3:41 "NOW YOU TOOK THE TOP RAD 1" Such English...much wow. It's amazing how the English translation didn't come out as well as they thought it would. That goes for almost every japanese game developer, like Sega, Taito, and Namco.
I never heard of this. It looks great for 1990 though. Each minute of the video there seemed to be a new effect I wasn't expecting and I thought: "IT DOES THAT TOO?!". A true technical gem. Really amazing piece of work.
***** Rad Mobile was an arcade game for Sega's System 32 board. The only port it ever got was to the Saturn (Gale Racer). The Genesis couldn't really handle superscaler games. A few were released on it like After Burner, but they're pretty crappy ports.
The dude saying "RAD MOBILE" sounds like Troy McClure. Also it's interesting how the driver has no problem stomping on the gas after getting in when he's still fixing his gloves...
I was born the year this game came out - it did not stop me though from completing a perfect run back in 1998. My dad would always tease me as I had to use 2 tokens (the price for one play) to win as he managed to get on with 1 credit (lucky bastard) and still manage a perfect run with my baby sister in his arm while he drove.
this game will always be remembered because of Sonic hanging in the front of the car ! Amazing game... can't remember how many hours i used to play this game in old game machines!
No-one does humongous sprite-scaling arcade beasts like these anymore, and damn it I want these dinosaurs back!Ah, back when games were still fun and easily accessible. Looks like I'll be getting the old Saturn out tonight then...
Adam Mcvay I thought that was bad until I heard the constant screeching of PS2's version of Virtua Racing in their SEGA collection. It's too bad, because it was a graphically pretty update, but the unrelenting tire screeching made the game unplayable for me.
Adam Mcvay Haven't played VR on MAME in a while, but from what I remember, it has a lot of flickering polygons and the camera tends to get kinda wonky.
Well, is not a "Perfect Race", but man... it's a hell of a playthrough. Lots of memories came to my mind. I never was good enough to play this game, I was like 8 years old when I saw it for the first time. Thanks for this.
+rogelio proa When "Watch Out Behind You" appears, even though it sounds a bit muffled, I think it's saying "Hey you, pull over!" This game seems that it shares the same transmission SFX as the Super Monaco GP Arcade Game BTW
If the players Rad Mobile car had excellent engine, tires, steering, and fender bumpers upgrades as if it is in the Outrun special edition for Nintendo Switch is something great to have. Perhaps that Rad Mobile car might speed up to 324 km/h as an option as if the upgraded Outrun Ferrari speeds to 220mph.
My favorite arcade game ever, I love how sega used sprite scaling everywhere, even for road. Plus The soundeffectsvare great, and the music is very good for two sega megadrive soundchips. (The audio is little bit muffled in this video)

Very first ever arcade game i ever played first time only stage 2 later stage 4 but when i got mame beaten it twice, first the shortcut, second truly all the stages.
Every time I play this game on my tablet, it runs a bit choppy and I have a hard time trying with the controller configuration, especially when I have to turn the lights or wipers on.
Yes-one does humongous sprite-scaling arcade beasts like these anymore, and damn it I want these dinosaure back!Ah, back when games were still fun and easily accessible. Looks like I'll be getting the old Saturn out tonight then
I love how they clearly put together stages for San Francisco and Miami, realized that there was no place for them in the itinerary, and just stuck them in the Midwest. But why'd they bother with a St. Louis stage and not have the damn arch?
Another great arcade game that never made to home consoles :( Gale racer was not a perfect arcade port. To me Sega had so much potential if all their branches, namely the U.S. and Japan branches could work together. This game would have been perfect on the Sega 32X. The Saturn and the 32X/Neptune could have been 2 strong pillars for Sega and not the fumbling mistake it turned out to be. The mistake was in how the two systems were handled and not the hardware itself. The 32x/Neptune could have been home to all the super scaler arcade games like this. To this day many of these games never made it to home consoles. The Saturn could have been for everything else including unique games like Nights, Panzer Dragoon and other games that required more memory from the CD. I love my 32X but when I look at it, I am reminded by so much potential it had. It is much more powerful than the Neo Geo but look at how far that went with the proper support. Oh Well. BTW I did own a Saturn as well and loved it for what it was.
Doing separate attract mode videos has been something I've thought about. I usually try to show at least part of attract mode in my gameplays already. The bits I left out from Rad Mobile aren't too interesting. It just cycles between the title screen and gameplay without any music. Once in a while the text "Trans American Speed Race" will scoll across the screen, but that's it. As for a Rad Rally playthrough, that would be kinda boring. Lotta straight, wide roads. Drive straight and win.
How did you get this game to work so well with name? Did you use a steering wheel? What control and What settings do you use? I loved this game as a kid but mame version is tough with an analog stick.
Mightywhiskaz No, I used a controller. There are instructions in the video description on how to configure MAME for this. It isn't a perfect setup by any means, but it's the best I could come up with.
anyone knows what the hell the Cop says? I played this game (and finished using all the track variations) my whole childhood and never understood what he say.
Diego Martin del Pozo This game was released in the early 90's, even before the first game of sonic the hedgehog. So it's not surprising the sfx to be so muffled.
@@Der.Geschichtenerzahler As I said at other comment, system 32 arcade board had 2 yamaha soundchips (Used in sega megadrive) and 1 ricoh chip(Used for sound effects, also used in sega cd addon)

Was there another later version of this? I clearly remember a normal arcade cabinet but with a wheel. The graphics looked better, more detailed dashboard, the bonnet had more detail. Also the first stage was a night course with rain.
If you're using MAME you need to map the steering to the D-pad, or else use an analogue driving wheel. I forget the reason why, but the auto-centering for this and Power Drift will be messed up if you try mapping steering to something like an analogue thumbstick on a gamepad.
So this is where Sonic discovered speed as his life purpose.
The blue hedgehog was swinging instead of running, but I agree.
Edit: He probably was fast in 1990.
That blue guy swinging around looks interesting. They should give him his own game series.
That's what SEGA dudes thinking back then
Who knows? He might become just as well known as that red guy from Nintendo.
Hmmm what would be a good name for him....oh Sonic The Hedgehog sounds like a good name
@Horizonshot Yeah, the blue guy should also collect some rings!

In the arcade version of Rad Mobile, when your driver gets arrested by the police:
