So useful video ! I guessed based on the presence which is bringing more highs on the PT15. What would happen if you down a bit the presence and up the mids to around 12 o'clock ? I feel like there is more body in the Plexi, but maybe the wattage is to "blame" here. EDIT : I wrote my comment after the 1st test, which you were not satisfied of. It sounds closer in the second bunch of samples. How did you dial the EQ of the PT15, finally ?
7 feels like the Plexi (sounds a lot like my Plexi clone which was built very close to spec compared to vintage Marshalls). There's a "thicker" thing going on with the saturation of the gain. It's a bit smoother and fuller-bodied, but also less articulate than 1 (which I think is the PT15). There's a little more smearing low-mid frequency response with the Plexi which gives you that body, and a bit more headroom/dynamics Vs. the lower wattage PT15. But the PT15 might be the wiser choice overall in terms of features if you were shopping for a new amp head. It sounds great, you don't have to EQ it as much to get it to "Fit"/"Cut", it's very close in tone here overall. I think you and Mr. Suhr have a winner on your hands Pete! There's a point where being "faithful" isn't as important as being a huge timesaver in terms of features and controls. The PT15 is on my shortlist to try. =) Also in a full mix, almost no one would be able to tell the difference, especially after EQing to fit.
Exactly what I was hoping to hear/see, thanks Pete! IMO, Amp 7 is the PT15. While you really got incredibly close, it sounds a bit compressed, less open, than Amp 1 in the demos. Nice job picking those (and playing, of course!). I might have played some other things too, but those riffs were great representations of the tone I would be shooting for! If I am wrong and AMP 7 is the SL68, then the PT15 just made it much closer to my Christmas list! Problem is, in the nation's 4th largest city, the only Suhr dealer doesn't carry the amps! :+(( And I am loathe to buy this sight unplayed! Again, nicely done and thank you! So cool to have the Ampete set up!
It is extremely close, which shows how fantastic the PT15IR truly is as an amp! To my ears, #7 is just slightly more compressed, which makes me think it's the PT15IR. Regardless, phenomenal tone!
...to me, both sounding great but #7 is the sound, I like at most, hoping it's the PT15! Thanks for doing great videos, suitable for all levels of players!
They both sound amazing and with some mixing on the desk or inside a DAW you could get them even closer. If I had to guess, I think that "7" is the SL-68 and "1" is the PT15. The number "7" amp sounds a bit more round with less presence and for some reason I associated that with the slightly older plexi type sound vs. the newer PT15ir. In a mix, they would be so incredibly hard to differentiate. Great video !
You had me at Plexi! Great portrait of both amps and a good look at what the PT15 can do. BTW I think the SL68 was #7. The #7 was just a bit more open sounding and the #1 was little bit tighter and a little more focused.
Both great. Truthfully, too close for me to tell! To my ear it almost sounded like the amps were switched between the two riffs, so... But if I had to choose, 1 was plexi (slight edge in chunk and "middyness"), 7 was PT15IR (slight edge in bright and "punchyness").
i'm thinking 7 was the plexi, it has that "smeary" trebly high end in it that i recognize in my 50w I built. If that's the PT, then that's super impressive. both sounded great to me.
Both are amazing! Though if I had to guess... amp 7 is PT15 (ever so slightly tighter and clear) and amp 1 is the SL68. I'm guessing off of characteristics I know from my old JMP Marshall, though I may be completely wrong and listening for the wrong things. 😂 Amp 1 exhibits that slightly "unhinged" characteristic of those old amps, but it's super close between the both of them. I love the sound of old Marshall's and whichever one is the PT15, it nails that sound!!!
man up against a big open handwired, that kicks butt pete, just goes to show cabs mics pres all the sum of parts but the tone is there with the pt15 dude, thanks for this :)
I thought 1 was the SL-68 and 7 was the PT-15; I think 1 had more "bloom" in the lows but hey look forward to finding out which was which both sounded great to me. I think it would be my dessert island rig too lol.
From the demos where he had the IRs mixed two different ways, you could probably get closer. Honestly sounds like there’s just more speaker breakup captured on 1 and they should include that feature in the next PT to get even closer to the exact recording sound. Will it matter live, or for recording, though? It’s a great sound as it is. And no cab, mic, or preamp needed. I personally love it as is. Perfect for what I wanna do, in every possible way. I’d like to see inside, if they’re willing to let us look. I think it’s easy to guess, and won’t be long until it gets copied. That’s just the way things go.
They Both sound awesome Pete, a little different but both killer tones! Great playing as usual! PS. I'm still waiting for your VOX amp video you promised a long time ago ;)
Late to the party, but still apparently beverages left. Wow, great video AGAIN, Pete! May need to pick up a PT-15…with that dirty and the Bella clean side (if I’m correct?), what an amp.
Great video, Pete! My guess is number one (1) is the PT-15, and number two (7) SL-68, both sound excellent. I prefer the second by just a tad, whichever amp it ends up being.
I'm picking SL68 as amp #7 and the PT15IR as #1. There was more treble sizzle in amp #1 and a smoothness in amp #7. My preference is #7, but I can totally see where #1 would pop really well in a mix!
Both sounded good. To me, amp 07 had more hollow woody-ness to it, which I dig, and a little more girth on the low end. I'd say that was the SL68, but I'm not so certain that would put money on it. Again, both sounded very good.
cool stuff! Gotta love that Beating Around The Bush riff, it was one of the first riffs I figured out on my own when I was a kid (which was a very long time ago)
Fun video! No idea which is which. Mids seemed a bit more prominent on 7, with a bit more chime and top end on 1. Both sounded great, and i might prefer either depending on the context of a particular song.
I'm a bit late to this, but No. 1 immediately stood out as the SL68. It just was a tiny bit more "open" sounding, which is hard to achieve with a "smaller bottle" (6v6) lower wattage amp at that level of gain. But, what this does show you is that the PT15 would be absolutely fine at nailing the Marshall sounds in a bar/club/live situation. You just wouldn't be able to discern difference in a live environment with a full band going.
Logic would dictate that you number the amps from top of the closet to the bottom en then to the right. So I would say 1 is the SL68 and 7 the PT15. HOWEVER....number 7 sounds a little bit fatter in the bottom end and a pinch more dynamic, which make me think it is the SL68 because of the wattage (so maybe you switched them?). If it IS the PT15 then I would be seriously impressed!! So very close, but if I had to choose a sound for the rest of my life I would prefer number 7.....great video Pete!
07 is the Plexi. It has that throaty, more percussive sound on the lower tones than 01. That's my take at least. I'm not a Marshall guy AT ALL, so neither of those tones would be anything I would use. Can't wait to find out which is which! Awesome vid as usual, Pete!
Missed the part where you showed which was which and skipped to the playing... with closed headphones, couldn't tell a difference... fantastic playing as always and great tones Pete!!
#7 is the PT-15. A little more compressed compared to the 100w. I recently got the PT-15 head (waiting on PT-15 cab to ship) and I'm absolutely loving it.
I can hear the difference, but I don’t think I’d notice if it was one amp on one gig and the other for on the next gig. It doesn’t sound like anything that couldn’t be “fixed” on the console’s channel strip.
Man!, I loved them both, I think the PT 15 was 1 and the SL 68 was 7. When you first started a b ing them after explanation I heard more mids out of 7 in a riff. But actually that could have been the presence of the PT15, now I don't know. Anyway, sweet demo, and I can't wait to get a PT15. Some day.........
1 had to be the SL-68, it had the same amount of power but with less gain. 7 sounded a bit more beefy in the lows, it had refined mids, and overall a darker sound, which pretty much let me know which one was which . In a mix with a little eq who could tell though?
sounds great! 7 sounds a little bigger, but I couldn't tell you if thats the SL68 or the PT15 definitely close enough for any gig scenario I could imagine
Wow, thought I knew what I was hearing, but found a number of conflicting comments here. Nevertheless: #7 - SL68: At moments sounded more open and harmonic to me. #1 - PT15: for much of the playing I heard no difference, but twice I think I heard some separation.
I hear a very slight difference but would be guessing to pick PT15. Interesting tho that the mids are dimed on the SL while the mids on the PT are less than half.
I was talking about this very topic last night with my colleague, a bigtime AC/DC fan and occasional muso. It sounded pretty close to their mid-80's (and onwards) tones, particularly Angus'. I'd love to get the Suhr but they cost a lotta $$ - and idk if they are even available in Australia. One day...meanwhile: have a drink on me, Pete! .
Gonna go on record as saying that I think the PT is #07. It seems to have a slightly higher noise floor that I often find in EL84/6V6 versions of higher-wattage amps. Dunno what that's about but I've heard it many times (both the Mesa and Friedman mini vs. large amps exhibit this). Maybe I'm wrong!
Sounded really close but I thought 07 had the edge, bit more saturation and a tad brighter than 01, just had a lil more oomph;-) Both sounded great though;-)
No idea which one is which, preferred 7 by a wide margin. I'm a proud owner of the PT15 so I'll have my fingers crossed, been gigging and recording with the amp since it came out :)
Amp 1 has more mid going on than 7. I believe if you were to crank the mids up in 7 a bit more it would be there. That's what I hear anyway, along with the difference between el34s and 6v6s. But like you said, both are great tones Pete!
Both sound great! I slightly preferred the brighter (stiffer?) sound of 01. Honestly not sure whether it's the PT15 or SL68. I'll guess 01 is SL68 and 07 is PT15. I bet a little tweak of the presence knob would make it nearly dead even (in my room, on my monitors, etc etc).
Ahhh, you either had perfect timing or you’re a sneaky boy, Pete. I heard 7 flub, and that’s something a 15 watt amp can’t hide at high volume. They both sounded awesome though, and for what it is, they are really dang close.
Christian Spreadbury - I agree with the conclusion but it’s not the “wattage” directly. I think #7 has a bit more power tube distortion which would make sense if both amps are dialed in for the same volume. The post phase inverter master volume is dialed down on the 100 watt amp so the EL-34s won’t be distorting as much. Of course I could easily be completely wrong... Pete tell us the truth!
OK, they both sound great. 1 has a little bit more body, and 7 has a little more top. If I had to guess I would say 7 was the PT and the 1 was the SL but I don't know what the SL sounds like. They both have a great Marshall sound just with slightly different settings.
They are close in general tonality, however I greatly prefer number 7, it's fatter, has more low mids and sound more balanced all around. I actually think this might be the pt15 as I know that a post phase inverter master volume kind of yields thinner, slightly harsher tones when dialed down (as if the presence is dimed) on plexi style amps. Either way, after some high pass filtering in the studio they will be very similar.
I like 07 a bit more - the gain structure sounds pretty close. I think with an EQ both can sound identical. Anyway, in the mix it is almost impossible to hear the difference.
Amazingly close I couldn't tell blindfolded. 7 seems a tad gainier hence the difference? It's brighter on the high strings. The thing that bogs me is on the first riff I found the 1 having more "oomph" but the opposite on the second riff... I would say Marshall is 1 but it's like playing dice here :) good job Pete, it was fun! (and good job Mr. Suhr too BTW...)
They are super close. I think one sounds squishier so I think that's the sl68 because it was running 9n the Variac mode. Seven was the pt15 and a little tighter. That's my guess
Wow, mids at 10. I'm a little surprised, but hey, it works. :) My guess is that the SL68 is amp 7. It seems to have a particular juiciness. That Ampete switcher is AWESOME!
It's the way to make em open up and rock. They get gander, more aggressive and they bark and just sound right with mids on 10. It's not like modern amps with pre/post gain, where the EQ can all be around 5. EQ on a plexi is subtractive so if you want the amp to "have more headroom" and be cleaner/less aggressive you run everything low. Everything on 10 is the closest to having the eq out of the circuit.
@@PeteThorn Aha! Awesome explanation. I have only tweaked around on a plexi once, (JCM800 guy here) and it was a whole different beast compared to what I am familiar with. THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY!
Hey Pete, I know this an older video but well worth a re-listen - could you do a similar comparison between a SL68 and a 67 just to see how much difference there is other than output level ?
Pete this video is great! Love it! And I cannot say which is which amp... My first impression was PT15 on 7 and Sl68 on 1... But after listening again, I think reverse... Anyway, both amp sounds great!
Both sound great. I think 1. Is the PT-15, bit more preamp sound. 7 sounds like a 100w 68. I will say that I would never turn the post phase inverter master down. Not really fair to the tube and output transformer saturation, that is so important to the best guitar sounds.
well, I thought I had an opinion, but dang, they are so close - slight differences but how to know which one is which. I can't even pick a favorite, both sound great.
Amp #7 is the SL68 ! 7 has got that string clink thing going and is the holy grail non-MV tone. Now, if 7 is actually the PT, then we should all run out and get a PT immediately !
UPDATE! Time to reveal which is which- #1 is the SL68, #7 is the PT15! Thanks for listening and guessing!
PT is like more "crystal" than Plexi...imo...both are lovely amps thou ❤
Wow! Sounds amazing !!
Pete Thorn damn looks like the majority of us thought the “bigger sounding 7” was the sl68 but actually turns out to be the bloody pt15! Awesome
wauww..definitely sounds bigger..I pick 07 as the better one as well 🤟
So useful video !
I'm hoping the PT is 7, sounds more fun to play and has more going on. But either way I win LOL
I should have just agreed with you on the comparison. Id bet you had one of the best ears on that one. Cant go wrong either way. LOL
Big love for all the AC/DC riffs!
7 feels like the Plexi (sounds a lot like my Plexi clone which was built very close to spec compared to vintage Marshalls). There's a "thicker" thing going on with the saturation of the gain. They both sound awesome! Chasing fly farts as we say in the studio. I would go with the PT15 because of its versatility hands down.
I agree 100% on the desert island tone! I put EL34’s in my Boogie MKI reissue for that sound. Incredible tones there Pete!
01 - PT15 / 07 - SL68 Sounds so good either way Pete. Love it!
From the demos where he had the IRs mixed two different ways, you could probably get closer. Honestly sounds like there’s just more speaker breakup captured on 1 and they should include that feature in the next PT to get even closer to the exact recording sound. Thanks Pete for the demo on the amp and cabinet.
1 is the 100 watter I believe. Its brighter and more aggressive than the other one. Ever so slightly.
7 was the PT15! Great vid Pete!
Great video, Pete! My guess is number one (1) is the PT-15, and number two (7) SL-68, both sound excellent. I prefer the second by just a tad, whichever amp it ends up being.
I forgot to watch the reveal. 3 years later I am listening on headphones and discovered I was wrong! I like the PT15 better, both times!
You're insanely talented and all of your videos help players like me!! Don't stop and Rock Rock until you drop😎
cool stuff! Gotta love that Beating Around The Bush riff, it was one of the first riffs I figured out on my own when I was a kid (which was a very long time ago)

You just wouldn't be able to discern difference in a live environment with a full band going.
Pete! This is great! I just commented on your Live yesterday, letting people know your pt15 should do Plexi well. Great video
Ur signature amp is friggn ridiculous !!!!!......the tones are amazing !!!!.......well done my friend!!!!
#7 is the PT-15. A little more compressed compared to the 100w. I recently got the PT-15 head (waiting on PT-15 cab to ship) and I'm absolutely loving it.
Cool vid, Pete. Really good tones. One is definitely looser in the bass, but both are good. I liked the tighter one more myself.
No idea which is which, but 7 sounds a little brighter, and I prefer it for the extra headroom. Both are awesome!
I can hear the difference, but I don’t think I’d notice if it was one amp on one gig and the other for on the next gig. It doesn’t sound like anything that couldn’t be “fixed” on the console’s channel strip.

My favorite too. Hot, rockin', cranked plexi sound is the best!!! My Friedman Pink Taco does it amazingly well.
As the British say "Spot On" sounds perfect nice work Mr. Suhr and crew
sounds great! 7 sounds a little bigger, but I couldn't tell you if thats the SL68 or the PT15 definitely close enough for any gig scenario I could imagine
That was really close. It must have been tough to get the cooked up power section sound!!
Loop 1: SL68 - Lopp 7: PT15. Both great sounds, loop 1 has a little more highs and upper mids presence.
I was already sold on the PT 15 but now I really need one!! Whatever which is which it is close enough.
if i have to guess i'd say the 07 was the SL68, it just sound a little bit gnarlier, but they were so close i'd be stoked to use either. Great video.
I’m going with #7 being the 68, it has more girth to it, maybe because of the power section.
Cool post, thnx Pete.
They both sound great. Subtle difference in the nuance but really nice sounding on both.
SL68 on 7. Both sound great. The PT15 is revolutionary!
I’m guessing SL-68 - 1. I thought I heard a bit more bottom end that I also hear on my SL-67.
Great vid Pete -- both sound stellar -- close call!
No matter which is which, this just made me want a PT15IR even more.
Hmmm, I’m saying 07 is the Plexi. It has a bit more bottom end punch, but it’s hard to be sure!! Great video Pete
Wow, thought I knew what I was hearing, but found a number of conflicting comments here. Nevertheless:
#7 - SL68: At moments sounded more open and harmonic to me.

Sounded really close but I thought 07 had the edge, bit more saturation and a tad brighter than 01, just had a lil more oomph;-) Both sounded great though;-)
Great video. Now, how about putting the Line 6 Helix Amp models to the same test.... or maybe even the new Iridium.
Pete. I would like you to do a amp demo on the Peavey Ultra Plus 120 head. I think you might be surprised at the versatility of this head.
Insight and settings @0:00
A/B starts @5:15
Guessing 7 is the Plexi as it has a little more thump and 1 is the PT15 as it's a little more mid forward and compressed. But both sound great!

One is the Plexi is my guess,.. +++ for Beating Around the Bush! also, glad to see the hair is back Pete.. 😎
I like 7, because of a very slight mid presence bump. Don't know which amp is which. Both sound awesome though!
I think #1 is the SL68 because #7 is a tad more compressed, which could be explained by the wattage... But both sound great and the tone is so close!
Christian Spreadbury. I agree with you.
First one is the 68 its a little brighter. Both tones are great!
Wow, so close! If I had to guess, I’d say that the Plexi was 1 and Suhr was 7. There seems to be just a touch more presence on channel 7 to me.
I don't know which is which, but I think I preferred 7. It sounded just a little brighter to my ears and I like that. But yeah, they were close!
Great video, both great sounding amps 👍🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I think the PT15 is #1 and the SL68 is #7
# 7 is the PT - I think they are very close but then again I can hear a difference in the mid/bottom end.
Hope to see the PT50 vs your plexi and metal panel someday.
Pt15 is very nice but in my opinion you can play whatever you want and will sound good! Your hands are awesome
1 - plexi
7- pt-15
I think #7 is the Plexi. However Pete, GREAT tone on both fronts good sir!
Great tones from both! I think the Plexi is 07. Cheers!
I feel like 1 was the 68. both sounded fantastic !
Amp #7 is the SL68 ! 7 has got that string clink thing going and is the holy grail non-MV tone. Now, if 7 is actually the PT, then we should all run out and get a PT immediately !
Get out your wallet! Ha! U picked the PT
@@PeteThorn Amazing Pete ! That's what I wanted to hear !
Incredible tones! If I were to pick one it would be splitting hairs. The difference could be the difference between two different Plexis.
They sound close but a little different. Either way both of them sound great 👍
Pretty suhr that 1 is SL68 and 7 is PT15! ;-) Both sound killer!
Great show Pete thorn
I can't tell which is which... I love both tones. I want a PT15IR!!!!!!!!
