I always remembered Dame Edna introducing the Commonwealth Games and she said about Our poor American friends still trying to work out why they hadn't been invited. 😂
I've always seen Charles as somebody who is uncomfortable when being up close with strangers. But when he was in a relaxed atmosphere, he enjoyed a good laugh, even at his own expense. He enjoyed telling the story of his time as a teenager at school in Australia, where his classmates referred to him as the Pommy bastard. He is still friends today with some of them.
As for Barry Humphries, to still have the Dame Edna character be relevant for over 60 years shows the genius of the man.
That and (s)he can run in high heels 😂

Some early Dame Edna is the 2 movies The Adventures of Barry McKenzie and Barry McKenzie Holds His Own from 1972 and 1974 starring many British comedians from the time such as Spike Milligan and Peter Cook and actors like Donald Pleasence. The first one takes the piss out of us Pommy bastards and the second movie takes the piss out of us Poms and the Froggies too. I love 'em. Highly recommended.
Appreciate the videos - he's done a long form TV show many times, one in particular was very funny, a long lunch with Sir Les....Probably couldn't make that type of thing today.
Have you seen the interview where Sir Les comes on and shakes the hand of Parkinson? Parkie recoils at something sticky on his fingers and wipes it off. Sir Les apologises saying "Oh sorry I've been applying my ointment earlier, but I haven't got my applicator"
It's nice to see that an American can laugh, and appreciate, Barry's alter-egos. He was an astute observer of Australian Culture...we can take the piss out of ourselves and still have a good laugh. If people out there are offended, TOUGH TIT!
