Jane was great in V The Final Battle. She had more scenes in the Final Battle then what she did in the original. In the Final Battle, you got to see her character more often which was great. She had some really great scenes. I love the scene where she confronts Pamela her rival, shoots her first only wounding her and before she finally kills her, Diana says to her, consider this an early retirement. I didn't realize Diana had a sense of humor until that moment.

she is like many people in this world who puts on a mask to hide their weakness fears and suffering

V creator Kenneth Johnson, who wrote the basic outline of the script for Final Battle but then left the project over some creative differences with the network, was not too thrilled with this scene. He said that basically, the dialogue is the same as he had written it, but the execution was meant to be different, with Diana showing a lot more emotion. Here's the quote from the interview:
"Then, I watched Janie Badler twirl her mustache through the whole scene before she kills him. The way we had written it, Diana was really showing some vulnerabilities. She really had been moved and touched by this whole situation with the priest, and she was scared by it because she didn't want to feel these things. When she killed him, there was sweat on her brow and she wasn't doing an impersonation of a Republic serial bad guy. It originally had real depth and character, and all that was gone"

  • @dswynne
    @dswynne 3 года назад +26

Notice that Diana didn't outright kill the priest, in order to prove the point that "power" lies in the hands of those who holds the gun. Diana also knew that the priest was using his religion as a "weapon" for control, given how opportunistic he was. That offended her the most, because it was dishonest display of power. Personally, I don't think that this scene was "anti-religious", but more of a critique about how religion has been used to control others. Diana clearly was curious about the human religion, but felt that her curiosity was being used as a "vulnerability" by the priest for his own ambitions. Nope to the priest, but brilliant scene.

You really put a lot of thought into that I would like to come in about religion controlling people that they can do that when you have a relationship with Jesus is about salvation. Now you also mention that the power lies in the hands of those who hope the guns. And that’s why the far left is crying to disarm us. Exodus 14:28a
"28a *The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen and all the host of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea;"*
"Mark's imitation also retains some of the distinctive traits of Odyssey, insofar as both stories place monsters in caves, grazing animals on the mountains, and neighbors at the scene. ...Finally, just as Odysseus told Polyphemus to tell others who it was who blinded him, Jesus tells the Gerasene to tell others who it was who healed him."

"Detailed analysis of the traditions shared by Matthew, Mark, and Luke provides strong support for the view that Mark provided the template that Matthew and Luke revised, both correcting and smoothing out its language and expanding the Jesus material it contained."
The New Oxford Annotated Bible-NRSV, pp. 1380
The anonymous author of Mark (named out of early church tradition) hints to the reader that it's entirely a parable in which the meaning is an inside secret.
      Mark 4:10-12
"10 *When he was alone, those who were around him along with the twelve asked him about the parables. 11 And he said to them, "To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables; 12 in order that 'they may indeed look, but not perceive, and may indeed listen, but not understand; so that they may not turn again and be forgiven (Isa. 6:9-10).'"*
More examples of Mark using the OT to flesh out his narrative:
      *Mark 1:16-17*
"16 And passing along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon *casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men.”'*
      Jeremiah 16:16a
"16a *“Behold, I am sending for many fishers, says the Lord, and they shall catch them;"*
      Ezekiel 47:10a, :10c
"10a *Fishermen will stand beside the sea;" "10c fish will be of very many kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea."*
      1 Kings 19:19-21
"19 So he set out from there, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was plowing. *There were twelve yoke of oxen ahead of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle over him.* 20 He left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, "Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you." Then Elijah said to him, "Go back again; for what have I done to you?" (compare Mat. 8:21-22) 21 He returned from following him, took the yoke of oxen, and slaughtered them; using the equipment from the oxen, he boiled their flesh, and gave it to the people, and they ate. *Then he set out and followed Elijah, and became his servant."*
      *Mark 4:37-41*
"37 And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 *But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care if we perish?”* 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, *“Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?” 41 And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?”'*
      Jonah 1:6, :11-17
"6 The captain came and said to him, *“What are you doing sound asleep? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps the god will spare us a thought so that we do not perish.”*
"11 Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea was growing more and more tempestuous. 12 He said to them, *“Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you; for I know it is because of me that this great storm has come upon you.”* 13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring the ship back to land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them. 14 Then they cried out to the Lord, “Please, O Lord, we pray, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life. Do not make us guilty of innocent blood; for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.” 15 *So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 Then the men feared the Lord even more, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows. 17 But the Lord provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights."*
      Psalm 107:23-29
"23 *Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the mighty waters; 24 they saw the deeds of the Lord, his wondrous works in the deep. 25 For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea.* 26 They mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths; *their courage melted away in their calamity;* 27 they reeled and staggered like drunkards, and were at their wits’ end. 28 *Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out from their distress; 29 he made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed."*
"A raft of scholars, including Randel Helms, Thomas L. Brodie, John Dominic Crossan and others, have shown again and again how this and that Gospel passage likely originated as a Christian rewrite of this or that Old Testament passage. What one Testament had Moses do, the other had Jesus do. Fill in the name. What did David do? Joshua? Elijah? Elisha? Turns out Jesus did it, too, and even in the same descriptive words."

Ya know guys, I understand wanting to point out the horrible things mentioned in the Bible (not that the Bible condones all of it. SOME of it is just history). And I understand people wanting to criticize the mistakes of organized religion, so as to not repeat the mistakes of the past.
Sometimes people of any belief system need to get off their high horse. That includes Christianity. But it also includes Islam and Judaism. And yes, secular athiesm. Maybe you guys aren't a "dogmatic religion" but you can sure act like it sometimes (hey, you become what you hate. Let that sink in, Athiests. I-and even some other athiests-are tempted to call you the "secular inquisition"). And it seems very few of you have the balls to criticize Talmudic Zionism because you don't want to be anti semitic. Only Christians and some muslims do that, right? Yeah, not prejudiced at all.
But in all your talks of hating religion and the Bible, what have you.
A lot of things you people say is downright legit hate speech and prejudice. Seriously, it stopped being intelligent and constructive years ago. A lot of you are just being disrespectful because you can, and picking on religious people over what some OTHER religious person did, usually centuries ago.
Way to be progressive, guys. Way to be progressive. Tolerance my ass.
Hey, isn't the definition of genocide include religion? As in if you try to wipe out a religion, it's genocide? Just think about that for a moment.
When you make the move to constantly undermine and cause hatred against a religion, you are committing a certain aspect of genocide. (In an abstract sense, of course). I find this terribly hypocritical and short sighted.
Go ahead, keep talking smack about all religion like we all are brainwashed by the same thing (have you seen all the denominations? Are you kidding? We're not all in agreement, buddy!) While you repeat the ills of society brought about by humanity, but blame it on religion, I-somebody who's not even that religious, will go through religion to give to charity. While you guys bitch and moan and insult and complain and whine about not enough people giving to the poor or trying to help the oppressed, I'll go give to charities-many of them church based-that I KNOW help out the poor and those that are sex slave victims.
If you want to change the world, singling out religion is just shooting yourself in the foot. That's like putting Iran under a microscope for it's potential to use nukes while completely ignoring Israel's apocalypse armory.
Besides, if religion is part of the problem then it's also part of the solution. How do you make antivenom? With venom. What sometimes eats poisonous snakes? Non poisonous snakes who have venom tolerance (like King Snakes). Otherwise you're just singling out one aspect of society to be your whipping boy and pay for their AND everyone else's mistakes.
Meanwhile I listen to you complain about racism, intolerance, and injustice and then you go and bully an entire belief system for what pretty much a minority did....Cuz that's fair.

"Besides, if religion is part of the problem then it's also part of the solution. How do you make antivenom? With venom. What sometimes eats poisonous snakes? Non poisonous snakes "
Lmao...that makes no sense. "You get rid of religion with religion, but atheists need to stop acting so religious!"
That was your message, let THAT sink in. Dingus.

Dude, honest feedback. Not thinking I'm better than you, but when you reply with insults and act like passion is a bad thing, that kind of makes me think I'm right.
The reason I'm on my "high horse" is because I'm reading a lot of comments here about how all religious people deserve to be shot. That's hate speech. If I said that about blacks, Jews, or gays, you would think I was wrong.
No, seriously, those are the comments I'm responding to. The jerks who say "YEAH! I'm so glad she shot that religious guy! That's what we need to do here on earth."
I mean seriously, you say that about that guy in this fictional TV show, and in that TV show the religious guy getting shot is part of the resistance against the fascist "reptilians." And now people are cheering on the Nazi Lizard Queen just because she shot a religious character-even though in that TV show, the religious character was an active member of the resistance and pushed for Visitors to see humans as equals?
You prove me right. You guys want an abstract genocide. It's hatred for religion. Even if you have your reasons, that hatred will poison you. And we'll have the same monster but with a different face.
You guys sound like you want a country similar to Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Emphasis Soviet Union. You just want religious people dead, because of stuff that happened years ago or because some douche bag with a cross around his neck said something you don't like. Homosexuals get mistreated in communist countries, to btw. I read it in your comments. Don't even deny it. It's hatespeech. Plain and simple. You hide behind the fact that religion is unpopular right now because you're a bunch of cowards, bullies, and children. You know the ACLU has your back and if anybody tried to do anything in response you would label them as theocrats. You're the people imposing on others, not me.

Besides, my analogy with the snakes makes perfect sense. The non venomous snakes can eat the venomous ones. So some are good. And if you get bit by a snake, they're going to use snake venom to make anti venom. That's been simple science for years. Maybe you should have paid better attention in 1st grade science class.
But hey, when smart people do something smart, dumb people think they're crazy. So thanks for proving me right. And don't even whine about me being "mean" and "un Christian." I told you I wasn't THAT religious. It's about fairness, and you and everybody in the comments stopped playing nice a looooong time ago.

Now imagine someone having the same sensations, but being convinced it's a paranormal contact for believing John 3:16.
We evolved to seek pleasure (eating/reproduction), and avoid getting killed (tiger in the grass/competing neighbor/harsh enviroment). With our increased cognitive abilities we made up other reasons for pleasure, and survival beyond basic necessity. The Dopamine Reward System over time bridges gaps in pathways in order to form habits in order to repeat behaviors, and or thoughts. The often cited testimony of getting off an addiction thanks to a God is just a placebo replacement due to the power of the mind (an AA participant I heard of chose to worship the radiator in his room instead of an higher power, and became sober).

There are plenty of ways of interpreting this scene and the priest's wider role, but at the time and to some degree still I just figure he was a deluded twat who seized an opportunity for what he thought was peace and was willing to sell out his people for its sake, when what was actually called for was war to the utmost for humanity's survival. Especially as humanity was working on a bioweapon that might kill all the Visitors with a bit of luck. A hi risk strategy but his alternative was stupid and doomed to fail.

He was mostly a good character in the series and a dependable crutch for team resistance...But like a lot of the earlier Christian missionaries he fell to the same ego trap they often did when they tried to 'spread the faith' to others (and often ended up getting killed in equally gruesome ways by local tribes.)
A sad end, as he really wasn't a bad character by any stretch.

Yeah....pretty racist take. In truth it was the missionaries' people who killed millions of the "local tribes" in gruesome ways.

Actually, most catholics hear a part of the bible at least twice during office and repeat at least a quote. We aren't evil fundamentalists who don't read the Bible, even though some of us (at least, I) love the character of V's Diana.

Even as a 9-y.o. in a largely secular East Coast household, I knew more of the Bible than any of my neighbors who'd been raised Catholic and attended parochial schools their whole lives. Catholicism in Europe was traditionally for the (Latin) illiterate, so reading the Bible was never emphasized. And, priests/the heirarchy were threatened by people who thought for themselves as to religious interpretation and who read the Bible for insights that might challenge Catholic orthodoxy.

I am not sure if I understood this scene. Does Diana fear the priest might actually destroy the whole warmongering culture of the visitors on their home planet, if he ever got to preach the "salvation" of the Bible to the visitors?
Or does she realize her own ruthlessness is actually born from something that she lacks in life?
Either way I don't understand how she can see ancient superstition as a threat.

Diana didn't fear the priest. He's irrelevant. It was the idea that she could be vulnerable that she hated. The Bible in this scene and the time she spent with the priest were catalysts for that realization. Considering the goals of her species, she didn't want to be exploited through any weakness.
