I was taken to a Barry Humphreys stand up show in Melbourne (his home town btw) when I was about 15. Laughed till I cried and could hardly breathe. Over the years, I've watched Dame Edna become a monster and a chat show hack, but the Humphreys genius never left him. The highlight was meeting him and sharing a stage at Drury Lane in the late 1980s. Onstage a comic genius, offstage a formidably intelligent and cultured man. A true one-off. RIP Barry. We won't see your like again.

Barry Humphries, along with the likes of Kylie and Steve Irwin, was one of those Aussies adored by Brits. There's no need for me to mention his comedy, that speaks for itself, but one of the most entertaining things I saw him do was to appear with Rick Stein on one of his Cornwall episodes. It's always good to see these people when they are not in character.
    RIP

30 years ago I saw Dame Edna live at Newcastle Theatre Royal. She was absolutely brilliant. We were sat in the 3rd row at the front and Dame Edna got my nanna on stage! It was so funny. She asked her name and nanna replied...Mona. Dame Edna said, oh dear, did your parents not like you? After a long time on stage my nanna returned her seat with a bunch of gladiolus flowers 💐. My nanna will be 94 in June and I phoned her earlier and we had a good laugh about it 😅 RIP

In his first interview with Parkinson, I vividly recall that Cultural Attache Sir Les, caused outrage on the phone-ins the following day - as so many thought he was the real thing - it was hilarious to listen to!
Comic genius was Barry - who was heavily involved in the satirical scene in the UK in the 1960s - my favourite skit of his was when on an aeroplane, pouring vegetable soup into a sick bag, to then eat its contents.

Me here in the UK has had the pleasure of being familiar with Dame Edna and Sir Les for over 40+ years!! and I am as equally saddened by the passing of Barry Humphries as I was with Paul O’Grady last month 😥😥 two truly funny men whose “alter egos” were even funnier and both of them have made me howl with laughter at their “directness” when asking pertinent (ie insultingly rude but truthful!) questions to the celebs who dared to guest on their “chat shows” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You sadly have missed years’ worths of fun and laughter with both Dame Edna and Miss Lily Savage (even PO’G as himself, on his afternoon tea chat show, was just hilarious) Barry as “Barry” was erudite, gifted and articulate and very “proper” on programmes about theatre, art & literature - he knew almost everything about anything - but we loved him more as Dame Edna ❤️
On one of his Dame Edna’s Experience shows, allegedly set in Dame Edna’s mansion, the “guests” had to get to the seating area via a lift from one of the upper floors and then walk down a stair well. Edna was in control of the lift buttons going up and down and the lift doors 😂. You can imagine the fun Dame Edna had with that - and to this day - I still wonder if poor old Mel Gibson is stuck inside the lift, when it “broke down”!! I can still hear him pleading with Dame Edna to call a lift engineer to fix it!😂😂.
RIP Barry, you were a comedic genius and Dame Edna will always live on….. 💔💔😥😥😥

Sir Les Patterson as described by his character as an Australian Cultural Attache could not be more different from Dame Edna Everage. Dame Edna outrageously glamourous in her frocks (dresses), frills, fluorescent hair and over the top glasses. Where as Sir Les outrageously gross often in stained, slopped over shirts, unkempt hair, suits and cigars. Sir Les, Dame Edna, Sandy Stone, Barry...thank you for the endless hours of laughter and lifting of spirits. Rest In Peace possum.

Hi Squirrel, I saw a video of an interview with Barry Humphries maybe 6 months ago. This was not an interview with one of his characters, it was the actual person, and it was quite funny because of that. He was bemoaning that he was never quite sure where Dame Edna extended to within his person and what small percentage that left for him personally. I remember during the interview he was quite miffed that he woke up one morning with his eye shadow still all in place and, how this state of affairs could come to pass. LOL He also didn't know quite what voice to put on when people addressed "Barry". He was a funny fellow. Might pay you to look up this interview.

I must remember that one too. Like as rare as rocking horse shit. I'm pretty upset about Barry's passing. It's not just about the comedy, its close to home in a way. My father was born in Kew, and Barry is so close to not only Australians, but Melburnians. The characters and incredible refinement that can be narrowed down to a culture and community, even by accent. Then there's the timeframe, simply amazing. In fact, my mother's cousin, a fairly successful actor, worked with Barry on the stage in the 50s. He was involved in the early development of the Dame Edna character, something to be proud of I think. It's a shame they had a falling out.
