Game Review & Impressions
---------------------------------------------------
Released in 1990, Rad Mobile was the first of Sega's arcade titles to use the firms System 32 arcade hardware. Although this would be the final generation of firm's "Super Scaler" sprite scaling technology, it was also Sega's first arcade board based around a 32-bit architecture.
From a technical standpoint, Rad Mobile is incredibly impressive for the time of its release. The game's USP is delivering a realistic and uninterrupted racing experience in the first-person, including wet weather and night-time driving conditions. Certain stages feature roads with high-banked curbs which cause the viewpoint and cockpit of the player vehicle to tilt and rotate in the corresponding direction.
As for the the game structure, its closest to that of OutRun and Hang-On in that the player participates in a point-to-point race through different climates and environments. Players participate in an interstate rally across the U.S. from West to East coast, taking in the sights and sounds of industrial zones, rail yards, rocky mountain passes and secluded forests.
Unfortunately, the technical ingenuity can't make up for the fact the game is actually rather dull. The opponent cars zoom off into the distance or rubber band constantly as the game enforces catch-up to deliberately prevent the player from building any discernible lead for too long. On the one hand, I can understand the need to keep up the pretence of challenge and excitement, but even putting in a flawless driving never produces the kind of satisfaction you'd expect for mastering a game.
As a technical showcase, Rad Mobile is further evidence that Sega was without peer in the arcade space at this time, but it's also a reminder that graphics aren't everything. Despite being 3 years old at this point, OutRun was, in my opinion at least, still THE driving game to beat.

Ah, yes. My favorite Sonic game: Rad Mobile.
i completed this game without continuing but the cops r so annoying
First appearance of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sega's first 32bit arcade game.
When there were no running and jumping animations for this hedgehog and probably his name wasn't Sonic yet.
@@illegalquantity I bet it was, Sonic 1 released just a few months later.
If sonic appeared in this this Makes It a Prototype Sonic 1 Lololol
@Jacob_Spence Yes cause PlayStation and Saturn and Sega Genesis 32X
I remember playing this in the arcade with my dad as a kid at around 7 years old. Once both of us could beat the game, it became a contest to see who could do it using the fewest quarters. My record was a simple perfect run on 2 quarters but the old man had to one-up me and do it on 1 quarter (he got lucky there was one in the machine already) AND drove the whole run with one arm as he was holding my infant little brother at the time. Good memories indeed.
Excellent story 😊
looks better than a lot of early polygon racers. also Sonic's first appearance!
It's all the details that do it, the rain in particular is impressive with all the little details, like how it takes a few seconds for the driver to turn on the windscreen wipers.
@@KingOfElectricNinjas Yeah about that, that’s actually a manual input afaik, so the player has to press the button for wipers or headlights during certain sections
The last bit where the traffic cop explodes to reveal an inflatable costume to disguise a race queen was priceless.
Sonic's best game: Rad Mobile, a truly masterpiece.
I played this back in the mid 90s in Chicago IL USA at a local putt-putt amusement place (large sit-down cabinet) and remember this being the hardest Sega racer I'd ever played! Looking back, aside from Capcom's "Slipstream" (built on Sega's expert sprite based hardware), I remember Rad Mobile being Sega's most ambitiously "realistic looking" arcade sprite-based racer yet, just as Sega finally let go and embraced 3D polygonal graphics. You can see the little details they put into this game to give it a "real racing" feel on a spite-based format.
I used to love playing this one with the moving cabinet. The sounds were really immersive.
Played this in the arcades many times. On the Springfield level where you drive on the railway track; you see the train catching up in your rear view mirror. If you bring your car to a standstill you don't actually get hit by the train. The train stops as well.
I'm glad this arcade scaling monster was available on the Astro city mini. this bring me back a lot of arcade memory.
That sonic Doll in the Car 👍👍👍
What if I told you that this was his first appearance in a video game?
It's popping is very distracting and irritated me along the race
@@gamesquared2551 it was a previous Easter egg.
@@Matthew_Pinto-ai Rad Mobile predates Sonic 1 by a year
that dangling blue doll thing is so cute, i hope someday they'll make a game with that character
Sonic's First appearance Rad Mobile .
I Really Like how they put Sonic on the
Nearest top of the Windshield as a little Keychain 😂
the arcade i used to local had the DX cabinet with the seat that shifted left and right when you turned, it reminded me of Galaxy force 2 which was also made by Sega and had a full 360 rotating seat+screen, thanks for sharing this great Sega Gem with us and i'll catch ya next race!
This was fun to watch. During those days I spent so many quarters on Street Fighter 2, Outrun, Turbo Outrun, and other games. I remember not having a lot of playing time with Rad Mobile because not every arcade had it. And when I did find it, IIRC it was multiple quarters to play. I don't think I ever got past the 2nd or 3rd stage
I always thought it was so cool how you could manage the headlights and wipers. Good memories
You can see a little sonic hanging from the car
Great Game Review & Impressions as always! As I had little arcade access I don't feel nostalgia and spend more time reading your piece about the game than viewing gameplay itself. Details you put into review are what's keeping me here
The first time that sonic appear before the first sonic game arrive in 1991 and a all franchise arrive since
The voice at the end saying 'you'll never catch me' sounds like the same guy in Sega Bass Fishing.
Father of Need for Speed.
that ending though...
Yeah, what the fuck
Gotta get you someone that loves you as much as 80's-90's Sega loved cross country driving games
SO, THIS IS THE GAME WITH THAT SONIC DOLL! I was thinking that I had imagined that up!
Looks good, once I will try it.
Makes me want to watch Encino Man.
WHEEZIN' THE JUICE
When he heard "Rad Mobile" 👀
That was Rad!
It is pretty rad
The First Prototype Appearance of The Fast Blue Blur Himself Sonic The Hedgehog
Perfect
I remember seeing this in the arcades along the Eastern coast a year after sonic came out on the megadrive
I like how Chicago has palm trees in here
Cool upload. Gem ❤
I was thinking what is that in the back of the car when you see the full view of the car at the end. The mother-in-law seat? XD
I remember 1st time playing it Summer 93 and loving it plus thinking if as spinoff or another sequel to Outrun
Joguei muito no fliperama! Só chegava no final pegando os atalhos e passando as fases faltando 1 segundo.
E vc não encontrou o sonic ?
heiii... i rember this games... i played @sega arcade 94 95 🤩
i watched ppl playing this game in arcades in late 90's (1992) and all failed in the first raining stage
If you look up you can see sonic this was his first appearance also first 3d 1 too
Did Yu Suzuki worked on this?
While credit was given to Suzuki for this game, it was actually Sega AM3 that developed the game.
I wonder if the 32X could have handled this game 🤔
No wheezing the juice!!
In this game some VW beetle appears...but nobody see it..
SSのゲイルレーサー懐いな…
Way to go linkovich chemofski.....thats encino mans name in the movie Brendan fraser the ice man
7:58 This From Cussan
And that's why it's sonic first appearance
yeah
idk why they used him as a little keychain
Is the top speed of the car real 172 km/h. Or is it faster?
Encino Man (1992), everybody? Link (Brendan Fraser) playing this game.
If that game goes on Nintendo Switch, including Turbo Outrun must happen as soon as possible. However if that Rad Mobile car is as fast as an Outrun 1984 Ferrari must speed to 293km/h making that game give Outrun a lesson.
lemme wonder where the development started ...
Cannonball Run the arcade game minus the bandit.
SEGA please remake on PS5; ping me I'll give you a hand...
It's rad
Sega
sonic the hedgehod in Inside in car (First Apperance)
its funny that sonic appeared sd before his 2d games and his first 3d game was not even a sonic game
a então Rad Mobile é a inspiração não-intencional para o Famoso jogo de corrida da EA Games Need For Speed The Run.
Gaminami anime month
It's not like Road Fighter on Nes
I have remade this car on Lego 2K Drive:

Wtf
I can understand why I've never heard of this game.
hilariously this is my first arcade game ever
Um, WTF is wrong with this? It looks pretty fun to me
Obviously the programmers behind this game never took geography classes. Since when did Chicago ever have palm trees or even cruise ships? Palm trees wouldn’t survive in the harsh winter weather and it’s impossible to have a cruise ship on Lake Michigan. Caves in Indianapolis?! Roads being way up high in Las Vegas, or banked roads on normal public streets? Kinda makes your head spin….
Still better than Turbo Outrun. Incidentally, I majored in geography in college.
They could have that stuff just open your mind.
Sega's CEO at the Time believed that America was "Unsafe" and would not allow Sega Employees to Visit the US, so they kind of had to make it up as they went along.
Encino man😂😂😂😂
Wtf
