But it's all about growth which happens slowly 99% of the time. But growth is growth.

Persistence is the key. My channel is over a year old and only in the last 6 months has there been action. I tried a few different topics until I found something that gained traction. Part of the problem is there is only so much screen realistate on the feed for RUclips to list possible videos.
Finally subs are rising so far it is just approaching 200 but it feels good to see it finally happening.
I even had one viral that got almost 5k views and got me 50 new subs. Just keep plugging away at your passion, experiment and have fun. The rest will come

There were times when I would have a lot of impressions but the views were very low with sometimes a watch time of only 1% -2% and I looked at the “content suggesting this video section “ and it was always an audience that even I wondered who was watching those kind of videos and the titles would be in some language I didn’t even know. I think RUclips works the same way training a LLM does. It needs a decent amount of data before it can know which audience to push your videos to so that means you need to post a lot of videos ( especially if you’re too niche) and the algorithm will pretty much throw most of them on the wall and see what sticks. With this perspective, I think you can find ways to make it easier to know which videos you should post To make it easier for yt to know your targeted audience.

RUclips is a business that says it all. Why pay for a channel when there is so much free content. The law of supply and demand means it is in RUclips's business interest to show non-monetized content. Popular channels will get views because they have established an audience. The platform is evolving and staying current with new tactics will make this a challenge. Many will quit because they went after the money.

Can you compile some data for how the average youtuber does in their first year? Average videos made? Average views per video? Average subs after a year? and the same for after 5 years and 10 years. So we can compare our own. I have a feeling the numbers would be lower than expected because a lot of people give up.

On the interaction part I usually try to interact with commenter's as long as I don't get a comment like " I hate Ai! " or something else that isn't like constructive criticism.
    To me interaction is important.
I do try to make something I would want to watch or see from somebody else. I liked the saying somebody mentioned about how they wanted to make a show they would want to watch themself. I at times rewatch some of my things to see if I would still like them.
My first video did not get many views at first but after many other uploads my first video got a lot of views. So I definitely know that is a thing about previous videos being pushed later.
A lot of times when I have things created I look at them and I think if I don't like this how can I expect others to.
Among my top goals is making something I can enjoy and hope others can enjoy to.
Having 800+ subscribers definitely shows some people like what I have created with Ai , and I am very grateful for that.
I'm so close to 1,000 subscribers!

Good info, thanks for sharing. I'm a new small channel that I started because my youngest daughter is 2 and learning her basics. I noticed she was watching certain things and saw where maybe she would accel more, with her and I creating her own little channel. It has helped her accel in her learning for sure and all her little cousins and nephew love the channel. I think that it will appeal to some and definitely not all folks but I really created it to have a different approach on interaction with my daughter in her early education. It seems to me that like anything in life, if we stick to our goal, we will achieve success. In whatever manner that is for each of us.
For me the channel is really about my daughter learning and me helping her learn using a slightly different approach of creating her own little videos.
Thanks for sharing and helping us understand more clearly some things, for those of us who may appreciate the clarification, hahaha.

a year ago, after publishing so many videos without even reaching 100 views i thought youtube was just on luck, my videos were having j and l cuts in audios, multiple camera points, b-rolls, skits, effects, sfx... i tried to enhance videos in the best possible way but one thing i realized was... no one cares. so that's when i started a brand new channel with completely different niche, i went from gaming to animation. i didn't care about quality, all that stuff i mentioned before, the only thing i cared about... is the audience. videa idea is the most important thing to succeed on youtube. you can make mrbeast level edited video but if the idea is not right, video will not get as many views as with other ideas. i'm working almost for a year on my animation channel and now i have more than 11k subscribers, i'm spending most of the time to find the right idea that will make my next video 1 out of 10. youtube is hard but when you get consistent with ideas, people could not resist clicking on your videos.

I’m sharing my story and hope it helps others. I’m in the gaming niche. I started the first channel beginning of 2024 as a verity channel to learn about RUclips and editing. I pushed it to 2k subs but 2022 July I started my “real channel”. I had 1500 subs at 2023 Xmas, now I’m around 3,5k. I’m creating content for a game that is hard and pretty much a niche game. However there are channels in the space with 80-100k subs, not many but there are. I will not give up. Try to stand out, be unique and don’t think your video is better compared to everyone else’s. Keep rocking! 🎉

I’ve noticed now that I’ve gotten traction on my other channel and my videos are being suggested to what appears as sexually suggestive yoga videos. Which does not lead to the right people. So I strongly believe that this is a very big case.
By the way, RUclips recently sent out a survey to their users on their personal experience on the platform. And as a RUclips creator. If you haven’t already I’d encourage you complete the survey.

Here’s an idea. When you upload a video search your title then filter results by upload date and if it the most recent videos have a lot of views stick to that topic. Also search for the general topic of your video and do the same with the results.
