  • For our Subcompact SUV Challenge, we brought the 2016 Chevrolet Trax, 2016 Fiat 500X, 2016 Honda HR-V, 2016 Mazda CX-3, 2015 Jeep Renegade, 2015 Nissan Juke and 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek to the mountains of Colorado for a week of intensive testing. Each SUV had to endure a fuel-economy drive and head-to-head comparisons of ride quality, handling, comfort and acceleration. Here’s how they finished.

      I thought I was the only one who thought people saying Fiat were unreliable was fake! People are just salty that they lost profit and made a big 500 lineup which was thought to be boring. You know what? Toyota is boring. Not Fiat. I'd rather own a Fiat 500 than ANY Toyota (except Supra, C-HR & GT86). And Fiat brought Abarth back, who make a really cool turbo 500 (called Abarth 595), the 124 Spider is back as a better MX-5, and we have the 500X!

    • @Toastmaster_5000

      +AdvancedPerson For vehicles like this, you should be prioritizing practicality over appearance, and though the CX-3 is one of the best looking in this class, it's also of the least practical. Subaru's interior is boring, but it will withstand the test of time much better. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about the tech of both vehicles.

  • @robertbrody4032

    I've owned a bunch of Subaru cars, but the Crosstrek feels like driving a wet sponge that is half frozen. I couldn't live with the Subie even though I have a Hellcat on the way. The Fiat is nice, but a bit tight for bigger folk. The Renegade is the ONLY 4x4 here and it can actually go off-road to some degree and has a lot of room for taller drivers. The Honda is insanely buzzy and loud and I would not consider it. The Juke handles great and is more fun than you'd expect, but it's not a SUV by any stretch and should be off this list. I agree on the Mazda. Just skip this and go for the regular 3, though I like the looks and handling of the CX-3. My favorite of this group is the Renegade. While FCA has some reliability issues, most people won't have trouble and the warranty is good. It's luck of the draw no matter what you buy. I had a new Subaru that had issues and a Mitsubishi that had none, so you never know.

    • @Toastmaster_5000
      @Toastmaster_5000 8 лет назад

      +Robert Brody The Subaru and Honda are better when you don't get the automatics. The Jeep doesn't have enough height to really go off-roading, and for vehicles this small, AWD is more practical than 4WD. If you don't consider the Juke an SUV (I don't consider it one either), then most options on this list wouldn't qualify. The Subaru and Jeep are the only ones that are actually capable of doing sporty things.

    all CVTs should have been 8th place and down not 1 & 2nd. not everyone is use to the 8-9speed transmission so they do feel funny at first but the out perform the others in the long run by a mile . cool list of cars to compare though all in the same catagory. makes me more interested to look at fiat 500x the trax, renegade, & escape was the only on my list so far. so nice info on that.

    • @Toastmaster_5000
      @Toastmaster_5000 8 лет назад

      +LloydJiraiya SS Your comment makes no sense at all. First of all, CVTs are infinite ratios, so it's physically impossible for a 8-9 speed transmission to outperform one (assuming the same engine is used). Second, an 8-9 speed non-DCT automatic is significantly heavier and wastes more energy due to being fluid based. On top of that, more parts means there is more that can go wrong. CVTs still have room for improvement, but they're already proving their worth over traditional automatics.

    • @FasterThanSoup
      @FasterThanSoup 8 лет назад

      +Peter Schmidt My only wish is that the efficiency matched the driving experience and feel.
      By experience, I mean the high revolution loud droning, especially in this class of vehicle that will often forgo more expensive levels of sound deadening materials.
      By feel, I mean the gear changes that can be simulated in a CVT. This denial of aggressive acceleration "feel" combined with the droning under hard acceleration when passing, merging or simply driving in a spirited fashion is not a pleasant experience with the dozen or so CVTs I've experienced over the last decade.
      I'd rather sacrifice a little efficiency for a superior driving experience and much prefer a six speed over a CVT (referring to the well engineered automatic from Mazda and the continually improving Honda CVT presented here)

    • @Toastmaster_5000
      @Toastmaster_5000 8 лет назад

      FasterThanSoup Though I understand how the droning can be annoying, what I don't get is why people don't get a noise canceller (they're not expensive) or just listen to music. It's much easier to tune out a constant noise than a varying one.
      It seems to me that the more aggressive CVTs can be found in sportier or more capable cars. When you get a CVT in an economy car, you should be aware that you are sacrificing performance for efficiency. I've known people who tuned their CVTs to shave off over 2 seconds from their 0-60 times, or people who drove sports cars with CVT and found it to be responsive. It's a heavily software-based transmission.
      I agree on your last bit, which is why I don't drive a CVT. I have test driven one once and thought it was a lot better than people made it seem, but I currently drive a manual.

  • @shamelessnjc
    @shamelessnjc 8 лет назад

    I get why it's included due to pricing but I don't feel like the Crosstrek is really in this class. It's really just an Impreza hatchback with a slight lift, making it a compact car, not a crossover. It's also almost 10 inches longer than any of the other vehicles in this test, it's not a subcompact vehicle at all.

    • @Toastmaster_5000
      @Toastmaster_5000 8 лет назад

      +Shane Shelton To my knowledge, it has the highest ground clearance in it's class, and it's not just a lift. It also has the extra cladding, the suspension is stiffer, and the frame is more durable (so it's capable of towing - the Impreza isn't).
      Also, I'm not sure where you're getting your measurements from, but the Crosstrek isn't 10 inches longer than it's competitors. In fact just doing a quick google search, I found the CRV is longer than it by 4 inches.

    • @shamelessnjc
      @shamelessnjc 8 лет назад

      +Peter Schmidt the Crosstrek doesn't compete with the CRV which is not a subcompact crossover and is bigger than every vehicle in this comparison. The HRV in this comparison is 6 inches shorter than the Crosstrek. 169" vs 175". Also the Crosstrek does have higher ground clearance than all but the Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500x both of which have 8.9 inches when properly equipped compared to 8.7. That being said the Crosstrek is still based on the Impreza hatchback and is identical mechanically and dimensionally with the exception of the suspension. It's truly just a renamed Outback Sport with a new look. I'm not downplaying what a great vehicle it is, only that it doesn't belong in this class.

      Shane Shelton The 2016 CRV is 179.4". The CRV is also 2 inches wider and 1 inch taller than the Crosstrek. So yes, it is in fact bigger in every way.
      The Crosstrek has a ground clearance of 8.7". The Renegade is known to have 2 different ground clearances, depending on the trim you get. One is taller than the Crosstrek, one is shorter.
      The Fiat 500x also has 2 different ground clearances, with the highest being 7.9". That is significantly shorter than 8.7".
      Check your facts for the models listed in this video (including the same year) - if you think the Crosstrek doesn't belong, then others don't either.

    You say the 500x is well built, fun to drive, responsive, etc... and then you contradict all of that at the end... as you rate it #2.
    You're a hack! LOL

    The Fiat, the Jeep and the Mazda are the best to me. They have a lot of personality in their styling/interior, have a proper philosophy and all three have great interiors, both in styling and built quality. The others just seem dull and uninteresting, the Subaru? Really? It's just so boring compared to the funky 500X and the sporty CX3.

      best comment so far. They missed out probably the style each cars. Only 500 and Mazda has some decent personality and i would pay that 2 cents more for this.

      I agree- You can't match the 500X's & CX-3's styling. And I'll give my own awards below based on my opinion
      Styling= CX-3 & 500X
      Reliability= Juke & CX-3
      Value For Money= Juke & HR-V, maybe 500X or CX-3 even
      Practicality & Space = Renegade + Trax (they won't win anything else)
      Tech- Anything Japanese plus the 500X
      Boring & Bland award- XV

    Being called a SUV mean that you can do at least some off road and of all the cars on this list that can handle more then some gravel on the road and three inches of snow are the jeep and the Subaru as for the rest of them their nothing more the hatchbacks !

    What stupid comments in this video. "No knobs for volume in the Honda". There is volume buttons on the wheel. "The iSight crash avoidance system was intrusive" they obviously don't know how to drive safely with proper distance between others on the road.
