I'm amazed that this video was shot in one take. The utter simplicity of it is what makes it work.
First saw this video as a kid, on mtv's alternative nation or 120 minutes - you know, back when mtv had actual music. Blew my young mind. Still does today.

The background violins are ripped off / copied from "Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten" by Arvo Pärt. Which is one of the most moving elegies ever written. Beautiful and haunting as you say. Look it up here on RUclips. A good choice for your funeral music! I would attend :)

found this band through a friend when I was using drugs (the bad kind) everyday and lead a very bleak and disturbing life. here I am 10 years later living a different life full of meaning and sober with my thoughts this band is still as profound and I connect with the music all the same.. though may appreciate it more

As I have been, so many times before with Neabauten. Thrilled with unexpectation. Neubauten will always be great. Cheers to you again, Industrial pioneers, The sounds of, never before. Expos , Vancouver. 1986. A great performance you did. At the beginning of the show. The audience movement. Gave us near front row seats. At the beginning of second track. Mom's and Dad's took their kids away leaving us with all the good seats after being stuck in the back. Once they realized that,,, Einsterzende Neubauten ,,, it is not traditional German music. LOL.. Yeahhh. A brilliant show it was.

Almost 12 years exactly when this video came out, such a beautiful song and such a meaningful music video even if he is just standing there, he makes standing in one place for five minutes really meaningful.
Twelve years? It is on "Ende neu" album from 1996.
History began in 2005
His minimal activity is significant. It illustrates his prestige as opposed to mass popularity I think. When he waves off his camera crew at the end of the video it indicates the exact same concept of power vs. showmanship. It is subtle but his visual artistry in this video is thematically very consistent. Which reminds me, I suspect him of pulling the strings on the recent rash of K-Pop "enigmas".

What if it's just raining a little bit? Will he still be in the garden? How much rainfall constitutes "pouring down" for the purposes of this song?
In the garden there Is no in between, the Rain pours down in copious amount, abruptly. Otherwise, blue Sky all the way to the gates of the garden.
What if I don't especially want him, but go nonetheless to the garden. Will I still find him? (assuming that it isn't pouring down with rain)
If it's just a little drizzle, you should find him there. I wonder, though - what if it isn't raining, but a mighty hailstorm? Or even a blizzard? He'll stay out in that nonsense, but not if it's merely raining?
I think a lady at the Louvre might be able to answer that for you.

Yeah. He's directing the video. It's a subtle way of establishing that he's in charge, unlike some major celebrities who are worth half a billion dollars but really there's a gun and some cue cards behind the scenes.
