      Depending on when the book was published, the publishers might have only pretended to give the author an editor lol
      Publishing these days is hot garbage, and nothing is getting edited anymore because editing costs time, effort, and money, and if you’re self published, you can't afford an editor unless you're already well established.

      Don't think I would say trad pub has a high bar for entry, just a pretty specific one. What publishers care about above all is marketability, the only question they ask themselves when looking at a book is, "how much money can we make off of this?" Quality is the least of their concerns, and just like any business primarily concerned with money, creativity and new ideas are illogical risks, so they would rather push out more of the same junk, because they're sure it makes money. Until it doesn't.

    • @vvitch-mist20
      @vvitch-mist20 4 месяца назад +23

      @@IceRiver1020
      It's very high. You need an editor to get an agent and an agent to get a publisher. Not everyone has the time or money to be able to get rejected over and over again either.
      "Marketability" really means "Is this book devoid of enough personality to be able to squeeze it into as many pockets as possible"
      I have a degree in Business and a thing we learned was LCD. Lowest Common Denominator. Books that have niches or are smaller in audience aren't picked up because it "won't make money".
      It's why books like Twilight and Fourth Wing do really well. They have main characters devoid of personality and that people make up their own. This became apparent with Twilight with the cast infamously hating their roles.

    I would have made the hard-boiled egg girl as a slime girl made of dark honey, literally, since that's what the description says she's made of. It also explains why she's sticky since she's made of honey.
    It says that she attracts people but is unaware of it. So I imagine she releases a sweet smell (smell of honey in her case) in a similar way to what carnivorous plants do to attract insects.
    Basically yes she's dangerous. Her species is carnivorous. They use their sweet smell, which kinda works like hypnotism, to attract prey and trap them with their bodies, since they're sticky and slimy, in order to eat them.
    And even though they avoid it as much as possible, they'll eat humans too if they have to. If they're starving for example, but that never happens to the point where their best solution is to eat a human.
    But her, she's doesn't care about attracting anybody to eat or whatever. As the description says, she's young. So she just doesn't understand her powers yet and she attracts people unwillingly.
    It says that because she's young, she's smooth and solid, so I guess it means that she's made of solidified dark honey and that, as they grow older, these beings slowly melt.
    I imagine that they're considered to have reached adulthood when they melted enough to stop being solid and actually become slimy.
    And the kids don't hunt because well, they're kids, but also they literally can't since, despite still being a bit sticky, their solid state prevents them from trapping anything.
    The adults do it because it's their responsability of course, but also because their kids are literally physically unable of doing it themselves.
    The older they get, the more they melt, and when they're old, they have melted to a point where they can't keep maintaining their form, which is their equivalent of dying of old age.
    I think that we've got a great concept for a species here. Slime people made of various kinds of honey.
    And in terms of story well... this girl's people usually stay far away from the humans. But she wanted to live alongside them. But there are a lot of complications since she still needs to learn how to control her powers.

    I honestly find it disturbing how predatorial some of these are written, especially with the one with the 15 year old girl. It honestly disturbed me before you mentioned that the man of the pov was older... I'm honestly really glad I haven't come across such author's, though I am only typically reading from one author (James Patterson). It's still disturbing how whoever wrote those books saw nothing wrong with what they wrote much less now predatorial it comes across.
    I truly do hope that they have it pointed out to them and offered advice on how to write it better so they are better to improve their writing and not have to worry about whoever the pov is from doesn't sound like a creep. Though this is sort of just wishful thinking. It is nice to think my wishful thinking has indeed happened and the author indeed took that advice and it improved the book.
    It is in all honesty off-putting to read such descriptions of a girl/women and people in general, I'm honestly curious... Have they ever actually seen a women in real life? Or are they just that bad at becoming with a description? I understand that writing a description for a character can be difficult I've written books myself to know that it's honestly difficult... But there's Google's to help with coming up with how to describe people

      It’s in Chapter 40 page 201 (in my edition of the book) and as far as I know, she might be one of the first women he k1ll3d (don’t know if I’m allowed to write the word uncensored, just in case), and I remembered that it was a brief description to show the type of people Grenouille tried getting the scent from. It’s right near the end of the book.

There's an OC of mine, who's a man turned literal god, trying to achieve happiness, and they differ from normal people phisically, but also mentally, on a level, where mind-reading powers only pick up white noise from his thoughts. My idea is that I should write their story in a way that I never tell the audience their thoughts either and only what they say and what people decipher from their face, which is funny, because they are a compulsive liar, and also, there would be plot significance of how much they're telling abut their past. as a perfume enjoyer (and maybe defender from the looks of these comments?) I wholeheartedly believe the creepy descriptions of the girls are creepy with a purpose. the very first sentence describes our main character as an abomination, and the book never lets up in its utter contempt for its protagonist. we're never meant to root for Grenouille (whose name literally translates to frog), we're meant to be disgusted by him, and yet utterly unable to look away. he is a pathetic predator and this is just one example of how the book communicates this. taken out of context, of course, takes away the purpose of such lurid descriptions.
    I defend the choice so strongly simply because, in the section immediately before this one in the video, I literally thought of perfume as an example of gross creepy descriptions done well/with narrative purpose 😅

    Ok but in defense of the perfume its set in urgh when was it? 18th century, maybe? I dont remember well, and a sense of disguest in the descriptors is pretty essential, and same for the pov of the main character. So in this case I'd argue its a stylistic choice, it's supposed to evoke unease and disgust in the reader.
    Idk i read Das Parfum years ago in German class and its one of my favourite books we had to read 😂

    I'm reading a book called 'Solaris' atm and while it isn't the worst thing I've seen but twice so far women's boobs have been described unnescerly, the first case was a woman who walks around with nothing on but a straw skirt and her "breasts flopped" or something, and then a 19yo dead woman is described to have her dress "wrapped tightly around her breasts" and she is also depicted to act rather child like which is a tad odd, it was written in the 60's I cant be too surprised

    Not to defend the eel guy but eels are a pretty frequent heritage food across northern europe so 'lips like hot eels in a teacup' ends up being the most british-sounding insult i can imagine

    if you want some better descriptions of women made my males, i'd suggest Percy Jackson (Written by Rick Riordan), his descriptions are honestly pretty realistic and i love his work.

    I'd love to see a "women writing men" video, for some variety. Surely, it exists, right? But I'm a little concerned you might have to read bad erotica for that. Which is always harder to read than normal bad writing.

      There's a sub for it but it wouldn't make good content. It's all either men having weird behavior/inner monologue, or a writer who has no idea how male genitalia works

      As someone who read the entire book in german - yes the descriptions are all as weird and creepy as they are in the translation. While I don't remember the boiled egg comment in particular, I do the dark syrup one. I think it greatly adds to the eerie atmosphere and twisted protagonist, since it's also mentioned several times, that he doesn't care about their looks or personhood one bit and isn't attracted to them, but is only drawn in by their scent.

    I slightly disagree about a girl being unaware of everyone looking at them being unrealistic. As a neurodivergent person, I've had those moments. It's possible a neurodivergent girl could also have that moment, especially if she was distracted by the fact she was inexplicably sticky. That'd definitely take top priority in my mind over what other people were doing, because that sounds like a sensory nightmare.

    • @lunab541
      @lunab541 4 месяца назад

      Yeah but the girls are usually not implied to be neurodivergent. Sounds more like the fantasy of being incredibly beautiful yet humble/unaware about it. As if putting effort into your appearance and knowing how good you look makes you vain or something
