I think a lot of it has to do with the difficulty of adding fade-in rendering since that requires transparency, something that was difficult but not impossible on the Saturn. Contrary to popular belief. One game that managed to work around this was Sonic R using a method called "12 layer transparency". Gamehut made a video about it called Sonic R's impossible fade or something like that. It goes into detail as to how they did it. It's unfortunate these kinds of tricks weren't more common throughout the Saturn's life.
This game os awesome. I would love to play this again on a deluxe cabinet. Back in the day I was in love with this game. Sega blew every other arcade manufacturer away in the arcades and this game was a prime example. I played this so much that I could finish this game with one credit.
There's only a 4 year gap between the System 32 arcade board (1990) and the Saturn (1994). There's not quite as large a tech gap as you'd expect either, comparing expensive high-end arcade hardware to consumer grade home hardware, particularly at a time when Sega was probably pouring in more money into developing their arcade boards than anyone else in the industry. The Saturn port should have been much better though. The VDP1, the main graphics chip on the Saturn, was practically built for this sort of game, where the display is mostly built up with scaled sprites.
I think the problem was the Saturn port tries to update itself by having 3D models that the original arcade version lack, if it was all 2D like the Arcade then this would of been perfect, still not a bad version either way. :)
Sega should have gone with 2D car sprites instead. The 3D car models take more power to process, so I think they made a trade-off here. I'd take a longer draw distance over 3D cars. Still, it's not bad.
@@JudgmentStorm Actually no and yes, the 3D car models are made out of more sprites that are mirrored, thanks to this, quad models take less VRAM, than multiple car sprites.
Rad Mobile was released in 1991 and was the first 32bit game Sega ever developed and Gale Racer was the first driving game released for the Sega Saturn. Maybe that`s why they couldn`t handle the port that well back in the days.
Real confused as to why this isn't arcade perfect on Saturn, well it's almost there, but who cares I got this running on an original Xbox on MAME x ....and yup it's arcade perfect :) love this game even more than Link in Encino Man lol
Saturn version uses the polygon maybe, but arcade version uses sprite. That’s the different. That’s the why saturn version’s title is changed, I think.
These games are finally starting to get official home releases although they are kind of uncommon being on the astro city mini and rad rally on the outrun arcade1up
@@RetroMMA its actually an illusion. even the falling off road is all 2D sprite scaling. Check out Galaxy Force II for arcade/saturn. The entire game has a 3D feel but its all 2D
As an addition to my original comment, I can also say that owned gale racer on my modded dreamcast and the draw distance was abysmal!!!! I gave up!!!!! Just an FYI!!! ✌️
Arcade is better, no contest really, but the music is much better in Gale Racer. A very underrated soundtrack. Gale Racer on the Saturn plays great using a 3D controller.
Now we have the sega astro city mini to bring the arcade experience home!!! Finally!!! Paired with a magic s pro (so you can use any usb controller!!!) and its a great freakin time!!!! 👍
I wonder if the Saturn version stuck to scaled sprites for the opponent cars instead of the 3d polygonal models it uses, if it could have stuck to 60fps like the Arcade version? I guess we'll never know! SAD.

This is what you get when you do not program a game to its system's strengths. Instead of going polygonal, they should have used sprites like the arcade version. The Saturn's frame rate and horizon draw rate were terrible.
Sonic The Hedgehog Rad Mobile was in every arcade in 1990. It was usually a sit down cab on a mount, kinda like a mini ride you could jump into, that would rotate left and right.

Never understood why the draw distance on Saturn was ruined, the machine was perfectly capable of running this easily without sacrificing graphically.
Agreed.

Patrick Decarvalho I agree it could have been done better. They used polygons instead of sprites because 3D was all the rage when Saturn came out.
I think the problem was the Saturn port tries to update itself by having 3D models that the original arcade version lack, if it was all 2D like the Arcade then this would of been perfect, still not a bad version either way. :)
i think Sega did a quick adaptation, the Saturn needed new games in 1994
I would have loved to play this on Saturn back in the day, they didn't release it in the U.S. though.
Arcade version is 60fps and has longer draw distance, while Saturn version looks like it's running at 30fps and has shorter draw distance.
....you forgot 3d car models on Saturn too.
Basically everything is better on arcade except for music. Love the music in Gale Racer.

Did you know that Sonic the Hedgehog's first game appearance is in this game (arcade)?
peristrojka nope. You can see his cameo as a key chain on the top
Mighty the armadillo and ray the flying squirrel appear as well
Yup. I the arcade version was released early 1991, just a few short months before Sonic 1 was released on the Genesis.

Crappy draw distance and Stage 6 is freaking hard!
The game was awesome PLUS it's the very first game with Sonic the Hedgehog!

If Sega could remake this for PC, Switch, and PS5, that'll be great with options to switch between Saturn and Arcade graphics.
it seems to me that the arcade cars are 2d sprites, vs 3d models in the sega saturn version.
+Felipegcs that's true. nice find.
The environments, on the other hand, were 3D as evidenced by the falling off the roads in the last stage.

Did not expect the original to trounce the Saturn port so thoroughly. Apparently, the Saturn hardware simply wasn't up to the task.
I think it was up to the task, but it was very earliy, ruished port.
Yea Saturn version looks unfinished
Pretty dam good effort on the saturn the draw distance is just not quite up to scratch.
forgot how trucks overtake you at 240km/h
The only thing this game is missing is a 3rd person (behind the car) view.
You only drive from 1st person. Loved this game back in the day.
System 32.
I like the saturn version.
Same! It's not perfect, but for a very early Saturn title It's pretty good!
Since when did America get crazy sky roads? Want them built over here now....
I prefer the arcade because of the soundtracks and car design, but sega saturn version is not a bad port.
I've only played the saturn version and it's challenging dude I've gotten towards the end of the game and didn't quite beat it

Yes it could have been better on saturn, but it is far from the disaster described in the reviews at that time...
arcade I think IS better in general on Game but Graphics are more reals on saturn

Saturn version feels like it was unfinished basically.
It' funny how sonic never stops swinging even if you are stationary!!.....lol
Arcade greater distance
