When searching for a 70s rock song that would be a good match for the tone of these Crush amps, Strutter stood out to me as the obvious choice. Orange amps are great for that KISS sound.
I love my orange crush 35rt, i’m an amateur guitar player who plays small shows so the 35rt is perfect for me, it’s loud enough to be heard even next to a metal drummer and i almost never worry about being too quiet, on the other hand because it’s only 35 watts even if i crank it the amp doesn’t impede on any other instruments so it’s the perfect range of dynamics for me
I got my eight year old a Crush Mini and a Squier Mini Jazzmaster for Christmas this year. I liked the fact the amp is battery powered and can’t produce a volume that would easily cause permanent and irreparable hearing loss. Sure it sounds pretty bad, but it’s got a usable sound so he can hear himself play without worrying about it at all. He can use my Rockerverb MKIII 100 and PPC412 under supervision. Everything has it’s place and the Crush Mini was a perfect choice.
Got my OR15 this year, and I coudn't be happier! It was my favourite amp from youtube, inspite of it's low power. The tone is incredible, orange amps rule!
I could also see this as a great platform for the dozens of modelers out there, for someone who just needs a good speaker but doesn't want to spend big money on a seperate cab and power amp, one of the big drawbacks of modelers is if you're running directly into a PA you're not getting that tone of "pushing air" in a physical space.
35RT has a huge amount of clean volume which could make for a fantastic pairing with a digital modeler if you want to get a more 'real' live sound out of it. A lot of people are using them as a clean platform for their pedalboards.
Not gonna get on the soapbox here, But I just want to say that I’m glad to see you back on the YT platform. Thank you Collin for making all of this TV grade content out of your heart for us all to enjoy and learn from
My first amp was an Orange Micro dark years ago thanks to your videos! I never got the big crush head because i turned into a Marshall lover but the Orange solid state stuff is the best there is these days. Especially since all the other stuff in the same price range is digital and when those break you can't fix them
Orange has such great products. They’re well built compared to competitors and sounds great too. I own the OR30, AD30, Rocker 15 Terror, Tiny Terror, Super Crush 100 and am always rationalizing why I need another handful more to add to my collection. Glad you seem to feel the same way and continue to make videos featuring their products!
I like how you mentioned the real usecases for the amps and examples of their best use! Peeps in the guitar community tend to focus on "bigger is better". Thanks for sharing this in that way!
I read a comment a while back from a guy who liked Orange amplifiers because they were wife-friendly, she liked them for the decor value. Much nicer than the usual black boxes apparently
It's good to see cheaper options for fellas who are just starting out. My first (and only) amp was made from a kit I bought online, fabricated into a speaker box I bought from the thrift store for a couple of bucks, with 3d printed knobs on the back, and a power supply I salvaged from an LCD screen.
Crush 12 was my entyr into the world of Orange. 35RT was the next fix then a microdark. Settled with a pair of 12" combos in the TT and AD15. Life is complete. Good vid man, informative as ever. Keep it comming.
I own a Orange 20RT and apart from the backpanel buzzing when I play a low tone (in higher volume settings on clean channel), it sound ridiculously good for the price. I use Mini TS for a clean boost and some modulation action with EHX Neo Clone, or tighten the dirty channel for thrashy goodness, or just chilling with blues etudes with my Klon clone (EHX Soul Food). Right now building my pedal board, and next is probably going to be Big Muff, so I can Hendrix it out a bit.
I changed the speaker in my orange crush 12 with a Jenson ceramic and it made a huge difference in sound. It was very mid range heavy and to much bass. Now it sounds really good and sounds louder to me.
Absolutely agree with your take on the crush 12, it was my first amp and it kinda took me years to understand it properly. It's a great little amp though, i still use it as my practice amp at home
My first amp was a crush 35 to practice with. Such a versatile amp whether it's clean or chuggy. I moved on to other amps like the vox ac30 but the crush series has a special place in my heart.
I wish amplifier manufacturiers would publish proper audio specifications, e.g. THD+N, SNR, Bandwidth, continous power, input sensitivity, head room, etc, etc in the same way as hi-fi amplfiers are - that way we could make sensible compariisons. It would also be good to know the frequency response and power handling of the loud speakers. I agree about the Orange Crush 12, I had one for a short time, it was horrible, the 'clean' channel had significant distortion, can't really complain though because it is very cheqp.
I brought a cheap crush amp second hand for a cheap stereo amp to go with my vox. I thought the clean channel made a brilliant pedal platform and was impressed for so little money
I love the crush series of amps. I love the no frills approach, much like quilter amps. I will always prefer a solid nad dependable analog solid state amp than a digital amp with a million options.
The Mini Crush is always on my pedal/pickup building & guitar setup bench, it's perfect for me to test out if what I'm working on is functioning properly, without waking up my wife or daughter.
For the past few days I've been looking for a new Orange amp (had few of those before), and a big thank you for this deep dive into them. The 35RT now doesn't seem as a good option for mostly playing at home, however, I'm still slightly tempted by bigger speakers and FX loop is a big extra. Thank you for the channels content and stay safe. Cheers
FX loop might be the deciding factor if you want to use the Crush distortion channel with a delay - I really struggled with having the delay pedal in the front of the smaller amps, but it sounded excellent through the 35RT FX loop. It is however a LOT of amp for home application - but sounds really nice when you can get it turned up.
I bought a CR60 on Reverb years ago and it's still an incredible amp. The only thing is I became disinterested in the Orange "fizz" or "hiss" on the gain and the boxiness of the gain as I tried to get a thrash tone. I'm looking to switch to an ENGL or something soon but I would still highly recommend these amps to nearly anyone. Absolutely crazy affordable and still sounds incredible for what it does
On of the biggest reasons for me not getting a Crush is that I already have a Katana, and can't justify another amp (especially on top of the 3 other amps I own right now) unless I win the lottery. Which sems especially unlikely, since I tend not to meet them halfway and buy a ticket.
Found a super cool Orange amp the Rocker 32 2X10 stereo tube combo. Thanks for posting this video of SS amps. It lead me to the 32. What I’ve been looking for. Like forever. I could 5 cable this with my Boss GT100 because it’s stereo.
Nice!! I've had a Crush Mini for almost 20 years, barely used exaxtly because of thát 4" crackle, but I simply never thought to hook it up to a proper cab... 🤣🤣🤣 Doing that tomorrow!!! Thanks for the tip 🤘
I had the Crush35RT and are are 2 things I didn't like about it: 1. The shared EQ for both channels didn't work for me. 2. The input jack is right next to the volume control, so if you're not careful the cable might mess with your volume mid-playing.
Came for Amps, got that boss delay demo for free😂 just happen to be gassing that one…. I had the ppc 108? And terror stamp amp pedal, but really didn’t like it (With pedals). I returned it and went with an sc20c. My opinion is meaningless however as I am crap I just love the sounds I get🤷🏽♂️ The look of orange gear is awesome!
still thinl blackstar id core series is one of the best practice amp , got everything you need for beginner or just bed room amp, i think orange probably the only brand you cant find a USB port on their amp, crush 20 did sound nice for the price and size.
I had a Crush 60 watter and honestly, it was one of the best things I’ve ever purchased. I traded it for a silverface Champ for my dorm room. Now that I’m wanting to gig again, I’m looking for one of those Super Crush amps. In your experience, are they reliable and loud? Cheers!
I had the Super Crush 100 in for demo a few years back - it was silly loud for the studio, so would have absolutely no issue handling itself at a live show when connected to a decent speaker cabinet. In terms of reliability - there is nothing in them that can fail, theoretically they should keep working forever. I've got other gear with the same opamps in them that have been going strong for almost 5 decades, the Crush will probably outlast all of us.
I’ve gotten a lot of shit from people cuz I used the orange crush mini for two years and didn’t upgrade til recently. I liked how small and portable it was, but also that when I got home I’d connect it to my karaoke machine to get a bigger sound out of it. It’s such a fun and stupid little amp. Funny thing is, i thought it was fine til a bunch of fuckin tone purists called me out on it. I’ve used this damn thing for street performing and at guitar club practice and I’ve gotten nothing but positive responses to it.
Really interesting for me for a similar price and imo better sound I still prefer my micro dark (although I do want to get the terror stamp as same amp but with a boost!) with ppc108 cab for home practise and it also has the balls for live if I put it into my Harley Benton g112 loaded with celestion speaker.
Oh boy, I was seriously considering getting the 35rt as my first serious amp (long term singer who now has to play guitar as well) but found a Fender Champion 100 second hand at the same price. I do like the Fender (never had it above 3, even playing outside last summer!) but I'm still tempted by the Orange. Have to get saving...
@@ScienceofLoud I had thought of that too, although a) it means carrying around a lot of gear and I'm not as young as you and b) knowing my bass player, he wouldn't be very happy! That said, I had the chance to use a Fender Pro Junior recently which was very nice, so now I'm actually thinking of getting one of those, and the 35rt and running stereo... Anyway, thanks for this video, your content is always interesting. Just kind of wish you could've made this particular video this two years ago!
I've actually been trying to make this video for years! Problem was Orange never had them all in stock to loan me because the Crush stuff is always selling too well! Can't blame them for prioritising their customers and retailers over me.
Ive got I. an orange crush 10. It has Bass, Middle , Treble, Master, Gain, 2 and Gain.1. That's it. It soundss amazing. The different sounds available with 2 gain knobs and a master. Why don't more amps have this?
I have an '83 fender yale reverb with gain, volume, and master volume controls, so the concept has been around a while, and it does make it easy for even a solid state amp to dial in a dynamically responsive "edge of breakup"
I'd like to know if you could do a loudness comparison between solid-state and valve amps with the same power rating, using identical speakers please? After all, a "watt is a watt", isn't it?
I think that they sound too out dated and old school. Reminds me of the early 80's solid state amps. But their tube amps are really good and sound great.
honestly i like orange amps better than the katana the katana is good but theres so many choices i end up playing with knobs instead of making music with the orange i just get going
i cannot stand 4in and 6in speakers. only exception would be if positive grid were to put some 6in speakers into their Spark 40, then it could handle the 40w of power that amp pushes out and it would sound better too. i cannot stand the sound of small speakers any other time tho. i would only accept 6in speakers in a spark 40. the stock 4in ones just arent enough to handle what the amp can do and i have never been able to enjoy a speaker any smaller than a 10in with a regular amp. the ppc108 8in speaker sucks, imo.
I had a 35rt for a while and didn't like it that much.. its very midrange focused .. no real treble or bass can be heard .. it's just good for one type of sound and you have to listen in person and then decide
What in the hell is an analogue amp? Tube amps are analogue, solid state amps are analogue but we don't call either analogue amps 😂. 5% of guitar players used modelers so we can't be calling anything other than modelers analogue amps (why would we make a weird distinction for something that is ubiquitous). That's the first time in 40 years of being a guitar gear nerd that I've heard that term. It's really weird!
You seem to be about 40 years behind in your terminology and understanding of guitar gear then. There are lots of digital amplifiers, modellers, plug-ins and software available now, to the point where a great many guitarists who have never owned analogue equipment. There are people who have been playing for years with only an audio interface and software on their computer. The beginner amp market is largely digital options like Katana, Spark, or Mustang as mentioned at the start of this video. Traditional analogue amps and pedals are no longer ubiquitous, it's something many players step into after spending time in the digital realm, or where a vast majority of touring artists have stepped away from for digital convenience.
@@ScienceofLoud5% of global sales. Check the numbers yourself. Nobody says analogue amps. You just say amps. The rule is the contrary......if you're using a modeler you specify that as it is BY A GIGANTIC MARGIN the exception to the rule. The amount of people using amps vs modelers on the planet today is thousands to one.
@billbones1000 where are you pulling that percentage from? 2005? I run a summer music festival, we put on 40+ rock bands across 3 days. The last few years I've made a point of counting how many bands use digital vs those using analogue amps. More of those touring bands are using digital units than are using analogue, and that gap is widening year on year. I've been playing guitar 20 years, everyone I knew then started out with a little Digitech or Zoom multifx, or a Line6 Toneport for the computer. Like I said to you, beginners now are using Katanas or Sparks - digital amps, or it's pure software. There are hundreds of free or inexpensive ampsim plugins people are using. I assume neither of these you are factoring into your outdated percentage. The world moved on, things are different now.
Gonna be real... I think the Orange Crush series is extremely overrated. Every time someone brings one of these into the studio I cringe. They lack definition in the midrange. They don't sit in a mix well. I'd rather have someone bring in a Boss Katana or something, honestly. There are good solid state amps out there. My favorite is probably the Peavey trans-tube amps from the 90's.
For beginner guitarists, or players on a budget, Orange Crush makes a fantastic entry point into the world of analogue amplifiers.

Have you ever tried the Joyo Bantamp Meteror II? It's their version of the Orange amps.
That sg neck repair is still one of the most impressive displays of guitar restoration I've ever seen. Good to see it's still holding up
I love how flawless it now looks on the videos, sometimes even I forget it was ever broken.
I keep forgetting it got repaired.

This video could have been handy 24hrs ago. I bought my son the CR60C for Christmas. What did I get myself into?
The 35RT has plenty of headroom already.
Ive got I. an orange crush 10.
"A little bit of reverb and being in tune is 90% of what it takes to sound good on guitar". As with so many things, the details go a long way.
Have you tried any Quilter Products?
I think that they sound too out dated and old school. Reminds me of the early 80's solid state amps. But their tube amps are really good and sound great.
Damn.. Nobody gives love to the Crush 60 Pro. I think the 60 Pro sounds better than the 120 and Super Crush 100. But sadly it lacks the headroom.
honestly i like orange amps better than the katana
the katana is good but theres so many choices i end up playing with knobs instead of making music
with the orange i just get going
Orange amps are best amps
dude im at haywards heath can i have one of those for christmas❤❤❤ the Crush 20 or 35 would be a big blessing
i cannot stand 4in and 6in speakers. only exception would be if positive grid were to put some 6in speakers into their Spark 40, then it could handle the 40w of power that amp pushes out and it would sound better too. i cannot stand the sound of small speakers any other time tho. i would only accept 6in speakers in a spark 40. the stock 4in ones just arent enough to handle what the amp can do and i have never been able to enjoy a speaker any smaller than a 10in with a regular amp. the ppc108 8in speaker sucks, imo.
The one thing I have hated from EVERY Orange amp I have tried is that they sound very compressed. These appear to be no different.
This channel used to be called CS Guitars right?
Yes
Yes, we rebranded to Science of Loud in early 2024
@@ScienceofLoud it's a good rebrand
I had a 35rt for a while and didn't like it that much.. its very midrange focused .. no real treble or bass can be heard .. it's just good for one type of sound and you have to listen in person and then decide
And here i was thinking of selling my 12 watt one 😅😅
Were you just looking for something bigger? Or was there something you didn't like about the 12?
I still like roland blues cube a lot more then this tho.
Nice nod to Kiss!! Love it!!
Omg im early
You got in super quick!

Yeah I didn’t get the Paid Promotion popup either…
horrible amp, horrible brand , it's on par with Fender Frontman 10
Buy what you like of course but they sound really good to me.
Gross amount of misinformation in this shill piece.
Do you want to qualify that statement?
Please, outline the misinformation; we're all fascinated to know where I was paid to be wrong about stuff...
Get outta here bro
@@ScienceofLoud Probably upset that he/she put ridiculous money into a big amp.
