I have followed you now for nearly 2 years, marveling at your engine rebuild. Recently I have been chasing a nagging rough start on my '05 Boxster. I was searching for 'smoke test' and came across your vid here. l immediately locked in on your plenum-bellows leak. Watched in close, and rewound a few times. The Boxster has it all right on top of the engine, a bit easier to get at. Late last year, I had replaced my starter and removed the 4 bellows and air intake. I thought I had got it all back together. I ran out right away in the morning to check my setup. Sure enuf, the far left clamp was on the top OK, put a mirror under the clamp, it showed it was askew a bit. Looks like there was a bump. I loosened all the clamps, slid the boots around, checked, re-checked the position of the outboard boots and clamps, and tightened them. I followed with all the others and was very confident I had them all set well. It started right up with NO roughness or coughing. It settled down smoothly. Like you I made my own homemade smoke machine. Rather than using socks, Baby oil and soldering iron, you can use smoke tablets that are used for testing smoke alarms to make the smoke. Same set up for the rest. Worked really well for me and less mess 🙂

My 996 had the same problem with the sunroof button tabs broken. Had to take it apart clean it and glue it in place. Good for another 20 years i hope.
Once some of the bigger things are out of the way I will relish fixing that darn sunroof plastic 🤓. We just fixed the transmission last week ruclips.net/video/FYkdzugiYlw/видео.html

you will never guess what my problem was! Where I installed a new IPD Plenum, which is from the throttle body to the intake manifolds, I did not tighten those clamps well enough. I had initially tigthened with a flat head screwdriver. But unbeknown to me, that was not good enough. When I did the retightening with a socket head and extension. then I could put many more turns in. maybe Im too old? In any event, immediately, the check engine light went away.

Thank you so much for doing this. I have a 2019 turbo s 911, I removed the plenum and installed an ipd plenum between the throttle body and the intake manifold, mine runs great, crazy more power, over 700 hp, but I’m getting cel. So I will do this test to see if there is leak.

The vacuum system filled me with fear and confusion since day one for some reason?? I feel for all the people out there stressing that their car is dead when it's only a simple Vacuum leak. Before you trust me with your engine rebuild I will remind you that I am a musician, not a mechanic 🤓

Well I suppose you could do a recap of the actual costs and amount of time you actually spent completing this project including the jobs you had to farm out due to expertise ie; machine shops etc. The next obvious question for me….what are your long term plans for the car??
Continue upgrading and replacing worn parts?Honestly brakes, suspension and fluid changes and other maintenance in the 996 have flood the social media Market. How about you take the car to auction show us the entire process. Then buy a new project car?
